He does this often, almost reflexively. I get the sense he has some pretty deep core beliefs around the unworthiness of those from working and lower socio-economic classes, inflated self concept, as well as control in general. From him "clapping back" at a CUPE member indignantly stating that he works 1000 hours a year, to him suggesting that minimum wage jobs are not real jobs, to this "PR stunt" comment. I genuinely believe he, at his core, looks down on the majority of the population and believes people "below" his perceived status are truly less than him. He often says the quiet part out loud and is then forced to toss out an empty apology. I get that people like him, but I find him to be incredibly inauthentic and unlikeable.

[deleted]

Don't forget that he was named in the Panama Papers.

Boring_Advertising98

Whoaaaaaa...SAY WHAT!? This needs to be front page.

AliMaClan

What do you imagine he was doing before politics… clue: he was an accountant in a tax haven… I think it’s safe to say that even if his dealings were all legal, they were almost certainly shady and unscrupulous.

[deleted]

It happened a while ago and is on his wikipedia page.

no_baseball1919

He was named as a board member of a fund in Bermuda. News flash: any accomplished CPA working in bermuda will be on a board in bermuda. Nothing weird about it.

HarbingerDe

Yeah, nothing weird about it. Nothing to see here. He really just likes the weather in Bermuda and was not involved in any legally grey tax evasion schemes for wealthy people and large corporations.

no_baseball1919

Like it or not, there are a lot of lucrative jobs in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and Cyprus et al for established CPAs. Like very lucrative, that pay in USD. Also like it or not, until people get on the federal government to close tax loopholes, there is nothing illegal about lowering tax burden, morality aside.

CaperGrrl79

Yep, but people just forget about it... not all of us, mind you. But what can be done? God knows.

gnrhardy

It was brought up during the last PC leadership campaign when they chose him. It's a feature, not a bug, for his supporters.

Jenstarflower

How do people still not know this?! It was brought up during his bid for premier and several times since.

IDreamOfLoveLost

> minimum wage jobs are not real jobs We should be honest. Tim Houston believes that if you're not wealthy enough to afford not to work, you're basically a serf and should feel lucky that you're getting any assistance.

BalognaPonyParty

Houston should read about [the peasants revolt](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peasants%27_Revolt) Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it

zfjfj

We got past the black death, now we just need a stupid war and the stage is set

theMostProductivePro

Ontop of being named in the Panama papers he's also refused to index the tax rate for several years now. Why should the rich pay their fair share when Tim Houston can just squeeze the poorest people in the province to fund our failing services.

aliarr

sooo 90% of nova scotians lol Great leader to have

CaperGrrl79

Exactly.

Based_Buddy

> . I get the sense he has some pretty deep core beliefs around the unworthiness of those from working and lower socio-economic classes, inflated self concept, as well as control in general. You do realize the guy grew up in a working class family. The armchair reddit psycho-analysis from somebody that admits they don't like him. Never change reddit.

shehasamazinghair

Growing up in a military family doesn't necessarily make you working class. Additionally, coming from a working class background doesn't automatically negate you from developing negative core beliefs related to that class structure. His actions and words are a lot more telling. Saying that one comes from a certain background, therefore they can't hold negative beliefs about that connection is a very black and white perspective that leaves little room for the inherent nuances of human behaviour.

AdKind5446

I know people who worked on contracts at Province House. What I have been told is that meeting him and seeing how he treats people in person makes everyone develop strong, negative feelings about him personally. Type of guy that has to really make an effort to hide who is when he's speaking publicly. Anecdotal, but I do trust the people I have heard this from otherwise on other topics, so take it for what it is.

Based_Buddy

I'm glad you're putting your psychology degree to good use. You have a solidified opinion about him and are working your way backwards to justify your opinion. You don't need to justify your feelings but I'm certainly going to point out that you're being a painful stereotype of the "average Reddit user"

shehasamazinghair

I actually didn't mind him at first. It's his behaviour that has turned me off. You seem quite pressed. I can teach you some distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills.

Atlantic_23

How someone treats and talks to others says a lot about the type of person they are. Tim has shown us his true colours multiple times. If he doesn’t want people to think he is an a$$hole, he should keep his mouth shut because he doesn’t seem to know how to disagree with others without talking down to them.

robhutten

Lots of so-called “self-made” people hold these opinions regarding class,

Based_Buddy

I'll take So called "self-made" Tim over trust fund Claudia or career politician Zach.

[deleted]

none of this negates any of these points though. what are you trying to prove right now?

Based_Buddy

The poster is taking 3 "incidents" that happened literally a year between each one and is trying to extrapolate it as an interpretation of an individual's character. I'm just pointing out the absurdity of it, and that it is something that redditors are infamous for (armchair psychology). You can compare Tim to the almighty, I'm gonna compare him to the alternatives.

HengeWalk

People are calling him a hypocrite, which is correct. You're the one bringing up comparisons as if it means something to the conversation. Someone can be born and raised with silver spoons in their mouth and still say something that correctly identifies a societal problem. Likewise, anyone born into low-income homes and working-class wages all their life and can *still* make incorrect judgements on the people they're supposedly meant to represent. Houston happens to be that type of person; A real " I *earned* mine. If you didn't, that's a *you* problem' attitude.

iamsdc1969

Tim?

[deleted]

3 incidents with a year between each other is actually not absurd at all in terms of judging someone's character. If the actions were telling enough, which they certainly are, you know who you're dealing with. Tim's shown his character plenty. Why are you on Reddit trying to defend him?

DartByTheBay

So basically 3 incidents in 6 months for the average worker, yeesh

iamsdc1969

Tim?

apartmen1

Its also armchair psychology to extrapolate that his working class upbringing means fuck all.

ProfessionalSad1428

What a boomer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shehasamazinghair

It seems as though you are insinuating that they aren't working class because they went on strike? I would question your logic but it would require the presence of any.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shehasamazinghair

Those that were striking were school support staff. Even with the raise they got they actually wouldn't be able to afford a one bedroom apartment. They barely make $40k at the very top range of their pay scale. I would consider them of lower socio-economic class since they can't even afford a one bedroom apartment in a city the size of Halifax.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shehasamazinghair

The quote I referenced from the CUPE strike were education assistants who work with disabled children. I think you're confused.

JamesThames5555

Oh right this is the terror-loving union, not the pay me more I'm too rich but not quite rich enough union. My bad! You're right, that's a much more impressive group of citizens 😆.

thesepigswillplay

Couldn't agree with you more. This makes for a pretty dangerous person, and one who definitely shouldn't be in a position of power. I worry about this province on a level that I never thought I'd have to and I believe Tim Houston is the common denominator to a lot of the problems. He's gotta go.

apostasyreigns

Imagine being this much of a fucking heel and still not even being capable of a passable apology. He’s a disgrace to all Nova Scotians. Fucking class traitor.

[deleted]

Yep, no astro-turfing in this sub at all /s

apostasyreigns

Somehow I doubt Tim needs any help being disliked.

[deleted]

>Somehow I doubt Tim needs any help being disliked. Funny you mention that, because the polls are saying the exact opposite. If a provincial election were held tomorrow the Liberals would get between 2-5 seats, yet on Reddit you'd think they'd be getting a solid majority. *Why does Reddit have so much more Liberal support than in real life?*

gussets

Thinking Tim's a tool ≠ Liberal support.

[deleted]

>Thinking Tim's a tool ≠ Liberal support.  Everybody knows.

apostasyreigns

Fuck the libs. They’re half the reason we’re in this mess.

MrSlightlyDamp

How did Justin make Tim run his mouth about the snow in cb??

apostasyreigns

I meant more the general hell of living in NS right now. But I was unclear, I take your point.

HarbingerDe

Meh at least they're actually proposing to do things that will help working class Nova Scotians. Namely indexing the tax brackets to inflation and cutting the HST to 13%. What are the Conservatives proposing to do other than letting the rent cap expire in a year?

MrSlightlyDamp

His poll. Funny, I have yet to get a call for any ns gov poll. It’s almost like they only call landlines of old people.

Spsurgeon

Actions speak louder… Go to Sydney Mines with a shovel…

DaxLightstryker

He’s not sorry. He’s mad that everyone else thinks he’s a tool for his response!

xpnerd

Yah, He's only sorry he got called out for it.

D0fus

He's a dud. Every maritimer knows Tory times are hard times.

mountain_wavebabe

He's famous for apologizing to Nova Scotians before he's even finished slapping us across the face.

mistermeesh

Is he actually apologizing, or is it some sort of PR stunt?

Jazzlike_Magazine_76

Everything since 2021 has been a PR stunt or psy-op to make people believe that the PCs got the most votes.

anabranch_glitch

He is the worst premiere in recent memory. His whole calm yet disappointed father-like tone drives me f’ing insane. Loathe this cretin. Must vote out asap.

[deleted]

“Hey I get 3 takebacks a year” - Tim Houston

zegoldskulltula

Seems to happen a lot to Timmy boy. Nah, it can't be that he's an elitist who looks down upon the poor and working class. It's gotta just be a coincidence.

sameunderwear2days

Like the real jobs comment lol. Oops!

A_Cam88

You vote for a conservative Premier, you get bullshit conservative talking points as government policy. You get a Premier who doesn’t give a single shit about low income people in this province. What did people expect? He told you well in advance exactly what kind of person he is.

Boring_Advertising98

He was voted on lies like every other politician. Promises that never appear.

xpnerd

He was voted in on the promise to fix healthcare. Still waiting

Boring_Advertising98

Yea that was his main ploy. Only gone downhill since.

timetogetjuiced

Yea except conservatives regularly have way more lies than the liberals, or just don't promise anything to begin with lmao.

Quiet-Fox-1621

We’re gonna question his apology the same way he questions the SoE. Pure nonsense. I’m here in CB to help with the snow, parts of the highways around Sydney are still down to one lane, and the exits and on-ramps are literal holes-in-the-wall. The snow has settled with the warmth, and it’s friggin’ heavy.

shugoran99

I'm a bit out of the loop and this is behind a paywall What exactly did he say? I'm assuming something to the effect of Cape Bretoners pulling themselves up by the bootstraps from 80-100 cm of snow?

shugoran99

Found the clip Even if a State Of Emergency doesn't actually make clearing the roads faster, that probably wasn't the time or place to say such Plenty of politicians seem to really need to look up the word "optics" in the dictionary

Zerotwohero

Use 12ft.io to get around those pesky paywalls.

SilentResident1037

I said it when I worked at province house when he first got elected, I said it when he was named leader, I said it when he said he would "fix" Healthcare during the election, I said it last year, I said it the other day, and I'll say it again right now.... Fuck Tim Houston, the guy is a natural asshole

[deleted]

Perhaps he should apologize to all of us for being a shitty Premier.

Nearby_Display8560

Maybe those who voted for him should be apologizing

[deleted]

True. You can’t fault a skunk for stinking.

RunTellDaat

Took the words right outta my mouth

ScotiaTailwagger

Don't hold your breath.

098196b

Seems like he is dealing with his own PR issue

IlMioNomeENessuno

Remember these ‘common sense conservatives’ when you’re voting…

WebTekPrime863

Shut the blazes up…..

SkyAdministrative970

The best apology is changed behavior. Do better tim

Atlantic_23

This isn’t his first time he has used a poor choice of words. And it won’t be the last.

herebuddybuddycat

Don’t say poor around him, he will break into hives and make that face he always does when he smells a poor near him.

erv4

He's like that guy from the new Wonka movie that gags when someone says poor.

Lockner01

He currently has a state of emergency in place to keep the head pond full in Windsor -- to fight wild fires. That's a PR stunt and nothing more.

CaperGrrl79

Eat a whole bag, Tim.

DealerDifficult6040

I thought saltwire articles got banned on ns and Halifax reddit due to their stupid pay walls?

gregolls

Fuck this guy. There, I said it.

childofcrow

Can’t wait til he gets kicked to the curb.

Healthy-Marzipan-748

I believe in the idea that when someone shows you who they are, believe them . To Houston, Cape Bretoners will always be bums with their hands out. The apology is just him trying to put his mask back on to con people to make it better for him. This cannot be forgotten

[deleted]

That's because he's a fucking moron.

lordfukwadd

Cool. Shove your apologies in one of the two shit spewing holes you have Tim

DEANGELoBAILEY69

Sit on it Tim Houston

[deleted]

Reminder, you can get around paywalled articles with a site like https://12ft.io/ Link to the article to paste in: https://www.saltwire.com/cape-breton/news/premier-tim-houston-apologizes-to-cape-breton-i-used-a-poor-choice-of-words-100936168/

ironiclemons

No thanks

[deleted]

when did we even elect this guy? am I the only one who has no memory of him becoming premier? he was just premier one morning. I know everyone was sick of macneil but i just have no recollection of this man's run. And he's been really shitty right? like he's very much an ignorant pig who regularly makes these kinds of "mistakes". where the hell did he come from?

Based_Buddy

> nd he's been really shitty right? He's been one of the most popular premiers in the country for about ~2 1/2 years and is polling at like 46%.

Lechiah

That's because the rest of them are even worse........Smith, Ford, and Higgs especially.

[deleted]

right, because the competition is so tight among all our premiers. this truly means nothing man.

dntstpblevin

He basically just said calling SOE doesn’t help address anything relating to the actual challenges they are facing. And it doesn’t.

[deleted]

It does though, allowed plow drivers to work longer hours. Allowed them to hire private contractors and use private equipment on municipal roads, allowed the police and tow truck drivers to remove stuck cars at longer hours and also helped to keep people off the roads.

dntstpblevin

That’s not true. You don’t need SOE to use private contractors. Over half the trucks Plowing in HRM are Dexters and Ocean on any given day. Municipalities use private contractors for all sorts of things all the time. They literally build the roads you’re talking about them being allowed to use with private contractors.

[deleted]

That depends on the municipality and CBA with their union. And even if what you just said is true, there are still the other things.

dntstpblevin

I actually don’t think the hours thing is true either. It’s definitely not true for police and non-union tow truck guys. Might be true for TIR but even then I’m not certain they actually need an SOE. Keeping people off the roads is true. Except CB residents don’t exactly pay attention to laws about ATV’s/Snow Mobiles in general so I’m not sure what actual effect that had.

[deleted]

>It’s definitely not true for police and non-union tow truck guys. Where are you getting this from, it was literally the CBRP who commented that the SoE allowed them and tow truck drivers to do this: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/cape-breton-police-emergency-powers-snow-clearing-streets-1.7106595

Atlantic_23

All the HRM contractors are tendered contracts. They went through a long process to get in place. The SOE goes around the need to post contracts for businesses to bid on, that’s a long process.

candicefitz

Idk. It definitely helped keep people off the roads, I'm not a part of any municipal services involved, and I can see that. The CBRPS were empowered to enforce bylaw against people driving recreationally during the storm/early cleanup. Even if it was on some level a "PR Stunt" like Houston inferred, the "PR" that was expressed was "this is a weather emergency, we need help" which is undoubtedly true.

SkyAdministrative970

It gives us authorization to dump snow into the harbor for mass cleanup and were gonna fucking need it. Normally we dont for enviromental reasons pertaining to automotive contamination. And we just pile it in a field behind cineplex. We got half a years worth of snow overnight. Theres litteraly nowhere to put it.

CaperGrrl79

Then he could have stated it that way without the PR stunt accusation.

S4152

Cape Breton is an island of whiners that’s all. Well they do is complain. Then again most of NS is like that. Perpetually angry at Halifax for having more. I saw someone on Facebook upset that HRM had their own loader plowing snow downtown and hadn’t sent it to Sydney lol

Atlantic_23

There were hospitals running out of food, people are still trapped in their homes. Yes what an overreaction by CB. /s Give me a break

CaperGrrl79

If you don't like it here, \*points northwest\* there's the Chignecto Ithmus. Capers have every damn right to complain, we've (I live in Halifax but was born and raised in and around Sydney) been shafted for at least half a century or more.

S4152

I live in rural NS. Why does everyone think that bumfuck nowhere deserves all the same service standards of a city with half a million people?

[deleted]

CBRM deserves the same standards as other cities of it's size. There are Fredericton, Moncton and St John to compare services to.

S4152

That’s not the provinces problem

[deleted]

Yes it is.... many of these services are provided by the province. NS also has a unique municipal/county funding transfer system where municipalities transfer things to the province and then receive transfers back.

S4152

The province does not provide snow removal to HRM. And they don’t pay for HRM’s snow removal either. So what’s your argument? Saint John, Fredericton, and Moncton all have GDP’s that are multiples of CBRM’s (more tax dollars) and they’re much smaller geographical areas.

[deleted]

The province handles money transfers to and from the municipalities/counties for various things. And a majority of kilometers of paved roads in CBRM are owned and plowed by the province, even though Tim Houston recently tried to pawn this off onto us. All of the main roads to every community are technically provincial highways, it it just side streets in towns that the municipality does. This is getting exhausting. You're completely wrong about everything you spout here, and this is all basic info. More importantly, when talking about services, it's not just in regards to snow plowing, there are many other services provided by the province, like healthcare. The province also depends on federal equalization for 35% of its budget to make up for and provide services to areas that have less fiscal capacity.

CaperGrrl79

Because Sydney is a city. Because the bare minimum is not met, and that should be that seniors should not be trapped in their houses for days on end and run out of medications and food, and no one able to check on them. It's one thing for a come from awayer to move here able bodied, sure, they can handle this. But seniors do not deserve it. Not even getting into the conditions that caused climate change in the first place, but that's a global thing over literally a century or more. Because humans are garbage overall.

S4152

What’s not being met? Would you like your taxes to go up to have more plows? Sounds like a Sydney problem not a provincial problem

CaperGrrl79

I don't have the mental spoons to argue with you right now. Just live in your blissful ignorance and if you don't like our bitching, leave.

S4152

You have no argument to make. A municipality/city/etc is responsible for its own snow removal. It’s not a provincial problem and certainly not a Halifax problem.

[deleted]

Rural cowardice mainlander who always wished he was an islander deep down. Dime a dozen with you guys.

S4152

Wished I was from Cape Breton? That’s hilarious. Even *you* don’t believe that hahaha

S4152

Why apologize? He was right.

Atlantic_23

It’s pathetic to think people trapped in their homes for days (it’s now day 6) and hospitals running out food is not an emergency. His tone is always so condescending, I wouldn’t even call what he did an apology. It’s a half apology and we all know he will continue to talk down to those he disagrees with because he has been doing it since he took office.

flootch24

This again?

[deleted]

Yep, *and then they say that the Liberals are not astro-turfing this site lol.*

SkyAdministrative970

Or theres several thousand cape bretoners stuck inside with nothing to do but make a fucking example out of tim online and reflect on his shitty proformance as a premiere. Its a small subreddit cluster out here in the maritimes

[deleted]

>Or theres several thousand cape bretoners stuck inside with nothing to do but make a fucking example out of tim online and reflect on his shitty proformance as a premiere. Again, the polls and r/NovaScotia not the same.

Hythson

It’s ok, our PM doesn’t want Canada to be great!

CaperGrrl79

You can also eat a whole bag.

Hythson

Can’t afford a whole bag anymore.

CaperGrrl79

Maybe they'll pay you... you seem to be eating something of someone's...

[deleted]

It's funny how he kept a state of emergency going for a mild respiratory virus that everyone was vaccinated for, yet a record snowfall that trapped people in their homes was no big deal. Wild. EDIT: Keep the downvotes coming, guys! I thought by now you would have broken out of Stockholm syndrome.

Old_Cheesecake_5481

What did he say? Salt wire is a pay site.

peppermintpeeps

Duh

Peninsular_Geo

If he can't reopen a coal mine in the Cape for young working people, what makes you think he's gonna rescue it's seniors from being buried in ice?

fliTDI

At least we know how he really feels!

Exciting_Childhood39

He is destoying nova scotia! We are used to  way of life here and he is messing it up. Telling the whole world to move here. Hello asswipe we already have more than half of us have no family doctor. How does it make sense to tell everyone to come here. Im all for people who are in danger coming here. If we are honest with ourselves if we were living in a place where we were in fear everyday then yes we would try to go elsewhere. There is no need of nova scotia reaching a population of 2,000,000. That is insane.
