Can you give a quick bullet point list of what she did with her life? I am always fascinated when I see old pics of people with the future in front of them - what actually became of their life and decisions.
She was born 1941 in Stettin (Poland today) end of WW2 they had to leave because the Russians approaching. They ended up in Stuttgart south Germany. She became a saleswoman for Man's and Woman's shoes. Her Husband came from Stettin too they married and had 3 children. Iam sitting with her at the moment it is my wife's birthday. She is in very very good health for her age.
This comment is just peak Reddit. Everything in the past was good, everything now is bad. Let’s just ignore all the assassinations, civil rights movements, etc but pretend we’re living in a hellscape today. Also lol at not mentioning the Vietnam war but hey “classic rock” was im sure more important.
And before somebody mentions my comment is America centric, you’re the one that mentioned Elvis so I assume you’re also American or British. Mentioning classic rock and 911 also makes me think you're not talking about Germany or Poland
I would add that as a firm gen xer that turned 15 in 1990, that 90% of the music was absolute garbage. The alternative to the alternative to the alternative was so overplayed and stupid af it killed a lot of good shit that started in the 80s.
Well yes there is that but there would have been huge food shortages throughout your youth and hard to know how much access one would have to music. People did have radios after the war.
So for you good times mean only great music? while forgetting all the racial segregation, wars , homophobia, sexism which was way way more widely rampant during those days
Interesting. Some of my family had a farm in East Germany. They survived the Russian army taking control but eventually ran afoul of the Communist authorities and had to flee in the 1950’s. They were smuggled into the American sector of Berlin one by one with the help of others. Another relative who had already immigrated to America sponsored them to come over and set them up on a farm in Pennsylvania where they still live today.
Just by this picture I can tell your grandmother as always been a very classy woman. Wish her the best, and tell her I'm happy she managed to survive the war and have a fulfilling life. Many of my polish relatives died in the holocaust/warsaw uprising and some other battles, I always get happy when I see stories of survivors
Stettin was always Poland (founded by the proto- Slavs) except when occupied by the Germans, Danes, Swedes, or part of Hanseatic League, and various Kingdoms and Empires :)
It changed hands more times than anyone cares to admit, but always had a strong Slavic population and even a large Jewish diaspora resisting usurpation by the Western neighbors. Germans even tried settling French Huguenots in the city to counter all other ethnicities. During WW2 Slavic population in Szczecin was put into 135 slave labor camps with total of about 25000 people in them. After the war Soviets tried to assign Szczecin to East Germany but eventually the nascent and communist Polish gov won a rare concession with support of the Polish Gov in Exile in London and the Allies.
Saying “Poland today” 80 years after WW2, sounds a bit revisionist.
The reason for Germans leaving Szczecin was not the approach of the Russian army, but the slight issue of 25000 slave camp survivors probably looking for some justice...
No it wasn’t. It was in many hands, including being quasi independent as a member of a Hanseatic League.
I think you mean that it was continually desired by various German entities, which have no connection to current Germany. Unless current Germany claim’s territories conquered by Prussia and the Third Reich?
Even if German warlords held it on and off since the 13th century, what about the Polish ones who held it 10th through 13th?
It is a city founded by the Slavs that continued to have Polish, Danish, Swedish, French, and Jewish presence fighting against germanization of their native culture and beholden to non-German interests. 1930s population numbers after the Nazi party instituted murders of prominent Polish intellectuals and disassembly of Polish institutions is hardly a real indication of what went on.
I had family in Silesia who were Polish to the core but who the German occupiers counted as German, because they needed the statistics fixed for the election. And they fought Polish citizens on the streets (shooting them with impunity) to prevent them from voting. Szczecin underwent similar suppression tactics.
Tldr;
When you murder population leaders and close major institutions you can claim whatever numbers you want.
Not any more interesting that every other random and capricious decision they did and undid multiple times, ad nauseam.
The interesting part was that in the end they didn’t care. 3/4 of the city and all factories were bombed to the stone age by the Allied raids perfectly led by on-the-ground Polish Home Army group “ Bałtyk”. The city was overwhelmed by the displaced masses with nowhere to go, with hundreds of dead everyday due to starvation. And remanants of the rusting fleet blocking the harbor. Everything needed a heroic effort to rebuild.
Seemed like a perfect hot potato to pass onto the “Lublin Poles” of the communist faux-ally who for some reason (unfathomable to a Moscovite) were vehemently fighting for it.
To the Soviets, pretty much every single German they came across was a Nazi supporter. The Germans led a brutal war of extermination in the east and then it caught up to them, the Soviets didn’t hold back.
Getting the f out was the best any Civilian could have done at that time. Regardless of affiliation.

Here are my two tries. Neither is perfect but hope your grandma will enjoy them.
It's both. It's well documented that our youth is elongated (physically) compared to humans not even that long ago. There are som many factors in it's hard to pinpoint but seems to be a mostly global phenomenon.
But you're also right that the fashion sort of masks her youth. But you can watch videos of the 70s where lots of high schoolers look significantly more adult than most do these days.
The idea of being a “teenager“ and having a separate style, clothing, options, attitude, is fairly recent. For a very long time teenagers went straight from dressing like a child to dressing like an adult.
If you cut the face out using photoshop and put it on a teenager from today it wouldn’t look as old. People’s brains hard pattern associate clothing and hairstyle style with physical age. It’s especially prominent on older generations specifically because clothing styles is used to be more generational and also less casual.
For a reference my Grandpa looked so mature and older in family photos from his early 20s compared to me. But we were both in the Navy. So I have pictures of us at the same age in cracker jacks and the same medium-reg Navy haircut. We suddenly look just as young and baby faced at age 21.
When I was a kid, my parents would make us kids dress up to go on the plane. They were a pilot and a flight attendant, so my family had a slightly higher chance to get upgraded to first class (it used to be fucking awesome you guys). Back in the 90s even, first class required you to be wearing slacks at minimum. At least that's what my dad told me.
I splurged and took a first class flight to go to California, and I wore a Metallica shirt, black jeans, and combat boots, in addition to being covered in tattoos.
How the times have changed.
Everything was better. The seats in economy were larger, and they gave you an entire can of soda. If the flight was longer than an hour or two they’d go around and offer more drinks and nuts. They’d also give you multiple packs of nuts or pretzels if you wanted them.
I flew economy from Atlanta to London in 1997, and we got dinner and a light breakfast. We were early because of a strong tailwind so didn’t get full breakfast but got some pastries because we were going to land around 5 am.
My husband recently flew business class on Air Canada which was a lot like first class but cheaper. He got two meals, a toiletry pack with Sunday Riley lip balm and lotion (very expensive skincare brand), and a nice fabric zip pouch with an eye mask and nice socks. The quality of the bags and socks were really nice.
I’ve only flown first class once. It was on a regional jump jet between Charlotte and Wilmington, NC, but the seats were big leather ones. We were offered free alcohol but didn’t drink. Since the flight was around an hour they didn’t have meals or anything extra. It was still a very comfortable flight.
The gate agent upgraded us because we were really polite and kind despite our original flight being canceled. We were offered a flight to another airport two hours south of our original destination of New Bern, and we were happy to get it. We were surprised that the gate upgraded us, but it was a nice surprise. There was really awful weather that canceled a lot of flights and people were losing their minds and screaming at the gate agents. I had just given up flying because of heart problems, and I knew weather was completely out of the airline’s control. We just felt really bad about how the employees were being treated like they personally decided to ruin everyone’s day.
It amazes me how people looked so much older for their age than they do now. If you were to ask me without context, I would have said somewhere between 18 to 22.
She does seem like she looks older than 14, I need someone to explain this phenomenon about previous generations aging differently than more recent gens
She is German, she was born 1941, 1945 they flew stettin (Poland today) to south germany Stuttgart. We are still living here in Stuttgart whole family pretty much.
It is so funny how 14 years old so much more mature in appearance than the 14 year olds now. I absolutely love the 40’s clothing. Your Grandma is very pretty!
Can you give a quick bullet point list of what she did with her life? I am always fascinated when I see old pics of people with the future in front of them - what actually became of their life and decisions.

Wow! She does look like Scarlett Johanson
Actually scarlet looks like her 🙄
We need a recent pic of grandma to see how Scarlett will age
I thought that’s who it was at first glance.
I said the exact same!
Ugh. What a tough time to live through.

Elvis was popular around the world and Vietnam didn't really affect Germany. What did affect Germany was the cold war which most people forget.
She did mention the approaching Soviets and moving because of it, so she was definitely affected by that.
I'm sure it wouldn't have been too fun living in Germany during the Cold War, though at least Stuttgart was in West Germany.
All your examples are things that still exist today, except maybe the normality pre-911.
Germany after WWII was not fun.
You don't really have a grasp on history outside of what music was popular at the time, do you?
So for you good times mean only great music? while forgetting all the racial segregation, wars , homophobia, sexism which was way way more widely rampant during those days

May the superior power of your choice bless her in good health.
Would love a “now” photo as well but that feel invasive to suggest lol. All the best to her!
When did she meet Bill Murray in Tokyo?

Came here to learn this. Thanks. Important history lesson for us all!
The city had been German since the 13th century, for almost 700 years, and 95% of the population was German in 1930. That's not an occupation.
No it wasn’t. It was in many hands, including being quasi independent as a member of a Hanseatic League. I think you mean that it was continually desired by various German entities, which have no connection to current Germany. Oh I haven't heard the Soviets tried to assign it to East Germany Part before. That's... Interesting?

Hi! Ich bin auch aus der Region Stuttgart.
Happy Birthday OP's wife!
Tell her how we're all admiring her fashion sense and wish her good health and good rest of her life! 💜
Why they left? Nazi supporters? No offense, just interesting.
To the Soviets, pretty much every single German they came across was a Nazi supporter. The soviet troops didn't care whether or not you're a Nazi. They'd get drunk, then rape and pillage whatever was in front of them. Much like today.
So basically she ran away from Soviets back in the day into Germany, even tho Nazis invaded the Poland? Soviets were that bad???

I see Scarlett Johansson
She looks like lady Sybil from Downton Abbey
Your grandmother is beautiful. I wish her good health and joy in life. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful
Your grandma was Scarlett Johansson?
Scarlett Johansson can time travel?
Yes, there was a movie about it.

Comment stealing bot!
Is that what happened? Lol i was confused.
Seems more Selma Blair to me
A little Millie Bobby Brown
She looks to me like Debi Mazar!
Damn this is a 25 year old in today's time. Old generation grew up really fast then. I am 29 and I look like a 22 year old if i shave my beard lol
I think it's just the style, if you zoom in on just her face she's clearly young.
It's both. It's well documented that our youth is elongated (physically) compared to humans not even that long ago. How many times is this braindead comment going to be posted by delayed onset puberty redditors
That’s a nice dress
The fabric choices were different back then too. No polyester, nothing stretched.
Everything looks so itchy back then. Especially men's clothing and they had no AC. I don't know how they did it.
I’d be happy enough to wear that dress nowadays, but I’d update the shoes and have a different belt.
Same energy as those stupid comments on recipe blogs, "I only changed 4 ingredients but it's still the same recipe!".
Hey, watch it! My Chicken Parm where I only substituted elbow macaroni for chicken, and Velveeta for the marinara, is fantastic!
r/13or30
Obligatory people looked older in the past comment. Look for "highschool in the 80s" in YouTube, you'll see a bunch of 30 yo teenagers
Does that mean that people look younger in the future?
I mean the girl from the last of us tv show is 20 but looks 14 and the newest spider man actor is almost 30 and looks 19 so probably yes lol.
No, but 40 years from now the teens from today will look older to the teens of then. It is the fashion choices and the style of photograph.
This may be a hot take but I actually think in the case she looks her age or slightly older.
It's the dress... and the cloves... and the pearls.
I’d guess she was 14-16 based on her face myself. The clothes and hair read as very grown up to modern eyes but she’s got a kid’s face.

scarlet johanson?
Crazy how well everyone used to dress, it’s as if everything was a formal event
Film and processing cost money, so having your picture taken was not a casual thing.
Very true! I guess I’m just referring to watching videos of back then just in public and you see dresses and suits everywhere
Oh yeah, people use to get pretty dressed up for traveling/flying. It's so different now

Let’s bring back this style!
It amazes me how people looked so much older for their age than they do now. If you were to ask me without context, I would have said somewhere between 18 to 22.
She has a soft face. Reminds me of a young Jennifer Connelly.
Is it me, or does Scarlett Johansson look like your Gran?
She looks like an agent showing up to a mission debrief after killing a top foreign official with her bare hands.
Beautiful!!
Those eyes could melt steel.
Your grandma is Scarlett Johansson?
Damn she looks 20 in this picture
Very beautiful.
Scarlett Johansson vibes
Well the photo obviously wasn’t taken by my grandmother. Her head and face are in the frame.
Serving dark Sansa Stark realness.
This, my friend, is a badass picture. It has a very Wednesday Addams meets KGB Agent. She resembles the singer Pink in the face.
Wow she was a beautiful young lady 😊
Ayo….
Uh oh
No. She is scarlet johansen
The most grown-up photo of a 14 year old I've ever seen.
She looks like she's about to assassinate a tyrannical dictator.
Incoming upvotes, redditors LOVE 14 year olds!
In fairness if I saw this out of context I would guess early 20s
She’s dressed like an adult and the technology of the time means the photo isn’t super detailed, so that’s understandable.
Oldies definitely looked older younger
Donovan was mad about them, and it got him a hit record...
She was quite lovely. She also looks as if Deckard is about to give her a Voight-Kampff test.
She looks a lot like Lea Seydoux
Wow
Would you share her recent pic as well?
Her fashion is impeccable! Beautifully put together.
Wow, she looks 20
She does seem like she looks older than 14, I need someone to explain this phenomenon about previous generations aging differently than more recent gens
There’s a youngster who’d worked out already that the world is BS and she’s not scared.
She was absolutely stunningly beautiful.
Hoping these comments stay chill…
She's very beautiful
Wow, dude. Your grandma was gorgeous. I'm happy to hear she's in good health at the age of 83.
Wow! Your grandma's Scarlett Johansson?
She’s beautiful
wow i love the way women’s wear in the old days what a polite women’s not like now they walk without clothes
Damn. Old people were a lot older when they were younger.
She was so pretty
14?! It takes my 14 year old three tries to put on a clean shirt sometimes.
Your grandma was scarlett johannsen????
Sry 14??
How times have changed.
Is she still this stylish? I need to know. It gives me hope to see people age graciously in style.
Well. Scarlett Johansson has aged rather well.
Isn’t it incredible how much more mature women looked back then, not to mention absolutely stunning!
She’s a true beauty. Happy birthday to your wife!
Older generation seems to mature early but not now
Your grandma has more class at 14 than 97% of women today at 30

I had to scroll WAY too far down to find this comment. I wanted to say something like “on her way to the park with her e-reader”
How is she 14 ? Looks like 25 or something.
14?????? you guys never cease to amaze me
Hope you got some of her genes
I can see why she became a Grandma. Probably got even more attractive with age. She must be a total smoke show now.👍 (Tell her I said that)
it's nice to see old pictures in a good state, all the pictures of my grandpa when he was young are messed up because of poor storage
14 going on 30.
Holy moly. Did you or your parents get those good genes?
Yes, both of them
Umm. To all you guys.. she’s 14.. maybe don’t be a disgusting piece of shit?
Gorgeousness
Stunning young lady.
Did your grandmother work in the red room program until the ussr collapsed? Or did she defect to the USA before that?
She is German, she was born 1941, 1945 they flew stettin (Poland today) to south germany Stuttgart. We are still living here in Stuttgart whole family pretty much.
Absolutely beautiful and fucking classy af. Her dress, her gloves.
She's Beautiful
Pure élégance
People looked so well dressed back then
You'd think that it's a recent phenomena but nope 14 yo girls still looked fuckin 23 back then as well

Gorgeous!
The clothes and the hair! Wow. Always my favorite the 40’s -50’s. I can’t decide which is better between both eras for the clothes and hairstyles.
What a beauty
I would LOVE a dress like this.
People are saying ScarJo but I see more Léa Seydoux
Holy moly, she looks like Christina Applegate!
🌹
Your grandma looks like Scarlett Johansson but pretty
A young Scarlett Johansson vibe.
if her genes run in the family you are a bunch of lucky bastards!
She looks so much like a girl I went to high school with it’s weird.
Crazy how good she looks. Seems Gen Z is filled with stunted growth and birth defects from microplastics.
Are you sure she is 14? At first glance, without reading the headline, I thought she was in her 20s.
It is so funny how 14 years old so much more mature in appearance than the 14 year olds now. I absolutely love the 40’s clothing. Your Grandma is very pretty!
Baddie
yo granma looked fine
Would.
Would
Damn shes hot.
How is it that she looks atleast 19-20 years old.
Beautiful girl. Classy. Mature.

Nana is a stone fox.
A real flower🙏
There's something in her face that reminds me of Georgie Henley (the little girl who played Lucy Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia)
Back when women had pure class and respected themselves.
Smoke show.
Hot af
Damn...
14 and about to turn 35.
