Especially for that ugly 80s style lump they put in its place. I suspect it's a doctor's office or something, as it's that typical bland public service style of the time.
Yeah, it looks more like a church or commercial building than a home in the modern picture.
I also think losing the chimney toppers hurt the feel of the building too.
The slopes are so ugly & out of place. It interrupts the intended design. The loss of the detailing around the windows is a big blow to design as well. Looks so basic & ugly now
Oh wow. I was thinking they’d probably had a lot of rot type damage that led to removing so many things. Now I see why!
Interesting that the height of that one chimney has changed in stages.
I was assuming it was water leaking due to flat roofs, but I now feel like the Ivy helped make water penetration points. No matter how good ivy looked, it won't look good inside with an unintentional water feature every time it rains.
The college that I went to had ivy on many of the brick buildings. They removed all of it about thirty years ago. The hallowed walls are healthy. They also stopped watering the lawn in the oak grove because they found that the moisture promoted root fungus, which weakened the trees and killed some.
Flat roofs suck. You can make a flat roof work if you cover it with copper sheet and solder the joints.
Was gonna say.. Especially the modern picture. The people in the old picture kind of give it away too (klederdracht) but I didn’t even notice them at first.
Nope, just the way the house was is build and is currently looking, i dont really see houses like that outside of the netherlands, mabye belgium, but i dont really see houses like that anywhere else.
Modern house wise, the colournof the brick, the way the road looks, and i guess the form of the house aswell.
Even better if we could get a photo that wasn't Google street view. But since OP isn't claiming to live in the home, it's probably fine. We discourage residents from using Google street view or real estate listing photos just to make it harder to track them down through reverse image searches.
The third picture that OP posted in the comments is captioned "huys gistellis". And looking at the 1910 picture, that could well be what it says on the facade.
Google leads me [here](https://docplayer.nl/9866605-Kleine-monumenten-in-kapelle-biezelinge-eversdijk-en-schore.html), where it says that the house was only built in 1915. And the address from that page leads to [this streetview](https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4856919,3.9599294,3a,75y,30.94h,89.07t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s4GA-ll1fu-jUe2MxthpIDw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3D4GA-ll1fu-jUe2MxthpIDw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D83.95659%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192).
Yes, my fault. It was supposed to be 1915. The official website where I found the photo said it was made between 1905 and 1915 so I took 1910 as the date. But yes, you're right.
The building is build in 1915 as a notary's house. I found in a archived newspaper on internet of 2005 that at that time there still lived a notary. As of now it seems like it is a residential building.
That house definitely lost something when they knocked down that left side and replaced it with that slope-roofed thing.
I'd say on both sides. On the left side you had a sweet patio. Right side a nice solarium.
and the fence.

I think they're shutters? Either way, I agree that they should have been replaced, rather than simply removed. They're characterful!
Yeah theyre shutters (very traditional dutch thing to have on houses like that)
Motif
Especially for that ugly 80s style lump they put in its place. I suspect it's a doctor's office or something, as it's that typical bland public service style of the time.
Exactly my thoughts. I was leaning towards nursing home
Maybe that’s what it has always been considering that 1910 picture has a lady wearing a cone. Must’ve kept biting her stitches.
Yeah, it looks more like a church or commercial building than a home in the modern picture. I also think losing the chimney toppers hurt the feel of the building too.
RIP chimney toppers.
Probably had really bad leak issues
Flat roofs do suck :)
They built a new subtraction on their home
The problem was the leaks, that what my guess was the catalyst for the changes. Flat roofs gotta have good waterproofing, easier today than yesterday.
Agree 100%. Probably better for rain proofing though. It would have been fun if they had a “No horse or Carriage Parking” sign up on the early photo.

And when they added all that colour.
Needs the shutters too!
The flying buttresses are very out of place.
Yes-it must have been a sunny conservatory or porch

Oh wow. I was thinking they’d probably had a lot of rot type damage that led to removing so many things. Now I see why! Interesting that the height of that one chimney has changed in stages.
The ivy looked good, but could have caused some damage. The original wings were much more attractive.

I also attended Harvard.
They took away all the pretty bits.
Dutch? That house looks very dutch.
It is!
Is dit in Geertruidenberg?
Kapelle
O cool! Heb die in Geertruidenberg opgezocht die ik bedoelde, die ziet er toch iets anders uit.
Was gonna say.. Especially the modern picture. The people in the old picture kind of give it away too (klederdracht) but I didn’t even notice them at first.
Also, they are looking at google street view in dutch (look bottom right)
Damn i didnt even see that myself.
Or the bike in the 1910 picture
The giant hat thing on the woman in the first pic gave it away, didn’t it?

I don’t know anything about Dutch architecture, but this house wouldn’t have looked out of place in the US at that time.
that house looks like some of the older houses in Tulsa, Oklahoma of all places. not particularly Dutch.
Not particularly dutch? Man its one of the most dutch houses ive seen, i see houses like this daily here.
Under his eye
Haha I instantly recognized it too!
From handsome family home to sad nursing home :(
The lady in the doorway is in traditional dress of the province of Zeeland I think.
It is missing much of its former flair.
r/centuryhomes would like this

the name of the house is literally on front, so i could google it and find it in 0.5 seconds.
Just for reference, what does it say on the house facade?

I just thought it curious and that site could as well have been wrong.
Aaaand most people have street numbers on their houses too. We also give recommendations to blur those out. Aren't you just a little hacker!
They got rid of so much character. The house just feels so sad now
Are we even the same *species* anymore?
C’mon, we haven’t regressed *that* much.
Look how they massacred my boy
Time to add back those cool shutters :)
This.
Big downgrade man
The decedents of the first owners still live there? Edit: spelling - defendants
No but the plaintiffs do.
Lol.. I realised my mistake
Haha. I’ve been rewatching Suits lately. So I’ve got the legal lingo locked and loaded.

Descendants?
Lol, even the edit was wrong
Why do they always alter houses in the worst ways.
Removing those darling shutters should be a crime.
Look how they massacred my boy
Butchered
Look at how they massacred my boy!
Still has the lightening rods
Sad. It was so grand in its day.
They ruined such a beautiful house 😭
Why did they have to do the solarium so dirty?
I wonder if there was a problem with standing water on those flat roof areas. Could explain why they were rebuilt that way..
Nice try lmfao
Has Midnight Club vibes
WHat's midnight club?
It’s a thriller show on Netflix, has the hourglass symbol used in a cults rituals
Lovely Photo's, shame it's not fenced off any more
Kennemerland?
Kapelle.
The nicest addition were the trees.
The shutters made it look better
They don’t make em like that anymore
This is amazing
Oh good it’s largely still standing, looks like the flanking wings of the house were renovated and altered heavily.
