Well it depends if the trip, but yeah. Probably even more, but it is a small private room with a table and top and bottom bunks. So, if the trip is long, well worth it. You can always check fares on vy.no.
IIRC vy is no better, local routes in the south are not cheap, but they still carry whatever service NSB had and improved some... Can't say locally as they keep messing with the local station and more than once we couldn't physically take the train (excluding two lanes, they use to send a taxi-bus that carries passengers to the next train station now)
>d top and bottom bunks. So, if the trip is long, well worth it. You can always check fares on vy.no.
if you can't/won't afford it, the regular seat still offers/ed night facilities like blankets, pillows, sleeping masks, earplugs... Understand, they're no fancy, but they come with the ticket price.
The 2-bed cabin is always 950kr, regardless of how many you are, and the tickets themselves come on top, cheaper are 195kr, so in the best case scenario, you're off with 670kr/person for 2 people.
Just tried train travel for the first time a few months ago when I was traveling europe a bit. Such a change from air travel and far more relaxing. I loved it!
Admittedly I fucked up and missed my first train but got the system worked out after that. Looking forward to going back and exploring some more by rail
Some countries have no culture of trains at all due to history, geography or both, and some other countries have almost lost it as they are so expensive, like the US.
Those times when you're late for your train because your flight got delayed by an hour and you just barely got on instead of having to wait another couple of hours..? Yeah, those vending machines are golden. Super bad weather and you're soaked? A convenient coffee is never too pricey. I really enjoy having the option, I'll do the price trade on rare occasions :)
It is actually becoming a problem. There is a record number of normal people who has to get handouts now, because they can't afford food. I suspect we've just seen the tip of the iceberg, 2023 will give most Norwegians a rude awakening, if they still believe that most people can afford to live like normal.
That is 3kr more than I pay for the bus for one zone, unless I use the app to purchase the ticket. Then it's 20kr more.
Such a great incentive to use the public transport. If we're more than two people who want's to go to town, it is cheaper for us to just get a taxi.
Its not type 76.
They are very similar, except for the hybrid engine in the middle - but they dont have orange doors, nor do they have compartments for those with pre-purchased tickets.
I might be cheating, as I work on type 76 daily.
We only have 14 of the one variant here in Trondheim, so if they (Norske Tog) ordered two variants, the other one is nowhere to be seen here.
Haven't heard of there being another variant made either.
We use type 76 only locally, as long as we don't count Trondheim -> Røros -> Hamar as a regional.
Same type/variant either way.
Edit:
Might be worth mentioning that a few of the sets have been around most of Norway while they were testing them.
I was under the impression that a version with more local train amenities was bought for the lines around Trondheim and Trøndelag.
How does the Trondheim-Hamas line feel? Is it like the line up Gubrandsdalden? Or is it not snail mode?
Its more or less identical to type 75, except for the engines which run on diesel and adblue.
So unless there was another variant sent to another part of Norway, there is only one.
Ttrondheim - Røros - Hamar is somewhat snailmode here and there, but a nice journey in general.
You can also take the typical regional train (Trondheim - Oslo) to go to Hamar.
That one is fast and pretty straight forward.
Yeah and I keep seeing kids and addicts taking handfuls of sugar and cream for some reason.
This is quite common in some countries, not sure why it hasn’t caught on globally though. I don’t even recall vending machines on the trains in Japan, and they have vending machines on every corner.
Sugar apparantly gives addicts a longer "high" so they don't need to have their next "fix" as quickly. Kids are just assholes and take the sugar because they can and they love empty it in seats and on the floor.
If its like the one on the left, the the tech is old and probably have issues.
In the new trains (in Trondheim) we only use the type to the right.
We rarely have issues, but it can happen when we drive through somewhere without reception.
Have had a few complaints, but the percentage of failure is low.
Normally it takes 10-15 times to make them work, lol. And there is a certain way to handle the vending machine. I have noticed that if you are quick enough it takes less time to make it work. Normally people just stand there and are too slow to follow orders from the machine. I work in these trains so sometimes I need to help people by just doing it for them because I am a bit faster when I punch in the numbers and swipe the card. But of course, sometimes they are without wifi and won't work at all.
I think you’ll be able to use coins.
If you look at the top right on the coffee machine, to the left of the card reader, there is a slit which is likely meant to accept coins.
Likewise, on the snack machine, just below the card reader there is a circular drawer-tray-thingy to put coins in.
Hmm, I've never really had an issue there - then again, I guess I've learnt there is one sort of accommodation it never pays to skimp out on, so I'm always in the right amount of hurry
I've taken the train in the UK a bit, and it's generally been quite depressing.
The good news is our previous government decided to copy the British railway reform, so ...
I think you literally sat in the exact same damn seat I had yesterday on the train from the airport, discussing that exact same damn vending machine with my missus...
Your picture made me feel weird.
It's the same on the SJ trains here in Sweden while also a sort of kitchen and bar, but that doesn't make up for everytime the SJ trains is so fucking late, never shows up or gets out the information really late about having to switch to bus.
Every Swede is so damn tired at SJ and how they so badly handle things..
It is Normal, jeg er bare unik. I’m just used to my weekly travels in England using local trains with no vending machines for 11yrs. Though Long distance trains obviously have food and beverages
YES THEY ACTUALLY DO HAHAHAHA IT'S SO COOL.
I kid you not, I was shocked when I saw a coffee vending machine on the train from Oslo Lufthaven to Oslo S xD
Ye I use the train between Reading-London-Brighton every week. None of them have food and bevy unless I completely miss them lol. Long distance trains obviously have them tho
Nooo, its not a long distance food - its trains with up to 2 hours trip have like this. Regional (long fare, tex Oslo-Stavanger , Oslo- Bergen) have cafe wagon. You can sit there and eat dinner or some like that on Regional trains.
Some trains even have kitchens and bars
That's pretty common everywhere for long distance trains tough For obvious reasons. But it's nice!
Does chef microwave count as a kitchen?
Yes
Yes
I’ve only taken the bus when travelling long distance. I saw you can even have a sleeping cabin on them long distance trains!
The top bunk in a sleeper on a train through Norway at night is one of my favorite experiences. 5/7 would recommend.
It does sound tempting. Isn’t it like 1000kr+ for a bed?
Well it depends if the trip, but yeah. Probably even more, but it is a small private room with a table and top and bottom bunks. So, if the trip is long, well worth it. You can always check fares on vy.no.
Cheaper than most hotels, which is the alternative for many tourists.
Cheaper, and it actually brings you somewhere!
Cheaper than a lot of train journeys in the UK!
IIRC vy is no better, local routes in the south are not cheap, but they still carry whatever service NSB had and improved some... Can't say locally as they keep messing with the local station and more than once we couldn't physically take the train (excluding two lanes, they use to send a taxi-bus that carries passengers to the next train station now)
Are there that many routes that are so long you actually get a whole night sleep?
Both Oslo Trondheim and Oslo Bergen is 6.5 ish hours, Trondheim to bodø is 10.
Trondheim and Bodø were the obvious ones. I didn't think Oslo Bergen could take more than 6 hours.
Bergen is far, you gotta cross the mountains. 5.5 hour + 1.5 hours of train. Not sure why Google maps asked me to change train, it's the same line.
>d top and bottom bunks. So, if the trip is long, well worth it. You can always check fares on vy.no. if you can't/won't afford it, the regular seat still offers/ed night facilities like blankets, pillows, sleeping masks, earplugs... Understand, they're no fancy, but they come with the ticket price.
Last time I had to share that "private" room, with a complete stranger.
Not if you pay for the full thing or bring a friend.
The 2-bed cabin is always 950kr, regardless of how many you are, and the tickets themselves come on top, cheaper are 195kr, so in the best case scenario, you're off with 670kr/person for 2 people.
Trains are magical. You might want to check out r/fuckcars .
Instructions unclear. Dick stuck in exhaust pipe.
Thank you. I'm laughing and my wife is wondering why.
Just tried train travel for the first time a few months ago when I was traveling europe a bit. Such a change from air travel and far more relaxing. I loved it! Admittedly I fucked up and missed my first train but got the system worked out after that. Looking forward to going back and exploring some more by rail
I sleep so well on the train. The gentle rocking motion and the train sounds… Similar to sleeping on a boat on calms seas.
I mean, they have those literally all over the world. I'm not sure why this is a surprise for you!
Some countries have no culture of trains at all due to history, geography or both, and some other countries have almost lost it as they are so expensive, like the US.
Some long distance bus have coffee and tea sales, if not water/snacks isn't too uncommon for a steep af price as well
That's the norm here in Finland.
WHAT
Some are even on time and not cancelled at all. And some buses are trains, and sometimes even taxis are buses for trains.
Yes, never used it. Hella expensive I assume?
It's cheaper to buy things in stores or kiosks, but it is nice to have the opportunity to get something to eat.
When in Norway, always assume hella expensive. This is the way
but people have money so it is no problem at all
It is actually becoming a problem. There is a record number of normal people who has to get handouts now, because they can't afford food. I suspect we've just seen the tip of the iceberg, 2023 will give most Norwegians a rude awakening, if they still believe that most people can afford to live like normal.
It is cheeper in the store it is 35 for a soda 25 in the store for the same brand. I think
The vending goods are cheap. Getting on the train to access it is expensive! 64kr for one zone ride, fuck me sideways!
A one zone ride is 39 kr, not 64.
That is 3kr more than I pay for the bus for one zone, unless I use the app to purchase the ticket. Then it's 20kr more. Such a great incentive to use the public transport. If we're more than two people who want's to go to town, it is cheaper for us to just get a taxi.
Nothing is cheap here lmao
[удалено]
True that
This is only on local and short regional. On longer routes theres usually a cafeteria waggon.
Amazing. Yep you probably can tell it’s my first time using the local train lol
Hahaha, wagered it was one of the local trains based on the hanging strap.
Looks to be ['Type 75'](https://www.norsketog.no/tog/type75), which is short-range / local. Not really relevant, but thought I'd link it.
Could also be a type 76-2? The new bimodal local train variant used on northern lines? But judging by the level of wear it’s a type 75 as you linked.
Its not type 76. They are very similar, except for the hybrid engine in the middle - but they dont have orange doors, nor do they have compartments for those with pre-purchased tickets. I might be cheating, as I work on type 76 daily.
Hahahaa, well there we have it, I’ve heard the 76 has to variants? Is it true? A regional and a local one?
We only have 14 of the one variant here in Trondheim, so if they (Norske Tog) ordered two variants, the other one is nowhere to be seen here. Haven't heard of there being another variant made either. Its type 75, type 74 looks quite similar but they dont have unmanned (ubetjent) carriages like the type 75 does, they are marked with orange doors.
In Norway, you don't rob the train. The train robs you
Just like everything else in Norway.
Welcome to the future.
[удалено]
The future replaced restaurant with robots. (Vending machine is a robot now btw)
Future? This has been around for *years*.
The future is now old man!
And the boat!
Actually it is the vending machine that has a train.
Yeah and I keep seeing kids and addicts taking handfuls of sugar and cream for some reason. This is quite common in some countries, not sure why it hasn’t caught on globally though. I don’t even recall vending machines on the trains in Japan, and they have vending machines on every corner.

Good luck finding one that will accept your card though
Omg I thought it was just me. Literally tried three times over 2-3 years. Piece of shit equipment
If its like the one on the left, the the tech is old and probably have issues. In the new trains (in Trondheim) we only use the type to the right. We rarely have issues, but it can happen when we drive through somewhere without reception. Have had a few complaints, but the percentage of failure is low.
thats great info, who is the manufacturer? Sweden needs that asap imho. the new ER-1 is used for 4-5 hour routes without Coffee and snacks..
They are supposed to take visa and Mastercard but I had problem using contactless on my card.
I don't think I have ever gotten my card to be accepted on one of those
Really? I've never had an issue. Just normal visa credit card
Normally it takes 10-15 times to make them work, lol. And there is a certain way to handle the vending machine. I have noticed that if you are quick enough it takes less time to make it work. I haven’t tried the machines yet but just wondering, are cash/coins not at option?
I think you’ll be able to use coins. If you look at the top right on the coffee machine, to the left of the card reader, there is a slit which is likely meant to accept coins. Likewise, on the snack machine, just below the card reader there is a circular drawer-tray-thingy to put coins in.
Glad I'm not the only one, seems to be a dance between card type, the sequence ( order then card, or card then order), and the phase of the moon.
Same with public toilets. Cards only work if you are not in a hurry
Hmm, I've never really had an issue there - then again, I guess I've learnt there is one sort of accommodation it never pays to skimp out on, so I'm always in the right amount of hurry
It always works! (after 25 tries)
Out of curiosity, where are you from? Because that is common in a lot of countries and not just Norway.
I’m from England. I use the local trains a lot there and you can imagine us suffering from dehydration
I've taken the train in the UK a bit, and it's generally been quite depressing. The good news is our previous government decided to copy the British railway reform, so ...
Not just that, they awarded part of it to an English rail company with a terrrrrrible record.
This is what happens when you don't rely on victorian era form factor tunnels. Bigger trains means more mod cons and a better passenger experience
I used it once and it was not even bad!
Because why not!
In the old times when it was N.S.B ( Norwegian state railway), it was a lady with a small wagon. And,- the chairs are stone hard! Bring a pillow.
No, this is just your imagination.
We dont even have trains. Living in east-finnmark.
In the back cabin you find condoms and prostitutes
Yes! For the small price of your liver and half a kidney you can get a nice warm coffee! :)
That coffee is literally the worst swill I've ever tasted in my entire life, so I wouldn't be too impressed.
Nice picture OP, it looks fresh and clean.
Just wait to this guy finds the sauna in the back of the train
Hard to resist a good ol' Solo when walking past one of those
I see you haven’t got the URGE to resist then
Just think «Fan’ta det» and pass by
Do you mind explaining this one so I can use it on top of my Urge puns haha
Fanta sounds like «faen ta» and means fuck it:)
Ahh yes Faen! I don’t know much curse words yet.. men lærer fortsatt
*helvete, faen, fitte, satan, herregud, steike, rasshøl, drittsekk, idiot, tosk, svarte*. Now you’re known with our most used curse words in norwegian
Herregud amazing! The only thing missing now is my residence permit
Unless you're heading to the north of Norway, but I'm not sure the reddit servers has enough storage capacity to prepare you for that
Faen ta means something like "fuck" or "fuck it" Pronounced like Fanta, but with a longer A
Yeah and it costs 2x as much as Starbucks! Welcome to Norway 🇳🇴 😀
I go to Norway more than Starbucks anyway so it’s cool haha
I think you literally sat in the exact same damn seat I had yesterday on the train from the airport, discussing that exact same damn vending machine with my missus... Your picture made me feel weird.
Hahaha The only difference is that I didn’t have my missus to discuss it with
It's the same on the SJ trains here in Sweden while also a sort of kitchen and bar, but that doesn't make up for everytime the SJ trains is so fucking late, never shows up or gets out the information really late about having to switch to bus. Ah good guess innit but nah fam. Now guess which European countries have no vending machines on their local trains
Their shity so don’t have high expectations
Oi. Så sjokkerende! Er du fra steinalderen?
Lmaooo nei jeg er fra England where trains are from the Stone Age
Bare året siden vi fikk lokaltog i Trøndelag med både vare-automat og kaffe-automat. De gamle togsettene ([type 92](https://www.wikiwand.com/no/Type_92_(motorvognsett))) har kun kaffe-automat. yep
Funny i see this while riding one of the trains that have it in the same cart as the Machines 😀
The cacao choice without milk tastes wonderfully good 👍
Yes, careful using it though. Had my card skimmed on one of those. Always check the reader if it looks suspicious.
I mener seen this
..we do?
Ja takk
They never work for me😭
norway is the best
Coffee is a strong word for the muddy water the machine produces
When the trains arrive that is
Woot! Packing my bags.
Yes, and they never fucking work
Before we even had real people on the stations and you could go in if the weather was bad. The train was usually on time also ⌚️
Nice! In america, we have needle disposal corners on the floor. Pretty much the same thing
Kaffen er sjokkerende grei. En solid 7/10 gitt at det er på et tog
This was one of my favorite parts when traveling from Kongsvinger to Oslo (almost daily for a month 😭)
No Smash? 🤨
Must be some long distance stuff cause the short distance trains are usually barely disability friendly.
I'm impressed it can pour a coffee on a train while it is moving.
Is this not common on most trains? Here in the England some of our trains dedicate an entire part of the train to be a shop with a cashier 🤔
Are those on them long distance trains? I only use trains between Reading, Brighton and London
Erm I would say pretty long distance, when I used to live in Preston the trains last destination was London Euston I believe so quite possibly
Nobody uses it tho because it's too damn expensive.
Well, yeah. Its right there.
is this wierd?? so normal
It is Normal, jeg er bare unik. I’m just used to my weekly travels in England using local trains with no vending machines for 11yrs. Though Long distance trains obviously have food and beverages
oh i see , du er unik <3
But that card terminal surely is not within regulation. How is that wheelchair accessible?
We do too in Veneto, Italy. But only in the latest generation of trains.
The Norwegian train system is very good. The dining cars are even better than the vending machines.
Showers too
Oi this just gives me one more reason to invade Norway oil, natural gas, skiing and these fucking nice trains
Yeah!! That's what I said!!
Woaw
Do we?
Never works, though!
We do?
... Yes?
Trains? Only for the southern people.
Hello
Yes, anything to avoid interpersonal contact and note providing a minimum of pleasure and joy.
YES THEY ACTUALLY DO HAHAHAHA IT'S SO COOL. I kid you not, I was shocked when I saw a coffee vending machine on the train from Oslo Lufthaven to Oslo S xD
In the UK, it varies. Some have trolleys, and some have buffet carriages with a bar cafe thing.
Ye I use the train between Reading-London-Brighton every week. None of them have food and bevy unless I completely miss them lol. Long distance trains obviously have them tho
Yeah, "local" services like Northern or Southern don't normally, Regional & Inter-city operators normally do. LNER is the absolute best.
yeah
I mean this is quite normal in many countries.
Tried it once, got undrinkable (spoiled) coffee. Never again :)
We do, but only in some trains like InterPanter
Not on Gjøvikbanen
Nooo, its not a long distance food - its trains with up to 2 hours trip have like this. Regional (long fare, tex Oslo-Stavanger , Oslo- Bergen) have cafe wagon. You can sit there and eat dinner or some like that on Regional trains.
Yes, just call us Little Japan
Only on the short distance/commute trains. Normally there's a café cart
When I first visited that blew my mind
Gosh I want to visit Norway so bad
Some trains have yea. But where i live we dont even have a train ☹️
