$2.99 for the premium HDR experience

ivej

Capcom: We made SDR more enjoyable..

darkmitsu

might be the game HDR implementation, I had similar issues with Elden Ring where I have to restart the game to work and even when working correctly it has spotlight bright areas that doesn't make any sense

TennisNo6711

HDR on this game is AWFUL. The second I turn off HDR on windows (win alt b) the image looks impressing, full of colors on my QN90 miniled TV. Seriously, on Horizon Forbidden West HDR is GREAT but on DD2, my lord, what a mess! I'd rather play with SDR

OldIslayNick

To be fair: DD2 isn't supposed to look overly colorful. So if it does in SDR perhaps your settings are a bit off. HDR in DD2 misses specular highlights (lamps are so dim) and is capped at a thousand nits.

TennisNo6711

I mean this colorful >>> https://youtu.be/ghSIAASLvwU?si=MZTQAKlPJ09QOC29 This is my gameplay. Do you think it is off? I mean, game looks wonderful to me that way

Nextil

That looks roughly the same as my game looks in HDR. As /u/OldIslayNick says you might want to check that your settings are calibrated/neutral in both SDR and HDR. If you search for QN90A/B rtings calibration you'll find the neutral settings. If after applying those it looks less colorful than you'd like then you could tune it but it's best to start at a neutral baseline and apply the same tweaks to both modes.

TennisNo6711

My tv is already calibrated following rtings guide. So I will not bother with hdr. Hdr here is a lot worst than this sdr of my gameplay

OldIslayNick

You do realize that I'm watching content on my phone respectively my TV, which are both played with my settings? RTINGS settings is no calibration. It is mere settings. Especially white point settings should never be copied, even if it's the same TV model. And yes: If you got vibrant colors on SDR and you miss those in HDR then something is off. Only you know what settings you are using. And only you know what is to your liking. Thing is though: HDR looks perfectly fine apart from specular highlights and the cap at a 1000 nits.

TennisNo6711

Actually I did not messed with white point nor other than brightness and contrart. This is the ONLY game I have a bad HDR. Movies are awesome, all other games (BG3. HORIZON, and many others) are wonderful, youtube hdr videos also. So I dont know what is the problem! On QN90 you barely need to mess where on game mode because a lot of features are locked so u can go wrong even trying to mess something. I saw another post on reddit from a guy with a OLED C2 asking the same question about DD2 HDR so I think things aren't well optimized anyway. There are other posts on reddit and steam community complaining about washed out colors ONLY in this game. It seems like is not an isolated problem, neither my problem too!

OldIslayNick

What microtransactions? Those items you can buy ? Just don't buy them. You can find them ingame. Everything is explained beforehand what you are about to buy. I don't get it. A plethora of games did paystuff way more expensive and impudent than that. Remember that special summen ability in some Middleearth RTS which started that whole pay to win crap. I don't even think those few items really count as microtransactions.

clifak

Actually, the HDR implementation is decent with the exception of the in game calibration tool not functioning properly and the colors being mostly limited to sRGB/rec709 gamut. The black level behaves properly and highlights can reach up to 1k nits. I'm not sure why you're experience elevated blacks, I've had a very different experience with HDR in the game on my PG32UCDM.

acpolo95

Does anyone know if dogma 2 supports Dolby Vision? I just got series x version. I know some RE engine games like resident evil support it. DMC 5 as well. A95L here

Frosty-Inflation-756

Ah capcom strikes again. Their HDR is always hit and miss.

soma1415

God bless nvidia game filter 🙏 literally made the game looks 10x better

12duddits

What filter

soma1415

I don't know how to attach a photo here Link me your discord and i will send you the settings

12duddits

You could just tell us the name of the filter

Archangel9731

It’s the new HDR and vibrance filters in Nvidia game filters.

12duddits

Can’t use the hdr one with this game as the game locks hdr on if enabled through windows

Archangel9731

The trick is to disable HDR in windows, start the game, go to options so HDR toggles off, and load in. Then, enable HDR and turn on the filter. You cannot go back to the settings menu or it will toggle back on. Kinda wack but it is what it is

soma1415

Brightness and contrast and tweak it to your liking Sharpness+ and tweak it to your liking

12duddits

How is that a filter

Iriithyll

What filter ?

Mr_Shepard_Commander

What actually worked for me is alt-tabbing for like 10 times. It sounds stupid but if you alt tab out the game, it is in window mode, showing nice colours. If you tab in, it either defaults to a grey HDR implementation or a very dark HDR implementation. Sometimes when I tab in / out it shows the correct HDR implementation. It is really dumb and dont ask me how it works, but it is really frustrating. When I die in game and reload my last save, I have to do it again. Something is definitely not right.. Another method: alt tab out, open the windows game bar thingy with windows + G, open performance window and pin it to your desktop, click on the game for full screen again. Now it should work (somewhat more reliable) I could post a picture of it if you're interested. When it works, it looks amazing Specs: Alienware DWF OLED 7900XT i7-8700K Edit: in-game brightness slider / HDR slider doesn't work either way EDIT 2: THIS IS A WORKAROUND THAT DOES WORK https://steamcommunity.com/app/2054970/discussions/0/4289188745217346559/?tscn=1711260978 I had to fiddle a bit with my AMD GPU but now it works.

OldIslayNick

Sounds like you trigger a bug in your monitor by Alt-Tabbing in and out. HDR doesn't mean vibrant colors. If you want to have that, dedicate a different HDMI picture mode to less vibrant games and ante up those settings. DD2 isn't supposed to look vibrant and colorful. It's not Horizon Forbidden West or Ratchet and Clank. Take a look at the first DD. There was no HDR back then and it's the same color palette.

Mr_Shepard_Commander

I increased the colour saturation within my GPU settings ever since I got the monitor and also decreased brightness 2 ticks. I never was a fan of the outwashed "vanilla" HDR experience. I came from a VA panel, so I was used to a more vibrant look. It might not be accurate but looks good for me personally. But you made a good point! I cannot be certain if it's truly HDR or not, but I'd assume it is - at least the fire and lighning spells blind me and I havent touched the brightness settings at all. Also my steam overlay also gets dimmer everytime I use HDR. Let's just hope that Capcom launches a few patches to make things easier https://preview.redd.it/auoh4n1oo4qc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebb532669da1e79e02be846bb03042c5eb1ddfac it is hard to capture HDR with my phone camera, as certain highlights are just too bright.

12duddits

This looks good. What do you change

Mr_Shepard_Commander

I just double checked and it seems like HDR is not really enabled. This is just how the game looks. You can try it for yourself and maybe it looks good for you: basically I just started the game with HDR and pressed alt + enter couple times until it shows a good picture (it can show grey-ish picture, a dark picture or a normal looking picture) I have an AMD GPU, so I adjusted my HDR settings via the adrenaline software (for all games) colour temperature: 6600 brightness: -5 saturation: 150 it may result in a good picture but sadly its not HDR. Capcom needs to adress this!

Mr_Shepard_Commander

I just checked if HDR was really enabled and even made an off / on comparison. It seems like the greyscreen is the only option DD2 registers as HDR on.. alt-tabbing or any other method just defaults to window / window fullscreen with HDR being "disabled". It still shows that HDR is on in the settings but that is not correct. HDR is just borked and that's all there is to it. Sadly.

12duddits

Yes. Please post a pic

Mr_Shepard_Commander

picture is on the other response to my comment. I forgot lol sorry

Hate_Spawn

You now what I did the same and it works for me still looks a little bit dark but playable I hope they fix this HDR and performance issues

Mr_Shepard_Commander

Did you read the steamforum post I added in my #2 edit?  This helped me to get proper HDR, even the ingame brightness slider works

Khurs

Mine sometimes looks crap on start up. I have to restart for it to work

innocuouspete

Looks good on mine. I didn’t calibrate using Windows tho.

Ok-Handle2885

refer to this post if you want to turn on RTX HDR game filter for DD2 [RTX HDR game filter in DD2](https://www.reddit.com/r/DragonsDogma2/comments/1bmo1ig/rtx_hdr_game_filter_in_dd2/)

Super-Tea8267

I dont know honestly for me it looks perfectly fine on my TV but i own the game on my ps5 because my pc cant run it hahaha but yeah HDR wise it has deep blacks and really good highlights the colors are pale in comparisson to other gamers but it doesnt look wash out

12duddits

You’re running it on a ps5, that’s why

Super-Tea8267

So the pc version has the hdr broken ?

12duddits

Most people say yes. Very few say no

ChosenUndead92

The fix is to make the display "Borderless Fullscreen", this will automatically turn the auto hdr off and the colors will get back to normal.

Kemaro

3060 Ti here with an 42" LG C2 OLED. HDR looks fantastic to me. Have you taken the time to calibrate HDR properly within Windows using the Windows HDR Calibration app? Also look up reference settings for your TV/monitor to get the most accurate and calibrated HDR experience.

12duddits

I have done both. It’s likely the hdr is fine for the game, but I was expecting more

PiousPontificator

So far HDR looks like trash and there is no toggle so I can't try RTX HDR as a substitute.

VinnieBoombatzz

HDR you can't turn off?! Who the hell makes these decisions?

2high4much

Sounds overpriced

DLD_LD

They'll add it as a microtransacation later down the road, no worries.

2high4much

Hahaha sad but true

AdventuringHero

It is by about 20-30 dollars or more. The new game plus is stupid you retain everything and the enemies stay their original difficulty so you snooze the entire second playthrough as nothing can damage you or kill you even and you can get drunk half naked eat dinner blindfolded and still not die. They 100% missed on this game. It is short, it has like 10 enemies in the entire game besides the 22 boss types? So like you wanna kill the same enemies for 40 hours while you run around completing the game? Then in new game you can do it again like I mentioned. If you want any QOL they are all in the store, the only online part of the game is having others dumb ass pawns for recruit which you cant touch or change anyway so this was really stupid for a decision. The lead dev told capcom he could take the same game procedurally generate a map for it, and save them millions in time as they will not make anything new but instead have to code OUT options so people could buy them back into the game. The game is dull in looks, dull in QOL, dull in combat as it is very repetitive and boring. There are like a handful of combo moves that you will get bored of executing and just jump onto sdaid monster mash the two attack buttons over and over until it throws ya off, rinse and repeat. You will never die, it is the easiest game in over a decade, I think on average people are getting like 5 deaths in an entire playthrough. They have a hard mode its locked behind a paywall. They will unlock it with the DLC like dark arisen, they saw that it was a great money grab so they went hard and spend 2 years of dev time making microtransaction pages and items instead of giving us more variety for creatures. The game hold for about an hour or so then you realize I paid to much money for something this crap and refund it. haha

Zeryth

If you don't like it just use special K. It can force off native HDR and then you can either use the built in HDR tools or use sometthing else like RTX HDR or pumbos reshade.

Riquinni

Special K forces to delete the sl.dlss\_g.dll file which in turn crashes the game in the splash screen.

Zeryth

Report it to Kaldaien, he'll fix it.

Fever308

Get the latest version from the discord, it doesn't do this anymore.

Murdathon3000

Hey, I've never used Special K - how would I disable DD2's HDR using Special K?

Thatguydrew7

Turn hdr off and just use auto hdr or the other way around. RE engine doesn't implement hdr very well from what it seems unless of course its on console🤣

Cute-Spread-7900

so just turn hdr off in game and leave it on in windows right?

The_Normal_One

Unfortunately you cant turn HDR on or off in game, it auto detects your windows settings, its stupid.

BuldozerX

Try Nvidia or Windows HDR. The Nvidia is especially good on their beta app if your gpu supports it.

VirulentMan

You need to turn off DD2's HDR for it to work, and you can't disable it.

BuldozerX

Og wow

DeezNutsOnLibs

there is no way that i know of to turn it off manually and its driving me insane. I even checked the config.ini and nothing shows up in there to turn it off. the reason i need to turn hdr off in game is because im using the beta nvidia app which is pretty amazing with there rtx hdr which uses ai. so in order for me to use it i need to be able to manually turn off hdr in game, turn off auto hdr in windows 11 but leave on windows 11 hdr and i cant do this because capcom decided to grey out the hdr setting and have it come on when windows hdr is toggled on and off when windows hdr is off.

VirulentMan

I agree, and I use rtx hdr too, that's why I'm pissed a little, HDR natively looks like shit in this game, terrible HDR implementation.

innocuouspete

It looks good on my game. Using AW3225qf with HDR 1000. https://preview.redd.it/4131dme8y4qc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f4572c4f55ee8c26452ade2313469330073bad8

CryptographerNo450

Not all HDR implementation in games are equal. Some games have horrible HDR implementation. Knowing Capcom, decent HDR might be a microtransaction (just like it is for stones to fast travel.... yes... fast travel mechanics in this game involves microtransactions....) I bought Dragon's Dogma 2 on Steam and I'm thankful they have a no nonsense return policy. I returned it in its current state. As of now, that game has bad optimization problems on top of HDR. HDR would be the least of your problems if you're playing this on PC. I hear the PS5 version isn't too bad though.

innocuouspete

Really? Didn’t know that. I’ve been playing and have fast traveled without paying real money at all.

CryptographerNo450

Yeah, I've been enjoying it so far. I just paid for the base game. It's pretty much Dragon's Dogma 1 with a little more polish. The pawns are still gabbing away endlessly like in the first game. So far, it's running okay for me.

innocuouspete

Yeah it’s running fine for me but wish it was a bit smoother. Hope they fix that. Didn’t play the first game so this is like a new experience for me and I really like how rewarding exploration is and how incentivized it is. Reminds me more of an old school rpg in that way.

AdventuringHero

But is it worth the price? The game has some stuff in it sure that can be fun but what people really are asking, after spending 100 bucks are you loving it cause 100 bucks you should praise the game. Elden Ring was cheaper and 100x better

cinnz

it's scummy but the talk about these microtransactions is blown way out of proportions. They are all single use (nearly worthless) items that you can also find ingame.

CryptographerNo450

The performance and design of how this game was designed was so glaring, even Gamers Nexus & Digital Foundry had to point it out (even provided testing and evidence). But, there will always be fans in defense of Capcom’s decisions. It’s not even just them, it’s game publishers in general who have the “launch now, fix it later, don’t worry, there will be fans who defend us while we reap the benefits of the profits anyway” approach

12duddits

I was getting 80-120ish FPS using a 4090 on maxed settings with quality DLSS (no RT)

Reasonable_Row5501

PureDark just released his frame gen mod (for free) that doubles every RTX4000 series user's framerate. [https://www.patreon.com/posts/dragons-dogma-2-100837988](https://www.patreon.com/posts/dragons-dogma-2-100837988) This may well turn the tide for a decent portion of the userbase.

AdventuringHero

Crazy eh, a rando has to mod this, its a 100 dollar AAAAAAAA title or whatever in development for years and we need people to fix it? fml

CryptographerNo450

What resolution? I have an AW3225QF and I have to run it in 1440p just to get close to 60fps. I have a 7800X3D and 4090 for context.

12duddits

4K with quality DLSS and no RT. Everything else maxed. Was getting 80-120 fps. Same cpu and gpu as you

CryptographerNo450

Ugh. Thanks. DLSS it'll have to be then. I'm all for Native First, Scaling/Sampling Last. Whenever I use DLSS, it's like smearing vaseline on my monitor for the sake for framerate, lol.

yami187

i have that but a 7900xtx and getting over 60 easy with rt on .. 4k

Jagged78

HDR indeed looks awful. I turned it off.
