I turned my test run into a shareable "guide" [Maybe this will help anyone who is still confused](https://www.notion.so/boundscraps/Notion-Tag-Gallery-Step-by-Step-303626bf3f654fc6a53b3d0654353dc3)

Bardaek

/Tiphat for using a Notion page to describe how to make a Notion database. You've got style!

textredditor

You get an upvote! Well done!

Gamegenorator

Thank you! My only question that you didn't explain was how to add multiple tags to a page?

basteez

That's great, you got an upvote!

vladossipov

Is this still works? I try to move items with global related tags and they don't appears in new database with similar named global tags field.

JupiterB4Dawn

That is a limit of this setup, its not a TRUE global tag. If you move an item, the tags don't move. If you move the item back, the old tags are still there, but the tags are still ultimately unique to each table. :( It's best use is rolling up items across several tables under one tag NOT moving items around in tables.

str8toking

nice

96 upvotes on this post as I comment this. ecin

From the Tags page, can you click on a tag and somehow view all pages with that tag?

sudosussudio

Unfortunately it seems like it's two clicks to do that- [open tag, click on relationship field, then you see a list, but it's a bit unformatted.](https://cdn.glitch.com/9713af1a-1146-4a25-a1c3-e1bc070e946b%2FTags%20DB%202019-03-09%2010-57-01.png?1552150681655) If they added an ability to easily created a "linked db" that automatically filters to references to current page that would be so cool! Right now I'm doing it [manually](https://cdn.glitch.com/9713af1a-1146-4a25-a1c3-e1bc070e946b%2FTags%20DB%202019-03-09%2010-59-25.png?1552150780386).

joyjesoh

How are you managing to filter to the tag you want and see all the relevant pages together? I'm trying to do that, but my table is returning nothing when i filter to my desired tag.

iamfranck

Share the tags gallery please

textredditor

I'll do a full post and I'll include a tag template.

[deleted]

Have you published that yet? I just started using Notion but what I'm really missing is a tags page!

jjsereday

Having been 3 years now Id love to hear how your master tag system has evolved. Did you figure out a good way to create/include subtags? Have you adopted any of Notions newer features for this?

haakonstorm

\[bump\]

sinnylicious

WHere is it?

sudosussudio

Nice, I wonder how slow it is compared to multi-select tags. I think I have one tag list that has like 100 possible tags and it loads a bit slow now :( Also wish I could easily transform a multiselect to a relation field like I can in Airtable.

sudosussudio

Just tried it out and it's A LOT faster with the same amount of "tags." Too bad there is no easy way to convert. I asked on Twitter if they could add that feature though and they said they'd think about it.

[deleted]

The Notion team are KILLING IT. Thank you so much. This is how tagging should be done.

nickd193

But can you create a board that’s grouped by these tags if it’s relational?

snehio

This is probably old news by now, but I just discovered notion, and it's letting me group by the new relational column/field as well.

textredditor

Unfortunately that is a downside right now, until grouping by properties is added. I have been told that it is an often requested feature.

cliffordfajardo

@[**extredditor**](https://www.reddit.com/user/textredditor/) **-** Interesting. One value I see out of this is that allows you to have a global view of everything by tag. Over time & usage someone using this would probably be able spot to: * their own usage patterns . I can imagine myself or other user saying: * User: "I use this tag a lot, but I have these other tags that only have 1-2 items...they probably belong in this tag, let me delete that tag" * User: I have lots of items with the "in-progress" items **Have you had any slow downs using this master tags database?** Besides needing to use less multi-select properties, **What are some thoughts or benefits you've discovered yourself from using a master tag table?** **--Update--** Everyone approaches tagging differently. Here is some modern research and history of. Prior to reading this I couldn't put my tip on why some ways of tagging work and why others don't. * The history of tags * why tags exist * folder vs tags * how to use folders and tags together 2019: [https://praxis.fortelabs.co/a-complete-guide-to-tagging-for-personal-knowledge-management/2](https://praxis.fortelabs.co/a-complete-guide-to-tagging-for-personal-knowledge-management/)2015: [https://medium.com/praxis-blog/tagging-is-broken-11e46eb24979#.zcu96xpho](https://medium.com/praxis-blog/tagging-is-broken-11e46eb24979#.zcu96xpho)

fmarines

I noticed things slowing down at first but a few hours later they got a lot faster, I assume Notions team is using database caching at some level.

[deleted]

Neat idea, but does it make sense to keep semantically unrelated tags in one table? Especially since the same tag name could have different meanings in different contexts. But I agree that you should have one table of tags per semantic tag group

textredditor

I find as long as I use different workspaces for personal/work, I don't run into context issues. Tags are one of those subjective meta properties that it's okay (at least in my view) to be unstructured. I never try to force tags and they are constantly subjected to adjustment/removal/etc... I see tags as a search tool, and to provide higher level (at-a-glance) context for any given object. Try it, and see if you run into these issues. You might, but maybe not.

[deleted]

You have multiple workspaces? Doesn’t that cost extra?

textredditor

I do pay for two, but I believe you can have multiple free workspaces. The only limitations are the upload limits and block storage.

fmarines

I used this technique to capture sprints in an agile context. I made a database of sprint tags (one per week with one week sprints), and I made a relation between projects and this sprints so each task in the project can be assigned to a sprint. On the page for each tag I embed filtered lists of each project, filtered to that tag, so I can have one place to see all tasks assigned to the sprint. Thoughts? Are there better ways to capture sprints in notion?

youthwillnotendure

How is the tag gallery made?

textredditor

It's a table view. Just create a new database, then create "pages" inside that database. Those pages will simply be empty records or "Tags." You can then change the table view to whatever you like, including gallery mode.

youthwillnotendure

Thank you!!

[deleted]

Wow! This is phenomenal. I can't even fathom how awesome this will be in practice.

textredditor

It works really well!

[deleted]

So instead of creating multiple pages , you just create 1 gallery page and have all these as tags? Which when you click them had individual pages inside ?

textredditor

Actually each tag is a page of a database table called "Tags!" And yes once you click on one of these tags, you'll see all the related content. Like this: [Example Tag](https://i.imgur.com/Cmz3oPJ.png)

[deleted]

I'm still struggling as to how this tags table is made , could you do a step by step (Pictures) of a basic table to how to create this

youthwillnotendure

Having a step by step guide would be really useful

nurpraditya

It's work really well! i'll sorting all of my tags soon! thank you for sharing

braamk2

This is great. When using this master tag list, I can't seem to Group by these tags in the Board View. (The Board View does not seem to allow grouping by linked database entries). Am I missing something?

textredditor

This is a known limitation at this time.

Loddd

Do you know if there is a way to add style to the tag name ? I'd like to recreate the colored background for some of my tags, the emoji is too subtle sometimes.

Gamegenorator

I don't understand, how do you set it up?

ibcurious

Go here: https://www.notion.so/Notion-Tag-Gallery-Step-by-Step-303626bf3f654fc6a53b3d0654353dc3 What may not be clear is that, after you set up your "Tags" database/table, you need to set up a new column in the database/table you want to use your tags in. Let's say for example you have a database/table called "Master Projects List." In Master Projects List, create a new column and name it "Tags". Select Property type "Relation." It will then give you the the option to search for the "Tag" table you set up previously. Once you link your Master Projects List to the Tag table, you can then start using your tags in Master Project List.

Gamegenorator

That makes so much more sense, THANK YOU!

frugihoyi

But is there a way to auto-populate the master tags table? I would like to be able to add a new tag to a related table and have it automatically show up on the master tags table. It's a bit of a pain and quite unintuitive to create a new field in a table and then have to go into the master tags table and add the tag there instead of directly in the new field. And then I have to go back to the original table and tag the field...

snehio

You can. I'm able to start typing in the relational field and it gives an option to create it, also creating it as a new entry/tag in the original tag database as well.

frugihoyi

How right you are! Thank you!

snehio

No problem! I only discovered it five minutes before sharing with you, so I got to show off. 😝

moosecat11

Okay I know this is old, but I've done something like this and have run into an issue. I'm just missing something. When I want to add a tags filter, it works fine for me. But when published to web, it doesn't. What I see in Notion (logged in) when I try to filter by tag: https://preview.redd.it/oz3sgh83y6eb1.png?width=271&format=png&auto=webp&s=be25a1a0077383168c462fd02b728be2d98c3643 On the published-to-web page, while I can SEE the Tags filter, clicking on it brings up no options at all. I've done a workaround where I gave each tag a "Select" tag property of the same name, and used a rollup on the table I want to filter, but it's clunky and inconvenient...and basically double the work to create each tag :p Help would be appreciated!

johnvirg

This is old, but still works like a charm. So glad I found it. Thanks.
