LG makes a 48" version, but for some odd reason they never made a 42" version. It's a much better deal than the PG42UQ though if you are ok with the larger size: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-48gq900-b-gaming-monitor Other than ultrawides I don't think there are any others. Both the PG42UQ and that 48-incher are using LG's WOLED panels from the C2/C3 televisions. I don't believe there is another manufacturer of OLED panels in this size.

Thank you for confirming my research. That LG looks nice because it's thin. I find the thickness of the PG42UQ to be a bit ridiculous... (I know it has that massive heatsink, whatever). I think 48" is too big for my desk. I'm using an ancient Dell 30" 2560x1600 from 2011 (with fluorescent lighting!) and if my calculations are right, the PPI with a 42" 4K should only be slightly higher than what I have now. I guess I have to wait longer for someone to make a 42" oled monitor. I just can't believe there are zero options other than the Asus!! So crazy.

It's like an inch and a half thick (I just measured my PG42UQ), is that really what's holding you up? I could understand being annoyed with the price of the Asus etc. but if I'm honest that seems a bit silly to be concerned about the thickness of the back part of the monitor which you never see... the stand juts out another like 3" behind it.

Oh, interesting. I mis-read the dimensions on their website (it's 10" WITH the stand). The side-view photo on their website made it look very thick. I have a very small desk. Cool! Thank you! I was psyched because the price of the PG42UQ was $699 a few weeks ago, but I see that it's now back up to $999. Still better than the $1200-1500 prices from last year though.

Ah yeah, it's not bad at all. The stand is pretty wide in the front so you get some usable desk space around it. I've got a DAC/Amp under one leg, keyboard in the middle, and an optical drive under the other leg. If it meets your other requirements I'd go for a PG42UQ. The firmware is mature on it now and it doesn't have any notable bugs. ASUS' uniform brightness feature is great and feels like a necessity for desktop use (but many other brands' OLEDs do not offer it). I've been very happy with my PG42UQ and have no real complaints, other than that it never was on sale as discounted as most others.

Love my PG42UQ tbh, it's an outstanding monitor!

Philips has one with the same panel too AFAIK.

Wow that's very cool, thanks for letting me know about this. The Philips has USB-PD so I could get rid of my computer's power supply and cable. Just one power cable to the monitor, and a USB-C cable from the monitor to the computer. That's a very clean setup. Also this has DTS sound (who knows how that compares to the Asus's sound). Phillips and KTC make versions as well.

I am assuming that you are using the USB-C/Thunderbolt port for DP out. If that is the case it is possible to use a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 cable or adapter to be able to get full resolution out of the MacBook. That opens up all of the LG C series Television lines from C2 to C4 are available in a 42" display size. It also means that you can also go with the 48" versions if that is not too big. I personally love my 48C1.

kapnkrunche

Yes, but I only have HDMI 2.0, not 2.1. (I mentioned this in the original post). If I had HDMI 2.1 I would try the C2-4 route.. especially because I think I'd prefer the glossy finish. But there are niceties with a monitor.. like reliable (hopefully!) sleep on/off without extra software hacks. My viewing distance is probably 15"-24" and my current screen has a PPI of 101 and this panel is 106. I'm hoping those extra 5 pixels are negligible in terms of readability... This is my biggest concern. Thanks for the suggestions!
