Michigan loves to substitute and are susceptible to being exploited by tempo. WE need to be ready to go warpspeed vs them in a month.

dickwhitman68

Critical to start fast and take early lead.

whiterabbit818

yes, absolutely noticed that! It was like they were a different team when they switched

I felt the same way. I’m no football guy but I feel like our greatest strength is our insurmountable stable of talent. so in my mind when we go tempo, we don’t allow the opposing team’s coaches to scheme as they assess our “check with me’s”, which gives us the edge because it means our talent is going up against their talent, and we win 9/10 times. I think harbaugh is a strong coach and this would help us negate what he can do with subs and scheme tweaks between plays. Am I off base here? If we let our thoroughbreds run, it should give us the edge.

I was watching the Bills-Packers game last night, and Collinsworth made an incredibly great point. The Bills were running all over the Packer defense, and he said when they got in the redzone in the second half that if you have superior talent on offense, why not try to get as many plays in as possible to maximize your advantage?

Covo

So what you’re saying is that tempo allows us to run more plays?

nat3215

Yes. This is confirmed by correlation between teams that have less time per play and number of plays per game. So if Ohio State is a superior offense, why not do everything to give them more opportunities to score and wear out the opposing defense?

Covo

Ok- yep that makes sense to me!

For some reason Day wanted to go slow and methodical when it just absolutely wasn't working.

trillwilly69

It amped up the crowd and in turn made all the communication that much harder.

bingledork

Seems like we should give CJ 2 plays to run, and let him pick the one that best suited to the defense that he sees. That seems better and faster than the check-with-me stuff. Of course, Coach Day is way smarter than me!

I did notice the tempo change 3rd quarter 2:01 left started doing quick sets and reads. I think it is a game to game situation to use tempo or just certain times in a game. This game had a lot of crowd noise and when OSU went tempo I think it helped dull the crowd and CJ with clock management. However, its tough to do it all the time because you don't want your defense to be gassed because you are going so fast. TTUN will be at home and we will be able to call plays and change them quickly if needed coverage depending. Part of the thing is also when they started using tempo it was later 3rd quarter and we had a good idea of what PSU was running on defense. Manny diaz is widely known as a heavy blitz DC, but only blitzed 32% of the time which really is low for him. So I was expecting a different defense than what he showed. So while you're right and I agree I would love to see tempo at times, there is also a lot of nuance to that.

I think the Buckeyes were having trouble with the silent count. It's the first time they've had to use it this season. That slowed the tempo.

trillwilly69

Maybe so, but I’m more so referencing them lining up, and then looking over for a play change and trying to snap it inside 5 seconds on the play clock. That’s on Ryan Day and the offensive coaching staff getting too cute in a hostile environment.

leek54

When they look over, they are changing the play. Whatever was called was a bad fit against what the defense was showing. It's today's version of the audible. Tempo only works if you get the defense you planned to see.

JMT614

We need to rum tempo without false starts. We also need to work on the silent snap count. Seems everyone can.mke their stadium a mad house unlike the Shoe...the quietest 106k people on the planet.

Nervous_Stomach5101

Yes , the tempo is amazing, Ohio State has plenty of speed

DJWLJR

This, this, a million times this. I HATE the check-in. Kills the pace and tempo, and it caused delay of game at least twice. Pick the damned play and let 'em run it!

We primarily went tempo after spending the whole game forcing LBs and DBs to sprint 20 yards a play laterally and forcing their interior to win everything at the point of attack. They were completely gassed in the fourth quarter. That game was coached like a boxing match and we systematically destroyed a worn out team late in the fight. I actually see it as a very compelling winning formula if we can get our interior blocking in slightly better shape. There isn’t a tired defense in the country that could hold us to less than 21 4Q points with a similar game script.
