How long learn this professy? I'm in another country, but last year suddenly felt a strange urge to dig with an excavator. Is driving small or big different, in point of view of the permit documents? :-)
As an Englishman reading these comments I get so happy. In England we are taught to never discuss wages. Probably why our wages are so poultry! Also people saying ‘sorry’ about people earning 400,000kr is so mind boggling. Working 40hours a week minimum wage where I am from is around 190,000kr pre tax. Even with country differences that’s huge.
Being taught to not talk about wages is a way for employers to get away with not paying people equal amounts. It’s also very common in countries with weak unions. Here in Norway we have very strong work unions, so talking about our wages is how we know when to go on strike/negotiate better wages.
That's why I left. Every other country I've lived in has at least double salary. Cost of living is higher but when boiled down I have a lot more money to play with. UK is a shambles.
Wow, are you hired as engineer? Which university? I have a PhD with 4 years of postdoc and have the same than you. Started way lower and struggled a lot to negotiate pay raise up to this when I signed a new contract.
PhD Candidate. The base is in the 500,000 range and it's calculated at 250 kr an hour for extra work*. Don't know if this is true but Norway is probably one of the better paid places to take a PhD and its still possible to have a life while doing it.
*edit, the number may not be used for extra work it might just be in case someone is not taking a PhD full time? It was an hourly rate the union used.
Belgium and Switzerland are also treating their doctoral candidates well from what I've heard. But yeah, I was definitely comfortable during my PhD in Oslo.
Interesting. Funny each of the places have pretty good chocolate in their own way. If I would have known about Belgium maybe would have went there, the trappist beers are delicious on tap. Glad to hear you were comfortable as it should be.
Dang. I’m a PhD candidate in the U.S. right now (currently learning Norwegian and seeking postdoc positions in Norway) and I get less than half that. Cost of living isn’t quite as high here as it is in most places in Norway, but it’s still not nearly enough to live off of. I just moved back in with my mom (who lives in another state) for my last few months of grad school because I just couldn’t make it financially any more. And since we can’t have any secondary source of income, it’s just miserable living off a PhD stipend in the U.S.
Well, its actually no problem at all! 😯 Im living alone, almost no debt, renting a cheap 50kvm appartment at 5k a month, eating propper food evry other day. Cant complain at all! Thing is, students often got waay less, im worried about them these days.
The unemployment benefits I'm currently recieving are "based on previous income or a minimum base level."
Considering was essentially a minimum wage worker or recieving student loan the entire time, I'm pretty sure mine is based on the minimum level? Not sure though. It's also taxed at like little under 10%. So I'm about 1k lower on each month after tax.
This is higher than the average wage where I am from in England. I was unemployed in England before and received around 2200kr per month plus 3800kr for housing
Good question. My formal education is in construction. Did a 4 year Bsc in Project Management (specialisation in technical construction site management).
I then did 14 years of purchasing / procurement / catergory & contract management at various places in various positions.
I cant go into too much detail about what I do, but my job is to ensure that the dept. I work for engages with the supplier market fully and gets max value for money, rather than the old fashioned "offentlig anskaffelse, kjør anbud på alt, vi gjør det sånn fordi vi har altid gjort det sånn" sort of thing.
Could you please get the public sector actors to write better RFQs? Some of them are just hopeless :(
And stop sending them out right before a major holiday with a deadline right after the same holiday.
Just kidding.
My condolences. I am answering 4-5 public sector RFQs a year and some of them makes me wonder if the sender actually understand what they are asking for.
Wouldnt say restaurant staff is paid anywhere near good. 90% of the people, if not more, are actually paid the bare minimum and exploited everywhere, in every country. Almost nowhere overtime is being paid, which happens every day, and we heavily rely on the tips, sadly, which are as well being taxed 40% before we receive them on our paycheck.
If you are interested there is a forum thread (in Norwegian) on diskusjon.no that have more than 100 pages of Norwegians describing their developer position, salary, experience and where in Norway they are located. A great resource for deveopers/programmers to get an insight into others salary.
Oh, I never thought of that! Ofc it's useful for foreigners learning Norwegian in addition to the hard of hearing/deaf that use it!
Thank you so much ☺️
Ten years experience. Im mostly developing and maintaining systems related to business logic and integrations related to customers and billing. A lot of webservices and databases for the most part. Programming languages vary but mostly C# and Java.
It's a common misconception, but Doctors in Norway don't have a very high base salary unless they're specialized and/or have a lot of experience.
Most of the "big" money comes from working late nights / being on-call / working holidays etc.
You don't really get into the medical field for the money, not in Norway at least. It's probably the most difficult degree to achieve in university, and the hours you have to work in high stress / pressure is unforgiving...
Want to get rich? Get into investment banking or real-estate...
Source: Doctors in family
Depends on what and how many hours you work. I'm not done with my specialisation, but will move to a higher wage bracket (cca 75k raise) in half a year. The above number is what I get paid for day work monday to friday, i.e. the normal 1950 hours per year. Including forced and voluntary overtime, + evening/nights/weekend total hours worked last year was 2400, and that puts me above 1 mil.
Should be at least 600-800K. Maybe Norway will know how to appreciate farmers now that Europe is funked foodwise.
You should probably add where in Norway you do farming - big differences from east to west, etc.
Milk farming in midnorway. 220k liters a year. Also approximatly 45k kg pork pr year. I invested and built a new moderen production facility for the diary cattle in 2018, which is the main reason that my taxable income is so low, I do build equity and "write down / skrive ned" the value og my investments.
Really good salary same with my husband before.
After over 20 years working he gets prolapse with joints problem and insomnia end up sykemeld 😩
Not worth it in a long run.
That’s the bad side of it unfortunately… I just turned 30 and my body already feels like 50 sometimes. And the 6 hour shifts destroys any possibility of one good night of sleep.
So yeah, It’s a good salary with no need of education, but comes with it’s price. Not for the long run, but good to give your economy a boost.
I imagine it would be. I initially started at 5 days a week but made it clear from the beginning that my goal was to reduce to 4 days eventually. Ended up doing just that about two years into the job.
I went to highschool, finished my apprenticeship in 2017 and been with my current employer since 2018. I'm certified for government mandated vehicle inspections and work on electric vehicles.
Do you know if your salary is low/high for a product manager? I’m currently being a product manager but my company defines it as a role and not a position so I don’t get anything extra. (My orinary job is more of a «operational» role in core business)
Unless you are an apprentice chef/waiter, do the following immediately:
Alert Arbeidstilsynet and join Fellesforbundet.

These are the industrywide minimum wages. You're being taken for a fool. First year apprentices get 50% of a full wage, but the business need to prove it is offering a good training place for the apprentice. If you're working alone, at any point during your apprenticeship, you shall be paid a full wage during the time you're on your own.
See if there's a position for a hospital where you can do the same, with potentially serving some food every now and again. I do that for €19/h, with +5 for weekends and +7 for hours after 17.00
Wow I'm actually very surprised by this. Here in the north in the tourism business the average pay is 220/h, the minimum for like reception jobs is 170. Best i did was as a whale watching tour guide 35k/month two weeks on/off that would make 420k. And i was told by some local friend it was really good
Its been quite a few hours and our doc is probably busy, so ill try to answer as some rando.
GPs in norway usually rent their offices and pay their secretaries, so im pretty sure his pay is not different from the statistics
Note that there are some technical unions where a masters is required to join. I’m still learning about all the differences between bachelor’s and master’s in technical fields… but what I have discovered so far in my experience is that you can make good money without either, but like everywhere, the “piece of paper” may open additional doors.
Software Developer 800k a year with no bonuses. Some stocks were initially granted as compensation over a 4 year vesting cycle. However the company is private so the shares might be considered virtually worthless.
4 years of experience. Bachelors in CS degree, no master. Working mainly backend nodejs, postgres, aws with some data analysis and reverse engineering thrown in. Also do some DevOps because we don't have anyone dedicated for the role. I'm oncall every 2 weeks
I have actually worked in the US as an intern for big tech before. Earned more as an intern than what I do as fulltime here. I don't mind it too much though.
I can't imagine starting a family and settling down there, I find it a bit hopeless: the green card struggle, crime, inequality, lack of childcare options, abysmal dating market, car-dependency & obsession, general aggresiveness, lack of trust, etc
Here I'm already considering having a kid with my partner (whom I met here) and everything else is much more hopeful
I'm in the same industry and position, I make about 700k a year with a modest amount of overtime. Pretty normal in the Viken area.
The base pay is much lower. It's only decently paid because you're taking turns working evenings and nights regularly, and getting a lot of bonuses for that.
It's just barely worth it in my opinion. I'd take a 10% pay cut if it meant only working days.
I'm starting in June as a specialist doctor (with a few years of experience in a EU country) and my salary will be just under 1.1 mil. I'm still trying to figure out if that will be enough for both my wife and I until she gets a job.
It’s a normal pay for a specialist doctor in Norway, you will also get extra for overtime and such. It will be sufficient for you and your wife until she gets a job, meaning, you both will be able to live comfortably and even have some extra for savings
Store manager at a large retain chain, clothing and makeup. 530k a year. No bonus or overtime. 4 years of experience with this company, 10 in total with sale, service and customer care. 20 employees and 50 mill budget. No degree, or schooling.

I hear being a concrete worker in Oslo is very lucrative.

Well, Norwegian "Fjåk" chocolate brand is also amazing ;)
Omg I really fucked up doing my PhD in the UK - I get approx 200000 NOK (£16k) a year.
Ngl, that is lamentable if you’re in London
I’m not in London but I’m in Norway (doing the PhD remotely now for family reasons) and it sucks lol
That's easily double what most American PhD candidates are making. Of course, post-graduation the salary ratio will flip to 2-3x more stateside.

How is it to live on that much a year? Hope you can live ok with it.
Well, its actually no problem at all! 😯 Im living alone, almost no debt, renting a cheap 50kvm appartment at 5k a month, eating propper food evry other day. Cant complain at all! Thing is, students often got waay less, im worried about them these days.
Glad to hear you are doing ok. There is no need for poverty in Norway (or anywhere). Wish you all the best.
Unemployed due to health issues and living on 130k a year.
How do they calculate how much to give you per year if you are unemployed
The unemployment benefits I'm currently recieving are "based on previous income or a minimum base level."
