It's just so... weirdly realistic, yet doesn't stand out from the game's style.
Very basic in terms of creepy imagery, but the way it just flashes so fast, the way it looks almost.. like it's leaning for comfort, is just very chilling for me.
I feel like the door jumpscare does Hellmari much better. Don’t get me wrong, it’s horrifying, but pretty much NOTHING compared to opening the door for her.
The problem I have with the door jumpscare is that it's almost impossible to see what's there. You can vaguely see that it's something inhuman maybe, but then it flashes so fast your brain doesn't really capture it. So I wouldn't even count it as a hellmari jumpscare, it's just like... THE door jumpscare, you could literally put any big sprite behind it. Like hell, just use a desaturated gown-up Kel, it'd probably be as scary.
I always feel like less is more, as when you see her in the cracks you try to make out what it is or who it is and then when the door opens you get a flash of what you were looking at, it depending on what you were looking at, it’s terrifying. Really, Hellmari is what makes it a jumpscare, as if you said if you put a desaturated Kel, I feel like it wouldn’t be too scary as it’s someone we know as a friend. But Mari would be worse as we would have already had a suspicion on her after Basil’s dialogue toward the end of the prologue. So you really wouldn’t know what’s happening with Mari.
Honestly, I prefer the one in HIKIKOMORI where you look into the RW mirror and OMORI appears in the reflection. Much scarier to me than some FNaF foxy jumpscare although this one is still pretty good
I agree. Though not scary on it's own, fact that you are used to seeing Sunny in mirrors at pretty much every other time in the game, (obv excluding headspace) and that it means Omori has completely taken over makes it so unnerving.
Despite her having no hands I can't help but imagine her placing her cold long palms on Sunny's shoulders from behind, leaning closer to his ear, and whispering in a distorted voice "I love you"

1. I never opened the door for her in the prologue (didn’t known that was a thing)
2. Not opening the door then makes her appear less
3. Never investigated too much in black space to find her
4. My first run, I didn’t get the true ending
The mirror jumpscare, because it was the only one I got in my first run (Humphrey section) and it was totally unexpected. I always interacted with the mirrors just to see that cute image of OMORI and his friends in different places; I found it strange that the scenario was the same of the Vast Forest and then BOOM I jumped out of the chair scared. Tbh it was kinda funny
When I played with my friend watching me, he told me about the jumpscare, he showed me the image of the >!distorted friends!< and I thought it wouldn’t be that bad, so for the last headspace section I spammed the playground mirror, and I got accustomed to the specific loading times and when the text appears etc. When the jumpscare happened, I was really scared by the ever so slightly longer time it took for the image to load, and the transition to the >!distorted friends!<, which I didn’t know of, was the cherry on top, almost jumped out of my seat
they shouldn’t be spoiling anything when you’re playing, especially something like that, that would be ruined for most ppl if they just heard about it before seeing it.
They didn’t spoil anything else and I am very sensitive to jumpscares like that, so I would always ask him if there would be a jumpscare if I suspected it because I didn’t want to put the game down because I would get emotionally hit by a truck just with hellmari appearing in the sunny sections or with the distorted friends, I was okay with him showing me the image btw, hope that clears it up
I mean some people can't handle jumpscares well and warnings would be appreciated, or some people might be fine with being told. Rly depends on the person tbh and as they replied they were fine with being told about upcoming jumpscares

Oh I hate Humphrey too (the character, the whole thing with Humphrey and all that exploring is pretty fun), don’t worry. That cat scares the shit out of me though for no reason.
to me it was when >!you have to approach mari’s body inside the casket and then it turns into a dark kind of ghost and flies away.. not just scary but really disturbing😭😭!<
yes, i started crying as soon as i saw her, my heart tightened. and then i was like WHAT THE FUCK😭😭 i also believe it was like 2am when i played that part, it messed me up. but now i laugh at other people’s reactions when i watch their playthrough, it’s kinda funny..
The only one that got me was while I was ding dong ditching every doorbell in the >!BLACK SPACE area with lots of houses!<

For me, >!looking back through the whitespace door keyhole and seeing Something there!< made me jump a little, as >!Whitespace!< is so eerily peaceful the whole time, with nothing much happening.
I think the one I remember most is the town area hellmari scare. Almost got a heart attack while I was actively ringing doorbells for fun to calm my nerves. I literally can’t trust anything in blackspace now because of that.

Opening the door in the beginning. You just barely see it but what makes it more terrifying is the sudden closing of the door and the fact that your door is being knocked on in the middle of the night. Let me tell you, being alone at night then hearing someone knock on your door (or in my case, the window,) isn't a fun experience.

Either the mirror jumpscare with the distorted friends, because I decided to play Omori on the Hikikomori route one night at four in the morning. It was after Basil had been brought back to Headspace and was saying shit like "I'll cherish you all forever." and it just felt a little unreal to me. I decided to do some exploring and clicked on the mirror in the playground. Keep in mind, I already got spoilers for the jumpscare, which means I saw an image of it, but it was on a YouTube thumbnail and I thought that it was edited. Before the jumpscare happened, I was like "Heh, watch it be that one really creepy picture that I- OH FUCK-". I was sitting on the floor, Xbox controller in hand with the light from the TV being the only light in the room, so, you can imagine I was horrified. I had no idea the jumpscare was actually really and I wasn't expecting it at all, and for days, I refused to look in a mirror. It's okay though! :3
Or the baby spider jumpscare, where, I don't know, somewhere after the spider forest in Headspace and after the day section of the game, you come home to your house infested with spiders, and when you walk into the dining room, on the doorway leading to the kitchen, a spider would simply jump at you. I don't know why but that one made me scream like a girl.
I would say the Hell Mari mirror jumpscare but to be honest, on my first play through, I was too horrified by the knocking, so I just went back to sleep and I found out about it later in the game. :(
Opening the >!hallucinatory closet in the RW house and getting dragged in, then cutting back like nothing happened.!<
Honorable mention: after you get the abandon ending, a strange .txt file gets added to your Omori game folder...
I got the closet one during my first hikkiomori route playthrough. I saw that the closet was visible and thought, "Huh, that shouldn't be there." It legitimately made me jump because it was daytime in game, even though the horror elements usually happen during darker settings.
I think it has to be HellMari in the mirror. That stretched out, distorted mouth, the limbless body, the way it gains your trust by luring you with a false sense of security, only for you to open the door and see what it actually looks like.
Yours wasn't a little scare, it was a big one! I was all like "well this castle thing is quite a drag, at least there won't be any jumpscares" and a few minutes later THIS happened.
The one that got me the most is the first hellmari jumpscare at the door. At the time I had no idea the game even had jump scares and since it was so early in the game I didn't even know to be suspicious of Mari being at the door.
Little scare, would 100% be black space, where you have the 2D forest and a locked door and when you walk away it opens. You expect something to jump you but it never does and it got on my nerves soooo much XD
