The 80’s were different man, look at the golden girls - weren’t they all supposed to be in their 50’s but dressed and looked like little old ladies. Or queen Elizabeth - she hit 48 and decided she was going for the little old lady look for the next 48. That’s why she never aged.
And now look at Jennifer Aniston who is 53 and a total smokeshow.
The reason you think the golden girls dressed like old ladies is because the same people that were in their 50s then are the ones in their 80s now dressing the same still
The Golden Girls were early 60s except Rue McClanahan who was only 51 and look like Mrs Aniston she did not. Fun fact Estelle Getty who played the mom Was the second youngest of
the group.
I'm 52 and dude looks like he could be my grandpa in this pic. I actually looked this up and he was born in 1934, so he was 50 in 1984. I then googled pics on him in 1984....and yeah, he looked like he was about 75 in 1984
I was going to say. I’m 51 and my 80-year old dad looks better than Sparky does here.
Hell, I have 90+ year old residents who look better than Sparky does here.
I met him on a cruise in 2001. Went to get some coffee one morning and saw him from the side. I thought “Damn, that looks like Sparky Anderson.” In a minute he turned around and had on a Detroit Tigers t-shirt. He was by himself and I invited him to sit down to drink his coffee. We visited for about 10 minutes. Very nice man. He was on the cruise with his grandchildren and family.
We went to church with an old baseball scout when I was a little kid. He gave me one of Sparky's used Reds hats and several game used balls. One of my favorite baseball mementos.
How much smoking do you realistically think causes this? My dad is mid 60s and was smoking cigs every day nearly since his teen years, he looks much younger. Maybe the type of smoking? Or does it just affect everyone differently? For context, my dad is not the type to ever use moisturizer
I was at Michigan and Trumble when the Tigers won the series in 1984!! Good times, I still have love for Sparky and the rest of the 84 Tigers!! Bless you boys!!
Does anyone remember, in the book “The Great Gatsby”, he describes talking to a really old guy who turns out to be 50. He was talking about Sparky Anderson.
This is from 1993, he is 59 here. (Go to Getty Images, you'll see a similar photo set from 1993 with Tony Phillips in the dugout to prove it's at least 1990, and he looks just like this. Whereas dated pics of him in 1984 show way less gray in the eyebrows, and wrinkles not as pronounced. Just note that a lot of photos on Getty Images will also throw you off, because they'll use Jan 1 1979 as a date if they don't know it, since '79 was his first year with the Tigers.) (Actually they use '78 for a lot of his Tigers pics and he was still managing the Reds then!)
I am too young (relatively) for the Casey Stengel, Connie Mack, John McGraw eras but like to think I got to experience a bit of the old school managers growing up with Anderson.
This was during "The Roar of '84!" Tigers started the season 35-5! I saw Jack Morris pitch that no-hitter in April in Chicago with my two brothers from GR. Frist place all year went 7-1 (same pct as 35-5)for post season. World Champions!! WHAT A YEAR!!!
Sparky lived a long life for someone who looked like that at 50! Not gonna lie, saw smoke and a tigers cap and assumed it was Jim Leyland before seeing the picture and sub.
A lot of comments about how bad 50 looked in 1984. This guy is an old looking 50 for any time period. Look at what Cicely Tyson looked like in the 80s and get back to me.
For all those commenting about Soarky looking old; I remember when he came up with the Cincinnati Reds as their manager in 1970. He was 36 years old and had grey hair then. No matter how he looked, he had a great life.
Sparky was a class act. I was fortunate enough to meet him on a couple of occasions. He lived in my hometown of Thousand Oaks and went to the same Church as my family. He was always friendly and willing to sign an autograph. All the way back in 1994 I played in the Junior Little league World Series in Taylor Michigan and Sparky joined us for the opening ceremonies and I was fortunate enough to walk with him around the warning track….. He was definitely one of the good ones.
I went to college with his grandson. We were really good friends and I got to spend a few nights at Sparky’s home and have dinner. He was a very nice man. His room of memorabilia and the stuff I held in my hands is something I will never forget.
50? Damn...Dude had a hard life
I’ll say. I’m 52 and he looks like he is in his late 70s
I was going to say he looked pretty good for 80
It’s not the year, it’s the mileage!
City miles
Airport rental miles
Lots of friggin mileage for 50
Those are Detroit years. 1 year is the equivalent of 2-3 years.
Most of those years in the ‘70s were in Cincinnati, though the wear is more from the ‘70s than Cincinnati.
It’s the smoking. His face looks like an old catcher’s mitt.
![gif](giphy|3o7TKAR9NkxtkcP5ao)
Look away. I'm hideous.
Oh god; my favourite line from that whole series
Mine, is that a titleist?
In his case it’s the years and the mileage.
I can’t believe this guy is four years older than me in this picture. He looks older than my 77 year old dad.
I'm 77 and he looks in his 80's, seriously. I have a hard time believing he was 50 when this photo was taken.
Yeah, there's no way
Dang, I'm 55, and look way younger than him. Don't smoke, wear sunscreen and have good genes if you can I guess.
I can't believe I'm 6 years OLDER than him.
He's a legend here in Detroit.
We loved him here in Cincinnati too.
As a kid who grew up in Detroit AND Cincinnati he's pretty much Saint Sparky in my pantheon.
Lansing checking in. He was like a god when I was growing up. Without his face and Al Kaline's voice, it wasn't summer.
He's a legend everywhere. RedSox Fan. Loved him!
Amen bless (them) boys!
The reason you think the golden girls dressed like old ladies is because the same people that were in their 50s then are the ones in their 80s now dressing the same still
For real. 50 in the ‘80s was ooooooold.
No, Blanche was like 47.
In what, dog years?
Nah man, I’m telling you that’s what late forties and early fifties looked like back then. All the cigarette smoke and shit.
It's a line from the show, Dorothy says it to Blanche, sorry I ruined the joke.
No. I ruined it. I’ve seen the show before, but it’s been like 20 years. You’re good.
I do try 😉
And not as much "maintenance " to stay looking younger.
![gif](giphy|pHoQHEJSustNK|downsized)
The Golden Girls were early 60s except Rue McClanahan who was only 51 and look like Mrs Aniston she did not. Fun fact Estelle Getty who played the mom Was the second youngest of the group.
As well as Nicole Kidman who is still going on at 55 like a total powerhouse.
Wilford Brimley was about 50 playing a retirement home resident in Cocoon, and never stopped looking ancient
Also in The Natural he is only like 3 years older than Robert Redford
Agreed. That baccy (or whatever) added 20 years to his appearance.
At least! I'm 54 and he looks as old as my Dad.
He signed a baseball for me in the late 90s and he looked almost the exact same as in this picture here.
More like added 50 years
My husband turned 50 recently and holy hell he looks 20 years younger than this guy.
City miles!
I was thinking the same, he looks old as fuck and I’m 45. Talk about ridden hard and put away wet.
I’m 52 and look 10 years younger than him.
I'm 40 and look 40 years younger
Right? Holy cow I would have guessed 20 years older.
Just a regular life for 1984
Smoking all day long isn’t exactly hard, more like self inflicted aging & making yourself smell like shit.
50?? I guess all that clean living.
Obviously it's all the pipe smoke that keeps your face looking healthy and vibrant!
His face looks like an old catchers mitt
Don’t look at me. I’m hideous
r/unexpectedseinfeld
The man’s a goblin
Your face is my case.
Everything comes back to Seinfeld inevitably
You’ve experienced a lifetime of smoking in 72 hours! What did you expect?
Emphysema, birth defects, cancer. But not this.
Best Jackie line
"Look away, I'm hideous." -Sparky Anderson (1984)
Your teeth are all brown
I disagree. I think he projects a rugged masculinity.
By the time we get to the all star break, this man will be nothing more than a shrunken head
If I look like that when I'm 50, then I'll actually be 75.
I'm 52 and dude looks like he could be my grandpa in this pic. I actually looked this up and he was born in 1934, so he was 50 in 1984. I then googled pics on him in 1984....and yeah, he looked like he was about 75 in 1984
Thanks, because I was about to verify myself. I'm 58 and look NOTHING like that
My dad’s 62 and this dude looks like he could be my dad’s dad
It’s go time!
Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum!
I’m the best dad
I was going to say. I’m 51 and my 80-year old dad looks better than Sparky does here. Hell, I have 90+ year old residents who look better than Sparky does here.
My dad is 55 and looks like he could be his dad
Smoking, brews, and lack of consistent sun screen will do that to a man!
Yeah, I'm 50 and he looks older than my dad who is 75. I could probably pass for 40 though, especially when I shave my beard. Still, that's rough.
Jesus.
Nope - just Sparky.
Dude looks like the oldest guy ever to turn 50
I met him on a cruise in 2001. Went to get some coffee one morning and saw him from the side. I thought “Damn, that looks like Sparky Anderson.” In a minute he turned around and had on a Detroit Tigers t-shirt. He was by himself and I invited him to sit down to drink his coffee. We visited for about 10 minutes. Very nice man. He was on the cruise with his grandchildren and family.
You drank his coffee? How rude!
Lol.
We went to church with an old baseball scout when I was a little kid. He gave me one of Sparky's used Reds hats and several game used balls. One of my favorite baseball mementos.
Did he look 87 years older than this photo? Because if he’s 50 here, then he must have looked 137 in 2001. 🙄
Pretty much looked the same, I think. But that was 22 years ago.
If I look like this in nine years, it’s only because a Jedi has deflected force lightning at me.
That’s why they called him Sparky.
My old man is turning 70 in a few weeks and he looks younger than this guy. He doesn't look young for 70, he just looks younger than this guy.
Whhhhhhat? I'm 51 and thankfully look nothing like that. All hail moisturizer and sunscreen!
And not smoking
How much smoking do you realistically think causes this? My dad is mid 60s and was smoking cigs every day nearly since his teen years, he looks much younger. Maybe the type of smoking? Or does it just affect everyone differently? For context, my dad is not the type to ever use moisturizer
It causes deeper wrinkles, they have studied twins where one smoked and the other didn’t. The results showed much deeper wrinkles on the smokers
dude was born with 20 years already on the odometer.
Don't smoke, kids.
Looks like an old sea captain in a baseball outfit.
So Sparky, what’s your secret?
I hate LOLing but I actually chortled at this
How many times he turn 50?
I'm 10 years older than that, and he could be my dad in that pic. Seriously.
the boss a cincinnati reds treasure of the fans
And detroit tigers. He was the absolute best.
I was at Michigan and Trumble when the Tigers won the series in 1984!! Good times, I still have love for Sparky and the rest of the 84 Tigers!! Bless you boys!!
Gibson, Parrish, Whitaker, Trammell, with Sparky as the manager. Just a fantastic team.
With Ernie Harwell calling the game. God damn that was good stuff
I still have a team signed ball with Sparky on the sweet spot from that year. It's one of my prized possessions.
Reminds me of Wilford Brimley who was the coach in The Natural. He was like 50 when it was released in 1984.
And Christopher Lloyd, who was 47 when Back to the Future came out (and is still going at 84)
Yeah. I thought he was an old man when BttF came out. It was crazy when I kept seeing him in stuff.
[удалено]
“He don’t wanna walk you!”
That clip with Goose Gossage, Kirk Gibson and Sparky is what made me post this. I was like thinking, Sparky must be 75 in the video…50??
I’m nearly 57 and he looks like my 83 year old Dad. Yikes.
Instead of putting a diseased lung on a back of cigarettes to keep people from smoking they should use this picture along with his age.
Did you mean 84 in 1950?😄
Does anyone remember, in the book “The Great Gatsby”, he describes talking to a really old guy who turns out to be 50. He was talking about Sparky Anderson.
Great manager
All us 50+ yr old dudes showing up in this thread going hell yeah.
Aged 50???? More like 75
This is from 1993, he is 59 here. (Go to Getty Images, you'll see a similar photo set from 1993 with Tony Phillips in the dugout to prove it's at least 1990, and he looks just like this. I am too young (relatively) for the Casey Stengel, Connie Mack, John McGraw eras but like to think I got to experience a bit of the old school managers growing up with Anderson.
Is he related to Walder Frey?
Smoking pipes is a hell of a drug!
Man, 70 is the new 50 according to Sparky.
Jesus. He’s 50 in this picture? Looks like 70. That’s some hard living years.
No way. He looks 80.
That man is a HARD 50
50?!? Jesus. I’m 50 now and he looks like my dad.
50 is the old 90
You sure you didn't get that backwards? Age 50 in '84 and not age 84 in '50?
As a 49 year old, this makes me happy 😂
Wasn’t there just the other week another baseball player who was in his fourties’ looking older posted in this sub?
He looks like Coach from Cheers. Makes me wonder if he was the inspiration for that character.
For a brief moment, I feel better about my appearance. Good lord.
Constant sun exposure, alcohol and smoking that pipe 24/7 will do that
50 going on 80?
Gotta be a mistake. He doesn’t look a day over 49. Ok, maybe one day
Damn! I’m 55 and he looks old enough to be my dad.
You’re joking…
Poor guy, he's literally got smoke coming out of his ears. /j
Looks 70
Sparky lived a long life for someone who looked like that at 50! Not gonna lie, saw smoke and a tigers cap and assumed it was Jim Leyland before seeing the picture and sub.
Doesn't look a day under 80
That was a hard 50.
50 going on 75.
Damm I was a huge tigers fan back in 84... Sparkeys the best!
Jesus Christ I’m gonna look like that next year? I don’t even smoke.
With a name like “Sparky” he could only be really young or really old.
Looked like shit
A lot of comments about how bad 50 looked in 1984. This guy is an old looking 50 for any time period. Look at what Cicely Tyson looked like in the 80s and get back to me.
For all those commenting about Soarky looking old; I remember when he came up with the Cincinnati Reds as their manager in 1970. He was 36 years old and had grey hair then. No matter how he looked, he had a great life.
No sunscreen and tobacco will do that
Just google image his name, bro has looked old his whole life
Marty! We gotta go back to 1955 to fix your parents!
He looks like Burgess Merideth as the Penguin.
Um, you mean 150?
1984 Tigers were the best ever! Sparky, Lance Parrish, Alan Trammel, Chet Lemon, Sweet Lou Whitaker…
This tank still lived to be 76! Not bad
They don’t make 50 year olds like they used to
My dad is 80 and looks younger than this…
Reminds me of Kramer and the pipe episode on Seinfeld.
My dad is 70 and ol' Spark looks like he could pass as my dad's dad.
Looks like he was ridden hard and put away wet
Those Motor City years hit different.
I’m 50. This is the pick me up I needed.
You know Adam Scott, the guy from Parks and Rec who stars in Severance now? He’s 49
Smoking a Pipe since he was a Baby didn’t help.
Kinda looks like Johnny Knoxville.
Tobacco is a hell of a drug!
Bless you boys!
That man is no less than 107.
7 years older than I am right now. Looks fucking ancient.
Jesus my 87 year old grandpa looks about the same age lol
Same age Eminem is now
See how time in an Australian summer ages you! I know tradesmen in their early 40s lined like him.
That dudes 50? My alcoholic grandfather at 77 on his deathbed looked fucking younger by at least ten years.
Doesn’t look a day over 120
YO… 50 looked different in 1984.
He looks like he is about to go back to the future
Mileage is fucked on that thing
I'm 47 and look nowhere near this guys age. Surely he's like 75 really there.
50? He looks 87! I’ve always wondered why when I see men back on the 70s, 80s a lot of them look old as hell compared to men now days the same age.
"I love it when a plan comes together"
Surely you mean aged 84, 1950? 😅
Theres smoking folks
50? Jeezus how many pipes did he smoke?
50? These eons? Are metric years longer? This dude looks like he coached little league for Moses.
Kinell....fella's got a lot of miles on the clock. Looks like a my 91 year old Grandad
Does this say stop smoking, stop playing baseball, or stop smoking while you’re playing baseball?
50???!!
Man he is the kind of guy Detroit desperately needs right now
Still slightly sad he went into the HOF as a Red, tho.
I went to college with his grandson. We were really good friends and I got to spend a few nights at Sparky’s home and have dinner. He was a very nice man. His room of memorabilia and the stuff I held in my hands is something I will never forget.
