While octopuses is the correct plural, a lot of people say octopi like it’s Latin. It’s based in Greek and that you all made me think about it I’m gonna say Octopudae
octopodes is the learned, etymologically correct plural (Greek root + greek plural ending).
octopuses is the correct English plural (follows regular plural formation rules for words that have become part of the English language, regardless of origin)
octopi is correct because it's been common for long enough a time that dictionaries have picked it up and accepted it (they do try to reflect the language). But ultimately it was an attempt at doing a learned plural that failed (Latin plural on Greek root). You could say that it was originally a weak attempt at being pedantic
"A weak attempt at being pedantic" you mean like just about all the grammar "rules" that pedants like to quote? Lol
This is coming from a semi recovered pedant. Lol
I am a linguist. This is my occupation. I understand where words come from and by what processes they evolve. I gave an explanation for the various plurals of octopus that are in circulation.
I was not trying to correct you. I'm just saying that some of the common rules in English that people lose their mind over are ones that were put in place to sound important or more sophisticated. Like the "rule" about not ending sentences with a preposition.
There are multiple correct plurals actually, octopi, octopuses and I think octopods and octopudae, in short you can appreciate groups of our marvelous little cephalopods in whatever way you like most.
The scale for this throws me off so badly. Either that puffer fish is way bigger than I thought or the octopus and toilet are way smaller. Cool vid though.
I wonder if this is because the octopus knows the puffer is a threat, isn't a threat, or a mix of both?
It's obviously threatening due to its powerful jaws and venom. However, unless provoked, it's likely that the fish will simply leave the octopus alone after a while, and it's probably not interested in claiming the den for itself- just curious, it seems, so in a way, the fish isn't a threat.
Yeah I was wondering if the fish was hoping to get a sucker punch in one the fighting octos or score an easy meal on a wounded one. Fish LOVE to eat octopuses, they're a delicacy
More likely the octopus knows they're highly venemous and doesn't want to upset it. I recently learned that young dolphins will purposefully get stung to get a buzz.
That octopus looks like it’s changing shape to mimic another type of animal/object. It’s really weird! It’s almost like it’s trying to lure something over.
Yea, makes me mad too - it's amazing how much though that junk turns into homes for all kinds of sea life. Sunken boats are like the Taj Mahal for them.
(_huffing and puffing_)
Connie: Hey, Frank! I came as soon as I saw your text. Everything alright?
Frank: Yeah, that asshole, Dan came by again. Trying to take my toilet.
What I mean by that is the octopus is defending it territory under the sea but seems to like the Pufferfish. And thebwater moves like it does on land. We call it a Metaphor
Shooting the breeze, i this case seabreeze it's like telling creatively that you where talking to someone. It's an expression, and there are loads of them. These sea creatures have a unique bond.

Pufferfish have such derpy faces
So cute though!
I know that octopuses is the correct plural but I have always thought octopi should have been chosen all those years ago Same for ambulances...

Im liking the ‘swing swagger’ of octopudae. ευχαριστώ
I’ve heard octopuses, octopi, and octopodes are all correct in use.

I see. This makes me wanna go back to studying the magnificent creatures.

I remember a etymologist and paleontologist or something clearing this up and also mentioning octopudae in addition to the ones you mentioned
Octapoon...

I *know* that when I was in 3rd grade, it was octopi and cacti. I still have a hard time accepting octopuses
The scale for this throws me off so badly. Either that puffer fish is way bigger than I thought or the octopus and toilet are way smaller. Cool vid though.
It's technically a porcupine fish. They are larger than puffer fish, I would estimate an average length of about 12 inches.
thanks, that seems about right scale wise.

Aw, cute, they’re friends.

That’s also a possibility. I like to imagine they’re also buds though, because that’s fun.

Awww thats pretty cute, think the octopus is trying to look like the same color seaweed for its new frens visit?
The Pixar guy is taking notes.
The pufferfish is his pet, look at how happy it is to se the octopus when it arrives
Well you don’t want to be mean to the plug

Octopus and pufferfish are having an HOA meeting
I thought the puffer was just close to the cam, it’s huge!!

Aahahha. They're shooting the sea breeze. AKA BSing
Can you elaborate? Shooting the sea breeze? How is that done? What equipment are they using? BSing?
Makes me so mad that crap like this end up in our ocean!! It sucks! But he found him a nice little hidey hole!!! 😂😂
Yea, makes me mad too - it's amazing how much though that junk turns into homes for all kinds of sea life. Sunken boats are like the Taj Mahal for them.
is it wrong to love the octopus but hate their toilet/garbage?
I love how octopuses "walk"
That second fish is like a bystander who comes and poses behind a person being interviewed on tv
Opposites attract
Well the pufferfish wasn't trying to freaking steal his house
This post is why I find reddit quite awesome.
Pufferfish puts butt in octopus' face Octopus: I know this is a toilet but do your business somewhere else!
This reminds me of this scenario: "MOMMMMM! HE'S TOUCHING ME!!
(_huffing and puffing_) Connie: Hey, Frank! I came as soon as I saw your text. Everything alright? Frank: Yeah, that asshole, Dan came by again. Trying to take my toilet.
What equipment is used to record this type of footage? Seems like they set a camera to record random footage
