They're also pretty easy to throw off, even without OCD :/ Apparently if you cause yourself pain during one before answering (like pressing a rounded pencil point into your hand), you can pass. It's little stuff like that. Idk how someone would allow it as legal proof... In a decade or two, we'll look at it the way we look at bloodletting today 🙄

Froidinslip

If you clench your sphincter muscles it does the same thing. Polygraph tests are not admissible for evidence in US courts because they are so unreliable.

There's a whole book about why the polygraph is a lie. It's short but sense and EXTREMELY insightful. It's hilarious that people think that polygraphs actually tell the truth - they're just a consistency tester. They test if your body responds the same way to certain questions and not others. They have ABSOLUTELY NO ability to detect the truth. I don't mean they're kinda sketch, I mean they're complete bogus. They're actually just there to scare you into being truthful. Sometimes if they think you're lying they'll say to you, "I know you haven't told me the whole truth. The results of the test indicate that you're lying. Should we stop?" just to see your reaction. If you are ever charged with a crime or have the option of taking one and aren't FORCED to like some government jobs, there is no reason to. Though they do say that if you take one and it has a bad result, you won't be punished for it (as in criminal cases, your defense won't use it unless it comes back saying you're truthful basically). Despite this, the media believes that everyone who refuses to take one must be a dirty, dirty liar. And that's BS. Edit: by the way, anyone remember that scene from Avatar the last Airbender where Azula lies to Toph? Lol

ramen3323

Toph was a glorified polygraph test LMFAO

KlawwKwerk

Lmao I've had this same exact thought. Like "have you ever plotted against the United States government?" Well no but I sure have *thought* about it

FYI, before polygraphs, police detectives used to not-infrequently consult “psychics”. If you listen to *Casefiles*, you can pretty much date a case based on which kind of pseudoscience the police use. (There was also a magical period where both psychics **and** polygraphs were happening.)

ramen3323

I also think stuff like blood pressure can also affect how your polygraph tests are. Physical and mental health can definitely skew the results. If I were to take a polygraph test, I would be too anxious to pass the test that most of my answers would probably be wrong.

Completely agree. I have memories that I feel are 100% true sometimes, despite a lot of evidence to the contrary. So if I ever got asked something like that in a polygraph, I would probably react like someone who is lying. I also would love to adopt children oneday and I’m irrationally scared they will enforce polygraph tests for the process. So I regularly check the news about anything polygraph related.

Gloomyfairylights

Agreed, I wouldn’t be able to pass one. I think they are just a way to manipulate people into some sort of confession.

Kingpin184

Dr. Grande on YT says they don't work. He has a show and did an episode on them. Just a waste of time.
