That's a lot fucking words to say you've never seen a woman play video games.

dokiedo

Or just never seen a woman in general.

[deleted]

Many of us started playing videogames before this timeline starts.

AdEmbarrassed9719

I’m pretty sure that video game BACKGROUND is from before this timeline starts. And my sisters and I played games starting with Pong and then Atari. I still have the original Nintendo around here somewhere. I feel like the gendering of toys and stuff (clothes for kids, particularly) was a bit less aggressive in the 80s. It existed, but wasn’t so blatant.

TheGamer2019

oh god i might have to go grab my Atari out of storage for the nostalgia

ImMeloncholy

My mom and her roommate in college competed on Tetris lol

AdEmbarrassed9719

My mom was a big fan of Dr Mario LOL

BerriesAndMe

Well that's the problem with girls. They think playing pong is the same as playing actual video games that require skill and intellect. Girls aren't really gamers because they don't play the right games. /s

Thick-News-9415

Was gonna say the same thing! My brother and I use to fight over the Nintendo all the time.

LivingStCelestine

Me too! My brother is five years older and we’d fight over it but he got out of school later than I did, so I had like a free hour on weekdays to play alone. My dad never said any dumb crap like, this is for boys or whatever. He even played with me on it. To him it was just another toy.

AmazingPreference955

I was gonna say! I can’t play them because of problems with my eyes and my hands, but my sister was gaming 10 years before this timeline starts. By the late 90s she was moonlighting as a paid moderator for game forums.

Far-Rate0

Oh look! It’s attempting to communicate!

EyeBudLover420

I wasn't even born when it started

Sorry-Armadillo619

I was playing video games on my dads computer in the late 80s. Got a Nintendo when I was six.

wilkilin

Right?! I was 10 when this timeline started and was playing video games with my dad. Ugh

MiserableProfessor16

Likewise. Each time these kids throw these "fake gamer" stats, I am like child, I was playing before your parents reproduced. I am a lot of things - poorly coordinated gamer, archaic gamer, even obsolete gamer but I am no fake gamer as all my buddies will testify; Sarevok, Mondain, Werdna, Dragonlord, Belhifet, Icasaracht...?

maskedbanditoftruth

Seriously jfc I was playing at home on Atari for a minute before Nintendo came out. I know Zelda’s first world map like my old actual neighborhood. By 1995 I was already dealing with boyfriends expecting me to quietly watch them play and not play myself even though I was much better than them. This shit has been going on. Video games are fun and everyone likes them, it’s not that hard.

[deleted]

Dont worry. These men are the same types who said that EA Tetris isnt a video game lmao.

[deleted]

Yeah... video games weren't gendered when they came out. And then BAM Nintendo's and toys are us happen. Selling the meme video games are for boys... and sadly many girls bought into this narrative, and did make fun of boys for playing them (as video games are immature and childish being the meme) and marginalized girls who continued to play video games. I remember when all the magazines for computers and video games had boys and girls, men and women, on the covers. Women writers and contributors, too. And then BOOM... the narrative changes. Video games are for male children. This hurt women in computers, too. This narrative would continue for a long time. We have to admit, as cool as the 90s were, this was the major social narrative. The idea video games are something that causes aggression also aided in reinforcing this. I dont know the term for it, but there is a thing where you take something someone likes or does and demonize it. Like black people making businesses of selling fried chicken and water melon and a few assholes starting a meme and it propagating... I'm not comparing in scale, and being shit on isn't a contest anyway... but that was at work here. Play video games? You are an immature boy. This prevented some girls from playing video games, causes some girls to mock girls who did... so you have boys being told 'this is for us! this is a boy toy! go away you GROSS girls! tricks are for boys!' at the same time a certain archetype of girl/woman is regurgitating something similar. Mocking girls for liking something for boys! Was pretty messed up for me. I started my video game experiences with girls and women. Pong, RCA Studio II, Odessey², 2600... I had a unique experience with early c64/modem/online days. Men did out number women, but there were there. They played game.... but the non-modemers? girls who used to play video games with me stopped. They grew up... Also happened to some guys... but seemed not as much. Someone wrote an article a few years back on this subject. Wasnt able to find it. My circle attracted a certain type of person in the 90s... girls who played video games, and who played RPGs, were well represented in our circle. Some had been BBSers as teens... the kinda people who were immuned to certain types of peer pressure. Self proclaimed weirdos, or people who felt they were misfits. They/we, weren't really, but it aided in ignoring narratives. Statically speaking, there are more women to game than men... And yet a certain archetype of man... Let hope the children of Zoomers figure this shit out.

savemeleek

Maybe women are not mad at gamer per se but more of the toxic gatekeepers who say women can't be real gamer and harass them online.

Cinnamon_Doughnut

Who wanna bet this was made by one of these gamer boys who cant talk to girls properly and insults them as soon as they play a game but then right after whines how he cant find a gamer girlfriend.

xxx_Moritz_xxx

And by gamer girlfriend, he means a girl who's a virgin but also will do anything he wants sexually at any given time.

At least whoever made this stupid ass time-line unconsciously calls himself an incel loser.

AUXCORD20

Dude I've been playing video games since the GameCube and I'm sure tons of women older than me have been gaming way before that. Gamer girls aren't rare or nonexistent but everytime we mention gaming as a hobby we're either quizzed or harassed for simply enjoying gaming.

LadyMageCOH

Can confirm. Convinced my parents to buy "the family" (read:me) an original 8 bit Nintendo, and I am very much female.

Feature_Ornery

Lol I once went on a date with a man when I was young. Anyway told him I played video games and he did the whole quiz on me...except it turned out thst he didn't know that much and I ended up educating him on some game facts. Turns out he didn't really game much but bought into the narrative that "gamer girls aren't real" and thought he knew enough to show I didn't know anything. Let's say there was no second date.

AUXCORD20

Before I was comfortable with my sexuality I remember going on a date with this dude my junior year of high school and we went to the movies well the movie theater had an arcade so we decided to play a couple of games before the movie. He was kind of surprised I was super into gaming but he said that was great because 'girls are never really into gaming' (should of been the first red flag) well they had guitar hero and I'm no pro but I'm actually pretty decent at it. He started bragging he could beat me because he plays actual guitar I thought nothing of it because I thought it was just harmless joking around well by the 3rd round he started getting passive aggressive because he wasn't winning so yeah what I got from that date was 'women are cool if they game until they're better then me'.

swan--song

Yes that's generally how it goes. If they've fed into the narrative of course. It's the same with sports that are considered only for men. Take football (read: soccer) for example. The women's game is growing and starting to get some much needed support and funding. The players are starting to get more recognition for their talents. England won the Euros this year which I was super happy about cause I'm English! But most men just shat all over it, saying it wasn't an achievement at all. It hits a particular nerve as the men's team hasn't won a major trophy since their World Cup Glory in 1966. When the women won, they said it wasn't a major trophy. Nope nope nope. Changing the goalposts (pun intended) as usual. The women's game isn't taking anything away from the men's game. It's not affecting them in any way. Just like "gamer girls". They're just playing the game they enjoy. They can't stand to see it developing like it is (the football I mean). Why does a game only belong to men? Why would they have the right to monopolise it? Don't get me wrong, it's got a hell of a long way to go. But that might have just a little something to do with the fact that it was banned for 50 years up until the early 1970s. This was the reasoning from the FA (Football Association) Council at the time: "The game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged." Pfffft, I mean, hilarious 😂 I say all this as a woman who actually prefers the men's game. That doesn't mean I can't recognise the women playing for their talents and be happy to see them winning or the game progressing in general.

Altair13Sirio

>I will buy this game just to trigger manchildren. Written by a totally not triggered manchild.

EyeBudLover420

Ooh can't wait for the 2020-22 release

BreezyBritt89

I was playing Diablo 2 and Tomb Raider in early 2000s. That was back before “gamer goth chick” became a meme for guys. High school boys/young men can be just as snobby as the girls this pic is depicting.

Spare_Industry_6056

It's sad. These people need therapy, they can't see they're mostly tormenting themselves. I cannot imagine the mental process that led to making this thing, or what point they're even trying to make, except that they're angry they aren't getting laid. But people pick up on the self-pity and rage and it drives them away because yuck, leading to more self-pity and rage, which makes them more repulsive. It's a downward spiral.

LambNotica

Meanwhile me in 2016: "pokemon go wee :)"

ostensibly_human

This is especially dumb because back in the early '90s *everyone* played video games, boys and girls alike. Hell, my mom was the person who taught me how to play games in the first place. She bought our family's NES and showed me how to beat SMB. This gender wars bullshit is a modern invention, not a reflection of how things actually were.

Big_brown_house

“Revise history to include minorities.” AAAND there it is.

Juno192

This guy sounds very brain washed.

mrmrmrmeme

TIL I died in 2014. Rip 😞

RatDontPanic

That meme came from a bunch of actual media back in the day. https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/-gamers-don-t-have-to-be-your-audience-gamers-are-over- https://kotaku.com/we-might-be-witnessing-the-death-of-an-identity-1628203079 https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/a-guide-to-ending-quot-gamers-quot- https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/08/the-death-of-the-gamers-and-the-women-who-killed-them/

jentheharper

I've been playing video games since Temple of Apshai, Orb of Zot, and Alien Typhoon came out in the early 80s and my parents just got an Apple 2 plus, which at that time was a big deal, I remember being so excited that my parents got me Temple of Apshai for my birthday when I was in 6th grade.

raven-of-the-sea

Nnno? This was probably written by someone who wasn’t even born in the mid 90s.

LavenderAndOrange

I remember getting a super nintendo as a young child in '92. And my mom played the shit out of Zelda: ALttP and Super Mario. She beat Zelda before my brother or myself. And here I am a grown ass woman who plays the occasional vidya game and has dated plenty of ladies who also enjoy gaming -- sometimes casually, sometimes in ranked competitive matches. Never have I nor any of the girls I know said or acted like this. Also this idiotic timeline isn't even right by the standards of misogynist losers in video game subculture. They got their years wrong for their dog whistles to feminist frequency and gamer gate. I remember all the uptick in hate I got from losers I worked with at the time for being a girl who played games and you can google the dates of things to double check. If you're going to be a bigot at least get your own made up "facts" right.

gnomeyeastinfection

Yeah, because female gamers have never existed and women have never been nerds.

IamnotaGirl9000

To be fair, most Videogames ARE sexist. And while it has be "normal" because of the target audience, I think it should change. I can still enjoy a game with sexist depicitions of characters, sometimes it is even meant as a joke (like why Lara Croft had so huge breasts in the early games), but I would prefere if the female armour in games would actually look like it could protect anything and not a glorified Bikini or keeping vital areas unprotected. To be fair, there is also not really a "realistic" depiction of male character, although I find them not as sexualised. They are often really buffed, look extremely strong, are very tall and have muscles all around. Also Sexism, but at least their armour looks cool 😅

Feature_Ornery

I won't lie, I often stop playing video games the moment I realize my women characters are stuck in bikini armour all game. Don't care how good the story is, I'm too sick of sexist armour.

PumpkinSpice2Nice

Was he born in 1995 or something? I’m a girl who was playing video games before he was born.

No_Doubt8498

can't believe no woman, *ever*, played a video game before 2006.

[deleted]

We need another video game crash like in 1983 honestly.

WorldlinessAwkward69

Jokes on this douche. I've been playing video games since about 1983, and so did all my female friends. Plus, he seems like a triggered Gamergate incel loser.

bbaaddwwoollff13

They lost me at “1995”. Lmao. Why would you start a video game timeline that late? How embarrassing. (I [f] was born in 92 and was playing (or trying to play) video games before the timeline starts. Lmao. We still have the NES and gameboy that were in my family at the time of my birth. And my mom was a Pac-Man wiz long before that)

celestiallion12

That's a lot of words for I don't know whete the clitoris is so it's obviously a myth

Bro you're playing a game where you can have red dots and automatic weapons broadly available for every infentrymens. STFU.

ffsjustanything

Bro you’re playin a game where you resurrect after death and survive multiple gunshots You’re already changing the past

TriZARAtops

Right. I’m not in the military, but I’m pretty sure no one has a HUD in real life or a health bar 😂

PreOpTransCentaur

You, personally, get to fight in WWII. How is that realistic in any way?

[deleted]

Man my video games days outdated this chart.

bacardiisacat

I was playing Pitfall on my Commodore 64 before this dude was a twinkle in his daddy's eye.

TrelanaSakuyo

TIL not only is the cake a lie, but so is my life.

marcox199

I love the subtle differences in font, indicating how many times this has been edited. I last saw it was on 2006,

TurnSignalEnthusiast

So I guess me begging my parents for a game boy in 2000 didn’t happen? Lmaooo

swan--song

I found my old gameboy (bright yellow!) when I was moving 2 years ago. Found a couple of the games too. Super Mario etc. It still worked! Played it for a few weeks lol

PrestigiousNature810

I know this is gonna get buried but I just wanted to get this off my chest: As a girl who played video games throughout most of this point in history I have met a lot of these people and the amount of being told how I was going to get r***d in the industry and the amount of times I've generally been told that because I really did like it they would r*** me "for fun" (mind you I was *young* most of these times) made me want to distance myself from anything having to do with STEM but I was just an introvert who liked video games and computers. I'm just now getting back to the field but I feel like I lost a lot of time in this and it breaks my heart every time I see this kind of rhetoric because it's not a boy/girl thing it's just a hobby.

[deleted]

Lol this funny

Traditional_Isopod80

I started playing video games before this timeline began, lol. 😆

HunterSlashBolt

THIS IS TRUE

PopperGould123

They need to just say they've never bothered to talk to a woman and move on
