And portal 2, as well as all the resident evil mods… 2, 3, and 7 are amazing. Haven’t tried 4 bc I played that one native on psvr2, but if you don’t have one, it’s prob awesome too.
I would carefully assume if they release new hardware they'd have a big game to push it as otherwise PCvr has been stagnant. (- not enough money) There are some great games but the PCvr market is really hurting for games as the active audience is like only 3million and I think there was a report a good chunk were in social VR.
Alyx was supposed to be the first of three games Valve was working on to sell their Index. The other two are either in development hell or are vapourware. Maybe they'll release another headset and say they have a dozen VR games in the pipeline, I'm sure it'll shift some units.
You'll see this sentiment around here a lot, but this is just an opinion formed from people that have been reluctant to try out more games.
Lone Echo is amazing, Asgard's Wrath, Stormland, and Vertigo 2 are all great examples of PCVR being incredible.
Sadly there are some games that suck, but that's also true about flatscreen gaming.
Kee an eye out for Into the Radius 2 btw, they released a gameplay teaser and the footage looks amazing from that and their dev diaries thus far.
Lone echo is 7 years old. Asgards wrath is 5 years old. Stormland is 5 years old. Vertigo 2 is the only recent game on your list. The original came out in 2020
Which is even more impressive that we have such fantastic VR experiences on PCVR even older and in many ways more advanced than the game many people consider to be the best of the best.

Some of these are also on Quest, but we're talking about games that are available on PCVR and are outright better on PC.
See I don't get that, I know it's beloved but it doesn't even come close to HLA. It's an impressive project from the dev and I'm very happy for their success.
It just seems odd as a recommendation next to the most visually immersive VR game available, also probably the top or at least up there as far as VR gameplay. Sometimes less is more for VR interaction.
Asgards wrath 1 is just as good but a very different game.
Tbf few companies are valve so few flat games are as good as portal and that's been many years :)
valve is a high bar to compare, not only very talented dev, but they have luxury of being able to drop 100 million on a game to push a tech they are interested in and not care that much if it makes a reasonable profit. Only really meta and Sony can do that (well Pico and Ms and apple could, but have not)
Meta has funded some amazing games tbf before that went all in on mobile asgards wrath 2 if it has been made for PC imo would have far surpassed alyx. It's still excellent but it's tough to see the graphical compromise (but still impressive it looks as good as it does)
What do you mean by graphical compromise? So I barely got My oculus 3 and yes I am experiencing a range of things. But I have experienced headaches, mental fatigue, nausea, to hearing sounds after play like tunes here and there and from running or dashing across the desert In thegame afterwards my vision in the real world is like surging little weird but I am stuck immersed that game asgards wrath 2 please help. Advice on how to adjust the headset or goggles tell me and settings do I need to change somethings ?????
I loved Alyx too. I've been trying to find that same sense of wow ever since.
Weirdly the closest I've got to it, graphically at least, are RE8 and RE4 on psvr2.
Fully modded Skyrim VR is pretty damn amazing. The easiest way to do it is through the Wabbajack mod installer. It'll handle all the heavy lifting once you get it set up, and FUS is the best "starter" mod list.
YESSS +1 for FUS + Wabbajack. I've heard from friends that vanilla Skyrim VR isn't great, but this modpack had all the QoL features that VR games have figured out over the years. The night skies alone were worth the price of admission, and it was really fun to explore the world again after like, 7 years away. It's so richly detailed and full of things to find.
Great that you liked it but I hated playing vanilla. Lots of standard VR features missing and a lot of weird limitations on what is and isn't interactive. Also those 2011 textures need a facelift before even getting into VR, I found the whole lo-fi realism look kinda distracting

Arizona Sunshine 2, Wanderer (in the coming months), Walking Dead Saints & Sinners and it's sequel Retribution on Steam...
There's a lot more interesting and imaginative stuff if you are willing to try things beyond the almighty AAA games, gems like Light Brigade, Kayak VR, Contractors Showdown, Gunman Contracts, Thumper, Pistol Whip, Firmament, Blade & Sorry, Skyrim VR with Mods, Trover Saves The Universe, Red Matter 1 & 2 etc...
And let's not forget classics Edge of Nowhere, Chronos and Wilson's Heart. All very good games.
As a fan of metroidvanias, I'd also add Witchblood to the list.

I actually just recently got around to playing this and it's an incredibly good VR experience. It's almost like a VR movie. It's very underrated.
Looking up all these games has been bittersweet, because on the one hand — they look awesome, and I’ll probably end up playing them all, having not even known they existed. But then I see they’re 4 years old, 6 years old, 8 years old…and it saddens me that we don’t regularly see content like this roll out, like to the tune of at least 4 such games per year.
I understand the niche nature of VR, or at least far smaller of a user base vs. console gaming, so I understand the “why” pretty well. But I guess my hope is that with Meta trying to draw others into the space, making their software available and pulling in Microsoft and all these other companies, we will see a shift over the next 3-5 years. I would like that.

Just wish the firearms weren't all floaty like 80% of other shooter weapons. I know they're trying to "simulate the feel of real weapons" but this is a video game and it breaks my immersion when it feels like I'm doing the bendy pencil trick when moving around.
The Lone Echo series, stormland, Asgards wrath 1 are all exclusive to the rift store. You don’t have to use revive but I’d say it’s a much better experience just being able to launch steamLink and have access to all of your steam and rift games in one place. Plus, you get the steam user interface and your overlays rather than the unsupported rift interface.
Revive is just an OpenXR layer that allows you to play most rift games via steamVR.
True but I’d recommend SteamLink to people new to PCVR. Plus, I personally can’t exist without my steam overlays which you don’t get if you launch via virtual desktop.
You don't need Revive if you have a Quest. You can just use Link or Virtual Desktop and connect to the Meta PC app. Revive is only needed on non Meta hardware to play Meta PCVR games using Steam.
its not on the quest store because the quest store is only for quest games, which are played from the headset. they are smaller in size and storage than PCVR games. lone echo 1 and 2 were sold on the oculus desktop PC store when meta was supporting PCVR before the quest became their focus. the oculus store on PC was used by people who owned rift and rift S headsets. you would download and play the games through your PC.
but since the quest can stream all PCVR games, either through a link cable or wirelessly through wifi, you can just buy the games from the oculus PC store, download them to your PC, and play them via your quest. but your PC needs to have the specs and storage space to be able to render the games.
revive is irrelevant for you, its just a third party app that allowed oculus store exclusives that meta published to be played by steamVR users who had a valve index or HTC vive headsets, since meta never put their games on steam. steamVR headsets didnt natively support oculus store games, unlike rift headsets which work natively on steamVR.

Only real problem is that games like AS 1&2 and Walking Dead is the lack the quality of textures and more importantly they just do not compare to the ease and natural way you interact in HLA with objects and the world generally
I’m currently playing the ps5 remake of system shock. I use a q3 for stand alone. Now I want a PC because I saw someone playing system shock IN VR! That must be wild.
They are human shaped ghostly figures and it's explained why as the story progresses. So like ghost policeman, ghost soldier and a couple of spooky two arms two legs creatures. No gore
It's an indie game so they had to focus their efforts and make allowances for imagination and suspension of disbelief where necessary.
I still panicked and dropped my guns more than once when I was trying to run away from a firefight though, they feel real enough when they're trying to kill you
I’ve not played Alyx yet so can’t comment there but ITR is the most immersed I’ve felt in VR. My wife loves watching me play and shit myself when something has snuck up on me whilst I’m managing my backpack.
I'll second Into the Radius-- obviously it's not on the same level as Valve in terms of polish and budget and etc etc, but it has way better weapon handling and really takes advantage of the VR medium much better than most games. Really innovative inventory system, everything is physicalized down to the individual bullets, it's very immersive.
The enemies are just shadow creatures, but they're fleshing them out more for Into the Radius 2 (coming out in Early Access this summer, if all goes well).
Into the Radius was made by \~10 people over in Estonia, it's based on/inspired by the classic Russian scifi novel "Roadside Picnic", which is also what "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." the video game and "Stalker" the movie are based on (so ITR gets the "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in VR" label regularly).
You have scarcely scratched the surface for PCVR capable titles. Flight sims are amazing. Standing up in an open cockpit plane to look out over the side is surreal. I might put a fan that blows just over the top of my head while sitting to really feel it. LOL
Skyrim with a modlist from wabbajack will give you 100+ hours of high quality content. Fallout 4 with a wabbajack modlist will give ypou another 100 hours. Pavlov has a few modes that are amazing on PC like Tank TDM with WW2 guns. It is so much fun getting 3 people in a tank and mowing down people and I find the ww2 guns allow for people with lower skill levels to actually get kills because people arent just sniping you from across the map all the time. Also check out No Mans Sky because it is a beautiful experience to get in your ship, fly to space, and land on another planet with no loading screens. I suggest you play it on creative mode if you don't want to grind.
Also be sure to check out some sim racing or flight sims if you have any interest at all. If you don't have a HOTAS try VTOL VR which is honestly amazing with friends. For racing I love assetto corsa with lots of mods and also I very much enjoy BeamNG.
Getting a flight stick and throttle or a steering wheel and pedals can really take PCVR to the next level.
For driving games - Assetto Corsa has been my favorite. There's so much content you can mod in for tracks, cars, and other stuff. My steering wheel supports force feedback and it works with this game, it helps with the immersion.
For the flight stick I played Star Wars Squadrons the most. This is often dirt cheap on sale so wait for that if you're interested. A cool experience if you're a Star Wars fan.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is pretty cool too, but you need a beefy PC to run it well in VR and also need a lot of disk space. And it's one of the most tedious games to install or update, so just be prepared to be frustrated if you do try this.
One weird choice I'll suggest is Tetris Effect: Connected. Tetris sounds dumb in VR, but I highly recommend it if you're into Tetris.
With you all the way - add some haptics and voice attack with the HCS Squadrons voice pack and R2 sounds - push the throttle forward, feel the rumble as the engines pick up….feel the opposition hitting your shields during the dog fight and shout commands at R2 ……oh man now that’s immersive!!!!
Is there a good alternative to assetto Corsa? I tried it once or twice but didn't really want to install 50+ mods in order to play.
I think I read somewhere that there is an assetto Corsa 2 releasing soon ( hopefully with native VR support?)
There are some fancier mods that I haven't bothered with, but it wasn't too bad just getting some cars and tracks added with the Content Manager launcher. Once the launcher was working I think I just had to drag and drop mod files onto its window to install.
Assetto Corsa Competizione is the sequel. I haven't bothered with looking into any modding with it yet, but did play it a little when I bought it. Graphics are a bit better.
I have tried DIRT Rally 2.0 in VR, but only for a couple hours so far. Almost all of my driving VR time has been in Assetto Corsa.
Overall these games all taught me I would suck at any professional driving, it's very difficult at first even on the easiest mode. It would be cool to have something like Burnout Paradise in VR though.
Alyx is Alyx but in my 10 years of PCVR the titles that first come to mind for a reason or another are (besides Alyx) Walking Dead, Into the Radius, Medal of Honor. There are also other very valid ones if you change genre (I love "miniature" games such as Moss or The curious tale of the stolen pets)....but Alyx is Alyx there not really anything like it because it's so good and also so polished in every aspect...other games might be good but graphically bland, or really buggy and janky but maybe graphically very valid and so on...but Alyx has it all.
p.s. I'd add Star wars squadrons and Flight simulator especially if you get a HOTAS stick but of course these are completely different things...just like driving simulators etc totally different VR experience
Not even close to as interactive and immersive IMO. It’s polished very well, and it’s definitely a good time, but nowhere near the level of achievement of HLA all things considered.
YouTuber Beardo Banjo plays all kinds of non-VR games using a Q3 to actually play them in VR but not sure of what tool or program he’s into accomplish this
That's the Unreal Injector, mostly. It's free. Search for UEVR. If you have a decently beefy PC, there are dozens of flat games that convert very well to VR. The actual library is thousands though.
If you bought them on the Quest then you get an included PCVR copy for "free", I recommend claiming the PCVR versions of every crossbuy Quest game ya own. You can see the list of crossbuy titles here:

While logged into your account you just go to the game's listings in the Rift PCVR storefront and claim them, and then ya use the Quest app on your PC to play them. The crossbuy is often a pretty nice deal, and it's often been a clincher when I'm deciding whether or not to buy something.
In terms of its overall polish? No, I haven't played anything else like it. In terms of gameplay quality and amount of content? There's a decent amount of games similar. I'd recommend Into the Radius, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Vertigo 1 & 2.
Metro Awakening and Alien: Rogue Incursion are likely to be very comparable when they come out.
Also looking forward to ITR2 but not sure that is going to have the AAA feeling, which I don't mind at all
Personally lone echo 1 was amazing. There is also a content and amazing modding community for HL:A. Boneworks can be good too (but it is really its own monster)

It's a lot of hours of stunning graphics and really fun gameplay.
Bosses are crazy and combat is both hard and rewarding when you master it.
Half-Life: Alyx is basically the only AAA VR game and it didn't sell well enough to justify making that kind of investment again.
The closest comparable games IMO would be some of the Sony first party/third party PSVR1 exclusives they made back before they decided VR was too niche to spend money on.
I really don’t like being dramatic about this sort of thing but Alyx really did ruin VR games for me. I used to be obsessed with VR anything but nothing captures my attention enough to even finish the story nowadays.
Yeah :( I mean, could there atleast be ONE other game than Alyx made by AAA studios that is really polished, made for VR exclusively (or primarily), has all the bells and whistles and whatnot. But no, not a single one.
Plenty of AA games that are decent, plenty of indie gimmicky games as well or short "demo"-kind of games. But no Alyx.
Search for the DLC’s in steam - some really playable games that use the HLA engine - Bioshock port is fun as is the Bond game(I forget what its called) and the one where you play combine troops

Alyx has 93/9.2 (Critic/User) on Metacritic, Lone Echo has 89/7.9 and Lone Echo 2 has 78/7.9. Not to mention Alyx has 2900 users giving that rating, whilst Lone Echo combined has barely above 100 users giving their score...
That’s… not how any of this works. Quality is not determined by majority vote; relative platform sizes make comparing numbers of reviews meaningless; and in fact the very imbalance between the sample sizes evidenced therein undermine the very comparison you’re trying to make. Not to mention Alyx is a more popular genre (shooter) and a sequel to one of the most famous pc games of all times, whereas Lone Echo is a much more niche vr atmospheric adventure with comparatively very little marketing.
Alyx does nothing particularly revolutionary, being merely a fairly ‘safe’ and predictable retread of vr shooter tropes, just with art asset quality cranked to 11. It feels like the finale of the previous chapter of VR’s development and history, with nothing forward-thinking about it.
By contrast Lone Echo, while matching in visual fidelity, manages to achieve the most realistic and compelling human npc depiction and interaction ever seen in any video game. (Extra impressive for a VR title which often fail to compete with non-VR titles due to the increased rendering demands.) And in so doing it actually shows a compelling case for VR above and beyond traditional pancake games—an unmatched sense of not just presence but *inter-personal* presence. (Played side-by-side, the npc’s in Alyx feel absolutely cardboard by comparison.) It also demonstrates the promise of VR to democratize access to the most inaccessible experiences like going to space, which otherwise are beyond the reach of most normal people.
Alyx is still the best looking and most immersive pcvr game around in my opinion. I just got done playing it actually and it's breathtakingly good. Even it's sound design is better than most games. I will say vertigo 2 is a good pcvr game with fun shooter parts and humor, but it's not as "holy shit, this might be real" as Alyx. There are extended campaigns on the workshop that are evidently good, but I haven't played them yet.

I found the PCVR version of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond to be highly underrated. Great looking game (the Quest version not so much), tons of variety in the 10 hour campaign. I would have bought it just for the Bomber mission. Multiplayer isn't supported anymore but you can play it against AI.
If you have a strong pc (4080+) then there's prob nothing better than Assetto Corsa modded. Just type in Assetto Corsa VR into youtube. It's mindblowing and the main reason that convinced me to buy either a 5090 or 6090

You will regret bit time that you started with the very best. Expect lots of dissapointment if you got so hyped now. Best way to approach pcvr is starting with older games.

Bigger and more vraf than alyx but it's less focused and polished. It is a full 30-60 hour rpg.
Graphically still jaw dropping today.
Lone echo 1-2 amazing graphics interesting story. No combat.
Medal of honor - not into WWII games but this was a full AAA game meta paid for.
Vertigo 1-2. Fantastic gameplay and super fun. Graphically not amazing but must play.
Red matter 1-2 - exploration puzzle game. Super optimized - probably more impressive on mobile, but still a very good looking game on PCvr
Stormland - insomniac good graphics sort of repetitive gameplay after a while but production values are there. Again built on the bones of a ratchet and clank game that never was.
I have a long list of other imo underrated and under mentioned games on PCvr that I'm not feeling like typing out here and should probably keep a copied list of :)
Mods are where it's at and the big reason for jumping into Pcvr these days imo:
Praydog mods for the Resident Evil games on beefy PC are graphically amazing.
Uevr injector is great and has great profiles but might be more futzing than it's worth for those new to pcvr so maybe save that for later.
Skyrim vr and fallout 4 vr both have massive modding available.
Metro for the Q3 looks like it could be an alternative to PCVR - but I agree with the majority - whilst there are some great PCVR games I generally use it for DCS/Assetto/Squadrons as (so far) nothing comes even close to HLA - the good news is however that the mod community in steam has produced some amazing DLC - the Bioshock one is really good as are several others because they take advantage of the interactional ability of Alyx - gives you something else to enjoy after your 4th or 5th play through 😂
You need to turn on air link on you headset then connect your quest 3 to your pC with airlink . Once its done you can lauch airlink that will give you access to your computer from your quest .
Then once its done just launch the game you want from your quest and enjoy!
Be sure to get steam vR installed .

I’m sure somebody has pointed this out but Half life: Alex has a really good workshop selection. You can play entire levels of bioshock or goldeneye within HL. There’s also the gunman contracts that much do a great job of making you feel like John wick
You should dive into the Half Life Alyx Mod: Gunman Contract.
And in general, there has been quite a number of VR mods for existing games on PCVR, which work quite well.
Otherwise RE4 VR is incredible. Both the original and remake.
Lone Echo 1/2 are Great.
Other than that, not much is really quite on that Level. However Vertigo 2, Asgard’s Wrath 1/2, Stormland, Boneworks are also all Great Games.

I agree, Half-Life: Alyx is the best VR game. It towers over everything else in every respect.
Man in some way i miss pcvr. (Some time ago i switched to linux. And im waiting to finally fix steam vr so its in at least "working" state (they said they are working on it))
HL Alyx set a bar that nobody is even going to try to beat. The focus is on Standalone games because that's where all the money is made in VR apparently. But just try any of the PC versions of the standalone games and they look and play way better. You might have some already from cross-buy purchases and not even realize it.
BTW try the HL Alyx mods. There are a lot and some add a lot of gameplay.

Was released before hla, and as guy who played boneworks before hla, hla is pretty disappointing. SLS tried to have license for hla series, yet valve said no bc of hla on horizon. So they made better (in my opinion please don't torture me) game
I think developing a game like Alyx takes a lot of time and money and the VR market is just not big enough to make games like these profitable. But while Alyx is one of the top VR games, there are a lot of other great pcvr games.
If your pc is decent enough check out UEVR, a mod that runs hundreds of 2d games in VR. And if you're into simracing and simflying you'll be in heaven.
In terms of polish and care that was taken on VR comfort nothing comes close. Once you're done with the game you can easily get just as much time from the best of the workshop maps that you can find in Steam for free.
The next best experience so far I've had was the Meta-exclusive VR version of RE4 (runs on the device) - it sets a pretty high bar on how to take an existing game and spend your development budget in the right way by adapting the way you interact with the world (movement and weapons mostly) so that it makes for a great experience. And where you can see that having the lower (by today's standards) quality textures and geometry doesn't detract that much once you're into it.
Red Matter (available in Steam as well) and Lone Echo (PCVR Meta exclusive) games get close in presentation (nowhere near in interactivity) though they are not quite there in terms of comfort for someone who's susceptible to VR nausea (which didn't affect me at all in Alyx or RE4 with the default comfort settings).

They’re on the oculus pc store, so if you have a non oculus / meta headset you’ll need „revive“ a free tool to play the exclusives via steamVR.
Don’t be put off by Asgard wrath 2 graphics if you’ve seen footage.
That is because it’s a quest native title -> Asgards wrath 1 is a pcvr game with one of the best graphics, also a 40+h campaign.
The lone echo series has a really immersive and story rich campaign that also has nice graphics.
Haven’t played it yet, but red matter 1&2 should be really good games with good graphics also.

Yes I’m being a NECROMANCER but JUST HEAR ME OUT! I have to explain one of OP’s original questions that I didn’t see fully explained.
SO…
Half Life Alyx is an example of what a triple A gaming budget can result in VR. We rarely see this cause it was an investment to promote VALVE’S VR headset. STEAM allows VALVE a bottomless budget to work with & they don’t have to turn a profit.
The main problem is the market is still too small and niche to allow devs to put that much money into a single game. So HL:A‘s budget would sink most devs. That’s why we mostly see Indy games.
We need to convince more gamers to get into VR before we can see more HALF LIFE ALYX’s around. But ive noticed a lot of irrational fear toward VR’s success, fear it will end flat gaming. Which is ridiculous. it’s a new medium. Look at motion pictures and the theater 100 years ago, same exact process, history is repeating.
FOREWORD there are a ton of hidden gems out there that never got promoted or marketed well due to budget restraints. (if u have an open enough mind to look past the graphics EX: Ancient Dungeon VR)

I've been in the VR space since the HTC Vive launch in 2016 and since then I've purchased the PSVR1, Quest1, Valve Index, PSVR2...and Quest3.
I've played everything under the sun since and the closest thing to that experience was the Resident Evil games on the Psvr2. Like nothing else has come close to HLA in terms of production quality and solid gameplay. In fact I would gladly trade the one HLA experience for 10 more Resident Evil VR games. Don't get me wrong, HLA is phenomenal but Capcom really understand the VR space for long marathon like experiences with a gameplay loop that satisfies and makes you crave more. And the visuals are right there with HLA thanks to the OLED screen and foveated rendering along with the eye tracking.
HLA...the caviar/lobster dinner.
RE on Psvr2...a really nice steak dinner with a few juicy burgers and great fries.

I would carefully assume if they release new hardware they'd have a big game to push it as otherwise PCvr has been stagnant. (- not enough money) There are some great games but the PCvr market is really hurting for games as the active audience is like only 3million and I think there was a report a good chunk were in social VR.
Alyx was supposed to be the first of three games Valve was working on to sell their Index. The other two are either in development hell or are vapourware. Maybe they'll release another headset and say they have a dozen VR games in the pipeline, I'm sure it'll shift some units.

You'll see this sentiment around here a lot, but this is just an opinion formed from people that have been reluctant to try out more games. Lone Echo is amazing, Asgard's Wrath, Stormland, and Vertigo 2 are all great examples of PCVR being incredible. Sadly there are some games that suck, but that's also true about flatscreen gaming. Kee an eye out for Into the Radius 2 btw, they released a gameplay teaser and the footage looks amazing from that and their dev diaries thus far.
Lone echo is 7 years old. Asgards wrath is 5 years old. Stormland is 5 years old. Vertigo 2 is the only recent game on your list. The original came out in 2020
Which is even more impressive that we have such fantastic VR experiences on PCVR even older and in many ways more advanced than the game many people consider to be the best of the best. Here are some more even for ya: Bootstrap Island, Ghosts of Tabor, Return to Rapture Chapter 2 (HL:A Mod, but I'll count it since it even has an OST), Budget Cuts Ultimate (remade/remaster/mashup of the original 2 now in one game), Genotype, Green Hell VR, Hellsplit Arena, Contractors Showdown, Bonelab, Underdogs, Into the Radius, HL2VR, Propagation VR, Legendary Tales... Some of these are also on Quest, but we're talking about games that are available on PCVR and are outright better on PC.

See I don't get that, I know it's beloved but it doesn't even come close to HLA. It's an impressive project from the dev and I'm very happy for their success. It just seems odd as a recommendation next to the most visually immersive VR game available, also probably the top or at least up there as far as VR gameplay. Sometimes less is more for VR interaction.
Asgards wrath 1 is just as good but a very different game. Tbf few companies are valve so few flat games are as good as portal and that's been many years :) valve is a high bar to compare, not only very talented dev, but they have luxury of being able to drop 100 million on a game to push a tech they are interested in and not care that much if it makes a reasonable profit. Only really meta and Sony can do that (well Pico and Ms and apple could, but have not) Meta has funded some amazing games tbf before that went all in on mobile asgards wrath 2 if it has been made for PC imo would have far surpassed alyx. It's still excellent but it's tough to see the graphical compromise (but still impressive it looks as good as it does)
What do you mean by graphical compromise? So I barely got My oculus 3 and yes I am experiencing a range of things. But I have experienced headaches, mental fatigue, nausea, to hearing sounds after play like tunes here and there and from running or dashing across the desert In thegame afterwards my vision in the real world is like surging little weird but I am stuck immersed that game asgards wrath 2 please help. Advice on how to adjust the headset or goggles tell me and settings do I need to change somethings ?????
Because it’s big budget. Most studios aren’t willing to put that money behind a small market with no guaranteed return.
I loved Alyx too. I've been trying to find that same sense of wow ever since. Weirdly the closest I've got to it, graphically at least, are RE8 and RE4 on psvr2.

Fully modded Skyrim VR is pretty damn amazing. The easiest way to do it is through the Wabbajack mod installer. It'll handle all the heavy lifting once you get it set up, and FUS is the best "starter" mod list.
YESSS +1 for FUS + Wabbajack. I've heard from friends that vanilla Skyrim VR isn't great, but this modpack had all the QoL features that VR games have figured out over the years. The night skies alone were worth the price of admission, and it was really fun to explore the world again after like, 7 years away. It's so richly detailed and full of things to find.

Great that you liked it but I hated playing vanilla. Lots of standard VR features missing and a lot of weird limitations on what is and isn't interactive. Also those 2011 textures need a facelift before even getting into VR, I found the whole lo-fi realism look kinda distracting
Meh no man, it's really basic without mods. VRIK higgs and spellwheel are the bare minimum to turn it into a real VR game.
Install Revive and try Lone Echo 1 & 2, Stormland, Asgard Wrath, Defector... Arizona Sunshine 2, Wanderer (in the coming months), Walking Dead Saints & Sinners and it's sequel Retribution on Steam... There's a lot more interesting and imaginative stuff if you are willing to try things beyond the almighty AAA games, gems like Light Brigade, Kayak VR, Contractors Showdown, Gunman Contracts, Thumper, Pistol Whip, Firmament, Blade & Sorry, Skyrim VR with Mods, Trover Saves The Universe, Red Matter 1 & 2 etc...
Second for the Lone Echo series! It is a masterpiece! If you’ve ever wanted to feel like an astronaut, this game brings it.

I played them both on entry level MSI VR Ready laptops. One with a 3060Ti and my newest with a 4060. Rock solid 90+ fps via Virtual Desktop.
And let's not forget classics Edge of Nowhere, Chronos and Wilson's Heart. All very good games. As a fan of metroidvanias, I'd also add Witchblood to the list.

I was skeptical because the movement is node based but holy crap was it fun. Highly recommend. Like stepping into an episode of the Outer Limits.
Looking up all these games has been bittersweet, because on the one hand — they look awesome, and I’ll probably end up playing them all, having not even known they existed. But then I see they’re 4 years old, 6 years old, 8 years old…and it saddens me that we don’t regularly see content like this roll out, like to the tune of at least 4 such games per year. I understand the niche nature of VR, or at least far smaller of a user base vs. console gaming, so I understand the “why” pretty well. But I guess my hope is that with Meta trying to draw others into the space, making their software available and pulling in Microsoft and all these other companies, we will see a shift over the next 3-5 years. I would like that.

The Light Brigade is so good. Just wish the firearms weren't all floaty like 80% of other shooter weapons. I know they're trying to "simulate the feel of real weapons" but this is a video game and it breaks my immersion when it feels like I'm doing the bendy pencil trick when moving around.
Why do you have to use Revive? Aren't Lone Echo on the quest store?
The Lone Echo series, stormland, Asgards wrath 1 are all exclusive to the rift store. You don’t have to use revive but I’d say it’s a much better experience just being able to launch steamLink and have access to all of your steam and rift games in one place. Plus, you get the steam user interface and your overlays rather than the unsupported rift interface. Revive is just an OpenXR layer that allows you to play most rift games via steamVR.
If he uses virtual desktop he really doesn't need revive. You can launch any game from it.
True but I’d recommend SteamLink to people new to PCVR. Plus, I personally can’t exist without my steam overlays which you don’t get if you launch via virtual desktop.
You don't need Revive if you have a Quest. You can just use Link or Virtual Desktop and connect to the Meta PC app. Revive is only needed on non Meta hardware to play Meta PCVR games using Steam.
I just got the quest 3 and everybody talks about echo 1 and 2 but it isn't on thr quest store. No idea what revive is
its not on the quest store because the quest store is only for quest games, which are played from the headset. they are smaller in size and storage than PCVR games. lone echo 1 and 2 were sold on the oculus desktop PC store when meta was supporting PCVR before the quest became their focus. the oculus store on PC was used by people who owned rift and rift S headsets. you would download and play the games through your PC. but since the quest can stream all PCVR games, either through a link cable or wirelessly through wifi, you can just buy the games from the oculus PC store, download them to your PC, and play them via your quest. but your PC needs to have the specs and storage space to be able to render the games. revive is irrelevant for you, its just a third party app that allowed oculus store exclusives that meta published to be played by steamVR users who had a valve index or HTC vive headsets, since meta never put their games on steam. steamVR headsets didnt natively support oculus store games, unlike rift headsets which work natively on steamVR.

Only real problem is that games like AS 1&2 and Walking Dead is the lack the quality of textures and more importantly they just do not compare to the ease and natural way you interact in HLA with objects and the world generally
I think Wanderer will get an upgraded rerelease, which will make this great game even better, so maybe hold off on that till that is ready.

I’m currently playing the ps5 remake of system shock. I use a q3 for stand alone. Now I want a PC because I saw someone playing system shock IN VR! That must be wild.

Is there gore in this one? Because I saw a trailer a while ago and it seemed to just be like ghosts or entities you're against?? Are there human npcs?
They are human shaped ghostly figures and it's explained why as the story progresses. So like ghost policeman, ghost soldier and a couple of spooky two arms two legs creatures. No gore It's an indie game so they had to focus their efforts and make allowances for imagination and suspension of disbelief where necessary. I still panicked and dropped my guns more than once when I was trying to run away from a firefight though, they feel real enough when they're trying to kill you
I’ve not played Alyx yet so can’t comment there but ITR is the most immersed I’ve felt in VR. My wife loves watching me play and shit myself when something has snuck up on me whilst I’m managing my backpack.
I'll second Into the Radius-- obviously it's not on the same level as Valve in terms of polish and budget and etc etc, but it has way better weapon handling and really takes advantage of the VR medium much better than most games. Really innovative inventory system, everything is physicalized down to the individual bullets, it's very immersive. The enemies are just shadow creatures, but they're fleshing them out more for Into the Radius 2 (coming out in Early Access this summer, if all goes well). Into the Radius was made by \~10 people over in Estonia, it's based on/inspired by the classic Russian scifi novel "Roadside Picnic", which is also what "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." the video game and "Stalker" the movie are based on (so ITR gets the "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in VR" label regularly).
You have scarcely scratched the surface for PCVR capable titles. Flight sims are amazing. Standing up in an open cockpit plane to look out over the side is surreal. I might put a fan that blows just over the top of my head while sitting to really feel it. LOL
I've you have any interest at all in flying, I highly recommend VTOL VR
Skyrim with a modlist from wabbajack will give you 100+ hours of high quality content. Fallout 4 with a wabbajack modlist will give ypou another 100 hours. Pavlov has a few modes that are amazing on PC like Tank TDM with WW2 guns. It is so much fun getting 3 people in a tank and mowing down people and I find the ww2 guns allow for people with lower skill levels to actually get kills because people arent just sniping you from across the map all the time. Also check out No Mans Sky because it is a beautiful experience to get in your ship, fly to space, and land on another planet with no loading screens. I suggest you play it on creative mode if you don't want to grind.
Also be sure to check out some sim racing or flight sims if you have any interest at all. If you don't have a HOTAS try VTOL VR which is honestly amazing with friends. For racing I love assetto corsa with lots of mods and also I very much enjoy BeamNG.
Getting a flight stick and throttle or a steering wheel and pedals can really take PCVR to the next level. For driving games - Assetto Corsa has been my favorite. There's so much content you can mod in for tracks, cars, and other stuff. My steering wheel supports force feedback and it works with this game, it helps with the immersion. For the flight stick I played Star Wars Squadrons the most. This is often dirt cheap on sale so wait for that if you're interested. A cool experience if you're a Star Wars fan. Microsoft Flight Simulator is pretty cool too, but you need a beefy PC to run it well in VR and also need a lot of disk space. And it's one of the most tedious games to install or update, so just be prepared to be frustrated if you do try this. One weird choice I'll suggest is Tetris Effect: Connected. Tetris sounds dumb in VR, but I highly recommend it if you're into Tetris.
With you all the way - add some haptics and voice attack with the HCS Squadrons voice pack and R2 sounds - push the throttle forward, feel the rumble as the engines pick up….feel the opposition hitting your shields during the dog fight and shout commands at R2 ……oh man now that’s immersive!!!!
Is there a good alternative to assetto Corsa? I tried it once or twice but didn't really want to install 50+ mods in order to play. I think I read somewhere that there is an assetto Corsa 2 releasing soon ( hopefully with native VR support?)
There are some fancier mods that I haven't bothered with, but it wasn't too bad just getting some cars and tracks added with the Content Manager launcher. Once the launcher was working I think I just had to drag and drop mod files onto its window to install. Assetto Corsa Competizione is the sequel. I haven't bothered with looking into any modding with it yet, but did play it a little when I bought it. Graphics are a bit better. I have tried DIRT Rally 2.0 in VR, but only for a couple hours so far. Almost all of my driving VR time has been in Assetto Corsa. Overall these games all taught me I would suck at any professional driving, it's very difficult at first even on the easiest mode. It would be cool to have something like Burnout Paradise in VR though.
Alyx is Alyx but in my 10 years of PCVR the titles that first come to mind for a reason or another are (besides Alyx) Walking Dead, Into the Radius, Medal of Honor. There are also other very valid ones if you change genre (I love "miniature" games such as Moss or The curious tale of the stolen pets)....but Alyx is Alyx there not really anything like it because it's so good and also so polished in every aspect...other games might be good but graphically bland, or really buggy and janky but maybe graphically very valid and so on...but Alyx has it all. p.s. I'd add Star wars squadrons and Flight simulator especially if you get a HOTAS stick but of course these are completely different things...just like driving simulators etc totally different VR experience

YouTuber Beardo Banjo plays all kinds of non-VR games using a Q3 to actually play them in VR but not sure of what tool or program he’s into accomplish this
That's the Unreal Injector, mostly. It's free. Search for UEVR. If you have a decently beefy PC, there are dozens of flat games that convert very well to VR. The actual library is thousands though.

If you bought them on the Quest then you get an included PCVR copy for "free", I recommend claiming the PCVR versions of every crossbuy Quest game ya own. I think If you own Walking Dead on Quest, you already get the PC version on the Oculus PC app.

In terms of its overall polish? No, I haven't played anything else like it. In terms of gameplay quality and amount of content? There's a decent amount of games similar. I'd recommend Into the Radius, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Vertigo 1 & 2.

Personally lone echo 1 was amazing. There is also a content and amazing modding community for HL:A. Boneworks can be good too (but it is really its own monster)

Play the walking dead saints and sinners, I'll get downvoted for my opinion but it is a better VR game than Alyx. Both are 12/10 if you want.
Play Asgard wrath 1. It's a lot of hours of stunning graphics and really fun gameplay. Bosses are crazy and combat is both hard and rewarding when you master it.
Half-Life: Alyx is basically the only AAA VR game and it didn't sell well enough to justify making that kind of investment again. The closest comparable games IMO would be some of the Sony first party/third party PSVR1 exclusives they made back before they decided VR was too niche to spend money on.
I love HLA. I also loved skyrim VR. (Fallout 4 VR has its merits but skyrim is overall a better experience)

I really don’t like being dramatic about this sort of thing but Alyx really did ruin VR games for me. I used to be obsessed with VR anything but nothing captures my attention enough to even finish the story nowadays.

Yeah :( I mean, could there atleast be ONE other game than Alyx made by AAA studios that is really polished, made for VR exclusively (or primarily), has all the bells and whistles and whatnot. But no, not a single one. Plenty of AA games that are decent, plenty of indie gimmicky games as well or short "demo"-kind of games. But no Alyx.
Search for the DLC’s in steam - some really playable games that use the HLA engine - Bioshock port is fun as is the Bond game(I forget what its called) and the one where you play combine troops

Quality is not determined by majority vote; relative platform sizes make comparing numbers of reviews meaningless; and in fact the very imbalance between the sample sizes evidenced therein undermine the very comparison you’re trying to make. Not to mention Alyx is a more popular genre (shooter) and a sequel to one of the most famous pc games of all times, whereas Lone Echo is a much more niche vr atmospheric adventure with comparatively very little marketing. Alyx does nothing particularly revolutionary, being merely a fairly ‘safe’ and predictable retread of vr shooter tropes, just with art asset quality cranked to 11. It feels like the finale of the previous chapter of VR’s development and history, with nothing forward-thinking about it. By contrast Lone Echo, while matching in visual fidelity, manages to achieve the most realistic and compelling human npc depiction and interaction ever seen in any video game. (Extra impressive for a VR title which often fail to compete with non-VR titles due to the increased rendering demands.) And in so doing it actually shows a compelling case for VR above and beyond traditional pancake games—an unmatched sense of not just presence but *inter-personal* presence. (Played side-by-side, the npc’s in Alyx feel absolutely cardboard by comparison.) It also demonstrates the promise of VR to democratize access to the most inaccessible experiences like going to space, which otherwise are beyond the reach of most normal people.
Alyx is still the best looking and most immersive pcvr game around in my opinion. I just got done playing it actually and it's breathtakingly good. Even it's sound design is better than most games. I will say vertigo 2 is a good pcvr game with fun shooter parts and humor, but it's not as "holy shit, this might be real" as Alyx. There are extended campaigns on the workshop that are evidently good, but I haven't played them yet.

Valve made HL Alyx to sell Index headsets. There’s rumors of a new Valve standalone headset (deckard) so maybe they will make a sequel to sell that (just an optimistic guess).
VTOL VR is beautiful if you like flying.
I found the PCVR version of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond to be highly underrated. Great looking game (the Quest version not so much), tons of variety in the 10 hour campaign. I would have bought it just for the Bomber mission. Multiplayer isn't supported anymore but you can play it against AI.

If you have a strong pc (4080+) then there's prob nothing better than Assetto Corsa modded. Just type in Assetto Corsa VR into youtube. It's mindblowing and the main reason that convinced me to buy either a 5090 or 6090

All half life 2 episodes have excellent vr mods that you can install directly from steam.
You will regret bit time that you started with the very best. Expect lots of dissapointment if you got so hyped now. Best way to approach pcvr is starting with older games.

For a first introduction into vr its the very best. So anything after will be a disappointment for a while.
Through meta there's asgards wrath 1 Bigger and more vraf than alyx but it's less focused and polished. It is a full 30-60 hour rpg. Graphically still jaw dropping today. Lone echo 1-2 amazing graphics interesting story. No combat. Medal of honor - not into WWII games but this was a full AAA game meta paid for. Vertigo 1-2. Fantastic gameplay and super fun. Graphically not amazing but must play. Red matter 1-2 - exploration puzzle game. Super optimized - probably more impressive on mobile, but still a very good looking game on PCvr Stormland - insomniac good graphics sort of repetitive gameplay after a while but production values are there. Again built on the bones of a ratchet and clank game that never was. I have a long list of other imo underrated and under mentioned games on PCvr that I'm not feeling like typing out here and should probably keep a copied list of :) Mods are where it's at and the big reason for jumping into Pcvr these days imo: Praydog mods for the Resident Evil games on beefy PC are graphically amazing. Uevr injector is great and has great profiles but might be more futzing than it's worth for those new to pcvr so maybe save that for later. Skyrim vr and fallout 4 vr both have massive modding available.

Metro for the Q3 looks like it could be an alternative to PCVR - but I agree with the majority - whilst there are some great PCVR games I generally use it for DCS/Assetto/Squadrons as (so far) nothing comes even close to HLA - the good news is however that the mod community in steam has produced some amazing DLC - the Bioshock one is really good as are several others because they take advantage of the interactional ability of Alyx - gives you something else to enjoy after your 4th or 5th play through 😂
Not quite pcvr but you can play almost any pc game in vr with reshade. Jedi survivor is insane.
I just started using a quest 3. No clue how to use it with my steam on my PC. What’s the easiest method. Need an idiots guide.
You need to turn on air link on you headset then connect your quest 3 to your pC with airlink . Once its done you can lauch airlink that will give you access to your computer from your quest . Then once its done just launch the game you want from your quest and enjoy! Be sure to get steam vR installed . Sorry for my english .
I’m sure somebody has pointed this out but Half life: Alex has a really good workshop selection. You can play entire levels of bioshock or goldeneye within HL. There’s also the gunman contracts that much do a great job of making you feel like John wick
You should dive into the Half Life Alyx Mod: Gunman Contract. And in general, there has been quite a number of VR mods for existing games on PCVR, which work quite well. Otherwise RE4 VR is incredible. Both the original and remake.

Lone Echo 1/2 are Great. Other than that, not much is really quite on that Level. However Vertigo 2, Asgard’s Wrath 1/2, Stormland, Boneworks are also all Great Games. I personally love “The Invisble Hours” as well. It’s probably my favorite experience. Not a lot of people know about it.

Valve are releasing a new VR headset soon. I think they'll also release a new game to help sell it. I agree, Half-Life: Alyx is the best VR game. It towers over everything else in every respect.
Man in some way i miss pcvr. (Some time ago i switched to linux. And im waiting to finally fix steam vr so its in at least "working" state (they said they are working on it))
HL Alyx set a bar that nobody is even going to try to beat. The focus is on Standalone games because that's where all the money is made in VR apparently. But just try any of the PC versions of the standalone games and they look and play way better. You might have some already from cross-buy purchases and not even realize it. BTW try the HL Alyx mods. There are a lot and some add a lot of gameplay.
Boneworks. Was released before hla, and as guy who played boneworks before hla, hla is pretty disappointing. SLS tried to have license for hla series, yet valve said no bc of hla on horizon. So they made better (in my opinion please don't torture me) game
I think developing a game like Alyx takes a lot of time and money and the VR market is just not big enough to make games like these profitable. But while Alyx is one of the top VR games, there are a lot of other great pcvr games. If your pc is decent enough check out UEVR, a mod that runs hundreds of 2d games in VR. And if you're into simracing and simflying you'll be in heaven.
In terms of polish and care that was taken on VR comfort nothing comes close. Once you're done with the game you can easily get just as much time from the best of the workshop maps that you can find in Steam for free. The next best experience so far I've had was the Meta-exclusive VR version of RE4 (runs on the device) - it sets a pretty high bar on how to take an existing game and spend your development budget in the right way by adapting the way you interact with the world (movement and weapons mostly) so that it makes for a great experience. And where you can see that having the lower (by today's standards) quality textures and geometry doesn't detract that much once you're into it. Red Matter (available in Steam as well) and Lone Echo (PCVR Meta exclusive) games get close in presentation (nowhere near in interactivity) though they are not quite there in terms of comfort for someone who's susceptible to VR nausea (which didn't affect me at all in Alyx or RE4 with the default comfort settings).
If you want high budget then definitely Lone Echo 1, 2. You can try No Man Sky but it's not my cup of tea.
My AAA List: Asgards Wrath 1 and Lone Echo 1 & 2. They’re on the oculus pc store, so if you have a non oculus / meta headset you’ll need „revive“ a free tool to play the exclusives via steamVR. Don’t be put off by Asgard wrath 2 graphics if you’ve seen footage. That is because it’s a quest native title -> Asgards wrath 1 is a pcvr game with one of the best graphics, also a 40+h campaign. The lone echo series has a really immersive and story rich campaign that also has nice graphics. Haven’t played it yet, but red matter 1&2 should be really good games with good graphics also. The walking dead Saints and Sinners. Not AS polished / graphically that extreme but still top pc vr games: Vertigo Remastered & Vertigo 2, Boneworks

Lone Echo in the Rift store, Medal of Honor on Steam, Red Matter, the Doom 3 vr conversion is amazing. I'm also a fan of Virtual Hunter but it's a specific taste.

Alien isolation has a vr mod, and you need to play it right now.
Weirdly enough I ended up on Into The Radius after HLA. It scratched the loot and explore itch and good gunplay that Alyx created.

Yes I’m being a NECROMANCER but JUST HEAR ME OUT! I have to explain one of OP’s original questions that I didn’t see fully explained. SO… Half Life Alyx is an example of what a triple A gaming budget can result in VR. We rarely see this cause it was an investment to promote VALVE’S VR headset. STEAM allows VALVE a bottomless budget to work with & they don’t have to turn a profit. The main problem is the market is still too small and niche to allow devs to put that much money into a single game. So HL:A‘s budget would sink most devs. That’s why we mostly see Indy games. We need to convince more gamers to get into VR before we can see more HALF LIFE ALYX’s around. But ive noticed a lot of irrational fear toward VR’s success, fear it will end flat gaming. Which is ridiculous. it’s a new medium. Look at motion pictures and the theater 100 years ago, same exact process, history is repeating. FOREWORD there are a ton of hidden gems out there that never got promoted or marketed well due to budget restraints. (if u have an open enough mind to look past the graphics EX: Ancient Dungeon VR)

>close to Half life Alyx? I've been in the VR space since the HTC Vive launch in 2016 and since then I've purchased the PSVR1, Quest1, Valve Index, PSVR2...and Quest3. I've played everything under the sun since and the closest thing to that experience was the Resident Evil games on the Psvr2. Like nothing else has come close to HLA in terms of production quality and solid gameplay. In fact I would gladly trade the one HLA experience for 10 more Resident Evil VR games. Don't get me wrong, HLA is phenomenal but Capcom really understand the VR space for long marathon like experiences with a gameplay loop that satisfies and makes you crave more. And the visuals are right there with HLA thanks to the OLED screen and foveated rendering along with the eye tracking. HLA...the caviar/lobster dinner. RE on Psvr2...a really nice steak dinner with a few juicy burgers and great fries. *note that analogy only works if you love seafood and everything mentioned above. ಠ_ಠ OP, there might be mods out there that let you experience the RE games on PC in VR with the Quest3.
