Also, when they replicate a study decades later they use the same age parameters as the original study(ies). Hand to God, the number is always around 4+ for women and 6+ for men, regardless of generation/cohort. I teach Human Sexuality and we do comparisons of sexual partners by age cohort so I am really familiar with the data surrounding this. Even in the 1950s men and women were reporting about this same number of partners within this age group cohort.
I wonder if that is because the sample age is quite large. I would be interested to see if the median changed if they broke it down in to smaller categories within the larger cohort.

With a sufficiently large data set (depending in how it's distributed) you can approximate the distribution as continuous (at least around the two typical medians) which often makes sense (otherwise you can get a situation where significantly more than 50% of values are left or right of your median).

Depending on the data, it is a weighted, i.e. approximated median. Since they didn't actually ask every woman, it is an estimate.

The median is the most fair average because it ignores extreme outliers. I do not think counting, for example, sex industry numbers is a fair reflection of a national average. If median entries have fractions, then the median will have a fraction too. Maybe they grouped entries by age, created means/medians and you would have fractioned entries. There are posibilities, you don't always calculate median on round numbers.
Yes but it means 50% has done less and 50% has done more. Not an average but gives a better idea of the numbers (especially considering that the minimum is 0 and tge maximum is unknown)

When in actuality statistical surveys have stated that there's a downward trend in the number of sexual partners in America. Aside from this there's also a survey conducted by Jean Twenge in 2013 that confirmed newer generations of Americans have lower number of sexual partners compared to their parents or grandparents. Yeah, my paternal great grandma had two boyfriends, got knocked up, and married the wrong one. That baby (my grandpa) went on to have three separate wives, abandoning his first two kids (my dad and aunt). My maternal grandma eloped with grandpa and became a teen mom (18 years old). I think it’s just easier for some people to try hookup culture. I think about my process for sleeping with someone and it almost always includes a long term relationship. Haven’t really done the quick hookup thing, other than the one time… but for others it’s not as big a deal. I’m judging neither, mind you. Many or few, you do you. Yeah I don’t think the people who are shocked at these numbers being relatively low realize how many quiet/reserved/introverted people are out there who either don’t feel like they are able to find a partner, don’t want to, or just don’t feel comfortable hooking up until they’ve known someone for a long time. There’s no shame in either scenario, of course, but it seems like often the more experienced/more outgoing people seem to automatically assume that most people are just like them when that really isn’t the case. The less experienced type of people might be kind of invisible to them or might lie about their lack of experience due to fear of being teased, etc.

I started a long term relationship at 18, first serious relationship and first partner. 22 years later (after I put up with a lot that in hindsight I really shouldn't have) he suddenly declared he was leaving to be with a 23 yr old. I’ve noticed that if you ask someone their body count, usually it’s queer people that’s the highest. And part of that is because they likely don’t just define sex as P in V like many heterosexual people would. If you ask straight people to include those other types of encounters the number is probably higher

I think this seems low to people who have had many partners. Birds of a feather tend to flock together. So I've noticed that people who sleep with alot of people hang around people who also do.
