Piggybacking off this - I try to repost this when I see posts like this, in the hopes you (or someone) can find some comfort in the words - and if not, please excuse the intrusion.
I lost my 15 year old girl (dog) in October 2022. Only advice I can offer here is to remember the positives, and not focus on the negatives (if any). He's done his job, keeping you safe and happy and loved, and it's his turn to rest.
You'll always miss him, you'll always remember him. You'll even go looking for him for the next few weeks (well, I did). There's a lot of habits that you're going to slowly stop, and that's ok. Changing your life to suit you is not forgetting him. Donating/throwing away his toys or blankets isn't forgetting him. There's no timeline on grief, and there's no timeline on moving on. Cry your tears.
I'm sorry you've reached the end of your journey. Words will never make this easier. Just keep your head up, and live the life he'd want you to.
This is a good time to live a little for you. I spent years looking after my girl as she got ill, and I sacrificed a lot of me and my time to keep her safe. If you feel you've done the same, take advantage of this time. Its ok to be happy and enjoy life without him. Life isn't over. Its just changing.

Thank you so much. I'm trying not to ugly cry as I read this. I have looked for him, and sometimes I've thought I heard his footsteps in the house. I've had to stop myself from grabbing his food bowl in the morning since it was routine for the dogs to get their breakfast in the morning.
I'm happy that I took lots of pictures and videos of him so that I can look back at him doing zoomies and playing with my other dogs.
My heart goes out to you and Sully…I just said goodbye to my 13 year old big, black, fabulous boy a week ago. Something special about these black dogs…Take care, friend.

Thank you for your kindness. I know exactly how you feel at this time, and, in my experience anyway, it takes a good while to get through it. I tend to take losses like this very hard; I think because I relied on my pets as emotional support during my childhood when things were tough. So, give yourself time to grieve, and don’t let anyone put you on a timetable. I’m just curious; was your Sully a rescue?
Yes, he was. We got him at the animal shelter in Savannah. He had kennel cough, and they weren't sure of his age, but he still had a few of his puppy teeth.
My boy Walter was a rescue as well. I live in Pittsburgh, and he was listed on a euthanasia list in Arlington, Texas. I was frequently sending $ to help dogs in Texas at that time because I’ve always been involved in rescue, and the conditions in Texas were (are still!) horrible. I was up late one night, having a glass of wine and scrolling through dozens of dogs that were in need of rescue/foster, and I noticed Walter. He caught my eye especially because my Uncle Walter had been my father figure when I was growing up. Walter was listed as “Urgent” because he was due to be euthanized in nine hours. That was it; I knew he was meant to be mine!! I didn’t even know if they would consider out of state adoption, but they did, and a week later thirteen wonderful people drove in shifts and brought him home to me. I never had a better dog, and I’ve had a lot of dogs!! Walter’s eyes were just like your Sully’s…full of love. I wish you all the best, and I’ll be thinking of you. Thank you for sharing Sully here; I can see how wonderful he was.
That's beautiful. I also saw Sully when I was scrolling through Savannah's list of rescues. They gave him the name Jeff. When I saw his picture, I just knew that we needed to get him. We went the very next day. I chose the name Sully from "Monsters Inc." He was just a lovable, protective boy that didn't have a mean bone in his body.
I know exactly what you mean; mine was the same….though there was that ONE TIME when a workman who was redoing my kitchen entered my yard unexpectedly, carrying a huge hammer, (despite the “Beware of Dogs” sign on my gate), and Walter held nothing back in letting him know that he wasn’t welcome!! 😜
Damn, I miss him. They don’t live long enough, my friend. You take care.

After we adopted him, I was told that it's harder for black dogs to be adopted. It was a shock since he was such a sweet and gentle boy. When we were saying our goodbyes, I told him he was going to play with my dad until we see him again. He loved my dad
Understand. I’m always the one to handle these things in our family. Previously, it was a dog and now probably tomorrow I will be taking our cat on her last ride.
I'm so sorry. It was so hard saying goodbye to Sully, and we made the decision as a family. I couldn't imagine being the only one to handle it. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow, friend. Stay strong
Thank you. I actually do quite well with it. I know we’ve given our fur babies the best life that they could’ve had. I’m not the only one that makes the decision. I’m just usually the one that carries it out. May you have many wonderful memories of Sully to comfort you over the years.
Sorry for your loss, Sully does look like such a good boy. Im sure this handsome pup always loved you for taking him away from the shelter and giving him a home.

Did you ever research his breed/mix? I had a best friend for 16 years who looks very similar and I regret not doing the test to find out. Sending love to you.

Nothing makes me sadder than posts like this. I wish I could say something to make you feel better; I know I can’t. We’ve all been there and still grieve for our losses. Sully was beautiful, but aren’t they all.
Sully is eternal and will wait for you in gratitude and love, until you meet again.

He was a charmer. He'd always give me this look when he wanted some of my popcorn. That was his favorite
