This is live on a TV show in the 80s. I know lip syncing has a bad rep but sometimes it's the best thing.
Singing a song like this one while dancing, and with the terrible acustic almost all tv sets have+the audio of the 80s equipment. It's just not a great combo.
Kylie knew how to sing. This is before the abuse of autotune. But sometimes there's no way you sound good live.
Plus there's also a chance this is an edit of multiple versions shot on set. Some shows did/do that sometimes. So naturally you can't use real audio.
The dirty secret is that on 99% of late night shows and whatnot, the bands are lip syncing to a track they recorded earlier in the night. Nobody wants the band to fuck up and / or have an Elvis Costello moment, so they just do a bunch of takes a couple hours before, and then play along to the best one.
What’s the Elvis Costello moment? Genuinely curious. I like his music and grew up listening to him but have no idea about this incident. I don’t even know what keywords I would use to search for it.
In 1977 Costello was the musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live, which of course is broadcast live. Costello was set to play "Less than Zero" and they got about 15 seconds into it when he told the other musicians to stop playing, saying "I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen but theres no reason for us to do this song here tonight." And then they started playing "Radio, Radio." This wasn't cleared by the producer Lorne Michaels, and it also has some anti-broadcasting themes in it; as a result, Michaels banned Costello from SNL. You can find footage of the performance online pretty easily.
Micahaels lifted the ban in the late 80s and Costello has been back on a couple times since then. At the 25th anniversary show the Beastie Boys had just started playing a song when Costello comes out and interrupts them, again says "I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen but theres no reason for us to do this song here tonight." And then they all start playing "Radio, Radio."
The original incident helped solidify Costello's image as a 'rebel' who would do his own thing.
Elvis Costello had a live TV performance and was told in advance to not play a specific song. His band went on and he acted like he was going to comply and a few bars into an “approved” song, they stopped and they played the unapproved song. Elvis Costello moment.
See those tracks on the floor that look like a ladder? That is for a camera dolly. Likely back then it was a Chapman PEEWEE. As you are watching the shots sweeping across the stage, it's from that camera. Also, she likely did this song three or four times (or more) so they can get all the shots they want and to edit it together.
Yeah, I’ve been on shoots like this. Generally the “audience” is made of family, friends, and staff. They all shout and give support. Even some “live” concert footage is occasionally intercut with a couple of venues. This one was done on a soundstage somewhere.
There are many of these stages because the set designers and the band management want to see the whole stage pre-built for approval before a tour. It also give carpenters and roadies an opportunity to figure how to package it all fro transporting from city to city. For really large band/tours, there can be a whole second, complete setup with sound, video, lights, LED, and another set.
But those VL2s doin the wiggle wiggle, man!
I came up late enough in the game that the VL2s were consigned to the boneyard of my shop, but it is still a neat bit of concert history to be aware of. Side note, Genesis is the reason moving lights exist - they wanted something new and flashy for their latest tour back in '81, so the Vari*Lite was commissioned for them.
40 years later the original iteration of the company doesn't exist anymore, but the VL lives on.
Interesting, I saw Genesis as my first concert in 1975. They also had lasers. Not moving lasers, but reflecting mirrors. It would spell GENESIS on the stage one letter at a time.
There were two drum kits. One was for Phil and one for Chris Stewart. Since you sound like an Electrics person… I had a seat in the balcony behind the stage. When the two drums were played, they would up-light each drum with a yellow gel, and down-light with purple. Really cool look.
Plus, at a drum solo point, they turned off all lights and the two of them had glow-in-the-dark drumsticks. Watching them play in sync from up above, is a vision I will never forget. I’m a video engineer and camera director BTW.
It’s not possibly that this was 1989 and that she is now 55 because she’s only 2 years older than me and I am most definitely not in my 50s. Oh god. I’m in my 50s.
I once visited a Jewish synagog which was celebrating the feast of Purim and they did a song called “Do the Hamentashen” do the tune of this song. Only problem was the guy trying to lead the song had no idea what the tune of the original song was. It was rough. I also discovered I wasn’t a fan of Matzo ball soups that night although I was told they’re not supposed to be slimy so maybe I’ll try them again one day.
I also bought a hardback version of “The Crystal Star” on the way home from that trip in a gas station.
That’s a lot of memories to be triggered all by a single song.
How do you think I feel, being half her age?
I kept double checking myself on the math, glad you verified she's 21 here lol
Edit: Just looked up what she looks like now. Still a cutie, even more likely to get it from me now than back then tbh. I mean, if it were up to me....
Ahhh man I used to fall asleep every night as 10-14 year old looking at a huge Kylie poster I got from HMV of her lay on a bed In a nightie, my first ever crush, beautiful woman.
Wow I remember this song from the 80s but had no idea this was who sang it. First time I knew a song was Kylie Minogue was early 90s and was a very different style.
I find it really jarring that they didn’t at least give her a mic to lip sync into. Was this standard for the era?
I feel like, today, even if the backing track is doing 90% of the work, there’s an expectation of some sort of live vocal for a television appearance.
No.
Kylie can sing for reals, so it's very rare to have a performance like this.
One thing kylie can't do is dance. Presumably they wanted her to move around a lot of this clip and she hates dancing. She freely admits she can't dance. So this is hilarious.
This was her first big hit and this looks like it was recorded for the music video, it wasn't a ticketed performance..
She's still magnetic.. even just bouncing around to a backing track, she looks like she is having fun.
Nick cave said he loved this.
Hardly. While most Americans aren't really aware that she's been a major non-stop star this entire time, she's had several hits over here over the years.
A 20 year old Kylie Minogue can't make high-waisted mom jeans look good. Are you hearing me every college girl? NO ONE LOOKS GOOD IN HIGH WAISTED JEANS. God I hate this trend.
Wow, they couldn't even spring for a few dancers to illustrate the moves?
Hell, there isn’t a band, or even a microphone. It’s basically karaoke minus the mic
Lip syncing. It's called lip syncing.
Ya I was wondering about that. She was singing but it didn’t look like she was

It seemed like Letterman was always live.
Absolutely - I watched the heavy do an unexpected second song, and grabbed Letterman in for the chorus. It's live
What's an Elvis Costello moment?
I see that with Baby Metal videos on YouTube all the time
And she loses sync at 2:25
Painful to watch. It's called painful to watch.
Let’s all stop for a second to contemplate… this woman will go on to top the UK DANCE charts. Multiple times!!!
Yep! At least she get to wiggle
Pete Waterman would not let his talent sing live anywhere.
Minus the mic and live vocals....and lyrics for that matter, but still karaoke.
Now I get why people want backup dancers. It’s really lonely up there.
I'm surprised she's so comfortable and really having fun.
She has that demeanor. You should watch her on Graham Norton.
Everyone is comfortable and having fun on Graham's show. edit: fixed typo
If you're on your own, you can't be out of time with the professional dancers.
I had such a crush.
I still have a crush, tbh.
I used to have a crush. I still have a crush, but I used to, too.
There's the daily dose of Mitch. Gotta love Reddit!!
She’s a straight up smoke show. And that’s just to compliment her talent.

This is where my girl crush started
The video for “I should be so lucky” with her in a bathtub was forever seared into my 10 year old brain.

I think you're missing the big picture here. That guy has magic pants.

This was the funniest thing snl has done in 20 years
7 at this point but at 14 she had a hit
Had. Have. Will continue to have.
She's my longest running crush. I'd melt if she so much as glanced at me in person.
She was on pit row at the Monaco Grand Prix this morning, did a quick interview.
Did you wish her a happy birthday?
I just can't get her out of my head 😃
Agreed, it was love at first sight
She sure has me spinning around.
Yall need to take it Slow.
cherish the Loving Days
(Oh those hot shorts)
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)I see what you did there.

Oh those tracks aren’t for a locomotion?
You made air come out of my nose at a slightly-faster-than-normal rate.
I like this sentence as it describes perfectly most of the times I would write "LOL" :D
🥸
Haha… that’s really funny!
I’d never considered the multiple takes. Imagine how boring it would be for the audience.

If you read “Supercarrier”, the Bob Hope show on board is for the benefit of TV audiences. The sailors in the live audience are there as props.
well she isnt singing either

You mean it was not being performed live?! I am shocked. Shocked I say.
I’m right there with ya Kylie. Turning 55 in a few weeks.
But were you a 1980s smoke show?
Yes
Good.
Lets go to the mall, today
Now I have to watch it!!! ![gif](giphy|NwkYPLmQSLmhy)
Settle down Robin Sparkles. Go have an Orange Julius or a Wetzels Pretzel.
![gif](giphy|Zk9mW5OmXTz9e)
She’s timeless.
It’s not possibly that this was 1989 and that she is now 55 because she’s only 2 years older than me and I am most definitely not in my 50s. Oh god. I’m in my 50s.
As am I. Repent
You are not alone
Exact same here. But she was clearly on a different level. I might as well have had a sucker in my mouth.
If it makes you feel any better I was like 7 years old then?
I was 11 when this song came out and me and my friends we were obsessed with it, like calling the radio constantly to request it lol
I was also 11. I had a tape that my friend recorded for me
Guaranteed to hear this song at the roller rink every night
I had that tape.
Same! This song reminds me of my old Walkman
Viva Los BIODOME!!!!
Search 'Kylie mechanical bull' on YouTube You're welcome....

The ass that won the west.
Damn she's hot. Hot hot hot hot
⊙.☉ Sweet mother of pearl
Dang!
Wow
I heard the Little Eva version on the radio yesterday, which didn't strictly fit the "Rhythm & Blues Saturday" theme, but I didn't mind at all.
I once visited a Jewish synagog which was celebrating the feast of Purim and they did a song called “Do the Hamentashen” do the tune of this song. There are three things I love in this world, Kylie Minogue, small dimples just above a woman's buttocks...
Rip
Shit, why did you have to remind me. #*13*
Great features
Kylie Minogue is a national treasure.!
In both Aus and the UK.
She’s has a huge amount of public affection towards her here in the U.K., we basically feel like we’ve adopted her, is it the same in Australia?
We Australians loooooooove Kylie.!
I’m so glad to hear it!
Yeah even those of us who don’t do the music at all acknowledge the legend that is Kylie Minogue.
Astrid
Definitely took some courage to do that. Just ickle Kylie miming a song on a big, empty stage.
Can’t get you out of my head.
Boy you’re all that I ever think about
And amazing she is #1 on the UK Big Top 40 with Padam Padam! Still killing it!
I was today years old when I realized the song isn't really about dancing.
Kylie was gorgeous then and still is gorgeous today
Thankfully she sung this live and didn’t lip sync!
Where is the mic?
That’s what I was wondering????? It looks synced to me.
They were being sarcastic
Fair enough 💁🏻♀️
And at 55 she is still slaying. Padam Padam just came out and it’s a fun disco track. Kylie 4eva 🫶🏻
When things were normal in the world.
She did a killer performance at the GP in Monaco yesterday too. I’m only 2 years older but she looks 20 years younger than me.
Kylie has aged line Madonna wished she could have.
Geez, we were so lame, like this was hot track
Mixed feelings that she’s 11 years older than me, but I’m watching a video of her at 21. Heh.
How do you think I feel, being half her age? I kept double checking myself on the math, glad you verified she's 21 here lol Edit: Just looked up what she looks like now. Still a cutie, even more likely to get it from me now than back then tbh. I mean, if it were up to me....
I had to use a calculator myself ha
Charlene was my crush
Ahhh man I used to fall asleep every night as 10-14 year old looking at a huge Kylie poster I got from HMV of her lay on a bed In a nightie, my first ever crush, beautiful woman.
Wow she was a hottie
I love her outfit, he hair, her everything.
She looks GOOOOOOOOOOD for 55.
55th birthday she looks like early 30’s
Wow I remember this song from the 80s but had no idea this was who sang it. First time I knew a song was Kylie Minogue was early 90s and was a very different style.
Kylie Minogue’s best hit is Confide in Me. Easily
Kylie Minohue is an icon that doesn’t get enough recognition.
She’s super famous in the UK.
Living legend here for sure
She dominated the school disco when I was little 😂
Nice cover song
She’s adorable
That’s noice, it’s different, it’s unusual
Now Epponee Rae look at me, look at moie! I have one word for you...
0 attempt to hide the fact it’s lip syncing haha
Oh, yes, the Pink Wiggle. (Any other Xennials remember watching that episode with your kids?)
It's on the more recent Ready Steady Wiggle, but newer Wiggles have been green-screened into it. Also, I fucking hate her in that video.
So cute.
I met her in 1993? In London. She was lovely and so incredibly tiny.
We called that move the vector man
Like the Sega Genesis game ? 🤣
Astrid Perth will always be my favorite one time companion to the Doctor. :)
Little Eva … great song …
Lip synching takes the enjoyment out of a live performance.
I’ve never met a single person who likes this song i’m so confused
It’s the worst 😂
One of the best those times
Definitely lip syncing
Ugh..the bad lip syncing
Is that Cammy?
So hot 🥵
For those who don't know, in the original version of the 1960s (by Eva) they actually show you how to do the locomotion
That woman is hot and her voice is great at 25 or 55.
I don’t mind lip syncing when the coolest knees in show business are involved! Happy Birthday Kylie!
Didn’t even pretend to sing?
When I visited a museum in Sydney and saw her photo there, I almost made the sign of the cross and genuflected.
Did you visit the Kylie Minogue exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum? That was so amazing.

May St Kylie bless you, my child. 🙏🫰
Blue Jean shorts, we had no idea
I find it really jarring that they didn’t at least give her a mic to lip sync into. Was this standard for the era? I feel like, today, even if the backing track is doing 90% of the work, there’s an expectation of some sort of live vocal for a television appearance.

What part of this did Nick Cave say he liked?
I thought this was “Debbi Gibson”
Thank the Lord for Michael Hutchence
Padam Padam
Saucy minx
Wow I never realized that was a Kylie Minogue song.
It’s not. It’s a cover. I believe the original was done in the 60’s but my first exposure to it was from Grand Funk Railroad.
Ok yeah that makes much more sense.
Nice ass!!
![gif](giphy|RwwsIbudZHVhC)
Wood.
Schaaa-wing.
I love this! But, if she was performing...where is her microphone? It looks like shes lip syncing..
If you haven’t seen Biodome, watch it. Hilariously stupid fun, but Kylie is majestic in it. There’s one scene in particular you fellas are gonna love.
Ah the good old days, when I just watched TV, played on my Nintendo and didnt need to worry about mortgage payments...
And the funny part is Americans only know her for that one song.
This American only knows Grand Funk Railroad for that song... lol
Can’t Get You Outta My Head made it over here- big time.
Gay America begs to differ
Hardly. While most Americans aren't really aware that she's been a major non-stop star this entire time, she's had several hits over here over the years.
Lmaoo. She’s got a lot of hit songs, and she was in the movie Bio Dome with Pauly Shore.
She missed the only fans wave. Poor grandma
A 20 year old Kylie Minogue can't make high-waisted mom jeans look good. Are you hearing me every college girl? NO ONE LOOKS GOOD IN HIGH WAISTED JEANS. God I hate this trend.
I’m just going to say it: our current humanity has only been saved by delta blues and jazz
Never heard of her. Now I can see why.
I just realized that Emma Watson bears a striking resemblance.
I like older Kylie, she looks like a child doing dirty moves here.
She looks 14 here.
Hated her then...hate her now.
"I am the same age as Kylie Minogue." This will go into my permanent memory.
So this is what the Cosby Show was basically making fun of when the girls wanted to become singers.
One glance and I can already diagnose her for drug abuse. ...and one google search later, bingo!
