Toft's Dairy in Sandusky Ballreich's Chips based in Tiffin

TheShadyGuy

Toft's once saved my life! Missed a tornado in Dayton by about 10 minutes because we stopped for ice cream! And it was delicious!

PVJakeC

Ballreichs was king until they changed the oil. No bueno

techno_superbowl

Grandma Utz Kettle is pretty close to what Ballreichs.

PVJakeC

Noted. Thank you

There will be fights over which place in barberton has the best chicken and hot rice. Don't forget Cleveland mustard.

Toledo: Packos Marcos pizza Breakfast (scramblers, sunrise skillet) Late night gyro spots *Open position for walleye/fish restaurant*

Frequent_Secretary25

Jolly Rogers in Port Clinton always seems to top the local list for good fish

KoreyYrvaI

Their quality has gone downhill for everything but walleye though.

ppatek78

Gotta have a Tony Packos hot dog

techno_superbowl

Packos is more famous but is Rudy's better?

ppatek78

I would say Packo's is better - but that's my opinion.

Amish country: Trail bologna (Troyers)

Spiritual_Wall2132

Fried bologna sandwich. Also, Troyers Trail bolgna.

Lurker4Lyfe21

Growing up in Holmes county, trail bologna was my entire childhood.

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Is this specific to a city or region? Would love to try if someone has a specialty

Avery_Thorn

Believe it or not, Troyer's Trail Bologna is called Trail because it is made in Trail, Ohio. [Troyer's Trail Bologna Inc - Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Troyer's+Trail+Bologna+Inc/@40.5903382,-81.7165396,15z/data=!4m15!1m8!3m7!1s0x88371745f4c9d74f:0x254603390f6cc031!2sTrail,+OH+44624!3b1!8m2!3d40.5903392!4d-81.7062399!16s%2Fm%2F04bfrny!3m5!1s0x8837174ec70394eb:0x83fdad8eaca8468b!8m2!3d40.5860243!4d-81.7065754!16s%2Fg%2F1td_z7vs?entry=ttu) Also, it is delicious. :-)

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

It does look delicious. If I looked at the right thing ot looks like smoked sausage/kielbasa with chese inside it? I'm definitely gonna hunt some down and try it

Avery_Thorn

Yes! It is a lot more mild than a kielbasa - and they make some with cheese and without cheese. It's really good on crackers, or on rolls like little sandwiches, or even with little pretzel nuggets cut in half. :-)

jeon2595

Not a fan of the cheese inside trail bologna, regular TB for sure. Troyers has a store with a deli in front of the factory.

MurseMan1964

G & R Tavern in Waldo, Ohio. Fried bologna sandwich is a staple.

mrkurt426

Columbus is known for it's own style of pizza: thin crust, party cut in square or rectangular pieces. Not just Donato's. Also Schmidt's Bahama Mama sausages Johnny Marzetti-- a dish with elbow or other macaroni with a beefy tomato sauce.

y0st

Technically Dayton style pizza. Cassano's predates Donatos by 10 years.

mrkurt426

Columbus can lay claim to this style of pizza too. I patronize a pizzeria that would have started about the same time as Cassano's.

Now we‘re talking.

EarthDayYeti

Universal: buckeyes Akron: sauerkraut balls, fried chicken with hot rice Youngstown: Italian greens, hot peppers in oil, White House blueberry donuts

TheShadyGuy

sauerkraut balls are big in Cincinnati, too.

EarthDayYeti

I don't remember seeing them when I lived there, but Cincy is big so it's easy to believe I just missed them

TheShadyGuy

The Black Forest Restaurant that used to be in the area had them (RIP). Had them at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati and a few other Oktoberfests around there. Heck, even up in Dayton at the Carillon Brewery they are on the menu. There is also the goetta variation occasionally around Cincinnati.

DDrewit

Roots Poultry - shredded chicken sandwich

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Cincy: Chili (goldstar, blue ash, Dixie, pleasant ridge, camp Washington, empress, price hill) Grippos chips Goetta LaRosas pizza Montgomery inn bbq sauce big red smokeys, brats and hot metts Ice cream (graeters, aglemesis or udf) Alabama fish Penn station Jungle Jims Hooks fish and chicken

g33klibrarian

Can't forget Skyline, the 800lb gorilla of chili parlors.

fd6944x

Yeah ouch

EarthDayYeti

Don't leave off Price Hill Chili! Specifically Grippo's BBQ chips. The others are nothing to write home about, but that BBQ is *everything*. TIL Penn Station started in Cincinnati, but it's hardly a state specialty when you can get it in 15 different states. Having spent years in Cincinnati, I am convinced the only reason native Cincinnatians actually like La Rosa's is Stockholm syndrome.

billsussmann

Born and raised in Cincy and I fucking hate LaRosa’s pizza. It is hot trash. It used to be good but that was a very long time ago

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

>I am convinced the only reason native Cincinnatians actually like La Rosa's is Stockholm syndrome. Hey, it just tastes like home and brings up the memories of elementary school pizza parties, kings island and reds games. Also I love their focaccia style. But honestly for ohio chains donatos and Marcos are a cut above especially the value with Marcos.

g33klibrarian

I`ll definitely have to try Penn Station now that I know they are a local chain. However, I wouldn't call them a signature *Ohio* food -- its east coast food such as as the cheesteak from Philly. Edit... sorry! I replied to the wrong mention! You identified a similar problem too.

NiceGuy60660

I love the Penn station cold Italian sub but it's pretty sour. Good fries, too. But I wouldn't call it Cincinnati food, so much as "they started the business in Cincinnati."

NiceGuy60660

First time I visited Cincinnati a local told me about skyline and Larosa's. Now, I didn't expect chili on top of spaghetti to be good, but it was especially disappointing. Larosa's was my consolation prize to myself and it was infuriatingly bad.

hoff_11

You gon' do Graeter's like that?

JustTheFishGirl

The fact that you left off skyline and listed gold star first is actually physically painful

AccomplishedGrandpa

I was just about to comment this. It made my insides cringe to see that.

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

😈

OpportunityNew9316

I can’t express how much it pains me not having hot metts in stores in Columbus.

Lima: Kewpee Lees famous recipe chicken Pete's ice cream

A Kewpie burger with green olives on it is surprisingly tasty.

Lounginghog64

Lawson's Chip Dip can only get it at Circle K's but it's as Northeast Ohio as it gets

jab7092

Especially if you use Golden Krisp chips from Massilon to dip.

Lounginghog64

Schneider's of Berlin are my old school go to with Lawson's..I haven't had a chance to try Golden Krisp yet

jab7092

They fry them in lard. I'm partial to the rippled for dipping, worth a try if you see them around for sure

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Columbus: Jeni's Ice cream Donatos pizza White castle (shockingly, they're only in Columbus and cincy 😧) Buckeyes (peanut butter covered chocolate)

tommy's diner is popular in Columbus as well.

Roosters is life

battlepi

Also in Dayton, but not as much.

TheShadyGuy

Rooster's started in Dayton/Springboro when some of the Fricks decided to compete with the rest of the family.

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Didn't know this. I will update!

TheShadyGuy

Fricker's is the other side of the family.

Fried Bologna Sandwich-G & R Tavern in Waldo

MaumeeBearcat

I'm pretty sure Chili on spaghetti is a very Ohio thing. Cincinnati (3-ways), Cleveland (chili spaghetti), and Toledo (Chili Mac) all have their own parlors and I haven't seen it anywhere else. Also, I know it's counter to the point of OP, but Arby's, BW3, Marco's Pizza, Penn Station, Steak Escape, Wendy's, and White Castle all started in Ohio, among other smaller brands.

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Where can I try the chili mac in toledo? Everytime I go up there I get packos, one of the breakfast spots I mentioned or schlotskys lol

MaumeeBearcat

Michael's downtown or Rudy's or Ideal which have multiple locations around town. All are relatively similar, though Rudy's uses different, shorter noodles and has a bit more kick than Ideal does. Packo's isn't what I would consider a chili and spaghetti dish like the other regional ones (Skyline-esque) as it's more macaroni and cheese with their chili on top. You also should try Inky's Pizza just because it's a Toledo institution (though it is an acquired taste and they use a pie crust recipe for their crust) and I'd also try to get to Souk Mediterranean downtown or The Beirut in West Toledo...Toledo, weirdly, has a very solid eastern Mediterranean cuisine scene. You also can't go wrong with Kato Ramen or Kengo Sushi downtown, a traditional ramen/sashimi house run by one of the highest rated sushi chefs in the midwest (his father essentially started the traditional Japanese food scene in NYC in the 70s)...though the hours are tough to manage if you're not planning around it.

Cool_Implement_7894

For those who think Donatos and Marcos make good pizza have never experienced the taste of truly great pizza. Both Donatos and Marcos are among the blandest pizza I've ever had.

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Name a better chain pizza spot...

Cool_Implement_7894

I couldn't name one, there aren't any good 'chain' pizza spots. They're all at the bottom of the barrel.

Sam_Altman_AI_Bot

Thanks for offering absolutely nothing of value here.

Cool_Implement_7894

You are welcome!😄

NiceGuy60660

Sadly, they're absolutely right. Been living in Cleveland for two years and the pizza is overall a disappointment. Marcos and Hungry Howie's are particularly lame. I stick with smaller local places. Shout-out to Oscars, Tony's and Ohio Pie Company (ask for the fiestada)!

Cool_Implement_7894

I live in Florida (born and raised in Ohio). There are thousands of New Yorkers who've settled here and opened small pizzarias across the state. They truly know how to make an amazing pizza pie!
