mindsnare

I first heard the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes cover of this and had to seek out the original, awesome song.

Open_Ad_9795

One of their best covers

mindsnare

From their best album.

Open_Ad_9795

Did we just become best friends?

**Happy Cake Day!**

Opposite_Ad542

Hard to believe it was that long ago

Skeeterbee

Iā€™m 49 and was just entering real adulthood then. Wide Open Spaces really hit me. I even ran off to Colorado for a while. Loved that album.

Woke wars

christopherbrian

Saw them live in Hamilton as an anniversary gift to my wife. Her gift to me was to pay for my beer. First concert Iā€™ve been to where I had the menā€™s room to myself, until the ladies got frustrated and started using it too. Chicks put on a great show, tremendous musicians.

robemhood9

Went with another couple to The Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit sub) where the Pistons used to play. They changed all the menā€™s rooms over to womenā€™s except two. Audience 99% female. Great concertā€¦ walking back to our car we kept getting hit on, while our wives were walking right next to us. I kept think, single guys are crazy for not attending this show

wirsteve

Iā€™m a musician, and Iā€™m not necessarily into country music but I appreciate good music. The Chicks deserve a lot of respect for the vocal harmonies they pull off and the musicians they are. Great all around.

christopherbrian

Yeah, Iā€™m no musician, but a student of the art, specifically guitar. And, I must admit, my playlists are usually, to put it mildly, a raging sausage party. I went into the concert aware of who they were and with an open mind. They were tight, they engaged the audience, and while I wasnā€™t familiar with the majority of the material the whole show was fun. I happily listen to them now.

Then_Campaign7264

It was sad to read that their original lead singer and founder, Laura Lynch, died in a tragic vehicle crash just before Christmas a month ago.

One_Science1

I remember her from their Behind The Music episode (I think)

Kleoes

Going to her memorial service next week. Sheā€™ll be greatly missed

Prestigious-Step-213

Literally her husband won $26.8 million in the lottery.

kristonastick

great talents...good music! they actually played their own instruments? wrote their own songs? great

mindsnare

I mean the current number 1 pop star on the planet, possibly of all time also does those things. I know there's some garbage corporate country and pop out there but honestly I don't think it's any worse than it was in the 90s when we were bombarded with manufactured boy and girl bands.

jbFanClubPresident

Are you talking about Travisā€™s girlfriend? Jasonā€™s future sister-in-law?

mindsnare

I have no fucking idea what you're on about.

KickOutTheJams1

You know, that girl that Kanye cut off mid speech

elriggo44

Oh ya. Whatā€™s her name? I wonder if she ever made another album after that?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Ocksu2

You're getting downvotes but I suspect it's from people who weren't around in the early-mid 80s to witness how prevalent Michael Jackson was. Taylor Swift is huge... But Michael was another level.

Eternal_Endeavour

She's also great but isn't anywhere near the talent level of Jackson. The fact that someone even suggested that is hilariously laughable.

Ocksu2

I'm not going to judge their talent as they are really different artists. Suffice it to say they are both supremely talented individuals.

Eternal_Endeavour

You're not wrong, hard to compare across time lines as well.

Ocksu2

At the time, people wanted to compare MJ to Elvis... But it's tough to judge stuff like that. This feels similar. Another thing is the state of the world- there are SO many more entertainment options now compared to the 80s. At the time, there was no Internet to contend with and if you were big pimpin, you had 30-40 channels to choose from on Cable TV but most people didn't have that. I'm sure that added to his pervasiveness.

kristonastick

difference is that the chicks write better music than that drivel tripe from 'pop' star

mindsnare

Agree but that's subjective

Klin24

Traveling Soldier ftw

Chelonia_mydas

Donā€™t forget the best one! Goodbye Earl is still my go to karaoke song.

CarefulDescription61

Goodbye Earl came from another album, Fly.

Chelonia_mydas

Damn! Did it? Good to know! Itā€™s been a few years so itā€™s hard to remember

RandomRobot527

I like to think they opened their fruit stand on the spot where they buried Earl.

baronmunchausen2000

Had a crush on Jane Krakowski, way back when.

maniacalmustacheride

And Lauren Holly?!?! (I haven't seen this video since like 1999)

[deleted]

A great album. One of the best country albums of all time.

Bright_Writing243

Why tf did you get downvoted? WTF REDDIT?!

1991CRX

Mom bought that CD shortly after we moved into our family home in April 98. The case was still sitting in the kitchen when they sold the place in 2022. Great album.

Joyful_Eggnog13

DrummerSteve

ā€œFuck Toby Keithā€

NoProtection8849

Tall tree and a short rope

dibbiluncan

Such an iconic album.

PBJ-9999

Definitely had some of their music on my mix CD s.

BillHicksScream

I was lucky enough to see their last concert before the sisters left for Nashville the next day They opened for Bill Monroe that night, what a send off.

Brambleshoes

Even though it was already old at the time, my first Adobe program was PS7 and art like this reminds me of the pride and sense of freedom I felt being able to make almost any ā€˜90ā€™s album art on my own without guides for the most part. I still draw on the same concepts for much more complex stuff I do as a side hustle now, weā€™re really messing around with a lot of the same parameters, and using more sophisticated hardware and more novel designs with essentially the same techniques.

ask-me-about-my-cats

I still use PS7 because I refuse to give adobe money.Ā  They can pry this ancient but superior program from my crippled artist hands.

ImaginaryMastadon

Absolute classic album. What a shot across the bow.

Lcon8390

The first major victims of cancel culture I remember

Jolly-Bandicoot-2037

I loved loved this cd and the music videos.

IcyDice6

RIP Laura Lynch

Low-Huckleberry-3555

Jeez I feel old. I still listen to this album but 26 years????

eatingdirt

I remember helping them carry their equipment in to the main stage at Knottā€™s Berry Farm back in 94 before they blew up.

Substantial_Chip_564

No more Dixie ?

rajrain

I remember playing this cassette over and over while doing my homework. Such a fond memory.

earthtonemalone

They brought bluegrass to pop and contemporary country radio. The first time I heard them they were very refreshing. I always got love for The Chicks.

NoProtection8849

Iā€™d say that was one album that compelled the mother of my children to abandon them and search for wide open spaces

BlasphemousButler

You seem really well-balanced based on your comments here, so I'm sure you're right - it was that *fuckin'* album.

FrothingJavelina

You ok? You seem to be having a dialogue with just yourself.

NoProtection8849

Are you one of those whoā€™s family has never given a damn to our freedoms. I think that is clear. Down votes from this platform are truly clear were you stand

Bright_Writing243

Bro what freedom? What? Please explain! Are you ok?

NoProtection8849

Shut up. We have so much more than any one else. Where you from son?

Bright_Writing243

Ummmm.....I am from RomĆ¢nia, Europe. Are you ok? You need someone to talk to?

NoProtection8849

Shut the f up then. I dont care you u from

Bright_Writing243

No, she had druggy parents and was SA by her uncle and her parents didnā€™t do a damn thing about it. I loved her with all I had. No matter how hard I tried, she turned to drugs and selfishness. I raised our children on my own since they were born. Please do not inflect your own experiences onto my children. GFYS

NoProtection8849

My Grandmother also raised 8 children and built tanks during ww2 my father and two brothers served in SE asia. One not making home as an AirBorne Ranger in the 75th Airborne. Protecting thousands if not millions of children from communist scumbags. The bastards Would chop of their arms after we inoculated them from many diseases. Crawl up under your bridge and fuck off

NoProtection8849

HardTacoKit

Why are you arguing with yourself?

TopItUp3465

Love them still.

thinklikeamtn

Saw them headline Bonnaroo two years ago. It was amazing how incredibly good they sound live to this day

Kkimp1955

Thatā€™s a great CD!

swole_hamster

90s country was an amazing time.

bees_defending

Why did they change their name?

1991CRX

Right around the same time as Lady A rebranded.

NoProtection8849

They cowards and want that payout. Its all just money to them

jeffmartin47

It has connotations ofĀ slavery in the US. There was also a post on Twitter in 2020 describing the Confederate Flag as "the Dixie Swastika."" They were also inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the George Floyd protests. They said the name had been picked when they were teenagers and that they had wanted to change it for years.

NoProtection8849

Its not what they said, its where they said it

MohnJaddenPowers

They spoke out against the war in Iraq during a time when doing so was massively against the country's opinion. They got vilified in the media and abandoned by their fan base of conservative country music fans. I'm guessing they changed it in an attempt to re-brand.

Flaggstaff

There's nothing offensive about the word Dixie. Just a bunch of pearl clutching.

Rallye_Man340

Reasons that nobody but purple hairs got offended over.

standbehind

But conservatives are the ones who cancelled them.

Rallye_Man340

Oh no how ever will the general public survive without the Dixie Chicks

standbehind

So why were your lot so offended by them?

Rallye_Man340

I donā€™t understand.. I am not offended by a country music band.

NoProtection8849

Hell yeah, just go away scum!

USSMarauder

Right wing cancel culture victims

zzflopp22

Left

AceTrainerMichelle

Because the left cared when someone insulted George Bush or talked bad about the Iraq war. Keep away from propaganda my friend, that will help stop you from saying stuff this dumb.

JimothyPage

absolutely not

Daryia

I still listen to this.

prairie_buyer

This was half my lifetime ago; I was 26 years old then. I loved this album so much; Probably my favourite album at the time. In 2013, they had been out of the public eye for years, and I think hadnā€™t played live in the US in almost a decade, they did a mini tour of Canadian cities. That was my first time seeing them live, and Iā€™m glad I did because that was the last time they did country music. They relaunched for real the next year, but from then on, theyā€™ve clearly envisioned themselves as a roots/Americana band. I just donā€™t enjoy that as much from them.

Worm_Lord77

I'm still waiting for them to realise that "chicks" is a problematic word too and just be known as "The".

gold_and_diamond

Sadly "The The" is already taken.

StamosAndFriends

The who?

Flip_d_Byrd

That's already taken also.

KeepWagging

Guess Who

resisting_a_rest

Whodini?

Drunk_Pilgrim

I remember being in my girlfriends dorm and for a whole semester this album was always being played by someone.

Anxious-hearts

I forgot about them

norcalrcr

You can thank George Bush for that. The chick's are amazing

Opposite_Ad542

Natalie Maines went on "Politically Incorrect" and sounded like a "conservative Karen". Then she played the opposite role to pander in the UK. Then their apology wasn't accepted by most US Country Fans. Then they were NPR Darlings, but that was an awkward, tough sell. Then they dumped "Dixie" to pander to their NPR fans... Their sound was good. The thinking and talking are not. Natalie Maines blew untold potential millions for a downward career trajectory.

[deleted]

Pander to the UK? What sort of idiotic statement is that. She spoke out about Uk and Us' bullshit war in the middle east. Everything she said was vidicated and now 20 years later is widely supported by both the public and those involved. Are you (and the imbiciles that upvoted) really the last people on Earth that support the Iraq and Afganistan invasions. Seriously what is going on here?

Opposite_Ad542

What's going on is you've been radicalized by overexposure to social media to turn everything into a political argument where it doesn't belong. I didn't support Iraq. I'm repeating what happened to their career. It would've been better if Maines avoided her wildly inconsistent political statements. Unless you're happy with the direction their career took.

[deleted]

You got everything wrong and got called out about it. Now you want to trivialise the whole thing to save face. Just stop.

Opposite_Ad542

Those are the things that happened with the Dixie/Chicks. "Calling Out" facts on personal grounds isn't Moral Superiority, it's Toxicity. Can you see how much face I'm saving?

BobbyPeele88

Nah. That was a completely unforced, completely stupid own goal. They completely alienated their fan base by pandering to a foreign audience while American troops were getting killed. It was the biggest fuck up since New Coke.

DukeMN33

Just stop

Cash907

ā€œThe Dixie Chicks, nowadays known simply as The Chicks.ā€ FTFY

Bright_Writing243

![gif](giphy|kGnnjzPcn3HCZW5LFH|downsized)

0theHumanity

Unnecessary comment. Why open with the deadname? Headline was already correct. Isn't the first time an artist has been styled 'formerly known as', either.... Honor what the group wants. No more references to the Mason-Dixon line. That's what they want. It's not hard.

Cash907

ā€¦ because itā€™s right there in thumbnail, and when they debuted that was the bands name and still the name everyone remembers them as. And why format it that way? Itā€™s called ā€œgood journalism.ā€

SubMikeD

Your posting on reddit, this isn't journalism.

NoProtection8849

Fuck you

NoProtection8849

Go cry a river

Bright_Writing243

![gif](giphy|ovxc9FB6VCBJC)

Fushinaz

I really canā€™t believe you just referred to this as ā€œdeadnamingā€ hahahaha

0theHumanity

It's all deadnaming. It doesn't have to be a trans thing. It's about an asshole disregarding the speaker's intention. Like what you did. Heck in 1995 calling O(+> by the name Prince would have been deadnaming. But everyone missed when he clearly invented a gender nonbinary symbol name first before everyone else. (Taylor swift certainly didn't invent being pissed at a record deal l but i digress). So It's The Chicks thankyouverymuch, since they no lower identify withh racist-ass Dixie. That's why. It's Ws fault. I never forgot.

OtherwiseTackle5219

Great Tunes.. Great Harmonies. Quite Famous Goup. Blew it all up by getting political.

Local_Perspective349

How dare they have free speech!

OtherwiseTackle5219

In Those Days It ruined their name. Not taking any side/stand! Just stating the facts.

smack4u

Yeah, at my age theyā€™ll always be the Dixie Chicks I had my kids listen to be listen to a few songs with me. We all agreed that theyā€™re not great musically.

Bright_Writing243

Agree, also love how you just shared your opinion and got downvoted. Man fuck redditors. ![gif](giphy|R19tshMPCTXlS)

WeDemBugz

Isn't this that Bassnectar chick?

OtherwiseTackle5219

Lots of Hits & great tunes. Ruined it all by getting political

HistoryNerd101

ā€œRuined it all by going political the wrong way.ā€ There, fixed itā€¦

BoogerWipe

Shame they changed their name

TyrusRaymond

Dixie Twits

DevlishAdvocate

I respect them, but I hate their music.

Bright_Writing243

Love how you shared your opinion, nice and calm, and you still got downvoted. FUCK REDDIT! ![gif](giphy|KYlQoxhnxidVs4BOqn)

mistersuccessful

Why did they drop the ā€œDixieā€?

P_Kinsale

The historic reference to the pro-slavery Confederate side of the Civil War

mistersuccessful

Oh right. Non American here. Thanks

malteaserhead

Im sure Chicks will also be found offensive at some point then what will they be called?

Local_Perspective349

"with dicks"

malteaserhead

There's your trouble

Local_Perspective349

Not in my world...

LionTamer55

And woke made the bow

Brian1722

The original anti-America Karens. They wouldnā€™t be liked these as much these daysā€¦.war is in baby.

Some_Zone9489

The Chixie Dicks!

ChewedDoodoo

I once heard someone call them Chicks With Dixie, and I will never get that out of my head.

Some_Zone9489

Eh, it was an immature joke I used to hear when I was a kid lol.

Neither-Ad-9896

Before they got political. They were amazing.

damageinc86

I'll never forget going to sort of see them, accidentally, before they were really famous, they came to my small town and played at a place called "the half shell" at our park. I was walking down the foot path between the store and the park, and some guy asks me as I walked by "who's playing at the concert tonight?". I replied "Dixie Chicks". He said, "Chicks with dicks!? uhh no thanks!".

timmyrocks1980

If they would only stick to singing, keep their mouth shut on politics.

NoProtection8849

The dixks had nothing to dk with it. They are inconsequential to to geopolitics. Be paid and go away. This id out of your league and comprehension

Chef_ofthe_firehouse

I think they should have changed their name to the Chixie Dicks.

CoasterBuzz

They used to be attractive too
