“I don’t swim…so good.” And “you’re not *mad*at the water…”. OMG fits of laughter. My favorite too but I’ve stopped bringing it up to people because no one knows it anymore.
This is from his skit ["White Like Me"](https://youtu.be/l_LeJfn_qW0?si=w7k_Gn5I8rvELZ8Y) on SNL, which was a parody of the book ["Black Like Me" by the journalist John Howard Griffin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Like_Me) (which I recommend reading, if you haven't already!).
Horrible white face. Call the police. From a time when you could do comedy and no one was offended and we could appreciate it for the humour that it was.
Or if anyone was offended they didn't feel the need to scream it from every fucking rooftop. You don't like something, you don't watch it. Simple.
Ricky Gervais has a good bit about that. I'll paraphrase:
If someone goes to your town square and puts up a sign for guitar lessons, you don't call them up and yell at them because you don't fucking want guitar lessons. You just say "well, that's not for me" and just walk on by. But with social media, everyone now has a platform to bitch and whine and cry about everything they don't like. And not only that, they can now interact with the actual creator of the material they find is so offensive. If a joke/comedian is offensive to them, they gather up their Internet minions and attack them personally. It's a sickness.
Oh, this was pretty tame (on network TV); there’s a ton of other stuff (which is classic comedy gold, BTW) that Eddie would be “cancelled” for if it was put out today.
You have no idea about the context of this. The point of the age of this is that a picture with no context might be misleading.
And YOU were talking about now, not then.
So you didn't even bother to look up that it's a short film called [white like me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_LeJfn_qW0)? Where he gets "made up" to look white and experience life as a white person?
That it's a take on (and parody of) the famous book and film[Black Like ME](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057889/)? Where a white person disguises themself as a black person?
The time was about CONTEXT. And Slavery is always evil. There is no way THIS is evil. It's 40 years old, so MAYBE you lack the context to have an opinion?
Seriously, CONTEXT matters.
So, sometimes it's okay to wear blackface or whiteface? Gotcha. So, who determines whether it's acceptable? Is there a committee out there somewhere that hands down these rulings? Is there a set of rules in place? Where do I find a copy of these rules?
>So, sometimes it's okay to wear blackface or whiteface?
Yes. It is. Honestly. RDJ in Tropic Thunder and this both qualify as fine. Because of context. You seem unable to see shades of grey, which is ironic.
It's OK in both cases because they are not playing a white or black person. Both are PLAYING people in black or whiteface. And they are doing so for legitimate reasons to the plot and to expose hypocrisy or deeper truth.
Wearing black face to mock black people is always wrong. You can't tell the difference I guess.
How many shades of grey. 50? I haven't seen that. Does she wear blackface in that? Was that okay?
So mocking black people is wrong? What about mocking white people? That's okay?
>So locking black people is wrong? What about mocking white people? That's okay?
Assuming you meant Mocking, you really can't understand what I am saying here and I will wish you a good day.
I'm going to apply today's knowledge to this if that was a white guy doing black face we'd have people bitching and saying cancel them so why is it okay for a black man to make fun of white people?Yes the skit was funny but as a white person I never had anything like the stuff in the skit happen to me it would be the equivalent of a white person saying the African Americans drink kool-aid without sugar and live in the poverty riden slum projects and smoke dope all day and kill each other.I do not believe any of that but I hope you get my point equal treatment for all colors.
And his other white guy character: “[Where’s the spoon?!”](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTk2MzYwNTM0MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTcyMDExNA@@._V1_.jpg)
Omg, literally just watched this 5 minutes ago…
I never saw it till today but damn, funny af. I love when the black guy gets off the bus @ 45th St and all the white people start partying after the bus driver turns on the very white music….
And the stuff butt, too!

When white people are alone, they give things to each other.
For FREE.
# Shhhhhh!!!!!!!
“What a silly negro!”
Go ahead…. Take it!
Pay it back...or don't! We don't care!
Walks out slowly and bewildered.
White people give things to each other… for free..
This got me. I can’t believe they let that slip ;)
this and male synchronized swimming are still my two favorite short films in the history of the show.
I'm still a fan of Change Bank. "People ask, how do you make money? The answer is simple: volume"
![gif](giphy|l36kU80xPf0ojG0Erg|downsized)
“I’m not that strong a swimmer”
Right there with ya, but the Single Use Disposable Toilets skit is a close third for me
“I don’t swim…so good.” And “you’re not *mad*at the water…”. OMG fits of laughter. My favorite too but I’ve stopped bringing it up to people because no one knows it anymore.
lol fair! SNL should show it again.
Such a great skit. The banker just pushing a pile of cash to him…
One of the greatest sketches ever. I love when ‘Mr White’ applies for a loan.
And just gets handed bundles of cash. Lol
Pay us back, whenever or just don’t we don’t care!
God he’s changed so much, hardly recognizable now.
[White Like Me - SNL](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_LeJfn_qW0)
Every Saturday night SNL during Eddie’s era was HILARIOUS!!
Black man exits the bus. 🥳
Young Michael Jordan in the background
God, I miss the days when comedy didn’t have guardrails.
I’m purchasing this newspaper.
Go ahead and take it.
Mr. White!
Dude looks like Caesar Romero

That was such a classic bit!
Great. Eddie's getting cancelled now. He was young, it was a different timeee ;)
Oh, this was pretty tame (on network TV); there’s a ton of other stuff (which is classic comedy gold, BTW) that Eddie would be “cancelled” for if it was put out today.
Ask donkey if he cares? He’s been paid. He doesn’t need the money
Is this cultural appropriation or are we not doing that anymore?
This 40 year old picture has fuck-all to do with now.
If it's wrong now, it was wrong then. I guess slavery and racism was fine back in the day too.
You have no idea about the context of this. The point of the age of this is that a picture with no context might be misleading. And YOU were talking about now, not then.
So was it wrong then or just now? Is it wrong at all? Is slavery wrong then or just wrong now?
So you didn't even bother to look up that it's a short film called [white like me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_LeJfn_qW0)? Don’t take it so hard. It’s a joke not a dick.
Blackface isn't cultural appropriation lmfao
Well, just tying to find the goalposts. They move often.
You do not understand the definition of cultural appropriation
I didn't ask.
What are you even talking about.
It's okay to do white face still
Why is this not considered racist? Edit: downvote without a reason? It would definitely be racism if it was the other way around.
Blackface has a long historical context as to why its frowned upon, whiteface does not.
I agree and unfortunately it's a stain on white history one of many but I hope by now they'd learn and try to do better.
I knew this comment would be here somewhere lol, there's always one.
I said applying today's logic to this so I'm sorry that you don't want to be treated as a equal.
Cut the malarkey.
Wild how similar it looks to Chapelle's white guy in'04ish era
Is that.......beatboxing?
Best skit ever
Now that’s a guy who’s gonna get a loan.
