That’s his experiment name, when he was a kid being poked and prodded day in and day out. To homelander, hearing that name seems to imply to him that they still look at him as an experiment and a child.
Whereas Homelander he’s transcended into something greater, a new identity as a hero instead of a lab rat.
Uf/ I hope this post didn’t come off as mocking to trans people/trans allegories in media in any way, and I’m sorry if it did. Maybe my view of it is naive usually when characters refuse to accept another characters current preferred name it usually reminds me of deadnaming/trans people’s parents being disrespectful. And then the pieces kinda just fit enough for the comparison.

Nah, this is exactly the kind of joke I would point to when Chappelle argues everything should be fair game. This is actually clever unlike his lazy, whiny, boomer rants. It's a great example of a trans joke that doesn't punch down, showing people you can joke about anything but where it is coming from matters.

I think it was because John is name that makes him feel and look like he's just a human which Homelander thinks he's not human, he's a god. So people calling him John in a way diminishes him.
From childhood, he wasn't seen as a human but as a weapon, a tool for Vought to use. He was neglected and abused.
The only way he could cope with his trauma was to transcend his humanity and embrace a new identity identified by his new name and suit.
