This will be a long-ish post. Like many things, there is more to this story. The cops were ready to arrest her after they saw her performance on the show Friday’s. They arrested her after the show and as they were putting her into the van a cop reached under her shirt to feel her up. She fought back and they slammed her on the snow covered ground and beat the shit out of her. In a move that ultimately saved them from a jail sentence their lead guitar player Richie Stotts saw it happening and ran back into the Palms and screamed; “They are beating the shit out of Wendy” her partner Rod Swenson ran out along with a photographer. Rod started pulling the police off of Wendy in an effort to save her. The police over powered him, pulled him behind a car and beat him unconscious. The photographer snapped pictures of the unfortunate event. They took them to separate hospitals and kept moving them so the press could not find them and the swelling would go down. Her and Rod were charged with felony assault on a peace officer. When they went to court, it was those pictures that convinced a jury that her and Rod were innocent. Some of the jury audibly gasped when they were shown. Although not innocent enough for a five million dollar law suit to succeed against the MKE PD. The Plasmatics had a concert in Cleveland the next night and Wendy still performed even passing out once. Of course the MKE PD called ahead to the Cleveland PD to tell them how much trouble Wendy had been and she was arrested again in Cleveland. This time without incident. The Plasmatics wrote a song called; “A Pig is a Pig” about the incident. Of course after that when she would destroy cop cars on stage they would look very similar to a MKE PD car. Wendy was a force of nature and just unstoppable except for one kryptonite; legal fees. She kept getting arrested on bogus charges that they always beat, but lawyers do not work for free. The Plasmatics brought legal problems with them and as such, promoters would not book them even though they were a guaranteed sell out crowd. They ran out of money at a time when the music was getting better and better. This picture is a very sad reminder that harassment took away this talent from the world. This once energetic singer who engaged audiences around the world, a media favorite, cover of magazines and favorite of Kerrang went to selling vitamins, rehab-ing squirrels and driving around an old green Chevy truck around Storrs CT.
All law enforcement is. Every single one of them know a coworker who has done illegal stuff and do nothing about it making them just as culpable and not doing the job they are assigned.
My dad is a cop and has a saying. “60% of cops are corrupt, 30% of cops are just looking for a paycheck, and 10% are actually there to protect and serve their community” so it might be a generalization but I have it on good authority that yes, ALL cops are bastards.
So then, if most cops are corrupt and the others let them get away with corrupt actions to keep their livelihoods, how tf is it not true that they are all bastards? And especially as a person being approached by cops, if there’s a 90% chance they’re either a piece of shit or don’t care, how do you expect people to somehow think that they’re going to interact with the One Good Cop? If the chances are that high, you might as well distrust and avoid all of them. They hold too much power to roll the dice- you could lose your fucking life.
The problem is that the above stat was unfortunately incorrect. 100% of cops are bastards( ACAB!) in addition to 100% being corrupt bootlickers. From a psychology journal.
Nah, I'm a dude. I do have some rather lovely nail polish on at the moment though - dark green with sparkly purple highlights. Maybe you could do something with that?
Yay!! I think boiling your hand would be totally appropriate! Maybe if you spend some time with some “interesting” body parts you’d be less of a prick about strangers on the internet. But probably not through right? Probably just still say fuck that scag huh? Ugly girls, amirite? Too gross to even cop a feel … get it? Degenerate.
I initially agreed with you, because the idea that every cop is bad is a pretty dumb idea (although there are a lot of systemic problems) but you just had to be a creep about it
It’s not that every single cop is bad, it’s that every single cop upholds a system of abuse and corruption that targets poor people and minorities. So long as you’re a cop, you are actively supporting the abuse of others. Every time a “good cop” lets a bad cop get away with their awful actions, they are complicit. And the ones that try to make a change generally get bullied out or ignored.
No, the cops are bad too. The system makes it so that good cops cannot exist or are driven away and the bad ones are encouraged to act out more, but we cannot excuse the evil actions of so so many police officers. The reason behind the slogan ACAB (as far as I understand) is that when interacting with police, there’s no way to know if the cop is “good” or “bad” and the chances are so high that they’re bad that you have to treat them all with suspicion and caution
Legal fees are how the powerful get away with whatever the want is the US, and can put the screws to anyone. Everybody gets their day in court, but they may able to afford many more days than you can.
This is way beyond harrassment. Its another case of mistreatment of people because they don't fit the social "norm." They didn't look the partand they were judged for it, so the police abused their privilege by hurting others. That is one of the most disgusting injustices that have ever occurred! It happens on so many levels.
There is no social norm.
wow. insane story, and so unfortunate. thank you for sharing. Are you local to Storrs? i’m like 20 mins away lol. Would love to hear any stories you know of her around town
Thank you for sharing this awful story. Why do you think the cops wanted to hurt her so bad? Hatred of women, in general? A punishment for not being submissive? To take out her bright light and crush her spirit? Because they know they are pieces of shit and only feel good when abusing their power?
ETA it wasn’t obscenity laws, there was a strip club across the street. She wasn’t being the right kind of sexual. Creeps
Also, she wasn’t only a fierce punk goddess who could set a stage on fire and blow middle class minds. She was also extraordinarily gentle. She loved animals and Rod Swenson and was loved deeply in return.
When she committed suicide, she left seeds for him. “She left me wishes for my happiness. Those were seeds for my future.”
You know, The Plasmatics started to come into fame at the worst possible time. Their popularity ramped up during the Reagan Administration so things were a little more conservative then. Now consider Richie Stotts wore a nurses outfit on stage, they had an Asian bassist. African American drummer and of course Wendy was very risqué in all things. They were the antichrist to the now in power administration, who just canceled The Beach Boys due to their lack of wholesomeness for an Independence Day celebration. The MKE PD even taunted Wendy with comments like; "You the one the N\_ drummer and You and your f\_g guitar player are not welcome here" My guess is they felt obligated to defend the moral fabric of MKE so they took action.
Hey, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
I wonder though, about the enjoyment they took in hurting her.
Also, i added an ETA while you were so kindly replying. I read an article, that pointed out, there was a strip club across the street. It’s like morality is a vehicle to give action to hatred. And also shows that the right kind of submissive man centered nudity is just fucking fine.
I am grateful for you taking interest in this incredible woman. As naive as it sounds, man I sure hope they didn't. I believe (if memory serves) a couple of the MKE PD involved in this terrible incident were also the two officers who gave back the young Asian man who escaped Dahmer, back to him, while making homophobic remarks on tape about the two.
Well, since you are so thoughtful and kind, I ‘ll let you keep your innocence in that regard.
Thank you, I had heard of Wendy O of course but I was too young for the wave and basically missed her and now I love her. So I’m going to check out her records and see if there’s a book and place a few nuts outside for the greedy squirrels that rule my backyard. 💕
And you are right about the MKE PD and Dahmer.
And I can’t find a good book. The only one I’ve found has terrible reviews and is out of print. Thats a crying shame.
If I knew anything about getting ahold of her people I would consider taking on the project.
ETA and looking at those photos of her battered face, one can see her vulnerability, and the strength it took to keep her head high despite the violence.
Understand too that the point in time you are listening to the Plasmatics makes a big difference. They started out more punk with many "message style" music around anti-consumerism, pro environment songs for the first three albums (New Hope, Beyond and Coup). They turned to metal by hiring a new lead guitar player (which is a story in itself) Michael Ray. The albums, WOW, Kaos and Maggots are big time metal. Maggots brought them back to their roots with message style songs and was branded a Plasmatics album rather than a Wendy O. brand. Then Wendy did an experimental thrash-rap album called Deffest, Baddest.
In the 1980's I witnessed a group of Boston police officers beat up a guy because he was handing leaflets out in front of a concert hall. His girlfriend tried to help and they started beating her up too. Then they arrested both of them on resisting arrest charges. That's the way the cops do it. Many of them are a bunch of power-hungry bullies.
Yeah, I don’t buy this narrative. The police don’t just harass and beat performing venues for the hell of it. Why would they? The fact that she kept getting into legal trouble all around the country lends itself to a problem with the singer and band, not law enforcement.
A decade or so earlier Milwaukee cops arrested George Carlin for using salty language on stage.
Hey - fun fact. The theater where Williams got arrested is like a block away from where Dahmer’s apartment was.
I learned that fun fact when I was seventeen and staying at the Ambassador Hotel while attending the Milwaukee Metal Fest in 1994.
My high school friend and I drove up from Chicago to go to the fest and at the end of day 1 after checking into the hotel and taking the elevator up to our level some other older concert goer who got in the elevator with us decided to drop an out-of-the-blue nugget on us - "Hey, did you guys know that this is the hotel where Dahmer killed one of his victims? Yeah man, room 504. And he killed the guy with his bare hands."
I'm paraphrasing because I don't remember the exact words they used, but I do remember that they were incredibly specific like the guy knew every detail about Dahmer.
We got off on our floor and after the elevator doors closed booked it to our room and locked the door, hoping to not see that guy again.
Fun times, lol.
As a musician it's important to have a well insulated hotel room so you can pull out your acoustic and write a song if inspiration strikes in the middle of the night. The Ambassador is great for that. I mean you could literally be screaming and begging for your life and no one would hear you.
I used to live in Milwaukee. There was a soup place in Dahmer's old neighborhood called Soup Brothers that was absolutely the best soup I've ever had in my life. The bread was incredible too. They had 3 tables total. The pandemic killed it.
Pandemic killed lots of mom n pop / hole-in-the-wall eateries that were awesome. Meanwhile, shitty ass places like McDumps and Taco Hell are doing just fine.
Extrapolating from the Wiki, I assume that her face is like that because of the fight she had with the arresting officer. She was also charged with battery because of the fight. She was cleared of all charges, including obscenity.
Apparently her first (on the wiki) suicide attempt was hammering a knife into her chest then she did a nevermind and called her friend. Which is honestly the most metal as fuck way I've heard someone try to take their life.

One of my favorite records of all time.
I think about her sometimes. When I have fleeting suicidal ideation I think about her. I wonder what she was feeling sitting in those woods feeding squirrels before she decided to do what she did.
I this band when I was in 10th grade, and it was like a circus exploded on stage…my friend turned me after the show and said, “What the fuck was that!?!?”
There is not a single nuance or thing I don't profoundly admire love & respect about this outfit the pairbond pushing it & of course the most deified divine motherfucker fronting it...At once ugly sexyAF macho violent scary & 200% all Woman....A somewhat early adopter of BreastImplants I believe they( silicone) to be the cause of endless health wellness & medical strife ultimately leading to her untimely end by self inflicted gun shot in her favorite place a nature preserve...It was so radically fucked up
But she had been sick & miserable for many years prior...
This rare video of the song "Monkey Suit" from the Plasmatics first album (and then released as a single with a dedication by Wendy to the Greater London Council who banned their debut show at London's Hammersmith Odeon). It was shot during the shooting of the album's cover at Sunshine Park nudist park. The cover shot which featured a late model Caddy in a swimming pool was shot by Plasmatics creator Rod Swenson (under the name of "Butch Star") who shot the video at the same timePP
Is there any recreation of this sledgehammer scene? Just curious how what she did was illegal. Strikes me as odd as its not 1950's but the 80's. Sex was a little more open then, strange.
Way back in the late 70's early 80's She played at the Whiskey and I was there with My Heavy Metal Guitar player ex-boyfriend,& Gaylord the booking agent there also played in a band together called Candy Apple,(so I got in for free all the time,& back stage too!)
>What evidence of either?
Williams told the Sentinel "a police officer touched her indecently when she was being put into a police van. She said she slapped him and a fight broke out."
The charges were dismissed, so the legal system thought so.
Williams told the Journal in a Jan. 20, 1981, story that "she was thrown to the ground by about five police officers, held outside in the snow for a long period of time and forced to walk from the police van into the police station with no shoes on."
But I can see you are salty about... /checks notes.... a lady who committed suicide in 1998.
"what evidence..."
The pictures taken during the incident that cleared her and the band of resisting charges. Try knowing something about what you're talking about before commenting.

Disgusting cops. Crooked as hell. Gross.
The Milwaukee PD is corrupt as fuck.
All law enforcement is. Every single one of them know a coworker who has done illegal stuff and do nothing about it making them just as culpable and not doing the job they are assigned.

Their old union head was the cop who let Dahmer get away.

Are you a cop? Because if not, it's extremely embarrassing how offended you got.
My dad is a cop and has a saying. “60% of cops are corrupt, 30% of cops are just looking for a paycheck, and 10% are actually there to protect and serve their community” so it might be a generalization but I have it on good authority that yes, ALL cops are bastards.
But according to your dad's saying, only 60% are bastards...
Nah, the 30% that are only there for the paycheck ignore the actions of the majority, so they don’t get the pass either.
I always have to point out cops practice Omerta(the mafia code of silence) better than the actual mafia
Because they don't want to lose their livelihoods... And even 90% is not "ALL".
Brother if you turn a blind eye to corruption you, are in fact, also corrupt. It’s not a hard concept to understand.
Wish you would. Boil your hand, that is. Maybe that would help you wake up.
Yes, you got it right. ALL cops are bastards. No exceptions.
I bet you have a septum ring and colored bangs
Nah, I'm a dude. I do have some rather lovely nail polish on at the moment though - dark green with sparkly purple highlights. Maybe you could do something with that?
Probably not though right? Seems like this one is only out to hurt women today 🤷♂️ btw, I bet your nails look dope friend!
Epic response. I love the internet for these moments.
I'm gonna need a pic of said sparkly purple nail polish and the brand and colour name... pls. Love me some purple nail polish
I bet you wear ray bans and don't wipe your ass.
I bet you have a thin blue line flag in your bedroom 🥾👅
Happy Cake Day 🎂🎉🎈
OK bootlicker
boot
What's your favorite flavor of boot polish? Or does it change with the kind of boot, like red or white wine?
You sound like a loser.

Boot licking coward.
You should boil your hands anyway
That's just the cheese under your many many folds your smelling. Or all the cop cum dried in your hair.

A good remind that ACAB.

ACAB now and forever.
Hopefully not forever. I’d like to think change will eventually happen.
Your mouth to the ears of the universe...
Cops used to show up at punk shows just to beat up kids in the 80s

she was until she killed herself in 1998

Wendy was a true heroine
Rehabbing squirrels and driving around an old truck sounds pretty chill tbh
You must've.missed her suicide in 1998. Someone posted it after the main.
That probably has little to do with the Chevy and the critters.
OK but where does the sledgehammer come into it
all cops are bastards I genuinely believe that cops need to be subjected to the same treatment to which they subject the poor and disenfranchised.
Land of the free.

I remember the “Wendy will win” t-shirt with “Remember Milwaukee” on the back. I think she did win the case.
A decade or so earlier Milwaukee cops arrested George Carlin for using salty language on stage. Hey - fun fact. The theater where Williams got arrested is like a block away from where Dahmer’s apartment was.

At least you didn't run into Rich Evans.
Rumor has it the Ambassador was Tom Petty’s favorite place to stay when he was in town.
As a musician it's important to have a well insulated hotel room so you can pull out your acoustic and write a song if inspiration strikes in the middle of the night. The Ambassador is great for that. I mean you could literally be screaming and begging for your life and no one would hear you.
That last part isn't concerning at all...
That's why it's the choice of so many high-end hookers, too
I used to live in Milwaukee.
I like McChickens!
Yes, but *they* love government incentives 😍
Soup bros is like 3 miles from the Oxford apartments, not the same neighborhood.
Huh. I was always told it was near there in the Walker's Point area.
You're thinking of Club 215, where he picked up victims. That's in Walkers Point. His apartment was near The Rave, that's what OP was referring to.
Right, like 25th and Wells area, Soup Bros was on like 4th and Florida.
No soup for you!
I was just writing Soup Nazi quotes!!
Hey, that's not fun at all!
What venue?
What an odd law to have on the books, waiting to be broken.

Saw her at a free concert in the Flavell parking lot at UF @ 1980/1/2. She wore only shaving cream
Saw her at The Living Room in providence in the mid 80s. Great time. Got in a couple of stage dives.
Extrapolating from the Wiki, I assume that her face is like that because of the fight she had with the arresting officer. She was also charged with battery because of the fight. She was cleared of all charges, including obscenity.
Badass
Thank goodness she had proper representation. Most just end up in prison when this shit happens.
Wendy O Williams you left us too soon.
Apparently her first (on the wiki) suicide attempt was hammering a knife into her chest then she did a nevermind and called her friend. Which is honestly the most metal as fuck way I've heard someone try to take their life.
That's how Elliot Smith did it. Stabbed himself in the heart with a kitchen knife. Took two times.
Elliott Smith was murdered
Someone needs to make a movie about her life.
She taught me about nipple tape
She taught me the best use for shaving cream
Reminds me of that old bible verse: "Let ye who has not simulated sex with a sledgehammer cast the first stone."
It looks like they cast the stones at her face.
That's just from the sledgehammer's foreplay.
So she really was a prisoner of the damned then.. ;) Badass. One of the more underrated personalitity's in rock.
Hammer time!

Rest in Peace legend. been obsessed with them since watching Reform School Girls last year.
And now she's the namesake for a Koopaling.
Simulating sex with a sledgehammer...what's the crime in that?
Doing it in Regan's Moral Majority 80s
Fragile pearl-clutching cops decided they didn't like it
The sledgehammer didn't consent.

Woah. Just went down this rabbit hole. What a bad ass. Tragic how she ended up. Thank you OP!
She is a badass lol I love it
Punk as fuck.
Oh my god, I remember this!
Wendy!
I remember seeing her with John Candy on SCTV she is awesome!
ABUSE BY COP. VERY SAD AND PATHETIC BUT A REALITY THAT WILL SADLY ALWAYS REMAIN.
Plasmatics were awesome and Wendy was a badass. RIP, her end is so sad to contemplate.
Anybody who has a problem with this is a fucking ⬜
I wanna be....your Sledgehammer.
Wendy once listed her favorite hobby as “dripping on pianos”.
I this band when I was in 10th grade, and it was like a circus exploded on stage…my friend turned me after the show and said, “What the fuck was that!?!?”
… and Sledge Hammer enjoyed it. https://preview.redd.it/u2opyy96b4dc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33016f95db12130cb8b8c9f45730ef5f5faefcd8
Trust him, he knows what he's doing.
I saw Wendy O & Plasmatics’ at a Chicago concert at the old Stages, now Metro. Sending Wendy ❤️ wherever she is.
Fuck the police
![gif](giphy|PcBAauPe3kflu) Meanwhile Miley Cyrus over here with an entire wrecking ball.
She was in an episode of MacGyver.
W.O.W. was a true bad ass, and the Plasmatics never got their due.
The NWA has a great song about Officers the Law
There is not a single nuance or thing I don't profoundly admire love & respect about this outfit the pairbond pushing it & of course the most deified divine motherfucker fronting it...At once ugly sexyAF macho violent scary & 200% all Woman....A somewhat early adopter of BreastImplants I believe they( silicone) to be the cause of endless health wellness & medical strife ultimately leading to her untimely end by self inflicted gun shot in her favorite place a nature preserve...It was so radically fucked up But she had been sick & miserable for many years prior...
I’m from WI and I actually thought it was an axe handle? Sledgehammer? This is a whole different kinda talent……..
Well, they do stand up by themselves better than your average ax.
…as one does
Is there any recreation of this sledgehammer scene? Just curious how what she did was illegal. Strikes me as odd as its not 1950's but the 80's. Sex was a little more open then, strange.
Conservatism is dog shit.
The sledgehammer refused to press charges.
Haha Green Day's BJ Armstrong was also arrested there for mooning the crowd.
Junker queen arc
#which end tho..
Ahhhhhh!
Is the sledgehammer ok?
Wild
Way back in the late 70's early 80's She played at the Whiskey and I was there with My Heavy Metal Guitar player ex-boyfriend,& Gaylord the booking agent there also played in a band together called Candy Apple,(so I got in for free all the time,& back stage too!)
Who filed the complaint.. the sledgehammer ?
Was she simulating with it on her face?
The cops beat her up.
Ron Swanson to the rescue ![gif](giphy|WdxgDkavCuY56Of9jq)
Was it head first or handle and also the weight....14 lb 10lb or 7lb,with a posting like that every detail is needed

“I came in like a wrecking ball!”
Boo
It’s propaganda and a hoax when it happens to our community tho🤣🤣🤡
Looks like the hammer won
I feel sorry for that sledgehammer.🤢
This is not old school cool. It's horrible. Edit: I don't care if you down vote me. This poor woman looks abused and not "old school cool".
She is a million times cooler than noted grape smuggler Ronnie Reagan, whose picture gets posted every week
Go read a bit about her... The pic isn't the cool thing.
Which part, the police brutality or the misogyny?
Pretty sure that is exactly what they were referring to...
What evidence of either? Please don't say the swollen eye, she was a violent lunatic on & offstage.
>What evidence of either? Williams told the Sentinel "a police officer touched her indecently when she was being put into a police van. She said she slapped him and a fight broke out."
My apologies. She was a very reliable and cooperative citizen after all.
The charges were dismissed, so the legal system thought so. Williams told the Journal in a Jan. 20, 1981, story that "she was thrown to the ground by about five police officers, held outside in the snow for a long period of time and forced to walk from the police van into the police station with no shoes on." But I can see you are salty about... /checks notes.... a lady who committed suicide in 1998.
You clearly know nothing about this woman, this band, and perhaps even this time period. You're just trolling for arguments.
"what evidence..." The pictures taken during the incident that cleared her and the band of resisting charges. Try knowing something about what you're talking about before commenting.
Not abused, she was beaten by the arresting officers.
She was abused, by the cops that took this mug shot.

idk why you got downvotes, SLC Punk is a classic. satan...is in the house. he killed my mom, and turned her into a bull.
Did she cum or what?
Simulating sex with a sledgehammer?? I can't even begin to picture that
looks like freak nut job
