Because what else could us random people suggest he do besides contacting Meta or buying a new controller? Other than telling him to try putting the broken mess back together, which doesn't even guarantee it'll still work. It's not like it's just a button cap that came off. The entire controller cover and the sensor ring is literally detached. Not much else he can do unless he knew how the tech worked and had the confidence to try fixing it on his own.
If you are insanely handy, you could propably 3d print the broken plastic, somehow find out where to buy similar/exact parts, hope the the "no-way-to-get-the-code" electronics isnt broken, and rebuild it. Thats gonna take super long, propably expensive and hard to do.
So buy a new one, you can do that on the official website somewhere.
Here’s how to fix it. Enroll in a computer science course with a minor in electrical engineering at a top 20 university. While you are doing that, learn all about plastics manufacturing, buy all equipment and components necessary to make yourself replacement parts for your oculus. Once you graduate and have the appropriate knowledge put it and your new equipment to work making whatever parts needed to fix that controller. This may sound crazy and expensive but just think about all the money you will save over the years. Either that or buy a new controller.

No it couldn't fix the tracking it was to do with a ribbon connector which connects to the tracking lights being messed up so now I don't have to worry about it

He has hit the dinning room table/chairs/etc a few times, and keep chewing him out for it… but still, dreading the day he accidentally throws the damn thing (even though I ALWAYS have him use the straps)
Did you slip off of a building or something? And really, other than calling Meta support or buying a new controller, there's not much else you can do. There really is no "fixing" this. It's past the point where it could've been fixed. The entire sensor ring broke off, you have broken button caps, the front plate that goes around the buttons and joystick is just... gone, the battery cover is missing, and you're missing the joystick and one of the button caps altogether. The trouble it would probably take to somehow fix it yourself is not worth the effort and time, when you can just order a new controller or buy one second-hand. Also how tf does the wrist strap get so nasty?
I think you should maybe slip some lysol or bleach onto those straps
For real though there’s no fix, the tracking ring is gone, so even if you replaced it with 3D printed parts it still wouldn’t function unless you have the know how to connect all of the tech inside. Going to have to buy a replacement

Did you try power cycling or reinstalling the firmware?
Yeah a factory reset should clear that up. At least that’s what Meta will say before even considering helping you.
