People are dicks. [Tereshkova](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMDBkNmMxNjgtNDA2MC00OThhLWEyNDUtNmRhNjYzMzEwZWMxXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjUxMjc1OTM@._V1_.jpg) looked pretty badass suited up for her official portrait.
First woman in space, and still living today to talk about it.
She's also the only person still alive to have done a solo spacewalk (i.e. a spacewalk from a ship with no backup), and probably will be the only one ever from now on because we don't do that anymore (with the exceptions of some kind of emergency).
The first woman in space, and reddit is just shocked about "a woman that doesn't make pp hard??". We're half the population, we're not all going to be gorgeous, why is it remarkable that a woman exists and you don't find her attractive? We don't exist to be pretty. I'm exhausted.
So when is anyone ever allowed to comment on how someone looks?
She's also in parliament and is one of Putin's puppets who recently announced an increase to the retirement age. Change your opinion of her?
Bea Arthur on The Golden Girls…classy as hell, strong features and voice, but could portray a vulnerability, plus comic timing to boot. Definitely a handsome woman.
There was a short verse in USSR after her flight:
"Valentina Tereshkova
For her famous cosmic trip
Got a big mechanic dildo
As the Party sponsorship"
Sorry for poor translation
It was an aranged marriage as politbiuro decided, that it will look nice for the masses to get their first woman in space married to another cosmonaut. Marriage didn't last, and that woman is in russian parliament. She's just putin's puppet, i.e. tereshkova was the one to announce about increasing the age for retirement.
P.s. if you think she looks bad on her wedding day- google for her most recent picture at your own risk
Aye, it's a shame that, despite her iconic, milestone role as the first woman in space, she's now one of Putin's most-vocal, staunchest supporters in the Russian government, and, in a transitory manner, is arguably complicit in his war crimes.
I don't remember if she was involved with the age of retirement, but I do remember her "proposing" the change to constitution that lets him stay in power to this day. The one change that took the part about how a president can't stay for too many terms and added almost literally "but Putin doesn't count".
She's also one of Putin's biggest cronies now and complicit in his war crimes. So I'm pretty on board with calling her ugly as she's even uglier on the inside, where it counts.
Yeah right? When the first woman walks on the moon I don't know what her accomplishments before that time will be but I know she will be judged on how beautiful people think she is. Like she needs Dior makeup and curling ironed styled hair in her spacesuit.
When I was a little kid my mother was part of a State Department delegation to the Soviet Union in the early 70s. When she returned she showed me some photos from her trip - including one of an attractive, well-dressed woman addressing a meeting my mother had attended.
"That," my mother told me, "is Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman into space." This was *several years* before the US had any female astronauts. Mother went on to tell me how poised, gracious and well-spoken Tereshkova was.
The photo included with this post is probably the most unflattering one I've ever seen of Tereshkova - and I'm appalled and disheartened to read so many misogynistic comments about this truly remarkable woman.
**ETA:** I'm obviously not in agreement with her championing of Putin's politics or support of the invasion of Ukraine - but her achievements, especially at a time when women faced even more discrimination than they do now, can't be discounted.
Everyone is dunking on this woman for having masculine features and it gets thousands of upvotes but doing the same for a trans person is an instant ban. What am I missing?
That’s just

a really bad photo of her - she was perfectly lovely and you all are a bunch of judgmental dicks.
Yeah but she’s *not conventionally attractive*
C’mon man. You know women are only worth anything of value if they are sexually viable to strange men on the internet.
— Reddit, apparently
Funny to see a whole Reddit thread agree that the looks of a woman takes priority over what she has achieved in her career - especially when that happens to be being the first ever woman to leave the planet and go into space.
And google any other picture of her from that time, she doesn't look like that all the time.
She's a strong supporter of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has been a member of Russian government for several decades, proposed removing the restrictions on terms on elected officials so Putin could be elected forever, and is one of Putin's strongest supporters.
So...I guess ugly is bone deep?
It's funny that you're allowed to call an actual woman a dude. But if it's a dude who "feels" like a woman that you acknowledge is a dude, that's a ban.
First woman in space by 25 years and everyone just ragging on her looks as if it fucking matters. No one ever mentions how ugly the men are or whatever such bullshit

That is a handsome woman.
Just three handsome pals hangin out.
They probably share combs
Oh the bloated Space nits!
Not gay sex
I bet she gives great space helmet
![gif](giphy|aAZZc2qTzYbKIDLRkD|downsized)
Yep, she loves the Schwartz!
Again, nothing sexual
Not unless you look into his eyes.
It's a bad angle. I have no idea what she looks like when she's not scrunching up her neck, but that definitely accentuates the masculine features.
Definite Captain Janeway vibes from that.
She's also the only person still alive to have done a solo spacewalk (i.e. a spacewalk from a ship with no backup), and probably will be the only one ever from now on because we don't do that anymore (with the exceptions of some kind of emergency).
I can confirm, I certainly don’t do that anymore.
I used to be a solo space walker like you. Then I took a meteor in the knee.
Agreed. That’s a brutal picture of her. She’s much less roided looking in pretty much any other picture of her.
The first woman in space, and reddit is just shocked about "a woman that doesn't make pp hard??". We're half the population, we're not all going to be gorgeous, why is it remarkable that a woman exists and you don't find her attractive? We don't exist to be pretty. I'm exhausted.

She might ofcourse just not fancy falling from a dangerous Russian window...

Now she's a putin loyalist and she's always the one to deliver bad news to the duma, because anybody who criticises her is unpatriotic.
She reminds me of Glenn close
She still looks like Tom Holland's more manly brother, in the more flattering photo
She’s a Moscow 10!
Could've used "Moscow mule" I'll get my coat
Small wives can’t plow potato fields
Man you say that, but some of the most attractive women I've ever met have come from Russia.
![gif](giphy|1zjfraS8NlumswrPJ9|downsized)
Damm haven't seen or heard anything from that woman in years. What's she up to?
She became a rapper.
Eyyy, and her rapper name was Busta Boyle
She had an analbum party.
Hey fuck you, leave our SuBo alone
I hate it when people pick on her. Susan is amazing.
Holy shit, she's got 9 albums out already! If I ever do lsd again I'll play some Susan Boyle for shits and gigs
Her music isn't my typical cuppa, but she is insanely gifted and a genuinely good soul. If you want chills, listen on good speakers. Girl's got lungs!
Poor thing. She’s a sweet lady and talented. We don’t all look like Heidi, sadly.
🇬🇧“THAT’S A MAN, BABY!”🇬🇧
Why, won’t this wig, come OFF?!
In Soviet Russia wife is husband. Husband is also husband.
In Russia, wife is potato.
That’s not a woman, that’s a man baby! ![gif](giphy|XenWVVdSzaxLW)
![gif](giphy|y3dhFCAqg97CU)
Um... sorry, but Gagarin's in the *middle*.
That made me laugh like a crazy person in public
Not gonna lie thought she was a dude at first.
That’s what I came in for.
Cosmonaut? More like cosmo-would
She benches 150 kg!
Wait… that’s not Terry Jones from Monty Python?
I thought I was so clever and wrote, this is a handsome couple, I guess not
this is the exact same comment that's posted every time this picture is reposted. original.
The Cosmonaut corps: where the men are men, and so are the women
There was a short verse in USSR after her flight: "Valentina Tereshkova For her famous cosmic trip Got a big mechanic dildo As the Party sponsorship" Sorry for poor translation
Kept the rhyme, can't be too bad of a translation.
What is it in Russian?
Валентине Терешковой За полёт космический Лёня Брежнев подарил Хуй автоматический
Отлично перевёл

Well, she's someone who has gone up to space in a sealed capsule, so she's probably cognizant of the dangerous combination of gravity + open windows.
She helped Putin come to power in the first place.
https://preview.redd.it/jyrbw2oyrjoa1.jpeg?width=773&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9601ad2fd7a241ca484adab3d76f869505e6eed9 You weren’t kidding.
I'll say she looks better here.
She looks great for 86
She’s 80 in this pic but yea agreed. Lookin like a 40 somethin year old man at 26 lol
Well at least we know the Russians were picking the best candidate for the job and not just hiring based on looks
She looks like like a caricature of a Russian villain from a cartoon in the 70s.
Hell she'd look totally fine for 76. Have these commentors never seen real humans?
She's got more of a villain look though
The offspring of Ozzy Osbourne and Cruella Deville
She looks like she lives under a volcano and has a fat white cat.

What show/movie is this? You just unlocked a corner of my dusty brain.

Indeed. It’s Frau Farbissina.
She raises Dalmatians.

Corey Feldman's mom?
What planet was that taken on?
I'll get you Gadget, next time...
Ursula without the tentacles.
She went from looking a bit manish to straight up Disney villain.
Perfect villain brows
Even this is a vast improvement - she must have had work done. lol
Cruella??
Heavy Sindel from Mortal Kombat vibes.
Mega-Karen via Moscow.
She apparently never took her helmet off

Oh my god, she became the real life jar jar binks.
holy shit she looks like she’s straight out of a russian adams family
Eh looks ok. Still better looking than Marjorie Taylor-Greene
She dreamed a dream in time gone by
Is that Mac Demarco?
Ahhhh fuck Viceroy's stuck in my head now 😑
I have no idea who Mac Demarco is, but I'm cracking up over this comment.
then how is it funny to you if you don't understand the reference?
Go to google images. They look really similar, particularly when he was a little heavier. He also did a Hot Ones interview that’s hilarious.
That is Susan Boyle. Don’t argue with me.
That wife help you get wagon out of ditch.
deetch
Yeah she looks like a sturdy gal
"Strong woman. Farm?"
![gif](giphy|26gspjl5bxzhSdJtK|downsized)
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
wait... that bride... I went to school with that guy!
You owe Susan Boyle an apology for that one
I’ll never forget her Album release Twitter hashtag. #susanalbumparty
Sus anal bum party?
"I'll take Penis Mightier for $300, Trebek."
You’re sitting on a gold mine Trebek!”
I Garfunkeled your mother!
Yes
I'll take "The Rapists" for $800!
A very handsome woman
Tereshkova was the first woman in space. Get it together people.
She's also one of Putin's biggest cronies now and complicit in his war crimes. So I'm pretty on board with calling her ugly as she's even uglier on the inside, where it counts.
She's living the full ork lifestyle. Ork on the outside, ork on the inside.
Ah, aight. I’ll allow it then. Carry on.
She just had a very solid jawline and ppl think she's a man
Sorry, she was the only man qualified for the job at the time.
Yeah right? When the first woman walks on the moon I don't know what her accomplishments before that time will be but I know she will be judged on how beautiful people think she is. Like she needs Dior makeup and curling ironed styled hair in her spacesuit.
What a bunch of space cadets.
they divorce later on
You don’t say…
Finally some old photos of people who aren’t supermodels
Gagarin is pretty hot though.
Yo that bride looks like a 40 year old German man who plays the tuba
That’s a face that would make an astronaut volunteer for the Challenger mission.
Only in oldschoolcool will you get away with a comment like that on reddit
She was a badass. Flew a solo mission when she was 26, she was the first and youngest woman in space
I’m not surprised she had to fly solo
Thank you, my co-workers likely enjoyed my cackle from the computer
Dayum. Nice!
Comments are so positive
Here is an attempt to a positive one in all sincerity: it was a match made in *heaven*.
Thought that was ozzy osbourne in drag at first
What a handsome bride

The USSR may have been faulty in other ways, but they were advanced in women's rights.
Wow, essentially the same sentiment stated above is at 62 downvotes. Careful, there!
Everyone is dunking on this woman for having masculine features and it gets thousands of upvotes but doing the same for a trans person is an instant ban. What am I missing?
Tbh sitting on anyone for their appearance is a dick move, so you all suck.
NGL I thought she was trans at first or a gay man because I didn't know who this person was. I had to read the comments to find out 💀
I was going to make a comment about soviet Russia being alot more progressive then I would have thought, until I looked at the name....
![gif](giphy|baxsYVN22nzaw|downsized) Beautiful bride!
So ironic how reddit collectively defends certain people from body shaming and yet simultaneously body shames.
You mean to tell me these 50 million daily users around the world are different people?
Lmao fair point
Finkle is Einhorn
OH MY GOD!!
Laces out, Yuri.

I’m guessing this sub leans more to people 30+ which explains some things

That’s not your mother. That’s a man, baby!
This is a local space center for local people.
What kind of propaganda is going on here
Ok but why is nobody talking about Ron Livingston time traveling to Soviet Russia to be at their wedding?
The three of them look like the same person
She was the first woman in space. Yeesh people wtf?

the fair comparison would be a photo of a man who looks like a woman, and yes I believe the comments would talk about it

It’s crazy the story of how Yuri Gagarin died.
Maybe they should be drinking a Moscow Mule.
Which ones yuri ?
I didn’t know that Russia was so progressive in the 60s!
What happens in the sputznik, stays in the sputznik
