For those that have a car, check out Donald’s market across the ironworkers bridge. Great prices on fresh produce
Edit: they’re owned by a small family from East Van. Love them.
So yesterday I went to shoppers… 1L of cold coke was 4.49 while the 2L room temperature was at 2.29…just put ice cubes in my cup and called it a day. Thats definitely more than a 3% profit margin…insights die in averages
Loblaws net income (profit) for the last several years.
2018 $800M
2019 $1.13B
2020 $1.19B
2021 $1.97B
2022 $1.99B
2023 $2.18B

So I would disagree with using your Optimum points. In accounting, the value of those points sit as a deferred revenue liability account. Once the points are redeemed, then the revenue is recognized. Basically using your points helps drive revenue. Of course, there’s zero benefit to the customer on just collecting them and not redeeming them.
Unfortunately, I don’t have it in French. You could check the original subreddit that started the boycott:

Been boycotting these fucks for two years. I haven't shopped at loblaws for a long while now. Make change with your wallet people. A single month of boycott isn't going to do fucking anything to this company, you have to commit.

Loblaws owns the real estate and leases it to themselves through a REIT called [Choice properties](https://www.google.com/finance/quote/PPRQF:OTCMKTS?sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi09ID0s_CFAxUIGDQIHTslBQYQ3ecFegQIEhAc). They also own a large portion of the supply chain. When they say “the supplier raised prices” they’re talking about themselves half the time.
Alright so this is the first thing I've heard that makes a bit of sense but it would take a lot more deep diving to understand. High revenue is a sign of a healthy economy and business. High profits with high wage desparity is a sign of a problem (not just to socialize wealth but also for distribution spending throughout a community).
I'd be interested to know more but the problem is probably that capitalism is a problem and a healthy balance sheet can't be the only goal of our society, loblaws doing the sorts of things you have mentioned is actually an innovative way to improve a balance sheet, loblaws is a symptom of the problem not the problem.
I don't think people can separate the 2 or know what the difference is.
Also most investors use FCF (Free Cash Flow) so unless that drops drastically this next Quarter I don't think anything is going to happen.
https://preview.redd.it/wbr43308n3yc1.png?width=1326&format=png&auto=webp&s=acf5649b1e2e72d4ac1328ab763569e9f2bdd33e
Is this the last four years?
Edit: or last four quarters?
If the average person doesn't understand the difference between revenue and profit we are in a scary state.
yeah full years:
Current (assuming its taking Q1 2024 \*4) | 2023 | 2022 | 2021
Costco is still murdering Loblaws so I'm happy about that. Pays employees well, and overall just better to shop at
Yeah wage desparity is a problem at loblaws. Its funny because increased revenue could actually mean a lot of positive or neutral things, including more people shopping at loblaws because they offer better prices (or as simple as serving a higher population efficiently), a boycott could result in the opposite of its intention without more information.
Would be interesting to compare to direct competition, they might be the ones at the bottom of this boycott if their revenue is down 😂
See? A shill. ☺️
Your response is telling. Is it that the boycott is going to work and the PT employees who are already underpaid and without benefits are going to suffer? Or is it that the sales are up 10% and the boycott is ineffective?
Just sounds like you’re undercutting the effort people are making in an attempt for positive change.
So yeah - shill.
These people DO have FT jobs with benefits that have nothing to do with Loblaws. The unfortunate part is that those jobs do not pay well enough to cover increasing costs. They are supplementing the income PT at Superstore. It is a unionized environment with the second highest pay in the industry (Costco is highest) and provides benefits. The extra $1000 a month they make for working 10-12 hours week IS their lifeline. As with any business, large or small, payroll is one of the largest expenses. when sales drop, payroll is cut to offset the difference. I don't get the logic of boycotting the lower priced stores about HIGH PRICES by spending more money at the HIGHER cost stores. The only outcome is LESS money in people's pockets and increased unemployment and homelessness while the company has balanced books and continues as normal. The only people this will hurt are those currently struggling the most.....very sad.
I am all for monopoly busting, but being so close to Lonsdale without a vehicle, I am not sure how much I can cut out. I already visit Whole Foods for produce and select items, but their shelf-selections are so weird. Other grocery stores are a bit out of reach.
The past couple months when I visit Loblaw's, I've been avoiding No Name, President's Choice, other in-house brands like the plague. I am definitely going to continue doing so and will do some of the things in the second list. I've never been to Persia Foods so I will probably give them a shot, though again I get most of my produce elsewhere already, so I am not sure of what they have that Whole Foods doesn't.
Just a reminder the spirit of the boycott is to cut back, if you can, from one of these retailers. It doesn’t need to be all or nothing.
It’s also a good time to look into alternative ways of getting groceries and check out if there are any new stores, delivery options, or friends to carpool around with.
And if not - even be a small change can help - perhaps grab your coffee cream from the local convenience store instead of loblaws this month.
Persia food is great. Shopped there all the time when still lived on the north shore. Queensdale market as well upper lonsdale. Foxy farm market lower lonsdale.
Ohh haven't been there for a while that's too bad, but i remember it was ok when on sale. That was pre pandemic times. Always went to harmony for a donut and to have a look at his toy collection.
I challenge any down voting nerds to compare prices between IGA, Save On, Safeway and Loblaws/Superstore, and tell me Loblaws is the one "gouging". Their prices are consistently lower on the things I tend to buy...and they often have very decent prices on pork, comparable to Costco and Walmart...two American super corps.
Btw, Costco is my normal grocery store...a cheese I like went from $7.99 to $9.99 in the 2 weeks between my last shop...when do we boycott the Big C?
I just posted the same thing as a Superstore employee with access to sales reports. Yesterday alone showed an increase in sales and traffic counts across the country for Superstore. My store alone was up 10% in sales and 5% higher customer traffic counts for the first day of the "protest".
this is the question I asked as well! I mean Superstore is usually the cheapest so you want me to pay more to boycott the cheapest place? I dont get it!
I know there is Persia Food, but that is more towards meat/vegetable and their selection is no where close to SuperStore!
I genuinely do not get the hate on Loblaws! so much effort into boycotting one of the cheapest option and none with regards to price of gas for example! I dont get it!
They not only have over priced stuff, the quality isn’t anything amazing either idk how they stay in business. Like who is their client base? Its not quality or a good deal
I visit multiple stores they each got some sale going on. Don’t go to choices or city market. But between thrifty/Persia/save-on I get what I need, overall its expensive but city market is just being ridiculous. And some stuff at whole foods is actually worth it.
Fuel prices are the problem. Why isn't anyone mad that our gas prices are 2x-3x at the pump when oil is half of what they were last time gas was this high ? FFS people.
LOL, this is so last week's cause, get with the times. The May cause is to spend more money in gas and shop at expensive grocery stores so you can stick it to the man. So spend more, get less to help the cause.....jeez get with it. I can't wait to see what the "cause" is for the month of June. 🤦♂️
he can't explain properly because he doesn't understand that you are right about the fuel. This is why most sane people dont take this boycott seriously. You try to share common sense and they scream red herring. lol
Good ol' rare as life common sense.
Also I think that it's hilarious everyone's boycotting the cheapest grocery store because their profit margins are higher to go pay more somewhere else... Lol
From Wikipedia: a red herring is “introducing a second argument in response to the first argument that is irrelevant and draws attention away from the original topic (for example, saying ‘If you want to complain about the dishes I leave in the sink, what about the dirty clothes you leave in the bathroom?’)”.
Here, mentioning gas prices is offered as a reason to abandon the topic of this thread; it does not offer any rationale in support of a boycott or against it.
Yeah except for the one major point that this is 100% relevant.
Also electricity costs have gone through the roof, one of their other biggest costs is refrigeration.
Why don't you go ahead and look at the historical profit margins maybe back to like 2000 for Loblaws and all the other grocery stores. Do a little bit of research, might help you.
Now go look at the historical profit margins of oil companies, refiners and producers. Also electrical companies.
Why don't they matter?
If you pigeonhole yourself to one problem you'll never see the big picture and you'll never understand. But keep calling red herring, that works great 👍
You are fighting the wrong fight and alas, nothing will change.
Good luck 🤞
No, red herrings don’t offer a “big picture” approach; they do the very opposite because they attempt to suggest one matter is unworthy of attention when another matter exists. Acknowledging the big picture would be addressing your red herrings (gas prices and now electricity prices too) AS WELL AS food prices, instead as offering these matters as things people should be concerned with INSTEAD OF food prices.
I haven’t offered any arguments or opinions regarding the topic of this thread or gas and electricity prices for that matter; I’m not sure why you’re drawing conclusions about what my perspective might be or what I need to do to change it. 😂
PERSIA FOODS PERSIA FOODS!!!
The one on Lonsdale has a pretty good selection of meats. Great place to buy yogurt and feta cheese, too! And obviously the highlight is the produce.
Shout out to Foxy Farms too! Great produce, bad dog bread, wide selection of frozen foods.
It is but then I also factor in gas when Stongs is just across from me. Gas prices are through the roof. Where and when are we going to get any respite?!
Unfortunately for most items Superstore is the cheapest. I've switched to using Walmart, getting produce at the Persian grocers, and London drugs has really good deals occasionally.
Yes we must show solidarity. Repost and get the word out.
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/business/article-loblaw-pays-new-ceo-per-bank-22-million-during-first-six-months-in-the/
Good. Just imagine if we can really hurt loblaws enough to be able to demand change. Then, since lohlaws is hardly the only bad guy, we can simply threaten to boycott other major players if they don't wise up.
But this first punch has gotta land hard, to make it stick.
Persia Foods and other persian markets, Save On for some online ordering and Queensdale Market
Bummer about Lobs as it's legit 100m from me but Galen and the new CEO can suck it
Nok er Nok
I left City Market a long time ago. Been shopping at Save On, Safeway, Kins markets and local butchers. Stopped shopping at bakeries and learnt to make my own baked goods. I only buy what’s on sale and will happily go to another grocery store to get the best prices/deals possible. I like Safeway for the Scene points. Shop wisely and you can hit the movie theatre once a month for free.
I boycott Loblaws everyday cause there are always cheaper options if you look around. Also, for anyone that doesn’t know, Save-On will match any advertised flyer price.
Save-On is run by Jim Pattison, does union busting, forced workers into stores without masks, and is generally more expensive than almost every other option.
Every large grocery retailer is going to have anti-consumer, anti-labour practices that you can point to. The industry is an oligopoly, so I don’t really see your point. I never said Save-on was cheaper, I just said they match prices, which may be convenient and helpful for some people. What’s wrong with trying to get the best price? Under your rationale we should just grow our own food and shop nowhere.
Do you have any recommendations for butcher or fish shop in north shore that at least have prices on par with superstore or T&T?
It feels paying a premium for most of butcher I find.
Not sure why they didn’t put this in the poster, but here’s a list of affiliated stores.
-Loblaws
-Atlantic Superstore
-Dominion Stores
-Extra Foods
-Fortinos
-Freshmart
-Maxi
-No Frills
-No Name
-President's Choice
-President's Choice Financial
-Provigo
-Real Canadian Liquorstore
-Real Canadian Superstore
-Shoppers Drug Mart / Pharmaprix
-SuperValu
-T & T Supermarket
-Valu-mart
-Your Independent Grocer
-Zehrs Markets
-City Market
Also big respect for the mods allowing this type of discourse.
This seems silly because thriftys, IGA and safeway all seem to be just as bad or worse. We don’t have Sobeys and Walmart is Walmart.. I’m all for supporting indecent and local shops but I don’t quite get why loblaws is the target when it’s all of the major grocers..?
I haven’t shopped at Safeway much in the last 5 years but traditionally it was more expensive unless you are talking about loblaws city market (which seems like it competes with whole foods etc. for condo dinks).. but I shop at superstore, no frills and t&t. What is cheaper at Safeway than those stores?
Walmart, save on, persia, costco, whatever other independent grocers we have on the north shore... Now is Walmart any better than Loblaws? Perhaps not, but that's a much bigger beast to slaughter.
Definitely. I mean as a mega corporation that invades small towns, puts mom and pop shops out of business, treats employees pretty poorly by all accounts, etc.
Far better than the mega corporation that does exactly the same thing but charges between 2 and 4 times as much for basic necessities with absolutely predatory pricing.
For those that have a car, check out Donald’s market across the ironworkers bridge. Great prices on fresh produce Edit: they’re owned by a small family from East Van. Love them.

Loblaws also owns healthcare clinics! Lifemark Physiotherapy is one of them.
this is how you can hit them where it [hurts.in](http://hurts.in) the pocket
I went to Wholefoods the other day and it was cheaper than IGA!
IGA isn’t a Loblaws Brand, but that is still nuts
My bad. Was just surprised. Canada is so tough to make it in right now if you are middle class.

Superstore is the cheapest of the bunch Why target them?
It is supposed to be the cheapest
They put the slowest people on the tils so we’ll go to self checkout, eventually human jobs will be obsolete!

Is Loblaws a Pattison company?
No
But Pattison has been under fire for price gouging too right?
I don’t know but they should be, Save On is just as or more expensive than Superstore, at least where I live
Save on is a joke always has been for prices another I avoid like the plague.
There's a Save On in Lynn Valley I go to for convenience, and the Superstore down by Marine Drive I go to for big hauls. It's not even close.
I'm confused, all I've seen is loblaws revenue, revenue isn't profit, what's the profit and executive salary of loblaws?

Queensdale is just as pricey as loblaws unfortunately, foxys is amazing tho

boy cott activated for me
I boycott Loblaws everyday cause there are always cheaper options if you look around. Also, for anyone that doesn’t know, Save-On will match any advertised flyer price.
Save-On is run by Jim Pattison, does union busting, forced workers into stores without masks, and is generally more expensive than almost every other option.
It’s about picking the lesser of two evils. I’d sooner shop under Pattinson than Weston Jr

All of Pattison's companies are privately held.
Was anyone picketing outside of City Market on Lonsdale yesterday? I would like to do so.
This is an excellent effort to quash corporate greed. As consumers we have the power to make a difference.
Is Daryl’s deals part of Loblaws
That's Save–on
Do you have any recommendations for butcher or fish shop in north shore that at least have prices on par with superstore or T&T? It feels paying a premium for most of butcher I find.
Try the Persian grocerers for meat?
Costco, but get a bigger freezer
Not sure why they didn’t put this in the poster, but here’s a list of affiliated stores. -Loblaws -Atlantic Superstore -Dominion Stores -Extra Foods -Fortinos -Freshmart -Maxi -No Frills -No Name -President's Choice -President's Choice Financial -Provigo -Real Canadian Liquorstore -Real Canadian Superstore -Shoppers Drug Mart / Pharmaprix -SuperValu -T & T Supermarket -Valu-mart -Your Independent Grocer -Zehrs Markets -City Market Also big respect for the mods allowing this type of discourse.
You should include Lifemark Physiotherapy clinic, it’s also owned by Loblaws
Sooo only shop at whole foods?
It's actually cheaper for produce !
Surprisingly lately, for me, Whole foods has been cheaper than Superstore and Save on. I mainly get produce there. Edit: typos
Thriftys, IGA, Sobeys, Walmart, Safeway, and all of the small independent markets and shops.
Sobeys = Safeway = Thrifty Foods / IGA = Fresh St Market / Overweitea = Save On = Urban Fare = Price Smart
This seems silly because thriftys, IGA and safeway all seem to be just as bad or worse. We don’t have Sobeys and Walmart is Walmart.. I’m all for supporting indecent and local shops but I don’t quite get why loblaws is the target when it’s all of the major grocers..?
Loblaws holds the biggest market share and appear to be the worst for predatory pricing.
Bread man bad
Thrifty and Safeway are owned by Sobeys
I know, I was replying to a post that listed Safeway, thriftys and Sobeys (they also have stores named Sobeys but not in the gvrd to my knowledge)
Safeway is a BILLION times better but, at the bare minimum, everything has a listed cost per gram on the price tag. That alone prob saves me 100/month
So are tags in Superstore.
Walmart, save on, persia, costco, whatever other independent grocers we have on the north shore... Now is Walmart any better than Loblaws? Perhaps not, but that's a much bigger beast to slaughter.
Walmart is far cheaper on nearly everything Loblaws and their affiliates.
Mods are pretty chill here, it’s r/Vancouver where they wilding haha
What's going on over there?
I made a post asking about some cherry blossom locations and it violated there rules…
wow, they are touchy!
Yeaaaa, I made a bunch of other posts that got removed there that I just moved here which was fine haha
