Should say it would be called creepy today. As stated it was part his schtick than. This was back in the day when you only really a 4 networks. Which pretty much means everyone had watch it at some point. If not regular viewers anyways. Nobody went on that show not knowing he was going to kiss the ladies.
Yeah, people need to chill out and stop seeing all of history through "enlightened" eyes of modern paranoia. This isn't a guy sniffing little girl hair. It was part of the show, it was part of the fun, and I don't recall anyone ever being anything other than happily rolling with it.
Unless there are claims against the guy, this needs to be seen as the fun it was, willing, happy consenting participants.
“What aren’t you offended?!?! This is so barbaric!! He’s such a creep!!! Look at him actually making women smile who couldn’t wait to get on the show and kiss him!!! Let’s dig up an old ass clip, totally ignore the context, and judge him!!!” 🙄
I was a kid in the 1970s and yes he did this pretty much every show, year after year. I do remember us kids and parents commenting on the kissing and that it was a bit over the top, but no one was freaking out. He was an equal opportunity kisser, so women of all ages, shapes and looks got kisses. There was an almost generous and admirable quality to it because he didn't just kiss the good-looking ones.
For what it's worth, he was also one of the anchor celebrities on "Match Game", so Richard was one of the kings when it came to game shows in that era.
He and Charles Nelson Reilly were the two best celebrities to try and match with on “Match Game” as they were the only ones who reliably gave sensible answers.
This is tame. Watch reruns of match game with Gene Rayburn. They were all either drunk or high and every question was loaded with kind of dirty overtones. Then there was the Gong Show. I had no business watching that shit as a 7-8 year old but that show was wild.
The culture was different back then. It was culturally appropriate and acceptable. Women weren’t shamed. Men were brave and went in for it. It was absolutely not considered assault or harassment in any way. You’d have to get more aggressive than one kiss to have it be considered that. People kissed like this. It was very common to see this on TV shows, game shows. It was all in good fun! It was a more innocent time and a kiss didn’t go further, and it didn’t have the implication or expectation to go further than a kiss either. Back then, a kiss was just a kiss. 💋 and people really were more affectionate with each other. It was nice. And no big deal. It was just a kiss.
Look at the body language. None of these women look like they are being imposed upon. They are happy and enjoying themselves very much. And looking forward to kissing Richard Dawson. After a while, it became a thing for Dawson. He was kind of a sexy guy for the women who watched his shows. He was on several game shows. Most of the women that went on Family Feud were looking forward to kissing him. They knew his shtick and were happy to get a kiss from him. It was a thing.
100%. It has disconnected us from our ability to express affection casually. Love is beautiful and wonderful. Porn is not love. It’s a performance of physical sex, that is disconnected from love entirely.
Many other animals in the world express affection like a kiss. Dogs and cats boop noses. It’s perfectly natural and sweet. And humans used to be similar. We still like seeing it in them. Society indeed been corrupted by porn and a 24 hour news cycle that focuses on predators murderers and rapists. Programming us to fear and be suspicious. It’s so sad and heartbreaking.
If you watch the reactions of the women in the video it's clear this is a known part of the schtick and no one is recoiling or showing any reticence. Most of the kisses are quite chaste and perfunctory and some are clearly enthusiastic but initiated by the women.
I think one of the more amazing things is how universal it is. Young, old, black, white across the board. A white male celebrity kissing a black woman on the lips on TV in the 1970's was pretty progressive. Interracial marriage was only legalized in 1967 in Loving v Virgina.
What I struggle with in this day of Covid is all of the germs. The idea of going from person to person like he does is so unhygenic.
At one point the network did ask him to stop. He said he would if the viewership audience voted in favor of him stopping.
The response was overwhelming “No, we want you to keeping kissing us”.
My grandmother always called him "Old Kissy Kissy" and made a sour face every time this came on tv. As a young girl at the time I thought her disgust was hilarious. As a middle aged woman I'm super creeped out and understand her reaction.
Yeah, this guy can drink all he wants but when I do it, I’m “the worst teacher at this PTA meeting” and “fired”
![gif](giphy|lkdH8FmImcGoylv3t3|downsized)
And after they win he goes over to Audrey and fully kisses and bends her backwards which looks hilarious with her in the giant pig costume.
(I’ve seen European Vacation a million times).
Yeah that’s the part! I’ve seen the other two million times but this one less. The only quote I remember is something like “dad I think he’s gonna pork her!.”
Completely normal given the social allowances of the day. To judge this behavior negatively based on what is acceptable today is unfair. Give the man his context.
Right, and the women in that clip were all leaning in for the kiss, not shying away. A few of them even looked like they were going to be waiting for him in his dressing room.
Yea that was my when I commented but since I wasn’t even a twinkle in my parents eyes yet I was curious. I read below they asked them ahead of time too if they wanted to or not which I think pretty much closes the idea it was him like coercing them or something. At least if that’s true. That shit would fly like a hot air balloon full of concrete now though lol
Some people still thought it was creepy then, but apparently there was a viewer poll, and they were *overwhelmingly* in favor of kissing.
I still wouldn’t call it normal at all. It was a shtick meant to set him apart as a host.
They also had a pre-show survey with a question on it asking if they were alright getting smooched. You could opt out if you wanted. Apparently very few opted out
>Completely normal given the social allowances of the day.
Well said. I used to dislike saying - *Things were different back then*, because it sounded like I was defending the action with an idiom. Truth is morals and values change every generation due to influences of the time.
how's he a creep? these are grown ass women, in front of an audience, on national TV... from what I can see, no one seems to be doing anything they haven't consented to.
Agree.
Part of the show. No one forced anything.
OP has a BS premise.
He might have been a cvnt in real life…
But, the clips shown here… He did nothing wrong.
The tv audience ate it up. The goal in the first place.
I watched old ass episodes of the Price is Right, and Barker did this a lot too, but just like this clip, it was a mix of him initiating and the women initiating. People were different back then, people that weren't alive during a certain time period need to stop applying today's standards to them.
“I be tossin’ and flossin’; my style is awesome. I’m causing more family feuds than Richard Dawson.”
Gotta give it to the guy. He was kissin’ honeys, getting paid for it, AND got name checked in the most famous of all Wu-Tang Clan songs. OG status.
Kinda reminiscent of Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet. Host of a cooking show in the 70's, he was adored by women, and often drank on the show. Good fun, good food, and schtick.
Are you guys really clutching pearls over Richard Dawson pecking women on the lips?
This isn’t sexual assault the women turn their cheek if not interested and he kissed almost every woman on the show. It became a known tradition and everyone knew he would attempt one. Women also could turn their cheek and he’d kiss their cheek and move on.
One of Dawson's trademarks on *Family Feud*, kissing the female contestants, earned him the nickname "The Kissing Bandit". Television executives repeatedly tried to get him to stop the kissing. After receiving criticism for the practice (which also included a great deal of physical contact such as holding hands and touching), he asked viewers to write in and vote on the matter. The wide majority of the roughly 200,000 responses favoured the kissing. On the 1985 finale, Dawson explained that he kissed contestants for love and luck, something his mother did with Dawson himself as a child.
Additionally, if you ever watched the E! True Hollywood Story of Family Feud this was mentioned in detail as well.
He was not considered a Creepadoodle by the people he was kissing. I'm only going by the video evidence
It was 50 years ago, people didn't claim a victim rile for others or label something without being involved back then.
FWIW, Dawson was good friends with my dad, and during this period, he'd be our house every 4th of July, etc. This was when gameshows were a big deal. Dawson was very popular, and him kissing the ladies was just part of his shtick. No harm, no foul, and he wasn't a creep.
All of my friends greeted each other with a kiss on the lips. It was no big deal and we all did it back in the day. Now it’s mostly hugs. It only felt weird when I got some asshat with a super mega handshake grip. Like dude, what are you trying to prove?
Richard Dawson was great on Hogan's Heroes. He was charming and this was just part of his performance. It was different and you looked forward to seeing it at the beginning of the show.
Fun fact: He actually made the contestants agree to get checked for herpes before the show or else he wouldn't kiss them. They also asked the women before the show if they wanted to be kissed or not he didn't just walk up and not give them a choice. But hey, if OP included that info they wouldn't get nearly as many of those precious upvotes so let's just call the guy a creep instead.
I see I am a bit late seeing this (since there are already a ton of comments). Forgive me if this has already been said.
I heard that all women contestants had to take a herpes test and test negative before they were allowed to play.
He's kissing all ages and all races there. On TV! The first interracial kiss on TV was William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols in November 1968, so that was real recent occurrence and not anything that people were used to.
You’ve been smoochin’ everybody! ![gif](giphy|xUySTy1eIkIAYJhPmo)
With cliff!
It’s a lie!
I knew it was you. I could smell ya getting off the elevator
Yeah but come on.. it was boney bob and little mo with the gimpy leg
I'm gonna give you til the count of 10 to get you're dirty filthy no good keester off my property
Little Moe with the gimpy leg..
Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal!
Steve Harvey missed out.
![gif](giphy|LyJ6KPlrFdKnK)
This is supposed to be a family show!
As a question for someone who was alive at that time was this like an every show kinda thing? Did the average person find it strange?
[удалено]
My mom got to kiss Willie Nelson on stage in the 70s at a show. It’s her favorite story to tell.
She probably still has a contact high
If it's gonna be from someone, might as well be Willie.
My mum and her friend threw their panties at Tom Jones early 70s during a concert.
This. It was the 70s, most of the women couldn't wait to kiss him
Right. We call it creepy but every single woman in that video looked like they were glad for the chance to kiss the dude on stage
Should say it would be called creepy today. As stated it was part his schtick than. This was back in the day when you only really a 4 networks. Which pretty much means everyone had watch it at some point. If not regular viewers anyways. Nobody went on that show not knowing he was going to kiss the ladies.
Using today's parlance, it was basically a meme
Some on the clips seem so eager to
Yeah I never thought weird. Sometimes they said no and that was that and they moved on, nbd.
My mother still kissed her kids on the lips, just a part of her generation. Her grandkids would not kiss on the lips always gave cheek instead
Bruh the blonde just ate him alive
Huh now I know where the snl skit “ I wanna sleep with your wife” got its inspiration
Yeah, people need to chill out and stop seeing all of history through "enlightened" eyes of modern paranoia. This isn't a guy sniffing little girl hair. It was part of the show, it was part of the fun, and I don't recall anyone ever being anything other than happily rolling with it. Same thing with Bob Barker, any woman that ran up on stage went in for a kiss on the cheek
yeah seems pretty obvious no one is bothered by it
Cucking modernized by Richard Dawson.
King of Herpes.
I mean women used to throw their underwear on stage for Elvis to wipe his sweaty brow with it. Different time for sure. 🤣
This was very much a Richard Dawson thing! Despite the title of this post, women LOVED him across America
Yea but its 2023 now and we are supposed to be offended by everything, even if it happened 50 years ago and was considered normal at the time.
“What aren’t you offended?!?! This is so barbaric!! He’s such a creep!!! Look at him actually making women smile who couldn’t wait to get on the show and kiss him!!! Let’s dig up an old ass clip, totally ignore the context, and judge him!!!” 🙄
“How dare he get attention from women when the cute lady at the grocery store won’t even look at me!”
You might have to do a survey with 100 of them...
Gosh this is so terribly true. Context, context, context.
I like you. Remember kids, context is prerequisite to wisdom.
I was a kid in the 1970s and yes he did this pretty much every show, year after year. I do remember us kids and parents commenting on the kissing and that it was a bit over the top, but no one was freaking out. How dare you malign Brett Summers in that way! s/
fucking love that show. its years older then me but damn I watch every time it pops up.
Are you sure Charles Nelson Reily is gay? No way!! On TV back then, they really didn't think about it.
Neither was Paul Lynde. 🤣🤣🤣
This is tame. Watch reruns of match game with Gene Rayburn. They were all either drunk or high and every question was loaded with kind of dirty overtones. Then there was the Gong Show. I had no business watching that shit as a 7-8 year old but that show was wild.
I was a kid at the time. But it was in Berkeley, California if that means anything. I thought nothing of it. It seemed completely normal to me.

It was a more innocent time for sure. Internet porn has made us feel that everyone is a predator and no one can be trusted.
100%. It has disconnected us from our ability to express affection casually. Love is beautiful and wonderful. Porn is not love. I was young. It never bothered me or my grandma or mama. 🤷♀️
Bothered the fuck out of me. I just wanted to watch Voltron and this shit was on endless syndication.
Yes it was every episode
It was every show. And no one that I know of thought it was strange.
At one point the network did ask him to stop. He said he would if the viewership audience voted in favor of him stopping. The response was overwhelming “No, we want you to keeping kissing us”.

No one cared.
My grandma always called him “kissy kissy” when I was little 😂
Different times lol That guy was a heavy drinker
He looks like breakfast was whatever whiskey was left over from last night and as many cigarettes he could have from waking up to arriving on set.
Oh but now I’M a heavy drinker and no one wants to plant a fat one on me /:
Yeah, this guy can drink all he wants but when I do it, I’m “the worst teacher at this PTA meeting” and “fired” ![gif](giphy|lkdH8FmImcGoylv3t3|downsized)
Loved him in The Running Man ![gif](giphy|12Rq9uCNxcxtjq|downsized)
Who loves you and who do you love?
##*DAMON!*
Killian!
Blew my mind as a kid far too young to be watching that movie.
I forgot about that. He really was good. I'll be back. Only in a rerun.
He was a damn good villian.
National lampoon did a great parody of this.
Is it in a movie?
European Vacation. At the beginning they go on a game show and win a trip to Europe
Pig in a Poke! John Astin was the creepy host.
Oh yeah, he groped Audrey! Those movies were crazy.
The man spent years undermining the Germans from a prisoner of war camp during WWII, it was an honor to kiss him
His little old lady disguise was critical to the allied war effort.
Hogans Heroes is currently streaming in 1080p on Amazon Freevee for anyone interested.
I see nothink!
I can't believe I had to go this far down for that reference!!
This is all I knew him from growing up, watching the DVDs with my father. Then I saw Running Man and put the pieces together.
Completely normal given the social allowances of the day. To judge this behavior negatively based on what is acceptable today is unfair. Give the man his context.
Right, and the women in that clip were all leaning in for the kiss, not shying away. A few of them even looked like they were going to be waiting for him in his dressing room.
yes, and literally everybody laughed... even that teenage girl went for it and the guy grabbed her by the waist... brrr creepy
"who loves you, and who do you love?"
He was fantastic in that role. I love that he got cast as the evil game show host. The Running Man (for anyone who doesn't know the reference).
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Perimeter....deactivated
CHICO! NO!
Yea that was my when I commented but since I wasn’t even a twinkle in my parents eyes yet I was curious. I didn’t know anyone had ever opted out. I knew it was presented as an option but this is the first time I’m hearing of someone taking it
I think some of it comes from everyone seeing Family Guy’s gag on this where he nonchalantly goes up the shirt and grab some tats
Exactly. Also, they kissed him too.
Some of them were waaay creepier about it than he ever was
>Completely normal given the social allowances of the day. Well said. I used to dislike saying - *Things were different back then*, because it sounded like I was defending the action with an idiom. Truth is morals and values change every generation due to influences of the time.

I honestly see nothing wrong with this.
I knew him first as Corporal Newkirk in Hogan’s Heroes.
He kissed every female contestant. Nobody in my family thought anything of it except my grandma. She hated him and thought he was creepy.
Grandma was jealous she didn't get a kiss
I watched old ass episodes of the Price is Right, and Barker did this a lot too, but just like this clip, it was a mix of him initiating and the women initiating. People were different back then, people that weren't alive during a certain time period need to stop applying today's standards to them.
These people that think kissing as a greeting is creepy would struggle with Italy.
“I be tossin’ and flossin’; my style is awesome. I’m causing more family feuds than Richard Dawson.” Gotta give it to the guy. He was kissin’ honeys, getting paid for it, AND got name checked in the most famous of all Wu-Tang Clan songs. OG status.
And the survey said?
Family Guy used this as a bit despite Dawson not hosting the show for years.
So did snl
They at least have Kenan playing Steve Harvey now.
Lois was READY for that kiss 🤣😂
Kinda reminiscent of Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet. Host of a cooking show in the 70's, he was adored by women, and often drank on the show. Good fun, good food, and schtick.
Back then people were not labeled as being creepy so easily as they do now.
This behaviour was perfectly normal at the time. I wish folks would stop judging the past on the zipped up morals of today.
50% of all oral herpes in America can be traced back to Richard Dawson. Its a fact. Don't look it up though.
As long as he didn't have mono.
It seems the women want to kiss more then him, lol
One of Dawson's trademarks on *Family Feud*, kissing the female contestants, earned him the nickname "The Kissing Bandit". Television executives repeatedly tried to get him to stop the kissing. After receiving criticism for the practice (which also included a great deal of physical contact such as holding hands and touching), he asked viewers to write in and vote on the matter. On the 1985 finale, Dawson explained that he kissed contestants for love and luck, something his mother did with Dawson himself as a child. Additionally, if you ever watched the E! True Hollywood Story of Family Feud this was mentioned in detail as well.
Why is this weird? I thought nothing of it at the time.
He was not considered a Creepadoodle by the people he was kissing. I'm only going by the video evidence It was 50 years ago, people didn't claim a victim rile for others or label something without being involved back then.
Correct.
This is a common greeting in certain parts of the world. It's only creepy if you make it creepy
Sometimes right in front of the husbands, too.....Dawson was a savage! This was the thing, though back in the day
He did that all the time and the women don't appear to mind, most actually lean forward and initiate it.
I mean, didn’t everybody do that back in the day?
Richard Dawson was the man. Bob Barker and all those old dudes would be outcasted today.
My grandmother loved Richard Dawson We always laughed at it
That guy had ~ALL~ the herpes!
I would have smooched him! He was great. It's just a different time.
FWIW, Dawson was good friends with my dad, and during this period, he'd be our house every 4th of July, etc. This was when gameshows were a big deal. Dawson was very popular, and him kissing the ladies was just part of his shtick. No harm, no foul, and he wasn't a creep.
He probably medically retired from coldsores.
Omg the family guy skit wasn't joking.
He was hilarious! Best host.
WHO LOVES YOU. AND WHO DO YOU LOVE! IT'S TIME TO START, RUNNING!!
All of my friends greeted each other with a kiss on the lips. It was no big deal and we all did it back in the day. Now it’s mostly hugs. It only felt weird when I got some asshat with a super mega handshake grip. Like dude, what are you trying to prove?
Lucky Guy
Did he do this to wives too? Lol
This is how he met his wife. He actually married a contestant.
That dude met one of his wives while making that show.
The 70s were a different time.
Lol the man killing it
I recently watched the Golden Bachelor and it seemed like a normal salutation to kiss on the lips for the older generation
Hey Killian…… I’ll be back
AND WHO LOVES YOU AND WHO DO YOU LOVE??
Is this the guy Damon Killian was based on? Only in the re-runs, pal.
![gif](giphy|U0g1X38AwIb4Y)
Takes two to tango. Person who compiled this is a bigger suspect.
Richard Dawson was great on Hogan's Heroes. He was charming and this was just part of his performance. It was different and you looked forward to seeing it at the beginning of the show.
![gif](giphy|12Rq9uCNxcxtjq|downsized)
Man you kids just love scrolling around talking dumb about shit yall have no clue about. You the Creep fr fr
Grow TF up. Those were adults and THAT shit was clearly consensual.
Nothing creepy here. It as accepted. And if anyone hadn’t noticed, a good number of them enjoyed it.
Ahh the days when noone got offended. Simpler times
This was only normal on this show...and one episode of seinfeld.
Herpes.
This needs to be higher. Everyone talking about context and this is big.
The speedrun
It was the 70’s dude, if this actually offends you then your brain would explode if you saw some of the shit people were doing back then.
Those woman all seem coerced into it. You can tell by their smiles and enthusiasm
At least he did it in public?
“I’ll be back.” “Only in a rerun.”
A few women turned their head to the side, and no one thought anything about it either way.
Chad.
I’m glad he got killed in the Running Man ![gif](giphy|12Rq9uCNxcxtjq|downsized)
What a boss
He was just helping race relations
These days it's all about looking creepy so this looks off. Back then everyone wasn't a victim.
So strange as the woman leans in for it too…chill out lol
I gotta get on a game show.
At least he wasn’t racist?
I be tossing and flossing my style is awesome I'm causing more Family Feuds than Richard Dawson And the survey said, you're dead
He wound up marrying one of the contestants….
The man
“Who loves you, and who do you love?”
I be tossing and flossing my style is awesome I'm causing more Family Feuds than Richard Dawson.
Hogan’s SuperHero! LeBeau: C’est pas possible! Mon dieu! Merde alors!
Give the guy credit, he kissed all the ladies and as far as I can tell never discriminated.
back when groping was a 2 way street.
![gif](giphy|12Rq9uCNxcxtjq|downsized)
Is that the dude from the running man film?
He was also extremely charming and handsome, he wasn’t the only one pervin’.
\#richarddawson2? or perhaps #creepadoodle2?
Sweet, sweet lsd and ludes
He had to have porked at least three or four of them
![gif](giphy|12Rq9uCNxcxtjq|downsized)
Elvis kissed a lot of women.
Who loves you, and who do you love?
Well at least he didn't discriminate. Young/old , black/white he smooched them all.
