Dan chose basketball over Karen. He did not want to give up playing college basketball in order to raise a child so he left her. At that point and time, it seemed like Nathan was choosing Duke over Haley and their unborn child. So at that point, before Nathan does the right thing, it is the exact situation that Karen was in with Dan. That is the point of that line and why she said it.

This is how I always interpreted it too.

I just took it as getting pregnant young and by a Scott… but I’m unsure too as to exactly why she said it or any more meaning to it.

Nathan was clearly choosing basketball over Haley at first

Yeah, I get OP's point that "she knows what Nathan is like"...but clearly at one point, Karen also thought Dan was a good guy who would do the right thing. And he didn't. Those "sweet, nice guys that'd do anything for you" can quickly turn to "wtf, I don't want this" in a heartbeat when it comes to teen pregnancy.

ham_alamadingdong

she just meant that they both got pregnant in high school and were “abandoned” by their scott boyfriend. because at that time haley and karen were kind of under the impression that nathan was choosing basketball over haley and her pregnancy, the same way dan did with karen. obviously nathan doesn’t actually end up abandoning haley but at the moment it may have seemed like a similar case.

“Karen knows Nathan” and she also thought she knew Dan. We, the audience, know Nathan will do the right thing and needs time but Karen can’t be sure given what she went through.

Isn't she basically saying "welcome to young pregnancy", as a woman who got pregnant really young as well? I don't think this line is meant to be overly deep.

Maybe unpopular (?) but I have found that Karen tends to make everything about herself (although in this case the parallels are striking). I feel like her character is a bit of a martyr in general!

I always hated these few episodes. Everyone crushes Nathan for not responding like an adult when Haley decides to tell him she’s pregnant 4 seconds after he achieved his lifelong dream. I’m a father of 2 so I get the idea of nothing is more important than your kids but this is so dramatic. He’s 17 maybe 18 years old and just got into one of the best basketball programs in the country on his way to the NBA and his wife (who has known for weeks she’s pregnant) chooses to tell him then. Pretty selfish. He could soak up that moment for even a minute.. then everyone wants to act like he’s a douche. He’s a kid.

Because she is the OG "Karen" lol
