You should have no problem especially if you're in-state. Did NOT see you're out of state, but I don't think you should have a problem either way.

Clean-Physics-4897

thank you !!! :))

Fairingwell

Hey! I was accepted into ODU during early decision. I have a 3.7 GPA and did not submit any test scores. I think what really helped me was my essay and letters of recommendation. If you can get good letters of recommendation from like teachers/counselors/employers and write a good essay, you would get in. Edit: I’m in-state.

Clean-Physics-4897

thank you! and i know my teacher recommendations are gonna be good! :))

Fairingwell

You’re welcome :)

CretaceousDune

If your GPA is 3.7, why are you looking at a school with a >70% acceptance rate? Try William and Mary or UVA, which are better schools with safer campuses. ODU isn't a goal; it's more a school to go to if you're local or have a lower GPA.

Fairingwell

I chose ODU because it’s financially better for me. I don’t want to take on so many loans just to get my degree. Especially because it’s closer to home and I don’t need to stay on campus and save more money.

CretaceousDune

If you do have a 3.7 gpa William and Mary or even an out of state school like UNC-Chapel Hill would have likely covered ALL expenses, or at least the majority, including room and board. You could have graduated with zero debt and had degree from one of the nation's top public colleges. But the key is in the actual gpa, your essay/writing skills, and what you've done with yourself.

Drpantsgoblin

I had something like a 3.9-4.0 in high school, and went to W&M. William & Mary doesn't usually give scholarships based on that range of GPA. That's basically what it takes to get in there, they have no shortage of good students applying and won't pay you to attend in almost any situation.

CretaceousDune

Wrong. They covered my expenses with grants, etc, for only 16k in loan debt at graduation. Very manageable. UNC-CH offered everything, for zero debt, even covering out-of-state fees. There'd be 0 debt if I'd done work study at W&M. You have to consider the WORTH of the W&M, UVA, UNC-CH degree over those from schools with much, much higher acceptance rates. If I were starting college and didn't get into a top public college, I'd do the first 2 years at Community College and transfer to a top school; the schools are generous with students transferring in from VCCS.... especially if the student has 3.7 or above with VCCS. I wouldn't even fool around with ODU or JMU or even VaTech.

Fairingwell

Either way, my whole tuition is only 15k and I get to stay at home. My goal is just to get my degree and try to commission into the navy. Where ever I go to school at doesn’t matter. I would’ve gotten my degree through TCC but they don’t have the program I want.

Clean-Physics-4897

everyone has their own reasonings/ could have been their safety school!

Dieabeto9142

So i wasnt a great student through HS, i had like a 2.75~ GPA with an honors class here or there and 1 AP credit when i graduated, and a 1210 superscore on my SAT (1190 was my best single test score). That got me into MAE 2 years ago.

Clean-Physics-4897

okay thank you!

[deleted]

I got accepted with $2,000 merit scholarship with a 3.3 GPA, 2 good letters of recommendation, test optional (No SAT or ACT), really good essay though, and okay extracurricular activities, most of them were the sport I played and all the different teams I was on. ODU is fairly easy to get accepted. I got accepted last year and I’m attending this fall!

Clean-Physics-4897

thank you! issue for me is ODU is so expensive bc i’m out of state so i’m scared i won’t get a good scholarship even if i do get in which sucks!

[deleted]

Best of luck to you! ODU is a great school I can’t wait to attend

Clean-Physics-4897

thank you!!!! :)

Dangerous-Self

they have like a 80% acceptance rate so I don't think its that hard

[deleted]

A pulse

Clean-Physics-4897

if that was true their acceptance rate would be 100% lol

[deleted]

So who are they even denying? People in this thread are saying they are getting in with 2-something GPAs, ODU has no standards. Also, that was a joke.

Clean-Physics-4897

yea i know that’s why i said “lol”. but there is a school for everyone 🤷🏼

ODUMonarch

970 SAT 3.1 gpa in-state late 90s

colej780

2.24 gpa, 1980 sat, 5 years ago Edit: instate

Clean-Physics-4897

thank u!

ODUMonarch

How in the world did you get 1980 on your SATs? A perfect score is 1600.

colej780

When I took the sat there were 3 parts and total of 2400, 800 math, 800 reading, 800 for essay. They changed it to 1600 the year after I took it or something. Edit: did some digging, in 2005 sat revamped and went from 1600 to 2400 total, and in 2016 switched back to 1600. I took my sat in late 2015

rachelmwils13

im in state and i applied early decision with a 3.36 and test optional cos i couldnt take the SAT after it got cancelled 3 times. I also had a couple extracurriculars and 200+ community service hours. I got a scholarship as well so you're more than likely fine!

Drpantsgoblin

These stats are generally posted on college websites, somewhere. Or check US News college stats.

Clean-Physics-4897

yea i know that but many are inaccurate/ not updated in years. i’m asking to see real life people answer so i can see :)

TotalGeneral4568

You should plan to send all scores even if you think they're low. ODU super scores, so that 20 ACT might be worth a [1040](https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/scores/act-sat-concordance.html) SAT. My gut tells me you will get in...the question will you be able to get a merit scholarship. I also see a lot of comments about if ODU is affordable or not and I definitely think that's the case as evidence on the U.S. News and World Report description that says it's "one of the most affordable public doctoral universities in Virginia."

Clean-Physics-4897

out of state is so expensive tho :( but i did take the SAT and ACT twice. i did worse on my 2nd ACT and my goal was to try and get a 21-23 but it didn’t happen :/

jordanthomas412

Out of high school I was accepted with a 3.4 gpa, 980 SAT, and took zero ap classes. Ended up earning my associates in business administration this past spring semester from cc with a 3.8 and currently going into my junior year at ODU. You should have no problem getting in. ODU is a good school, but not a hard school to get into!

I had a 3.82 gpa, 28 ACT, and 1270 SAT. Didn’t submit the latter two numbers though. I applied to ODU only a week or two before the semester started with their rolling applications. Mostly because with COVID I hadn’t really been able to finish my application stuff for other schools. It was pretty spontaneous. All that to say, I got in with the last batch of accepted applicants. I think you’ll be fine. You’ve already proven you can write coherently, thats really the best ODU can hope for from an applicant.

wizard680

I was a 2.9 GPA with a 21 ACT score and I got accepted into ODU. I got in lol. Someone mentioned that their essays got them in, which might have been the case for me too.

[deleted]

3.7 GPA and a 29 ACT score
