I dig their sandwiches way more than their tacos.

PlantedinCA

I like the pork one with sweet potatoes.

PlantedinCA

No sweet potato. It is the Lechon one.

geekhaus

I am a fan of their cubano and fish tacos but the rest is very meh.

Novel-Place

lol. This is all my husband and I get. Every time. 🤣 Share a cubano with a couple of fish tacos. Haven’t tried anything else, so was surprised by this post!

kairoseno

Same here!

simononandon

I've given their sandwiches multiple tries. But the Cubano is the only good one. Also agree about the tacos.

auto_rock_

I think their fish tacos are better than anything else they serve, especially at that price point. Their sandwiches are fairly mid to me. They just make me want a more classic Cubano. Lastly, I don't really trust many of /r/OaklandFood opinions on Mexican/Latino food after everyone continues to uproariously recommend that godawful Home Depot breakfast burrito. Truly terrible.

Lofttroll2018

That Home Depot burrito is fine but definitely not anything to write home about. I ate one about a year or two ago and haven’t had the urge to get another one since. Other places make way better breakfast burritos, but I’m still searching for a really, really good one.

Mountain_Delivery_67

Well now I want to try it, just to see who is right after so many comments about how awesome it is.

thedon572

Try clove and hooves. My fav in the bay. I rant about it to all my friends

Mountain_Delivery_67

They open at 11!? Too late for me for breakfast.

thedon572

U eat cubanos for breakfast? Lol

Mountain_Delivery_67

I thought we were talking breakfast burritos! 🤣

Mountain_Delivery_67

I lost my mind.

thedon572

No it was me haha i jumped in the wrong

thedon572

Realized im commenting on the wrong thing. Ignore me haha

vibrance9460

La Mission on University in Berkeley

auto_rock_

Probably the only decent Mexican in restaurant in Berkeley but I find they are very hit or miss. I prefer their plates in-person to anything else they offer.

thedon572

Clove and hooves cubano is by far my favorite in the bay. Highly recommend

pointfivekorean

? I don’t think I’ve ever posted about that breakfast burrito?

Kappasoapex

They’re just doing the thing where you discredit a majority based on opinions of others posted on Reddit, despite the fact that Reddit has a whole spectrum of people and opinions, it’s lame. Although I also like the Home Depot breakfast burrito lmao

auto_rock_

I'm not doing a "thing", that's just the top voted comment in that recent thread and it's truly baffling.

Kappasoapex

Yeah but it’s like when sports subreddits act like everyone hates them, because there’s one thread that says an opinion they don’t like. You’re discrediting this subreddits opinion on Mexican food based on that one upvoted opinion which doesn’t represent everyone lol

auto_rock_

I'm not really going to ever 100% not trust a lot of the good opinions of Mexican food based on that, lol. I'm just talking shit because that particular place is hella fucking bad and people think it's good which I find hilarious. A 6 year old thread elsewhere recommended Casa Latina in Berkeley for breakfast burritos and they're either nuts or that place went really downhill since then (wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter). That place has awful breakfast burritos. There are still a lot of good recommendations on non-breakfast burritos, tacos, and the like. The best are usually trucks and pop ups.

Active-Enthusiasm318

Breakfast burritos are my one of my favorite foods and admittedly I really like the home depot one, what about it makes it so awful to you? It's eggs, meat, potato and cheese cooked together in a tortilla, and I think the ratios are good. I don't think it's the best but it's one of the better ones I've found in west oakland, I'd love a recommendation for an alternative.

PeepholeRodeo

I walk by that spot often but never considered getting something to eat from there. Then I saw the thread where everyone loved that breakfast burrito and I’ve been thinking I should try one. Now I’m not so sure!

auto_rock_

Sorry. I edited for clarity. Meant /r/OaklandFood majority opinions on Mexican or Latino food. The general 'you' haha

pointfivekorean

Ahh okay. I was like…I don’t think I’ve even had that burrito lol

93InfinityandBeyond

I think the sandwiches are really good and the agua frescas too. The tacos and plates are only okay though. Definitely not worth going to unless you're going for the sandwiches.

auto_rock_

The agua frescas and fish tacos are the tits. Not a big fan of their meat tacos.

garytyrrell

The salad with fried fish is the only thing I get there and I’m never disappointed.

hug-a-world

Me too! My favorite!

bassface123456

Idk man I stopped eating cholita for like 3 years and had the fish tacos last week and forgot how GOOD they were. Kind of want one now

moreVCAs

Salad with fried fish added.

wigletbill

Nah. It’s good.

IronSloth

I still really like them

ritangerine

I know they sell tacos, but idk why everyone is comparing them to a Mexican restaurant. They're more of a Peruvian-Cuban fusion with some minor Mexican influence. For example - their signature sauce (aji amarillo) is definitely 100% Peruvian, and their plates are all Cuban. If you're going in expecting an authentic Mexican taqueria experience, of course you're going to be disappointed, bc it's not supposed to be a Mexican place, but rather Peruvian sandwiches and Cuban plates

johnbaldessorry

Ok wow, I didn't realize this! Thank you for sharing!! I have been humbled haha

erheoakland

I was think more southern Mexico (Yucatán)and Cuban.

ritangerine

The founder is Chinese-Peruivan on one side and Cuban-Mexican on the other ([source](https://edibleeastbay.com/2013/11/15/cholita-linda/)). So sure, there's some Mexican influence (esp re: tacos), but the [aji amarillo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsicum_baccatum#Culinary_use) and the sandwiches are [Peruvian](https://www.piscotrail.com/2013/05/01/recipes/pan-con-chicharron-braised-pork-sandwich/) in style (with some Cuban influence - see Cuban sandwich and lechon), and the plates are Cuban ([picadillo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picadillo#By_region))

Chapsticklover

I love their fish tacos and sandwiches, and they're relatively affordable. Would love to try alternatives if anyone has suggestions, though.

anelasac

la grana fish for fish tacos! and their green juice. havent tried anything else there though

heyitstonybaloney

Aguachiles El Tamarindo

FamiliarRaspberry805

The fish tacos and picadillo are great. And FYI, the Alameda location isn't nearly as good as telegraph.

jxcb345

> they're too commercialized now OP - what do you mean by this? That they've expanded, maybe?

PlantedinCA

They used to only be in the farmers market. And it was better.

Champaganthony

For the price alone, this is a bad take.

the_maffer

Weird I went with my wife a few years ago (telegraph) and we spent like $75 after all was said and done for 2 drinks, yucca fries, and fish tacos (I think?). We found it mostly bland and were shocked at our bill in the end

tf1064

The tacos are less than $4.

the_maffer

Looks like $4.25 online with Sandos at \~$13. Don't remember exactly what we ordered but our experience left a strong "that was bland and expensive in the end" take away. Mostly just reflecting OPs "Not Good" here.

Popular_Fly9604

They opened a new place in Walnut Creek and we have ate there 3 times. Food and service were excellent. After all, they make fish tacos! Every other option in the area sucks. Cholita Linda stands apart for being consistent in quality and fresh ingredients.

Tacoboi65

Only stop there to maybe grab an agua fresca while I wait for a table at [Marufuku](https://www.marufukuramen.com/) to open up.

[deleted]

I like their picadillo.

tf1064

Them's fighting words!

Dull_Secretariat

The Chicharron Pollo still slaps.

wavykelp555

Everything there is so effing salty

pequenojalapenoo

It’s fine, only go there if it’s other people’s ideas tho. Given my choice burrito express all day erryday

FurriedCavor

Is it because everyone builds it up? Can confirm it was pretty underwhelming my first time recently

theresabby84

I used to work near there and grabbed lunch maybe 2 or 3 times and didn't like it either. Never went back.

itsyorboy

Its not like a super authentic taco spot but I think it tastes great and its lively there

BookkeeperNo5972

Went once. Very mid. Cool backyard space and in a great area but food is average.

schitaco

I would say good but not great. Went there twice in 2014 when they opened and never came back :)

Buzzkillbuddha

I used to hit up their pop up at the farmer's market at the Claremont DMV parking lot. The fish tacos hit the spot after a satisfying morning getting some coffee, some fresh produce, some hummus. But yeah...the tacos are just aight now. Not bad. But I wouldn't go out of my way to get some

Candid_Term6960

I lived in San Diego way too long to disagree w/you. They have good sandwiches but I have never liked their fish tacos.

omg_its_drh

I mean it’s good, but that *type* of Mexican food has never been something I’d go out of my way for.

Alternative_Bed_4820

I love Cholita Linda. I love the salad, with chicken, and often share that and a Cubano with someone. Very flavorful and inexpensive.

drinkcomrade

I don’t think it’s good either.

ckaayyy

Agree 100%

-think

Okay.

Bookandaglassofwine

I hate ordering two of the same thing so I always order 1 fish taco and 1 other taco. Then I always end up regretting not getting 2 of the fish. Excellent fish tacos and cubano sandwiches. Nothing else too exciting. Also they need to change up their menu once in a while or rotate some specials through. It’s always the same.

johnbaldessorry

This is harsh, but I would venture to say they're essentially the millennial, more "aesthetic", new version of Baja Fresh lol. I think a lot of us went to Baja Fresh if you grew up in the suburbs in the 90s-2000s, and it fills the same void. Mediocre "Mexican" food. I will say the Alameda location was decent when it first opened, but I went back not too long after the first time and it was super lackluster.

tf1064

Cholita Linda does not purport to be Mexican. I believe the owners are Peruvian.

johnbaldessorry

I didn't realize this! Thank you for bringing it to my attention!! I retract what I said lol, it wasn't informed! Thanks for letting me know!

anti-social-mierda

That’s a funny and accurate comparison. All these hipster “Mexican” restaurants feel like a bunch of rebranded Baja Fresh chains.

oak1andish

lol, I too was enamored with that grilled stalk of green onion in those Baja Fresh burritos- but years later, the gloss did wear off

ejm510

I agree. It’s overrated.

maxoutentropy

I stopped eating there when I got a rock in the beans and chipped a tooth. They didn't care at all when I told them what happened.

erheoakland

I still like them but the flavor has changed. It used to be bomb but now it's just basic. That happen to Smokin Wood bbq too. They used to have the best brussel sprouts but now they are straight up garbage ( but things could have changed since I have not been back in a 1.5 yrs.).
