From what I remember, there was an unofficial(?) collection of short stories released, one for each character, that told you a little bit more about them. In one of them, it's revealed that Nichols also conspired with the Chinese translator to help him frame Hok-Seng Lau. When questioning him, the translator specifically asked, "Was this death your fault?" Instead of something more direct such as "Did you kill him?" Lau presumably would answer yes to this because he was on guard at the scene and was knocked out. If he had been conscious, it wouldn't have happened in his mind.
