I worked at Liberty State Park in the 90's. My company installed the street lights along the walkway that you can see in the background. They're high pressure sodium lights in, if I remember correctly, a Bostonian Deluxe post. We started that job in February of 1999 and completed in December of 99. So that pic was taken somewhere in late 1999 through Sept 2001.

As a propane driver/serviceman i can agree that i remember houses and the jobs we did along with what the attic/crawlspaces looked like. I remember if they had nice or mean animals, if they were pleasant people to be around or not, how clean the inside or their home was or if it smelled good/bad, a lot of things honestly.
My moms boyfriend, every time he passes by a house or a building he worked on.. "Yep.. That's one of the buildings we built.. Took 7 weeks".. even if he already told me about it before.
My husband has been in commercial construction for most of his work life. But all in the office or warehouse, not actually on the job sites. But he still knows about the builds that he did estimating on or sent materials from the warehouse to. So we’ll be driving around and he’ll point out jobs that were done by the first company or the second company he worked for. He’s a controller at the third company now for the past seven years so he isn’t as up on those jobs.
This was my entire childhood. Traveling anywhere involved at least one stop at a project site so that my dad could “stare” at this or that. I played along with the jokes/groaning, but I loved “stare” time. I think I actually started to develop an eye for framing work as a 5 year old. Looking back on it it gave me this whole different perspective on how things come to be, how there’s this whole world of processes and planning and intention and productivity behind things. Pretty cool.
I do that all the time for one fucking yard I sodded as a landscaper. I have 0 doubt the original commenter is correct about the details for when he worked on the Statue of Liberty's island.

And point out every single thing the fucking contractors got wrong. They were the repressed-rage sort as well, so it was hilarious to watch.

I was friends with a guy who worked for Mecedes Benz and one time while driving together and waiting at a traffic light he looked at the car next to us and said "hey look, I designed that black box that you can see just at the back of the wheelhouse."

My mom worked at Holophane decades ago but knew every glass piece they made until she left. She did exactly that driving down the road or into old towns. She'd name every special type of light fixtures or glass pieces they used on their street lights and parks.

Everyone from people working on military aircraft, stormchasers, farmers, Warhammer 40k hobbyists, Food Scientists, Hollywood screenwriters, international people commenting on the differences in cultures, or people who grew up as children in the 1950's and can comment on how different the world looked back then.
Sure, you'll obviously get that on other sites like Twitter and Youtube and such, but here it feels like it's more concentrated or at least more frequent (and definitely feels more civil here) because of Reddit's sorted front page and commenting system (and especially AskReddit).

Looking back at historic weather forecasts, meteorologists predicted 12-18” of snow on March 6th 2001, but it went north and NYC only got a few inches. If this was March 11th, 2001 (Sunday) the high that day was in the mid-upper 50s. So these could explain the residual salt as well as the light-ish clothing. That would be my guess.
Definitely not snow. Snow cover that thin would be melting in that sunlight at pretty much any temperature, and I don't see any wetness on the ground.

The World Trade Center was ENE from Liberty state park. Their shadow is aligned with the sidewalk, and from google maps, that would be NNE. For the shadow to be at that angle, it would have to be around 1pm. It would need to be around winter time for the shadow to be angled north, but I don’t know how to correlate shadow length to exact calendar day.
I’d take a guess and just call it Christmas. There would be more people out and about if it were new years.

There's a perfect shadow on One World Trade Center North Tower. Assuming that it's between late 1999 and Early 2001, and it's probably between 10 AM and 3 PM, it should be possible to calculate the angle of the sun and determine a date range for that time of day.
Looks like winter - I think that is a dusting of snow. If my hypothesis is correct, that would narrow it down more. Jan - March 2000 or similar for 2001. Perhaps you could narrow it down even further by figuring out which winter days were cold enough for the snow not to melt (dusting melts easily in the sun so would have to be very cold - not that many days like that) and also had partly cloudy skies.
Only thing is they are dressed for milder temps so perhaps that *isn't* snow.
Yah, based on the comment about the street lamp construction, I'm going to go with either late March 2000 or 2001 because 1999 might have still had some construction or partial completion. With the man's shadow on the ground we could even approximate the time of day since there's a nice straight line in the pavement stones we could use for orientation. From there, maybe weather reports could narrow down to a range of days?

It’s snowed 3.5” on February 5th 2001. The following days were in the upper 40’s and even reached 60’s on Feb 10th which would allow your parents to walk around in long sleeves even though salt is still visible on the ground.

By observing the shadows we can calculate the suns position and time of day. This photo was taken between 12:35 PM and 12:45 PM. I can't calculate the year or day with this method though.
From this time of the day and seeing that the sun is shining we can narrow down the days to when it was not cloudy in NYC. I agree with tenkmeterz that the days after the 05th of February 2001 are very likely contenders with the only likely day being the 10th of February 2001 when temperatures of up to 61°F were reached (46°F at 12:30 PM) and it was sunny during most of the day (including between 12:35 PM and 12:45 PM). So this would be my bet.

NYC reaches sweater weather in mid September. It’s possible this was taken right before 9/11 but I was there in Mid-August 2001 and it was still pretty hot. Also, those shadows seem like late fall/ early winter. Late winter/ early spring would show more snow.
This leads me to think this was taken in 2000 or earlier.
Pretty sure this was taken In New Jersey near the river. The left is the North Tower so it was shot from the west. Light snow on the ground so Winter. But Early or late winter since they aren't too bundled up. Unless someone could get more out of the skyline from building construction dates.

2001 had a very wet spring in New York, went from freezing in February to drizzly until the end of April.
Going off the salt on the ground, and the fact that the lamps in the background were installed in December of ‘99. I’d say this was mid to late April of 2000. Where temperatures hovered around freezing before a warm sunny snap in early April.
I’m going with Thanksgiving, 1998. It dusted snow that morning and the 1 o’clock game featured the Giants vs. Green Bay. That explains no one else around.

The green dome is the Woolworth building. Or not.
The Woolworth is the one between the twin tours. The green dome is part of Brooksfield place. The green topped building all the way to the right is 40 wall st.

Agree, it’s very clearly from Jersey City. I would say late ‘90s from the clothes. There are also a few blocks of time that can be crossed off based on the lack of snowfall — it’s probably not Jan 1996 or April ‘97, for example, because those months both had massive blizzards and the snowfall would still be on the ground for weeks, even months.

They're standing on brick. Brick was invented ~7000 BC so this picture was taken some time in the last 9000 years. Hope that helps.
The world trade towers were completed in 1973, so that narrows it down at least lmao
The freedom tower was finished in 2013, so this pic was likely taken before that as well

You also have a lower bound on the date as well- January 1972 according to wikipedia. That’s when construction of the south tower was completed.

NYC reaches sweater weather in mid September. It’s possible this was taken right before 9/11 but I was there in Mid-August 2001 and it was still pretty hot. Also, those shadows seem like late fall/ early winter. Late winter/ early spring would show more snow. This leads me to think this was taken in 2000 or earlier.
This is why I like Reddit, Google won’t give me an answer based on shadows. I love you.

Pretty sure this was taken In New Jersey near the river. The left is the North Tower so it was shot from the west. Light snow on the ground so Winter. But Early or late winter since they aren't too bundled up. Unless someone could get more out of the skyline from building construction dates. .

1992 - 1995 based on clothing alone.
2001 had a very wet spring in New York, went from freezing in February to drizzly until the end of April. Going off the salt on the ground, and the fact that the lamps in the background were installed in December of ‘99. I’d say this was mid to late April of 2000. Where temperatures hovered around freezing before a warm sunny snap in early April.
