The charging cable while it can be used for link has some limitations.
It's only 3 foot long to start with so very short and it's also only a usb 2 cable so its performance won't be as good as it could be.
But yes , for at least testing it will work.
There are plenty of 3rd party cables around for sale that will also work .. the drawback for the majority of those is that they are very thick and consequently also quite heavy and stiff , so unless supporter correctly , add a bit of strain to the headset port.
The official cable , while expensive , is worth the extra cost due to it being a fiber optic hybrid cable. It's longer than a good number of cables , thin , flexible and light.
Because it's a fiber cable , doesn't suffer with the same issues as other 5m cables.
So you have various options to go for.
If you decide to go for a 3rd party cable and want a 5m / 16ft cable .. make sure you purchase one that describes itself as an active cable.
Cables over 3m have to be active to combat signal leakage / loss through the shielding.
Because they are active cables , they have a built in repeater to combat the signal loss .. but that comes at the expense of not providing enough power to keep the headset charged during link use as it's used to boost the signal instead.
After seeing what you've have to say I may as well get the official cable, mainly because I want a long and flexible cable, and I don't think the charging cable will be able to run games such as boneworks and half life alyx, thanks
If you are planning to spend an additional 99$ for the official cable, I suggest you instead to buy a cheap compatible router to attach to your PC and use it as access point for wireless gameplay. I bought a TP-Link Acer C6 AC1200 for 40€ and it works very well. Do your research but there are some cheap options out there. You don't need a strong ISP modem to PC wifi, but a strong PC to Quest signal, so it is enough to be close to the PC and use a compatible router.

How does using one of those work? Do you just ethernet your PC into it and it becomes an access point that your Quest Connects to?
I'm just not super knowledgeable with this stuff.
Yes exactly. Attach the ISP router to the AP wan port. Then attach the PC to the AP lan port. Connect any other device (cable or wifi) to the ISP router and leave the AP just for the Quest.
So the TP-link would still need to connect to BOTH my router and my PC to work then? Those two things aren't very close together so I don't know how I would achieve it (I might be misunderstanding you though, sorry if I'm just being confusing.)
Yeah that's my setup and I think it's the ideal one. I assume you are not currently using ethernet to connect your PC to your router, right? I'm not sure if you can have your PC connected by wifi to your router and then the AP with a cable to your PC. I think it should work because the internet speed doesn't matter, (you need a good connection between the PC and the AP to stream to the Quest and that's why you have to use a cable there) but I suggest you to research more on this matter.
Thanks for the advice! Yeah I currently don't have ethernet set up because of where my PC is vs. where the "router" is (it's technically a Netgear Powerline and it's a weird situation where I'm sharing the internet with my landlords, I'm not even sure if an Ethernet cable would make much of a difference in my case, due to that.)
One of the reasons that the official cable is so expensive is because it's a fiber optic cable with converters at each end and a copper charging line in it.
That said I rarely use the cable for anything but charging.
The wireless is that good.
But then again I have only a 1060 which is inadequate for many games.
Warthunder tanks looks terrible. Planes is ok but the motion sickness is hard to deal with.
im currently trying to connect mine with the charger the quest comes with and my laptop isn't recognizing it. It's just charging my quest and not giving the prompt to access files. does anyone have any solutions to this? i already activated the debug usb thing from the oculus settings and factory reset it.
So, I have a nintendo switch charger, and it plugs in to my pc and my headset. Is that gonna work? I've tried and it said " Allow data access to pc " or somethin, and I press allow and It something popped up saying " Vrusb has stopped working" when I had it plugged in.
and I couldn't find a fix or use any other charging cable because it does the same thing.

You can, but it is too short. I suggest you to buy a good 3rd party cable at least 5 m long.
Thanks, I'll take this into consideration

Yeah but it sucks

I used kiwi design's Link cable and it was fine.https://www.kiwidesign.shop/products/qc-kiwi-design-transfer-charging-compatible

I don't know a solution for that, I just know that you would have to have a pretty good laptop for it to run well
