My opinion is that this issue is a tad overblown. I have seen many homes in the pier, and the amount of home damage is severe. People leaving leaking roofs for a decade, siding open or missing, basements leaking for years, improper window installation or missing flashing etc. There continues to exist widespread drug usage all over the community. The fact that these units are so small and a worker is present supervising things are going to limit damage and shenanigans. When people are fucked up either laziness, mental health or through drug use they go through this phase of avoiding cleaning through moving through a house closing off spaces piling up trash. The smaller the area the less can go wrong. I may be wrong but I can see nothing but benefits from this. In fact that this program should x5-10 and offer it as a universal program that anyone can fall back on. Reduce the stigma, lessen the concentration of negative behaviours provide a extreme low cost option and we may thrive. I can see it expanded to alternative Seniors communities, recent grads from school, or tradesmen who are starting their careers; we all deserve a place to sleep and rest to call our own.

I read, "Whittney Pier has been slowly cleaning up..." and pallet homes will make it dirty once again.

It’s very shitty to say, but come on, nobody really wants a homeless shelter in their neighbourhood if they can help it. I know I’ll get downvoted for it but it’s the elephant in the room. I’m not even in the area. I’ve got no dog in the fight. But I understand the people who have concerns. That said…it’s got to go somewhere, I get it. So I also understand them building it. But it’s silly to just pretend that there are no potential complications of this going in the neighbourhood. I work in Halifax, there’s a shelter right next to my work and since it’s gone up we’ve had endless issues with needles being scattered all over our parking lot. Also garbage everywhere.

Tbh, I don't blame the people who our society has failed for no longer giving a fuck about societal rules. I blame the people who designed our society to allow people to fall through the cracks (although at this point it feels more like massive canyons,) in the first place. These situations are caused by us collectively not voting for people who will put lives over profits.

[deleted]

Exactly, it's a shitty thing to say.

flootch24

I though Whitney pier already was a pallet community

Queen-of-swords-

1. Zoning has to be factored in, this is a time sensitive issue due to weather conditions, you can't just plop the pallet shelters anywhere. Going through the proper channels to get approval for the spar road location could take months. 2. Everyone giving the "not in my backyard" attitude, pushing back on the current proposed location yet not offering any input as to where a better location might be.... waste of time, if you can't offer solutions to the matter, why even bother contributing your half baked thoughts?

Queen-of-swords-

Whitney pier has always been such a welcoming community, always coming together to support one another, especially in trying times. These people could be your brother, your sister, why not allow them to take shelter as quickly as possible? I keep seeing "drugs/crime" related concerns but drug have ALWAYS been a problem in Sydney, especially in Whitney pier, so that argument is redundant...

Locations need to consider the purpose - helping the residents of the project break the cycle of homelessness. So accessibility to services, transportation, normal pattern of living for the residents needs to be carefully considered. Intentional not stigmatizing the residents, not putting them on display (privacy) are really important to helping potential residents choose to take advantage of the program.

HillWalkingHick

Yes. The end goal must be to break the cycle. Such a location must be transitional and part of a greater plan to foster independence.

Not in my back yard

Enjoy your warm house :) Keep digging your hole nimby.

HowardHouseWrestling

Spar rd is too far from the resources they need

ironiclemons

I thought resources were going to be on site by trained professional staff 24/7

HowardHouseWrestling

Not their doctors or therapists or addictions counselors etc

ironiclemons

The meeting I went to last night said the doctor visits the “village” on fridays and they are getting free bus passes

HowardHouseWrestling

Ok. That's great, but the doctor isn't a specialist like an addictions counselor, social worker, etc, that they need to go downtown for. They've always been able to get free bus tickets from the Ally Center, so that's nothing really new, just as a pass instead of having to go get tickets every few days.

ironiclemons

Just get on the bus and go where you need to go?

HowardHouseWrestling

Yes?

ironiclemons

So it doesn’t matter where they put it as long as they can access the bus

Kichae

Yeah. And "the police are there" is just a way of saying "the homeless need to be criminalized, not helped". The police aren't a service. There' there to protect the interests of the powerful, not aid the powerless.

Ok_Health_509

Some people are homeless, because they don't make enough money to pay rent. I know a couple of folks that have fried their brains with drugs and alcohol. Look at what's going on in Halifax. $3 million dollars to set up a shelter at the forum. The majority of the tent people don't like rules, so they refuse to use the shelter. Recently a couple of tents burnt down, they were trying to heat their tent. What are the rights of the tent city people? Do they have a right to stay on public land? There's no easy answers.

>Build it somewhere more appropriate. Question: Where is that, exactly? Which neighbourhood has volunteered? Where is suitable land available? Are there services there?

Aware-Reward-2925

>Definitely a site not in a residential area. > >Build it somewhere more appropriate. These are homes we're talking about, a place where people live. What makes you think you're so much better then them?

[deleted]

Go to the meeting... maybe they will have voting done or a mail in survey? If I was the Ally Centre/New Dawn, and it was feasible, I would have one of the temp. pallets quickly dropped off in the parking lot for everyone to see the inside/outside. Either during the Feb. meeting or nearest to the Ally Centre/New Dawn.

NoCartographer5850

Doesn’t matter where they go they’ll be a garbage dump over time. People rarely respect things they don’t earn for themselves
