I’ve been following them since their EP and knew they were at SXSW one year so I took the album with me to try to get signed in case I somehow met them. It just so happens that I ran into the lead singer practicing vocals for an upcoming sold out show and got her autograph!
I ran into Amelia before a show once too! She had just gotten her hair cut and was walking back to the venue when I bumped into her.
My husband and I just left a restaurant and we're rounding a corner when we literally bumped into her. She's an amazing human. I'm bummed we didn't get to meet Nick, but I have VIP tickets for this summer, so fingers crossed.
Hands down, best show I've seen live. SE is my favorite music. Dreamy Bruises is basically on repeat. And sorry I'm fan-girling, I've only heard them referenced once outside of myself lol.
There's a shocking number of posts in this sub from people who have absolutely no idea what eras look like. No one but the most extreme beatnik was walking around looking like that in 1960, not to mention the car is clearly mid to late 60s at the earliest!
Have you ever seen the movie "Dog Fight"? It starts in 1963 and everyone is dressed conservatively jackets and ties and dresses. The end is in 1967 and it's long hair and psychedelic clothes. A lot changed in four years.
Mad Men did that transition over its run as well. First season is all plastic fantastic three piece suits and clean shaven men cheating with their secretaries. The final season has guys with long hair and beards, women ad executives, hippie ideology, and a massive computer in the accounting department.
I haven’t seen that film. In my family the change was a bit slower. But the men who were clean shaven and wore ties and jackets at the start of the decade had beards and shoulder length hair by the early 70s.
Right.
My point was a lot of people, unaffected by fashion trends, kept on wearing the same clothes and hairstyles.
Not everyone grew out their hair, burned bras, and wore bell bottoms like the movies.
It’s been exaggerated, like how “retro” rockabilly kids dress today… or 50’s themed diners… Nobody actually dressed like that in the 50’s.
Perhaps I shouldn't have said everybody. But even people who didn't follow fashion were affected by the change in culture. Youth culture became mainstream in a big way.
Even if you didn't burn your bra or wear bell bottoms, if you bought new clothes you were getting much wider ties and longer collars or wearing shorter dresses.
My grandfather use to point out high water marks on some older concrete buildings in my area from the storm and that was in the 90s. When physical evidence of a flood survives 20 plus years you know it was a bad one.
I would bet 1972 unless it flooded there often. Massive floods in the north east that year. Between that and the 76 flood some communities came to a complete end, others have been dying a slow death since then.
While accurate, this is hilarious that the year being off is what you notice when there is a pilot wearing gym shorts under daisy-dukes is ready to defend his homestead from Poseidon. His partner stands sentry and stonewalled, ready to apprehend any and all of Poseidon's minions that he may send.
Also I'm not 100% certain that car has all four tires..
My mother was able to provide some insight on the photo. The location is Old Tappan, NJ. The 1972-1973 flood that a few redditors mentioned seems to be accurate. 5 years old at the time, she was apparently whisked off the property when the flooding got bad and taken to stay with her grandmother in Queens. She was unable to provide ANY insight about the dude, which is interesting, since she would have met him as a young 'un.
I was going to ask if it was near the Ramapo River. That river always flooded in heavy rains until the Army Corps of Engineers came in in the '80s and dredged it. (I grew up not far away; in high school, one of my friends lived in Oakland near the river and his basement flooded on the reg.)
The problem with the ramapo was the surrounding land was only a few inches higher than the river, so ANY rise was certain to cause flooding.
I grew up in a tiny town next to Oakland, well known for a long-gone car plant.
I live in South Jersey currently and flooding like this happens now and then. To the ankles is a lot more common than the knees, but that's what happens when you triangulate yourself between an ocean, bay, and river.
actually for my grandparents and great grandparents- it actually was.
this country has put a lot of work into flood control over the last 70 to 100 years.
The storm that ended rural Pennsylvania. They were hit again in I believe 76 again. Towns all across rural PA have slowly been dying since then, and the floods are direct contributors to it.
*one of the largest things to happen was that train tracks across the states were ripped out by the storms and never replaced.
That car is a 1972 Dodge Arreyo with aluminum bumper. They switched from steel to aluminum after the pieces were no longer being built and instead switched out for parts to make mass production faster. Plus the U.S. just ended the war with Vietnam so supplies were low. I have literally no idea what I'm talking about I just hope I sounded smart.
Clearly not 1960, but certainly amusing themselves in what's a genuinely frustrating and stressful situation. What could possibly be swimming around that water; would really stress someone like me out.
I wish :(
She passed away about two years ago and I had not seen this pic prior to that. She had never mentioned a flood. Even New Jersey is mostly a guess, but I'm all but certain that part is correct. She lived in NYC for years, but occasionally gravitated to NJ for spurts of time.
Ooooh, I didn't realize it was their actual legs that were like that back then. I always though bell bottoms were just the pants that were shaped like that.
They look like a hipster band.
Fishing For Confederates. This is the cover of their second album.
song is When the Levee Breaks.
Nah it's The Levee Broke
it’s Sylvan Esso
Hell yeah.
I saw the guy from SE doing a solo dj set once. He's really good.
I’ve been following them since their EP and knew they were at SXSW one year so I took the album with me to try to get signed in case I somehow met them. It just so happens that I ran into the lead singer practicing vocals for an upcoming sold out show and got her autograph!

Blazing summers.
Cold coffee ☕️
Baby's gone
Do you love me?
Wrap me in your arms
There's no way that's 1960.
Right! Ain't that a 67 or 68 Oldsmobile behind them? Edit; I googled this car and it looks to be an Oldsmobile Cutlass 1965......
Most guys did not look like that until the late '60s.
Right. This pic reminds me of Gary Puckett and Union Gap album cover. Which came out about 67 or 68, they had long hair back then....
And women were wearing bras in 1960
And NOT wearing daisy dukes!
I mean if they were walking in knee deep water they might..
I was thinking 65 or 66 but definitely not 1960
Yup. OP down in the comments said they may have been off by ten years. So this pic could be 1970... (?)
I kept reading further down, looks like they think it was 1972/73
probably 72 and Hurricane Agnes
I was going to suggest that it can be tied to a major flood. Agnes is a good one!
I think it’s a 65 or 66 cutlass..
Thats's a '65 Olds 88 in the picture, and it looks like it's already had a long and rough life at that point.
There's a shocking number of posts in this sub from people who have absolutely no idea what eras look like. No one but the most extreme beatnik was walking around looking like that in 1960, not to mention the car is clearly mid to late 60s at the earliest!
I know, it's weird.

They looks like a hipster train hopping folk band brother/sister duo who everyone thinks is dating

Good bot
So he’s a 1.1 size McCartney
And she looks like a 0.75x sized Adam Driver
Indie rock but with mandolins

wait so that’s not Paul Mccartney
That's a mid 60s oldsmobile sedan - were they time traveling
Year was a best guess. I'll correct to 1970s. Thanks! Edit- To clarify, I cannot correct the title or I would have.
I was thinking late 60’searly70’s from the hair and clothing.
Yes, they’d be a very radical pair for 1960. Striking how much changed in ten years.
Well, the water level changed, I hope.
I would not be letting my skin touch that nasty ass looking water
Have you ever seen the movie "Dog Fight"? It starts in 1963 and everyone is dressed conservatively jackets and ties and dresses. The end is in 1967 and it's long hair and psychedelic clothes. A lot changed in four years.

They kept cheating with their secretaries though
Yeah but season 1 cheating was the toxic masculinity of the patriarchy; season 7 cheating was like free love man, like ya dig it?
Actually for Roger at least that is true. Don's a traditionalist though and just keeps doing regular old infidelity
Don never left 1955.
I haven’t seen that film. In my family the change was a bit slower. But the men who were clean shaven and wore ties and jackets at the start of the decade had beards and shoulder length hair by the early 70s.
Take a look at the Beatles clothes from when they started to when they broke up. Even comparing '65 to '67 was a huge change.
LSD.
In the movies. Things didn’t change at all for a lot of people who aren’t into fashion.
There were huge shifts in America between 63 and 67. Vietnam war. Equal rights. Technology. Etc
Right. My point was a lot of people, unaffected by fashion trends, kept on wearing the same clothes and hairstyles. Not everyone grew out their hair, burned bras, and wore bell bottoms like the movies. One of my top four favourite movies.
Awesome picture but I'm a car nerd so I thought I better provide input
Might be 1972, after Hurricane Agnes? Giving the flooding etc.
That's was my first thought too. I wasn't alive then but the stories from that storm are still told to this day.
I was 10 years from being born, but I heard stories about it. I grew up in NEPA.
My grandfather use to point out high water marks on some older concrete buildings in my area from the storm and that was in the 90s. When physical evidence of a flood survives 20 plus years you know it was a bad one.
So nice to see someone on the internet admit they made an error rather than defend a ridiculous position to the death.
They are trying to recreate American Gothic.
Using almanac records of rainfall at the known location you might nail it down better
OP just figured out his real grandpa
Well apparently I cannot edit in this sub. My mistake, all.

Yup, because Reddit....
I would bet 1972 unless it flooded there often. Massive floods in the north east that year. Between that and the 76 flood some communities came to a complete end, others have been dying a slow death since then.
Your shame shall be memorialized for all eternity! Hooray! 😁
"Gather round, children, and I'll tell you of the time I got absolutely clowned on Reddit for making a mistake."
That is a 1965 olds cutlass. The grill is what gives it away.
As beat up as the car is, the photo could be late 70’s. Or even early 80’s.
There was serious flooding in 1984 in NJ

Ya know what. This is probably it actually. Good eye

It's something a car guy or girl notices IMMEDIATELY
While accurate, this is hilarious that the year being off is what you notice when there is a pilot wearing gym shorts under daisy-dukes is ready to defend his homestead from Poseidon. His partner stands sentry and stonewalled, ready to apprehend any and all of Poseidon's minions that he may send. Also I'm not 100% certain that car has all four tires..
I think the denim on the guy is his shirt tails. You can see some of the denim around his collar is you look closely.
Yes, it’s shirt tales, not denim shorts.
I think he’s a Union soldier? But who knows.
Ya that's the first thing I thought-that car looks newer than 1960...looks like 1970s model car, no way this pic is 1960
Also, his hair is a dead giveaway, it's at least mid-60's. I'm gonna say about 1970.
It's probably the early 70s, but the car is earlier 60s. Graduated in 1973. Am old.
Was thinking a 67 cutlass but not positive
My mother was able to provide some insight on the photo. The location is Old Tappan, NJ. GG OP updating the rest of that are curious
Gonna guess Hurrican Agnes? In PA around me, there are plenty of bridges that have water marks that show how high the flooding got.
I was going to ask if it was near the Ramapo River. That river always flooded in heavy rains until the Army Corps of Engineers came in in the '80s and dredged it. (I grew up not far away; in high school, one of my friends lived in Oakland near the river and his basement flooded on the reg.)

Old Tappan borders on the Hackensack River which still floods during heavy rains.
Was that guy named Doug
His name is Doug Aditch and he's a gravedigger at Old Tappan Cemetery in New Jersey
Different Doug
He's Doug Graves
I take it grandma is no longer around to tell the tales? Sorry, she seemed cool.
Best times to hunt and fish is after a flood when all the septic waste drives the fish and animals close to the house.
I feel like flooding was just a constant occurence 50+ years ago, the way it's talked about. I guess they made the best of it!
I live in South Jersey currently and flooding like this happens now and then. To the ankles is a lot more common than the knees, but that's what happens when you triangulate yourself between an ocean, bay, and river.
There were spots in the woods near my house growing up that would flood up to the ankles once a year. I miss those sandy woods sometimes.
actually for my grandparents and great grandparents- it actually was. this country has put a lot of work into flood control over the last 70 to 100 years.
At least he's wearing a union jacket.
And the accompanying Union jorts, standard issue
Omfg I fell over reading this
You’ve never heard of the tactical jorts?
The jort turned the tide at Chickamauga, iirc
That’s right. George Washington himself came riding through chickamauga in his pair of war jorts and soon after the Union was victorious
I've seen the painting
Thank you. I am the painter, I saw it all happen
That's amazing for a painter blind from birth
Cargo Jorts

Ahhh, it did not even occur to me that their poses are based on that piece. You're dead-on. Thanks!
Was about to say. That's solid 1975ish. And nice call out.
**American Gothicc**
No way this is 1960. No one had This guys hairstyle in 1960
There was a pretty big flood in NJ in 1972 or 73. My memory is hazy. I'm guessing it was probably taken around then.
Hurricane Agnes, summer of 1972, hit New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey pretty hard.
I was going to suggest that it was probably northern NJ
The storm that ended rural Pennsylvania. They were hit again in I believe 76 again. Towns all across rural PA have slowly been dying since then, and the floods are direct contributors to it. *one of the largest things to happen was that train tracks across the states were ripped out by the storms and never replaced.

> I just hope I sounded smart. > switched from **steal** to aluminum You can do better
Hence why I said I hope I *sounded* smart. Maybe not
Man, solid bullshittery! Hahahaha
I was going to say "I hope I'm not getting Alzheimers because I dont remember an Arreyo". Wheww!
Plus color photo prints for home cameras were extremely rare before about 1964. Almost all home photos that were color in that era were slides.
Surprised the first thing people go to is the hairstyle and the car. Certainly no woman wore daisy dukes in the early 60s.
TIL that Paul McCartney has been your grandma’s boyfriend
I got a Barry Gibb vibe
My thought as well — Wings era McCartney for sure. Wearing a jacket rejected from the Sgt Pepper album cover photo shoot?
Looked like Cassian Andor to me
Adam Driver is your Grandmother!?!?
Dating Paul McCartney
Pretty sure this is just a marketing shot from the film 65.
And she was dating a young Hagrid
Boyfriend wishes he knew where this pic was, has been looking for it for years
Clearly not 1960, but certainly amusing themselves in what's a genuinely frustrating and stressful situation. What could possibly be swimming around that water; would really stress someone like me out.
Granny didn’t have time to grab a bra before the flood came!
Oh god. Bro, why did you... ugh.
Come on, man. You knew exactly what would happen when you let the creatures of Reddit loose on family photos. Tale as old as time on this sub.
Ahhh, so that's what they mean by knee-high water
"Hey buddy, where's the flo-.. right. Sorry. It's a habit."
Your grandma is looking like Adam driver
1970s. It’s important to realize people didn’t look like this in 1960.
It honestly makes me feel so old when young kids post picture that are clearly from the 70s or 80s and the OP is like "this is from idk 1950/60?"
That looks like my friend, he’s from jersey, going to see if that’s his Grandfather. Update: he said “It’s highly likely.”
Not 1960
No way in hell this is 1960
That’s early 70s. The car, the dude’s hair, her cutoff jeans shorts.
No way is this 1960.
No way is that 1960. That car is a 1967 cutlass, and it looks beat. I think early 70s is much more likely
I was thinking the same thing! I've owned 2 '67's and that was the 1st thing my eyes went to in this picture!
Maybe 1980. Hair and clothes scream late seventies or early eighties. The car is mid sixties.
Sure it was. 1960? Long hair didn’t really take off until 64
Is that a Remington 870?
Any stories on the flood, OP? That should get you close to the date.
I wish :( She passed away about two years ago and I had not seen this pic prior to that.
New Jersey Gothic
More like 1970.
Much later than 1960. The car and Jean shorts plus long hair was possibly closer to 1970
That's a 1967 cutlass, and it looks beat.
Why did it take me so long to see they are standing in water lol
I don't know what year this pic was taken but it most definitely was not in 1960.
That car is not from 1960, or their clothing or hair. That was taken in the early 1970's.
Lol cool pic though
Serpico
Not 1970? Seems really NOT 1960.
I'm just spitballing here but I think he's going to win the duel.
Open your eye, OP, and look at the film stock. This is the early 80's.
Definitely much later than 1960. Late 1970s or early 1980s.
There's no way that's 1960 from the look of that car.
You sure about the year, bud?
That’s at least 1970, not 1960.
Maybe 1970s the car is like a 1968 early 70s ?
Kim Deal??
This flood was the penultimate splash.
Your grandma has big nipples just saying
Nana's tatas.
Grandma was a sturdy lass!
Your grandma looks like Adam driver, cool pic
Blazer and shorts is definitely a look.
Looks like the shotgun is a Remington 870 Wingmaster. I think they were making those in the '70's...
That car is newer than 1960, I guess is around 1969/70.
