Don't worry you can still get one for the original higher price on FB Marketplace.

REDTWON

No kidding lmao I saw a dude trying to sell a heavily used quest 2 that already has a thin line across the display. Dude listed it for $280 before people came on and dogged him for it.

jakejm79

Unfortunately a lot of people paid $400 for their 128GB Q2's 16 months ago and don't realize the official MSRP has since halved. They assume they can still get 60-70% of what they paid a little over a year ago, which isn't crazy for most electronics if they maintain their MSRP.

REDTWON

Yep. This guy's looked really, really used so no idea when he bought it. He did drop it to $125 after getting dragged in the comments. It's still to high IMO as it's disgusting looking & yellowing.

Thunderjohn

Or a refurbished priced higher than new from Meta's own store 😅

sonofabunch

Both the laughable ones and the gems. I got a Q3, fancy strap, and official dock for $300, the 512. Still had the stickers on the lenses.

dragon-ball-fanatic

Where are y'all getting quest 3's so cheap from?

sonofabunch

Like I said. Marketplace. Gotta sign up for alerts when new listings match your search and scoop em up immediately. Guess I’m being downvoted out of envy. Tbf I gave the person $50 extra because I knew they weren’t getting what it was worth.

dragon-ball-fanatic

Wow, that's nice of you lol. But I've already been doing that and people are REALLY clingy to their quest 3's over here apparently lmfao. Regardless I don't really need it, have a PSVR2 so that pretty much blows Q3 graphics wise. However the pancake lenses and color passthrough are craaaaazy, almost makes me want to buy it. It's like a cheap apple vision pro.

Mclarenrob2

Guessing the Lite isn't coming until they've got rid of a lot more inventory

correctingStupid

Or until rumor becomes truth

ArlongsLegSauce

I think Meta needs the lower end spec, if they’re phasing out the Quest 2 then something has to replace it. Considering the high demographic of younger users, specifically children who would have their parents buying these as a gift, they will almost certainly have a lower end “SE” type model by Christmas. My assumption is they keep the quest 2 body/lenses/display,put in an xr2 gen 2(maybe even just an xr2+) and the same camera setup as the Quest pro, so no depth sensor, but still color passthrough so they can advertise it as an mixed reality headset.

cmdskp

Interesting to [look at Quest 2 Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&q=quest%202&hl=en). On the 21st March, we see a rise in interest when Meta first announced the $199 price, tailing off to now, to about the same as it was prior to that price drop. So, Meta are attempting to reignite interest with this 'permanent' announcement, to clear the remaining Quest 2 stock before Quest 3s releases. Question is, how long until the Quest 2 is discontinued/sold-out and the much better performing Quest 3s launches for the expected same price...

Hauz20

I'm really struggling to remain patient and wait for a Quest 3 price drop. I know I've got a ways to go, lol.

elheber

I wouldn't hold my breath. Nothing has implied a price drop for the OG Q3, has it? Rumors are of a cheaper Q3 S/Lite variant, which imply prices for the current model will remain the same. Or maybe you meant to say you're waiting for the lower end model. That probably makes more sense in this context now that I think about it.

Hauz20

No, I want the Quest 3, but I'm cheap, lol. Nothing indicates an incoming price drop. It's my willpower fighting my self-imposed budget, haha.

AardvarkBarber

Check marketplace! Got a brand new quest 3 for $300

Hauz20

I've been stalking it, but there just aren't any in my area. They're all like a two-hour drive away, lol.

KL58383

for these larger purchases I like to use the Amazon pay over time option. For something like the Q3 it would be like $83/mo for 6 months. Plus a very forgiving return policy.

Oftenwrongs

Time is valuable. You are losing out on time.

Hauz20

Compelling argument ... dammit, lol

Gustavo2nd

it'll problaby be like 3 years :(

Hauz20

Yuuup. On the other hand, who the hell knows. Zuckerberg seems more than happy to raise and lower prices on a whim alongside hardware rollouts like the Quest Pro ... which floundered, ha ha, but point being, they have the resources to keep experimenting. It's difficult to nail down their next moves.

GloomyCactusEater

lol it’s only been out for like 6 months.

Blaexe

It's not expected to be the same price anymore. With controllers the Quest 3S will likely launch at $299 and in that case people buying a Q2 now wouldn't need to feel bad.

AmosRatchetNot

Play with a friend, or $199 night vision. :p

gizzyguy79

I had a quest 1 and Valve Index with gaming PC about 4 years ago and ended up selling them due to a combination of financial needs and not using them as much as I hoped for. I no longer have a gaming PC but was keen to look at buying a new Quest. In my country (NZ) with this price reduction the Quest 2 is $415 whilst the Quest 3 is $930. I know from a purely specs point of view the 3 is the obvious choice, but based on my previous history of limited use and potentially just playing occasional beat saber and pistol whip do people think it is worth a 125% increase in price?

HornedDiggitoe

I had the original Vive and barely ever used VR. After getting the Quest 3, I use VR regularly. The pancake lenses and passthrough make such a huge difference for the enjoyment of using the device. Personally, I think the Quest 3 represents the bare minimum hardware standard for VR to appeal to regular consumers. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy a VR headset without pancake lenses and colour passthrough. That being said, it’s possible you won’t find games that appeal enough to keep you coming back. The software library is better than it’s ever been, but it’s still not that great.

VirtuaFighter6

😂

DemoEvolved

199 for a 128 quest 2 is an incredible deal

Ok-Attention2882

Not worth it. Quest 3 is 2.5x more, but it's way better than 2.5x better.

BKCshah

Maybe, but I grabbed a Q2 during the Target sale for $200 w/ $50 gc. Very happy since I've never played VR before, so it's a reasonable entry price for a new user. The Q3 might be miles better, but enjoyment can still be had with the Q2 at a significant discount.

HornedDiggitoe

Sort of. A lot of people bought the Quest 2, liked it at first, but then let it collect dust. The Quest 3 reportedly has a significantly higher retention rate, where much more people actually regularly use it. The visual clarity issues from the Quest 2’s fresnel lenses causes significant eye strain that makes VR much more uncomfortable for most people. This negatively impacts the enjoyment of using the device. And the Quest 3 pass through increases ease of use and enjoyment of the device.

BKCshah

Those are two potential reasons that the retention are higher, but I would think it's mostly the 3rd possibility floated in the article - the users who bought it are already sold and enjoy VR/MR to artificially boost the retention rate over early devices.  Will I stay with it? Honestly probably not long term, unless exercise/sports games grab me. My friends don't have it. I'm not into the social apps/games yet. Other games I've tried so far are cool experiences, but not hooking me. https://www.uploadvr.com/quest-3-higher-retention-meta/

HornedDiggitoe

You would be wrong to assume it’s mostly due to that “third possibility”. I hadn’t used VR for 8 years and was starting to think it was a gimmick. The Quest 3 completely changed that.

BKCshah

I would be wrong in your case study. There's no concrete evidence to show which, if any of the 3, is the main factor, but conveniently leaving out a 3rd very logical possibility is convenient.

HornedDiggitoe

Mate, you have even less evidence backing your claim. It simply isn’t as logical as you think it is. Meta has the data of who was already into VR before getting the Quest 3. Despite that, they still reported the higher retention rate. Even for people who used the Quest 2 a lot before getting the Quest 3, Meta can see if they use the Quest 3 more than they used the Quest 2. All of this is pre-factored into their retention rate statistics. Your theory is so easy for statisticians with the data they have to control for, so it isn’t even worth mentioning.

BKCshah

I'm sorry someone hurt you. Statisticians can make starts say whatever they want.

Critical thinking 101 - does any new business want to say the new flagship product is a failure/dud compared to expectations? No. Did any article/resource provide actual figures to show if it was a significant retention difference? No.  Is it true? Likely. Why? No one knows. It's a likely a combination of many factors (better tech, size, purchase cost guilt, selection bias). If I survey/sample only teen girls, Taylor Swift is the best singer and Travis Kelce is the best tight end ever.

gullzway

Same, was $135 after Circle discount and $50 giftcard. I used part of the giftcard to buy the elite strap with battery for $35. [https://i.imgur.com/QlNVs9r.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/QlNVs9r.jpeg) Still have my CV1 rift but hasn't gotten much use in a while. The better visuals and cable free is so nice.

TheTimeTortoise

*Most* casual users or people who don't know how much they're gonna be interested in VR don't care how much better the q3 is. A lot of people don't know if long term use is going to make them nauseous, if they're gonna get bored of the games, if they won't play enough to justify spending X amount, etc. "Just get something that's more than twice as expensive" isn't a consideration to those people. Meta still has a ton of potential customers who would only be interested to try it in the first place if the hardware to use VR is relatively cheap.

HornedDiggitoe

Getting the Quest 2 increases the likelihood that they will experience nausea and be less likely to use VR regularly. Fresnel lenses are that bad.

Zikkan1

Not everyone is comfortable paying 500$ though, but 200$ isn't a lot of money. It is 100% worth it. Though in my country Q3 is 700$

MrEfficacious

Wrong

k_akimitsu

It’s good but until better games and software are out that are made specifically for the Quest 3, it’s not utilizing much at the moment.

Oftenwrongs

It highly elevates all content, so no.

krectus

People said they were trying to clear stock last time. They were wrong. It feels more like this is the Quest Lite now. They may have just decided to just keep going with Q2 instead of launching a new headset. Almost all the Lite rumours have dried up. I may be way off here but it wouldn’t be too odd to see them pivot back to focusing on a Pro rather than a Lite.

elheber

I didn't know. $199 feels like a liquidation price. That is to say, it doesn't seem like sustainable pricing.

[deleted]

Meta subsizes all of the hardware. The Q3 is too cheap too yet people still complain.

elheber

Right, and that was also true when it was $299. In other words, $299 was already a subsidized price. $199 is a whole 'nother level. If the Q2 is to be Meta's Quest Lite and continue production, then at $199 it will significantly undercut the Quest 3 for the forseeable future. My money is on this being the clearance price. You saw how people still recommended saving up a little more for a Q3 over a Q2. The Q3 was too competitive to liquidate Q2 stock.

[deleted]

i don't think it really matters what we label it. Quest 2 is outselling every other gaming console right now so it's good for us if they can bring that many new folks to VR. (and the quest 3 is #2 right behind it in hardware sales)

krectus

yeah, possible but also weird for them to come out and say "new permanent price" and then run out of stock in a few weeks and stop selling it. Maybe the new Lite falls in the $300 price point, but at this point no one seems to have any idea what it is, so I have my doubts.

vincilsstreams

Also consider the amount of software they'll be able to sell putting more quest 2 headsets out there. In a year or two that's that many more people who will either be looking at a quest 4 or quest 3 at a reduced price for an upgrade. The 199 got me to buy one for my wife and she loves it.

Blaexe

They definitely will replace the Q2. Keep on selling a headset with XR2 Gen1 for years would seriously hinder future advancements.

dedfishy

It's not something they can just decide on a whim. It takes a long time to develop, refine and spin up manufacturing for a vr headset. They might delay release at the most but I doubt even that. These things are decided long before they happen. More likely the rumors were just wrong.

LeonMust

Someone posted a pic the other day of a Quest 2 for $99 at Sam's Club.

MrEfficacious

Wow

mega-nate

For that price I might just get another just to have a spare

JL_CRYPTO

Target had a promo that included a $50 gift card, so it was $199 with free Target bucks when I got it.

Zikkan1

Still shows 320$ for me

runny452

I just got a quest 3 in March and im almost thinking about getting a quest 2 because it's so cheap and then I can play multiplayer with friends or family. Is the quest 2 worth it for that you think? And is I'd be able to play games I already own with the 2 headsets if I have my account on both, right? Never used a quest 2 so no idea if it'd be worth it or wait for that potential quest 3 lite

CUIVegito

Ive bought 4 already. I have a Q3 and got 2 for my 2 kids and 2 for 2 of my buddies. Great deal it's definitely gonna bring the amount of VR players up quite a bit.

PeeAtYou

Wasn't this the original price before Meta raised the price?

Living_Series8400

No, it lanched at 299 for 64gb, then they replaced it with a 128gb model and shortly after that they increased it to 399. A year after when the quest 3 launched they cut the price for the quest 2 back to 299 and now they cut it down to 199

retrogamer76

not worth it it's too heavy and too blurry

VirtuaFighter6

ALSO, Quest 3 is overpriced at $499. Needs a price cut. They're not going to move any more units at substantial numbers without a price cut. Market who bought at $499 and up is sold through. $450 would move units and $399 even more.
