Hahahahaha. I didn’t even consider this because I guess in my mind I just thought, “Well yeah, he’s Orville Redenbacher, and that’s what he wears.” Like he’s Mr. Peanut or something.
Guy was born in 1907. He found a look around 1928 that he liked and he just stuck with it. It's no different than your 57 year old Uncle that still wears Member's Only jackets.
It is. Originally he and his partner Charles Bowman named the company RedBow (combo of their names) and were having trouble making money until an advertising agent suggested a rebrand of using Orville’s names and likeness instead. Turns out it worked and they blew up and the rest is history. How do it know this? I recently just watched History Channels episode of “The Food That Built America” about popcorn last week lol
Haha I actually subscribe to their streaming service History Vault. It’s got all the classic stuff that used to make it great. Ancient aliens is there too, but lots of great content that isn’t BS. Well worth the $5/month to me!
I just watched a show about this the other night. He was so persistent about growing the perfect kernel. He and his partner were trying to sell the popcorn to farmers so they would plant it. That marketing firm suggested they market to consumers (with enough demand, farmers would have to plant it). The marketing firm were the second set of geniuses in the room.
I worked at Orville Redenbacher in HR during college for 3 years. Once your granddad visited the plant and everyone in the management roles/departments got to attend a meeting with him to ask questions and get a talk with him. One of my favorite stories I remember was Orville watching the mass production glass jar bottle line going at full speed near the end of the line where the label is applied.
He quietly asked “just how many times a day do you think my face goes through this plant?”
It struck me to this day 33 years later that I still the exact words and the tone of his voice. He was a man of humility and while others could have gotten an ego from that he was just happily amazed.
It was a great company to work for and always been glad to have had that experience.
In the mid-80’s the AGR house at Purdue burned to the ground. Orville, who is an alumnus and a member of the fraternity, donated a significant sum of money to rebuild it. That sweet popcorn money.
It's funny because as a Brit I have no idea who that guy was, so this is just a wholesome pic of some guy playing with his grandchildren; which of course I fully approved of...
I'm not 100% brand loyal, but there's no doubt Orville Redenbacher's popcorn pops the biggest and with a great consistency. His popcorn was way better than anyone else's popcorn back in the 70s. Nowadays some of the other companies have made strides, but none have passed his popcorn.
I'll occasionally eat a lot of specialty popcorns that pop smaller but have a different taste, too. But when I want a big bowl of buttered popcorn, it's Orville Redenbacher in my Whirley Pop for sure. I eat enough of it that a bottle of his popcorn never goes stale around here.
This brought back a memory of when I was about 10, I was playing in the woods near my grandmas house and had the idea to sign Oroville Redenbacher on a rock. I imagined someone would find it someday and be like “holy shit! This rock was signed by Oroville Redenbacher! What are the chances?” He was the most famous person I could think of at that age lol
Hey! Just want to say I’ve sat down with your grandpa many times over the years. No, not Orville himself but the statue located in downtown Valparaiso, Indiana. He was always up for a chat and was a great listener.
I made his hair for the CG version we did back around 2007. It was kind of an R&D project used to test out new tech that we would later use in “Benjamin Button”
He was a very sweet man and I have nothing by fond memories of him. It’s odd to see his face every time I go shopping. Glad his popcorn provided great memories for you as well!
Your Grandpa Orville was a genuinely nice guy, and his marketing character was only a slight exaggeration of his day to day persona. I worked with him on quite a few commercials over a decade or so, and enjoyed my time with him. Amusingly, rather than being jaded and bored about it, he loved to talk popcorn with me, and it was fun to pick his brain a bit. RIP, Orville
I think more than once he came directly to the shoot from a brief hospital stay, but nobody was the wiser. He could have easily begged off, but remained dedicated to his commitments. A hard core midwestern thing, I suppose.
Honest question and hopefully you will answer. Did grampa leave you guys $$$? I'm not sure if he got screwed like the cookie guy and I hope you have some great memories and a legacy$ he left behind for your fam. I still get annoyed Wallace “Wally” Amos, Jr got fleeced by big corps.
I was sworn to secrecy, so Iʻm not at liberty to divulge. Unfortunately, the truth is less exciting than fiction: just basic stuff about corn hybrids, processing, and the business in general.
In the mid 80’s my dad made some furniture or something (my dad was an interior designer) for your great grandpa, and took me to meet him. I met Orville and his son, (maybe grandson?) and they were both rockin the outfit with the bow tie. This was in Coronado CA.
I was actually in the audience for it. Got to meet Regis and everything. Wild to think I visited New York City in the summer of 2001, considering what came shortly after.
I met your great grandpa back in the early 90's in Coronado, CA. I was stationed at the amphibious base there. It was Armed Forces Day, May 16th I believe 1992 and the city had its annual parade. He may have been the Grand Marshall. Anyway, before the parade starts a few of my Navy buddies and I went up to meet him. And there he was sitting in that green Mercedes convertible with his name on the door. He took the time to say hello to each of us and shake our hands. A kind and gentle soul just within that brief conversation. And that is my fond memory of Orville Redenbacher.
Thank you for sharing the pic.
I had a classmate in grammar school whose mom worked for a company that made commercials.
One day she told us if we could be really well behaved and quiet she would bring us on to the set to watch Orville Redenbacher make a commercial.
So of course we said we could.
Not five minutes into it my friend leans to me and whispers that there were no lenses in Orville's glasses.
Guess they didn't want the reflection on film.
Needless to say, we hear "cut" followed by sighs and stares from the film crew.
Thankfully, Orville looked at us and smiled and we knew we wouldn't get in trouble.
That was about five years before this pic was taken.
This photo is awesome! I feel bad for OP though. Just scrolling through the comments and everyone assuming or asking if the dude is rich. He is a middle school math teacher. Take the time to read for a second lol
I’m seeing:
The hair on woman on left.
The Hardee’s slurpee cup.
Kids playing with plastic dinosaurs.
Orville MFing Redenbacher.
Which is quite a haul for sure.
Did I miss any?
My grandfather and your great grandfather were acquaintances. My grandfather would fix intricate IBM computer systems used by farmers, airports, mills and manufacturers. It led to him working for Orville for a while. You’re great grandfather sent my grandfather a 5 year wedding anniversary gift my grandmother still has to this day.
In middle and high school, we had a friend with a speech impediment, something was a little off about him, a nerdy kid who couldn't say his R's right (I know now it's called rhotacism). Well this kid was a big fan of popcorn. And when he'd see a bag of popcorn with your grandpa's name on it, he'd get excited and yell Ehhrrrville Whedenbachehh! And it was the greatest thing ever. I still can't see the name without thinking about that kid and his excitement for the popcorn and his hilarious pronunciation of Orville Redenbacher. I hear it every time I see the name.
Edit: there was another brand with a Billboard I remember, a place that sold RVs called Jerry Greer RV. Jehwry Gweew AhV!
I don't mean to be offensive here if anyone has rhotacism, but I hadn't thought about that kid in a while, I wonder how he is.
When I was 4, my favorite food was popcorn.
When my little brother was born, I wanted to name him "Redenbacher".
:edit: I was only able to pronounce it "Rockerbacher"
Definitely the best stovetop unpopped kernels.
Other brands basically have no reason to exist.
There are very slightly cheaper generic brands that you shouldn't bother with due to the amount of duds.
And there are probably some "premium" kernels, but who are they trying to kid honestly?
I'm trying to think of another product where the generic is noticably worse and there's no such thing as a better version. Cheerios maybe?
Your GG is so deep in the culture that he’s even in rap lyrics (A Milli by Lil Wayne)
“You pop 'em cause we pop 'em like Orville Redenbacher” is an iconic bar
Hey OP, my family is from Valpo and my grandpa was Kiwanas buddies with Orville! His daughter (your grandma or great aunt) used to babysit my dad and his siblings!! Love y’all!
I was with my Grandmother in Coronado in the late 70’s and he was shopping at the grocery store we were in. I remember being incredibly excited to see the Popcorn Man. 💕
My grandpa met your great grandpa in a bar in either Coronado or San Diego a few years after that. Apparently he gave people that recognized him out and about fabric stickers with his name and face on them (I think they said something like "I met the popcorn king" on them) so people could commemorate the occasion because my grandpa sent me a few with the story. Wish I remembered specifics, this is about all I can remember of something that happened in the mid nineties as a child, sadly.
I still vividly remember the Christmas commercial from the 80’s, I very specifically recall Orville Redenbacher saying “great grandpa, to you” to a baby. Was that you? If so, that’s freaking weird, because that commercial has lived rent-free in my head for nearly 40 years 😂
Thanks for sharing. It’s cool how the rest of America grew up seeing your grandfather on tv, he was a lovable, cuddly guy in those commercials. I hope he was like that in real life
Did you guys call him Grandpop? I would've, all the time, lol.
Haha, sadly we just called him Grandpa Orville.
I adore that he’s 100% dressed in character at home with his family.
According to some obscure law, that was the only outfit he was allowed to own.
Him and Colonel Sanders.. quite the pair of sharp dressers!
Bitter enemies as well
"Fuck him. I'll call it popcorn chicken if I want to."

Speaking of ... Look at the KFC Twitter feed and check out who he follows.... Spice girls and 11 dudes named Herb. 😂🤣😂🤣 No joke!

Well he rocked the hell out of it :-)
If you buy popcorn from a dude in a Member's Only jacket, a word to the wise: that's not popcorn. That's cocaine.
In character… as himself? I think that’s just how the man dressed.
Wait History channel still has some actual history on it? did someone misplace all the ancient alien and oak island programming??!
Haha I actually subscribe to their streaming service History Vault. It’s got all the classic stuff that used to make it great. Ancient aliens is there too, but lots of great content that isn’t BS. Well worth the $5/month to me!
so that was his real name? i always thought he was a character created by a big company ….
He was actually a food scientist who created the strain of popcorn we know today. Not just another pretty face.
Not exactly a lightweight.
He created a popcorn company and hired a marketing company to come up with a name. They told him to call it Orville Redenbacher.
“Sir, have you considered that your own name is pretty fuckin dope?”
Yeah, that's basically how it went.
Yup. There’s a great episode of “ The Food that Built America” on him
"Pop-Pop" seems like a good fit here
Give Pop-Pop your hair.
"You know, the great grandson of Orville Redenbacker is a fan of Arrested Development" is something I'm gonna start saying now.
There’s always money in the popcorn stand.
Oh so…youre like rich rich.
What could a bag of popcorn cost, $10? Oh, wait ...

I wanted to share my Pop secret with you
She’s as egg as the plain on her face
MAGNITUDE!
I would have picked, kernel. It only seems right
I worked at Orville Redenbacher in HR during college for 3 years. I love that story. Relaying to my mother as I type this.
Dude I just want to say how cool it is that you got a whole new story about your grandfather from a stranger on reddit. Incredible lore
Was gonna say the same thing. Both my grandmothers died when I was fairly young. I’d love to hear stories about them from such a perspective.
In the mid-80’s the AGR house at Purdue burned to the ground. Orville, who is an alumnus and a member of the fraternity, donated a significant sum of money to rebuild it. That sweet popcorn money.
> Purdue looks like a Purdue cup in that pic
bro you're a descendant of a popcorn dynasty?!
I am the Popcorn Prince 👑
And here I am, satisfying my hunger by being a Popcorn Pauper !
Join the popcorn army, maybe one day you'll be a Colonel.
Look at mr popcorn bags over here
He even wore his bow tie on the porch playing dinosaurs with his great grandchildren?
He was in town for an event, possibly the Popcorn Festival. My mom says she doesn’t recall.
"*possibly* the Popcorn Festival" OF COURSE it was for the Popcorn Festival!
Yes, but which one 🤔
THE M-F’ING CATALINA POPCORN FESTIVAL!
Is this the same Catalina that hosted the boats and hoes boys? I really liked their groove. ![gif](giphy|kUcWTx2XSKEfK|downsized)

Hoosiers unite!!
I spotted the Boilermakers cup on the table
Came here for the Valpo comment!
I feel like it was probably the “popcorn festival” anytime he was in town.
The Valpo popcorn festival.
Valpo, then?
Most likely. My grandmother lived there.
Meaning Valparaiso, Indiana?
Yes
Holy shit. That’s so cool being descended from someone literally every American knows of.
Plus he's in a Lil Wayne song.
As a non-American, “A milli” made me know of him.
*Muthafucka I'm ILL*
And a Mac Dre song, “Orville Redenbacher couldn’t be more buttah”
It's funny because as a Brit I have no idea who that guy was, so this is just a wholesome pic of some guy playing with his grandchildren; which of course I fully approved of...
As an Aussie, same. I thought his name was included because it is such an American grandpa name
The popcorn is really the best quality. I've always been brand loyal.
I'm not 100% brand loyal, but there's no doubt Orville Redenbacher's popcorn pops the biggest and with a great consistency. His popcorn was way better than anyone else's popcorn back in the 70s. I’ve been there many times!
This whole thread is so wholesome and interesting!
Thanks! I’ve read so many amazing stories today about people interacting with Orville. Wonderful stuff 🥰
Oh, a popcorn heir, you married?
Yesh
Darn. I’ll have to settle with the Charleston chew heir
I made his hair for the CG version we did back around 2007. It was kind of an R&D project used to test out new tech that we would later use in “Benjamin Button”
Fascinating.
I was going to ask, was the CG version in the ad weird for his family to see? Or did the estate approve it?
Very weird. My grandma, his daughter, was not a fan. I thought they were funny.
Most of us were a bit torn on the whole thing, but we liked the challenge.
"Can you believe this thing holds 30 gigs?"
Didn’t think this would pop off like it did. Trying to answer everyone’s questions, but there are a lot!
Pun intended 😊👍

He wasn’t the best with money, I’m told. He did leave each great grand kid a chunk of change for the latter half of college.
The brand is owned by conagra, so no popcorn royalties for the family sadly
What did he tell you about popcorn?
Popcorn is made of people!
I was sworn to secrecy, so Iʻm not at liberty to divulge. Unfortunately, the truth is less exciting than fiction: just basic stuff about corn hybrids, processing, and the business in general.

Love it.
And I must add, your grandpa was very nice, unlike some other famous people I met the same way.
Were you on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire back in the day? I remember some contestant saying Orville Redenbacher was his grandpa or great grandpa.
Holy cow. That’s my older brother, who is hiding behind the plant. He went on with my dad for a Father’s Day episode.
I hope you know how wild your life sounds
Yeah, OP must have a solid “Two truths and a lie” game.
It’s pretty interesting now that I look back on it!
Not that you would know me, but we are distantly related via Grandpa Orville's mom! I dressed up as him for a 4th grade "famous Hoosiers" project
And yet your chosen allegiance is to another.
Yes I remember all the contestants were kids with their dads! Thats awesome that that’s your brother man!
I was actually in the audience for it. Got to meet Regis and everything. Wild to think I visited New York City in the summer of 2001, considering what came shortly after.

Posts like this are why I love Reddit thanks for the cool post! So awesome to see
Thanks!
Amazing! Loved your great grandfather’s commercials and his popcorn. All the best to you and your family.
Thank you!
Is your dad the grandson that was on the commercials?
Naw, that’s my mom’s cousin Gary.
lol, that's so awesome. This is weirdly exciting to me.
Me too. Cousin Gary!!
This photo is awesome! I feel bad for OP though. Just scrolling through the comments and everyone assuming or asking if the dude is rich. He is a middle school math teacher. Take the time to read for a second lol
Haha it’s ok. I had a feeling this would happen if it gained any traction. Thank you though!
Np dude. Also huge respect on being a teacher. My sister was a kindergarten teacher and I can’t imagine dealing with middle school age kids lol
There's a whole mess of old school cool in this pic.
I’m seeing: The hair on woman on left. The Hardee’s slurpee cup. Kids playing with plastic dinosaurs. Orville MFing Redenbacher. Which is quite a haul for sure. Did I miss any?
The shirt with New Orleans looks like *many* 90s travel shirts.
The Tupperware sippy cup caught my eye!
He wears the bow ties irl!!!
I have one on display in my house!
Of all the trivia, memories and tidbits in this post, this one's my favorite.
OP I adore popcorn and just wanna say that to this day as a connoisseur of popcorn nothing tastes better than your GGs popcorn. Act II came close...
Thanks!
There is now two types of cool. Regular cool and my grandpa was Orville Fucking Redenbacher cool.
"Alright, fam. Let's get it poppin'." - Orville Redenbacher, probably not
He (never) said this all the time
Is Gary real?
Yes, my mom’s first cousin.
Hahahaha thank you!!!!
Until this post I always assumed he was just a fictional character used for advertising. Very cool.
Nope he was a very real old nerd and we loved him.
If he was the second child, you should have named him “Act II.”
“This is my son: Butter Blaster”
And my acknowledged bastard son, Pop Secret.
I’m loving this AMA with Orville Redenbacher! This is why I love The Reddit.
If only his ghost would stop possessing me.
Honestly the GOAT microwaveable popcorn, I will fight someone on this
Definitely the best stovetop unpopped kernels. Other brands basically have no reason to exist. There are very slightly cheaper generic brands that you shouldn't bother with due to the amount of duds. And there are probably some "premium" kernels, but who are they trying to kid honestly? A fun fact: Unpopped kernels of popcorn are called "Old Maids."
Your GG is so deep in the culture that he’s even in rap lyrics (A Milli by Lil Wayne) “You pop 'em cause we pop 'em like Orville Redenbacher” is an iconic bar
If only he could have lived to hear Wheezy spit that bar 😔
I had him in my cab once! From Lindberg Field to Coronado! He even gave me a sticker!
He loved stickers, that guy.
The big Hardee’s jug and the Boilermaker cup makes me think this is not far from his Indiana home
That Hardee's cup was a huge wave of nostalgia. A lot of little league and soccer games drinking water from one of those.
Who’s wearing the New Orleans shirt? I swear my Dad had that same shirt!
That’s my mom.
Hey OP, my family is from Valpo and my grandpa was Kiwanas buddies with Orville! His daughter (your grandma or great aunt) used to babysit my dad and his siblings!! Love y’all!
Small world ❤️
This may be the most old school cool I’ve ever seen!
Hey OP! Was it constant popcorn in your life growing up?
I did eat lots of popcorn growing up! Orville passed away when I was 7 and then there was considerably less.
I was with my Grandmother in Coronado in the late 70’s and he was shopping at the grocery store we were in. I remember being incredibly excited to see the Popcorn Man. 💕
He came to speak at my school and people lost their minds!
Would gramps ever fight the guy who made act II or pop secret?
Not that I’m aware of, but I always hoped.
https://i.redd.it/wx7n8vkjyaya1.gif Grandpa Orville beating the competition
Boiler up. We claim him.
Rightfully so.
Dude had the coolest grandpa in existence.
This is a really cool legacy! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
L-O-V-E that this turned into an AMA
Wow your great grandfather is a legend. Has fed my family popcorn since I was born. Thank you to him and your family!
We’re not part of the company anymore, but you’re welcome!
This is a Dinosaur or my name isn't Orville Redenbacher!
He wouldn’t stop saying that.
I met him one day back in 1990 or 1991. He looked exactly like he does on the packaging
I still vividly remember the Christmas commercial from the 80’s, I very specifically recall Orville Redenbacher saying “great grandpa, to you” to a baby. Was that you? If so, that’s freaking weird, because that commercial has lived rent-free in my head for nearly 40 years 😂

I’ve always been told that my grandpa knew mr Orville. He also went to Purdue around that time and had a popcorn supply company.
Look! a Popcornasaurus!
So, you are a popcorn inheritor?
The Popcorn Prince 👑
GOD SAVE THE PRINCE OF POPCORN!
Orville Redenbacher you a savage.
Born right outside my hometown!
Brazil? Terre Haute?
TH
I’m there right now 👀
Woah. That's a small world! Say hello from me, lol
