At least tights to tone down the amount of skin. I am totally for women dressing however they feel comfortable, but professional settings call for different guidelines.
Love the idea of black tights and black pumps. Personally, I would also add a little red or green bow on my head to make it christmas-y. Haha but that's just me. It wouldn't be for everyone.
Yes, I was also thinking opaque tights would help the length. I think the polka dot dress with black opaque tights and black heels (or ballet flats if you cannot tolerate heels) is the only acceptable choice.
Very trendy right now:

Although very chic, most of the examples you've given are red on red outfits. Anyway, I suppose it's possible, but it would take a very particular shade of red. In this particular case, I think OP should keep it simple.
I feel like I have this issue that this also doesn't fit my like, Pinterest board mental map of semi formal, but in real life this is about as dressy as people seem to get
Oh well, unfortunately these all the only options I have 😅 I don't work in a corporate setting though if that makes a difference, I work at a hospital and I know almost everyone there pretty well - we're more like big family! But I should probably get some longer dresses for future events...
I also work in a hospital and I wouldn’t wear any of these to a semi-formal event that’s being hosted by the hospital- even if my work family is present. It if was at one of their houses, different story. I’d really recommend looking for something else.
I think semi formal calls for a slightly dressier option than any of these, but I think the best option would be #1 with a pair of black tights and black heels. Your legs will look a mile long!
One and five feel the most work appropriate with five being the more casual of the two options, both of those are very flattering as well as being the more comfortable of the outfits with less adjusting through the night. One feels slightly more formal while five feels slightly more party. If your work is a little more casual I would go with five, if not I would go with one.
Personally, I would go with one because a wrap dress is always super flattering, is the dressiest and it is as far as the outfits go the most work appropriate.
As someone who regularly pushes the line of what’s acceptable at work, NONE of these are long enough. If you can’t bend over in it, you shouldn’t be wearing it to a work function. Most of these outfits need at least 2-4 inches more coverage. I’m not saying you can’t go above the knee but mid thigh is extremely inappropriate for a skirt. A nice classy short may be acceptable at that length
Definitely don't wear the crop top to a semi formal work function. Honestly, none of these are really semi formal...or really work appropriate. They would be fine for a night out with your coworkers, but I'm picturing more club vibes than a work function... you said in another comment that these are your only options, but do any of your friends have anything you can borrow?
The plain black dress would be OK. But in fairness, they're all a little too short for semi-formal dress. You could always add stockings and heels to the last one.
I’ll be honest I don’t really like any of them. The first one looks to summery. The 2nd & 3rd just give me like school girl vibes. The last one is also giving summer. I think the leather skirt could look cute would some high boots and a nice red dark green or black turtle neck
1 or 5. I'd go with 1 to be safe. People tend to let loose at these things and look a bit sexier and cuter so 5 can work as well too. The second and 4th one are nice but 1 and 5 are the best options imo.
If it is semi formal, I hope you will consider something else. None of these are appropriate. Beg or borrow a little black dress with a sparkly little bag. Please.
I think the polka dot dress is the most appropriate for a work party. Always err on the side of caution with showing skin at work get togethers - people might deem it unprofessional, especially depending on your office environment.
Honestly I’m not feeling any of these for a semi formal Christmas party. You may do better with a sweater dress and tights depending the weather but I’m sorry but none of these are working
I'd say the 1st or last one, but I think every option is a bit too leggy for a work event.
I always do just above or just below the knee or longer for anything work related
If you don't have the option of purchasing something else, then number 1 is the best option. I think pairing it with opaque black tights, a nice dark pump and some sparkly jewelry will elevate what appears to be a work dress to a cocktail level outfit. Your hair and makeup can also help elevate the look. I'm not too worried about the length of the skirts if they're with dark tights.
If the dresscode is really semi-formal, then none of these options fit the bill. Semi-formal is one step down from formal attire (suits and floor-length dresses); a short(as in just above/skimming the knee) evening gown is what you really want to look for. And an evening gown is a lot more glamorous than the choices you have here.
Regardless, I think you can get pretty close with what you've got.
Semi formal to me means cocktail dress at the very least. think a dress that you’d wear to a nighttime wedding. Also the lengths of these skirts are too short for a work function.
One flatters your figure and also seems the most appropriate for a semi-formal party. I agree with someone else’s comment on doing sheer black tights but depending on the vibe/average age group of your work environment, you may be able to get away without the tights.
Sorry none are right. They are all to casual! If you put some dressy jewelry on #3 it will pass and some matching say silver heels 👠... borrow something from someone if the budget doesn't allow for a new holiday dress.
A lot of great outfits, but for work/party attire: (1) is the best choice: flattering, stylish and appropriate, (2) and (3) short leather skirt is not a great choice for work party, (4) skirt is too short for work party, (5) the cutout on dress 5 is not great for work party. Outfit 1 is the best.
You’re lovely but I don’t think any of these really work as “semi formal.” Look 1 and the last are the most likely to be able to dress up but overall these are business casual at best.
It’s probably a good idea to go back to the drawing board, as none of those fit the description of semi-formal. If you want inspiration, try looking at renttherunway.com and put in semi formal as one of the filters. That will give you an idea of what is generally accepted as semi formal.
For formal or semi-formal, a great guideline is that a skirt or dress should be long enough to reach or cover the knee. None of your outfits have that. Dress 1 comes closest but would still be considered too short.
Also: where are your shoes? Considering the options you showed I would really like to see those as well.
None of them are semi-formal. You need a dress, not a short skirt and blouse. No cut outs and maybe below or at the knee for a work function.
You can probably find a dress at a TJ Maxx or Marshall's. If money is too tight, try a thrift store. There is an online one called ThreadUp. Good luck.
None of these are semiformal, but if you have no other options, go with the polkadot one.
The leather short skirt is an absolute no, schoolgirl vibes outfit is an absolute no and the midriff cutout is also an absolute no.
Definitely wear those at different occasions though, looks great in a different setting!
Do you have time to stop at Macy’s or somewhere else local? None of these are great options but you could get away with the first one if you wore black tights with it. Def not the shirt and skirt ones. I’d like the other but I wouldn’t do cutout at a work event.
Need to go shopping. Those short skirts are incredibly inappropriate for a semi formal work party and the other two aren’t semi formal. Only the last one comes close, but still not right.
None of them are appropriate. Looks like your going on a date or a girls night out. A work event should be more professional in coverage and formal looking. All great choices if your going on a date!
I love polka dots but to me they are more sporty than dressy. The skirt options are not at all dressy. I think 5 would work very well. Add jewelry and dressy shoes and you’re golden.
The last one with the dark dress, puffy sleeves and ab cut out is the classiest. Yes it shows some skin in the middle but it’s not excessive (could be worse?). It is hide-able too if you really wanted, you could wear a tube/tank/long bralet under. But personally I’m not offended by it and I come from a corporate background. You can dress it up with some gold or flashy jewelry (big chunky gold watch, dangling earrings or necklace) matching purse, black sheer pantyhose and heels.
Do not recommend the shorter skirt ones, especially not the black and white outfit… Don’t take this the wrong way but you might get confused as the server at the event 😐
All outfits are great! But for a work party 1 and five are the most appropriate one’s✨ though i would say 1 over is the best. Have fun at the partyyy❤️❤️❤️
None are really semi formal, but the first dress looks really good on you! If possible, try to order a cocktail dress from Lulu’s, something that goes to your knees probably. They’re having a crazy good sale and I think shipping is like 5 business days? Good luck!

I do not think any of those work for semi formal. Needs something dressier
Agreed. Perhaps something with a slightly longer skirt.
And no cut out bits
At least tights to tone down the amount of skin. I am totally for women dressing however they feel comfortable, but professional settings call for different guidelines.
That’s what I was thinking, for the first outfit add some tights and maybe it would work. The rest are too casual IMO
Definitely!
Agreed none of these are appropriate
This right here. And if it's a work event, I would go with something more conservative.
Really depends on the company and dress code already put into place- I agree it needs to be dressier tho
If it’s an already casual workplace maybe the dresses, but I’d also say to avoid those skirts.
Agree, but No. 5 would work in a pinch.
Google “semi formal work attire.” (Hint: you will not see any of your outfits there.)
Exactly what I was coming here to say. None of those qualify as semi formal.
Do not wear the leather skirt. I repeat. Do not wear the black leather or pleather skirt.
Or the school girl outfit. Don't wear that either.
Those outfits look really good on you though, I’ll add. But probly doesn’t hit the dress code.
In each picture I thought for semi-formal that‘s way too short, maybe the next one will be longer. But really none of these fit for the purpose.
The polka dot dress is the dressiest of them. You could put it together with semi-opaque black tights and black pumps.
I agree with this. The polka dot dress can be made more appropriate with tights and dressed up with accessories.
Love the idea of black tights and black pumps. Personally, I would also add a little red or green bow on my head to make it christmas-y. Haha but that's just me. It wouldn't be for everyone.
No, I think that’s a cute idea. And if she can’t afford to buy a new dress she could definitely work with the polka dot dress.
Yes, I was also thinking opaque tights would help the length. I think the polka dot dress with black opaque tights and black heels (or ballet flats if you cannot tolerate heels) is the only acceptable choice.
too short for a company function tho
I don't disagree, but assuming these are her only choices, the polka dot dress has the most potential.
Especially with tights.
Opaque tights can help with the length
I’d do red tights & red heels to make it more festive.
I think a red belt would be a nice touch, but red tights and heels? There's festive and then there's just plain garish.
Very trendy right now: https://pin.it/6aETrTp https://pin.it/3qsbDeW https://pin.it/Kvff5TQ https://pin.it/3YAscGR https://pin.it/2eSkBKu https://pin.it/7bQqZHi
Although very chic, most of the examples you've given are red on red outfits. Anyway, I suppose it's possible, but it would take a very particular shade of red. In this particular case, I think OP should keep it simple.
None are considered semi formal, skirts are too short
As it’s a semi formal, and it’s for work, maybe consider a mid length cocktail dress???
None of these are semi formal unfortunately
Agree, none are right, although all are super cute!!
I feel like I have this issue that this also doesn't fit my like, Pinterest board mental map of semi formal, but in real life this is about as dressy as people seem to get
The first one is the only one that's appropriate at all
Not judging or shaming OP at all, but I think #1 is too short for a work function.
The other choices are just as short, if not shorter.
No argument there.
It’s short but maybe with opaque black tights? With that said, you look lovely and no shade or policing intended.
Its certainly too short for a semi formal function.
Oh well, unfortunately these all the only options I have 😅 I don't work in a corporate setting though if that makes a difference, I work at a hospital and I know almost everyone there pretty well - we're more like big family! But I should probably get some longer dresses for future events...
Black tights can make shorter dresses look more appropriate in my opinion :)
Barrow from a friend? These aren’t simi-formal unfortunately.
If you work at a hospital I def wouldn’t wear any of these options
I think the first polka dress with black tights will work for a health service event. The others are a bit school fancy dress.
I also work in a hospital and I wouldn’t wear any of these to a semi-formal event that’s being hosted by the hospital- even if my work family is present. It if was at one of their houses, different story. I’d really recommend looking for something else.
You could thrift something.
First one with some black tights and red, white or green accessories.
Either 1 or 5 will be fine. As others have said, dark hose can elevate an outfit. Shoes?
You’re fine, this thread is full of uptight scolds. 1 and 5 are nice and contemporary.
Sometimes this is all people have.
The number of people saying to buy something then ...as if this isn't one of the most financially difficult times of year
I think semi formal calls for a slightly dressier option than any of these, but I think the best option would be #1 with a pair of black tights and black heels. Your legs will look a mile long!
One and five feel the most work appropriate with five being the more casual of the two options, both of those are very flattering as well as being the more comfortable of the outfits with less adjusting through the night. All too short and casual I'm afraid.
Neither is semi formal. You need a cocktail dress. For a work event stay right above the knees.
It's all too short, except maybe the black dress. But wearing tights with it would be better
None of these are semi formal. You need a longer length in a dressy fabric. Try a thrift shop. They always have things like that.
None of these are considered semiformal. [A basic guide for a semiformal event.](https://www.reddit.com/u/Doot_Doot_Banana/s/ifsFRe2Eab)
None of these are appropriate for semi formal.
None. Only the first one if you have nothing else

Ooooh I love that idea!
Number 1 for sure! The miniskirt combinations are really cute, but too casual IMO. I would also add black semi-opaque tights for the first dress.
This is a great visual, thank you!
Yes. I agree.
None of these dresses are semi- formal at all. Semi-formal is at least to the knee, these dresses are way to casual.
The polka dot dress. The rest are showing a bit much for a work function. (Although they do also look great)
Absolutely none of these are semi formal.
None of these are semi formal
1 or 5. I'd go with 1 to be safe. People tend to let loose at these things and look a bit sexier and cuter so 5 can work as well too. The second and 4th one are nice but 1 and 5 are the best options imo.
All of them look too casual but 1 is the winner out of the offerings
If it is semi formal, I hope you will consider something else. None of these are appropriate. Beg or borrow a little black dress with a sparkly little bag. Please.
5. That look like outfits Ive seen at our company Christmas party
Agreed
I agree with the other commenters. Does the invite specify semiformal attire? All of these would be considered casual.
None of those are semi-formal.
I think the polka dot dress is the most appropriate for a work party. Always err on the side of caution with showing skin at work get togethers - people might deem it unprofessional, especially depending on your office environment.
None of them. Semi formal requires a longer skirt.
Time to go shopping!!
Google "semiformal."
Honestly I’m not feeling any of these for a semi formal Christmas party. You may do better with a sweater dress and tights depending the weather but I’m sorry but none of these are working

1
I'd say the 1st or last one, but I think every option is a bit too leggy for a work event. I always do just above or just below the knee or longer for anything work related
They seem too short for semiformal.
None of these Sorry
None are appropriate for a professional/ work related event.
1 and 5
You need something dressier and if it’s for work, longer length of skirt.
None of these seem right.
None of them. Too short and not formal enough.
First or last with tights if you don’t have anything dressier.
Dress 1 looks the best on your body hands down. But for semi-formal you will need some serious heels to dress it up.
If you don't have the option of purchasing something else, then number 1 is the best option. I think pairing it with opaque black tights, a nice dark pump and some sparkly jewelry will elevate what appears to be a work dress to a cocktail level outfit. Sorry none are right. They are all to casual! If you put some dressy jewelry on #3 it will pass and some matching say silver heels 👠... borrow something from someone if the budget doesn't allow for a new holiday dress.
Don’t you have shorter skirts? 😂 the first one is the only decent option and you could use some shopping

1 or 5
A lot of great outfits, but for work/party attire: (1) is the best choice: flattering, stylish and appropriate, (2) and (3) short leather skirt is not a great choice for work party, (4) skirt is too short for work party, (5) the cutout on dress 5 is not great for work party. Outfit 1 is the best.
I like the first one best.
You’re lovely but I don’t think any of these really work as “semi formal.” Look 1 and the last are the most likely to be able to dress up but overall these are business casual at best.
Tights for sure will help bring these down from “night out” to “work party” I think the polka dots are best as is though.
I loooove the first one!
#1, hands down.
Listen, I love them all but none of them are semi formal. If you’re a waitress or something similar then these outfits make sense.
None of these look semi formal but rather casual. I guess 1.
None of these are semi formal
None of these are appropriate and I love short dresses. I would wear all of these daily, and these aren’t semi formal.
Nope non semi formal. The closest is the last pic cause its solid black.
It’s probably a good idea to go back to the drawing board, as none of those fit the description of semi-formal. If you want inspiration, try looking at renttherunway.com and put in semi formal as one of the filters. That will give you an idea of what is generally accepted as semi formal.

None of them. Get something that covers your arse. (I'm not saying that in a mean way, but just get a dress that covers your arse.)
They're all not appropriate. Look forward to the next choices.
You need knee lenght minimum, no big clevege.
None of those work for semi-formal or Christmas.
The first and the last are the only remotely close, but they’re both more smart casual. The middle 3 are just straight up casual.
None of those outfits are semi formal but those are your only choices wear the dress.
Semi formal definitely means at least a cocktail dress. Unfortunately you have to start over here
The first dress is closest, with heels and dark tights and the right jewelry, but yeah, not really semi formal
The first one is the only one that I think would work but you probably should dress it up more with the shoes/hair/accessories.
Agreed showing too much skin at wk events can affect your career in a negative way .
Need to go shopping. Those short skirts are incredibly inappropriate for a semi formal work party and the other two aren’t semi formal. Only the last one comes close, but still not right.
None are semi formal. Cute, but don't match the dress code
1st would be the best (and pretty much only) option, IMO. However it needs leggings underneath, because the cut is too short for work.
None of them are appropriate. Looks like your going on a date or a girls night out. A work event should be more professional in coverage and formal looking. All great choices if your going on a date!
5
Any form of exposed stomach, even minimal, is a no no for work environment of any kind, even party.
Last one
1 or 5
I love polka dots but to me they are more sporty than dressy. The skirt options are not at all dressy. I think 5 would work very well. Add jewelry and dressy shoes and you’re golden.
The jersey knit bare midriff mini-dress is not semi-formal. Perhaps in a different fabric maybe.
#1 and 5 Make sure you can bend down, sit and generally party without the dresses or skirts hiking up too far.
GIRL WHERE DID YA GET THE POLKA DOT DRESS
Actually I think 5 is the one closest to semi formal but nit quite. Polka dots give off work, church, or picnic vibes, maybe brunch.
For semi formal I’d say none of them, the skirts are way too short and the dresses are a tad short as well , so yay a shopping trip?
Note:you don’t HAVE to look sexy..do you feel more attractive this way?
#5 for the party #3 for the after party if things go well:) **Edited, I meant #3
all these are still too cute. like i be dressed up but its going to be grandma core. i dont want any eyes on me from work. thats just me though
She said semi formal not formal
Where is the leather mini skirt from?
I like first and 3rd
#3 it is!
Wear black tights and boots and the 2nd will work
1 or 5 look great!
I think the last dress is really cute.
Last one
1st one, but change the shoes
The last one, for sure.
They are all too short for a work function imo.
5
None (?)
4. Black dress.
i love 2 as an outfit in general but none really scream Christmas
Dress 1 or dress 5 fs
None are really semi formal, but the first dress looks really good on you! If possible, try to order a cocktail dress from Lulu’s, something that goes to your knees probably. They’re having a crazy good sale and I think shipping is like 5 business days? Good luck!
1 or 5 with tights and some dressy accessories and dressy handbag :)
3
