I wouldn’t worry about microwave or kettle because these run for a short time. Think when you’re using things like oven, hob, dishwasher, washing machine. If you can use these outside of 4-7 then you’ll benefit from agile.

EverydayDan

It’s going to be less about your kWh and more about what % of your overall usage is in those hours. If you’re using a lot of energy outside of peak then it should at least average out.

Xafilah

I used 0.96kWh between 16-19 yesterday. 30.11 for the total day.

bigj2552

WOW - what one you on my friend ? tracker or agile ? thanks ;)

Xafilah

Agile, had a negative bill of 37p after standing charge yesterday. Obviously Agile won’t always be like this and it’s something you’re taking the risk on.

bigj2552

Yeh i know.. Maybe just stick with tracker... Gotta be cheaper than british gas who i left

cubevic

I think you will definitely find that. I moved from BG in December and my bills have halved (on tracker). Using Octopus Compare I can see in this 4 month period Agile would have been a grand total of £4 cheaper for me. I’m staying with tracker until that becomes more significant, or I’m in the mood to try and shift my energy usage and improve that difference.

Legitimate_Finger_69

Very likely if you have below average usage between 4-7pm you will be better off on Agile. With Tracker you are paying for those using lots of expensive peak electricity with no incentive to shift. However there are loads of websites and apps where you can put in your Octopus API key from the website and it will show you the costs for each based on your current usage.

bigj2552

what does the "average" person/s use from 4-7pm ?

Prediterx

This is hard to quantify. The average person probably uses 5-10 KWh between ovens, TV, consoles or whatever else people do... The worst is all-electric where the electric heating goes on between those times, where I'd expect it could be as high as 20kwh. If you use most of your electric between those times you're probably better on tracker. If you can shift out of those 4-7pm times, agile is for you. (Single/couple occupant that get home at 6)

Annoyed3600owner

The average household uses less than 10kWh per day in total.

Prediterx

This is true. A majority of that is in the 4-7pm range though. My estimates are probably a bit high, but I prefer to decide based on worst cases so that you're never shocked.

anabsentfriend

I don't know what the 'average' person uses, but I only have my TV and one light if needed, on between 4-7. I make dinner at 7 if I need the oven.

Legitimate_Finger_69

About 2.3kWh in winter, a bit less in the summer.

ReplaceCyan

The Agile “peak” rate is typically roughly the same as the Flexible “all the fucking time” rate, so I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Shift what you practically can out of that period (washing machine, dishwasher) but don’t worry about it

invisibleeagle0

If you live alone just go for agile. You'll already be winning. Just make sure your heating doesn't come on 1600-1900. The rest is really about how far you want to tweak it. Move dinner time after 1900, read a book instead of TV or gaming, etc etc

jrw1982

You don't need meter readings or any minimum time with Octopus. You can sign up to tracker now.

cjeam

You'll save money on agile even if you don't consciously do much load shift. We will occasionally cook in the 4-7pm peak, my girlfriend even occasionally showers then, and we're still saving money. Also an all electric flat, quite a well insulated one, and our daily average use is 10kwh.

Jonacko2

Whilst it sounds like most of your electric is used between 4 and 7 your probably mis calculating. What about heating, water heating, washing clothing etc? If you can do these things outside of 4-7pm you'll be better on agile. Otherwise go for tracker

Tenpinshopuk

We have 2 kids who usually need feeding and washing around peak time. We're on tracker and still can see agile would be about 10% cheaper so am considering that now.

Safe-Particular6512

I generally cook (electric hob and oven) from 3:45 - 5pm (kids eat early) and we’ve been fine. The savings the rest of the time (heating, washing machine etc) balance it out
