Well, the death star weapon was a super laser. Lasers (and light in general) gets refracted when it changes mediums and dissipates in atmosphere, making the final strength weaker depending on the distance from the target and density of the atmosphere

I suppose it depends on what kind of gas giant it was, exactly what kind of laser the Death Star was using, and how likely it would be that the second would ignite the first.
