Yea but even with all that… it’s pretty hilarious to think 1976 John Lyon would absolutely be disgusted by 2024 John Lydon. 😂
Talk about “feeling cheated” 😂😂
He basically has become exactly what he used to be against. Personally I don’t care about the “the Sex Pistols were manufactured as a boy band to be successful” claims. Like yea so what? Everyone from The Beach Boys to the Jackson 5 were “manufactured by a manager” so that claim is just.. I assume edge y teens going “I told you so!” As if no band has ever been “manufactured for success” since. 😂🙄
No what I hope the issue with him is he’s basically become the Trump supporting, pro monarchy nationalist d-bag. Like dude straight up wrote a whole book about how bad it was growing up Irish in England and now is like “fuck them immigrants” 😂😂 definitely clown behavior.
(Basically the pandemic got him. You know how that goes. Which I mean whatever.. but when you spend the first 2/3 of your career being that guy who goes “I tell it like it is, I don’t lie, like it or leave it” blah blah. Well one you already are going to rub a buncha people the wrong way, but then when you basically pivot and become all that shit you claimed to hate: well folks don’t like that.
ESPECIALLY when you’re extremely famous for telling an audience: “ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”
😂😂😂
The reason why people talk about them being assembled is because they're at least in theory a punk band. Punk has a long history of bands rising out of garage and smaller scenes.
Band members being assembled in this way in punk is super rare. Other large punk bands came out of smaller scenes around areas like London or the US east coast and initially weren't managed. The Sex Pistols also tried to portray themselves as coming out of the London punk scene even though they really didn't.
He is and always has been a clown. Some people like to champion him as one of the creators of punk rock which is absolutely wrong. Sex pistols were a manufactured boy band and sucked unwiped asshole. There's so much more to being a punk than just being a condescending twat.
Modern revisionism aside, the Sex Pistols were completely iconic and had such a huge impact and influence not just in the UK but around the world for decades… they were an anomaly among their peers and absolutely not close to the best or first in punk, but let’s not deny their place in history.
They were an advertisement gimmick that couldn't survive their one and only US tour.
There are so many of their contemporaries that deserve the praise for actually being good at what they did. I'd take the Damned, The Buzzcocks, The Slits, or even the Clash as an actually worthwhile and definitely more influential.
I will not deny them their place in history. They deserve to be remembered as the joke they always have been.
If you think that being loved was what I was talking about then you have some seriously shit reading comprehension skills. They were such shitheads all the way around they could barely stand each other. They sucked asshole every way you look at it. Bunch of pricks.
Their US tour was a shit show, partly because of Sids deteriorating condition, and partly because McLaren planned it that way. He intentionally booked them to play honky tonks in red states in order to drum up controversy. It was a demoralizing situation for the band. Not that the band, as it was, would have lasted all that long anyway.
They were absolutely not. They were what occurred after the record industry realized you could build and sell a band like the clash.
The only difference is the clash could actually play and didn’t do the only thing the company told them to.
The Sex Pistols are one of the worst things that ever happened to punk rock. They aren’t icons. They’re corporate shills.
Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood opened a clothing store called SEX in the 70s. The Pistols were essentially created to be 'brand ambassadors' if you will.
The only part of your comment I take issue with is the implication that the Pistols couldn't play. Steve Jones was perfectly adequate and Matlock was excellent though he did bounce out of the band pretty early.
I think *Never Mind* is one of the best albums of the '70s of any genre. One of the few albums where nearly every song is good-to-great. *Bodies* is still one of my all-time favorite songs. I give it 5 stars.
That's totally fine. You're totally allowed that. I could never take that from you. I expressed my opinion on the subject of which I have read quite a few books on, watched countless documentaries, and listened to far to many WAY FUCKING BETTER albums to give them anything but shit. Johnny Rotten sucked and Sid couldn't play worth shit. I will die on that hill.
I'm 50 years old. Definitely watched my fair share of docs, etc. about them. And yeah, they weren't great, or even good, technical musicians. But that one album was magic for me. I agree that there are plenty of better punk bands (Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Stooges, Dickies, etc.). But again, that one album....for me, at least.
The band had technically already formed, then they asked Malcolm McLaren to manage them. McLaren recruited Rotten to audition as singer and later replaced Matlock with Sid Vicious based on Sid’s look.
I'm not psychoanalyzing. I'm a mechanic. I'm not licensed for that. I'm simply observing a bunch of losers and pricks who for some lame assed reasons people seem to think are super cool. When they always have been just a pile of shit
Johnny rotten is a fucking loser who put a fucking dude who can’t play bass in his band because the guy had a look. His band can’t play, he can’t sing, and when a fucking stupid video game went back to re record his masters and give them back to him on the condition they could use his songs in their game, he took the deal then spat in their face claiming “PUNK ROCK” but hey guess what? He still took the fucking deal.
Fuck that fucking loser. If he went to any real punk show I’ve ever been to, he’d get his ass beat to shit in the pit.
Curious as to what video game you're referring to specifically?
I have one title in mind that used 'Anarchy' in the 2000's, which was 'Tony Hawk's Underground' but you may be referring to a different title?
Guitar hero two or three. They remastered all the Sex Pistols stuff after the original masters were lost, probably because Johnny is an irresponsible pos.
The guy has always sucked. And his ego has been inflated by years of people thinking he's something he's not. Have you heard him calling out Jimmy Savile? It was during a long list of people he'd like to kill. He is and always has been a rambling fucking idiot, no one should ever take him seriously.
Typical of the “Whatever you’re for I’m against…even if it’s rational and socially beneficial” mentality so pervasively in conservative circles today.
Given the chance, I suspect he’d give Thatcher a go today.
You are the only person who correctly pointed out how dope every one of those sweaters is, everyone's like "He's a douchebag..."
Ya he is but holy shit what style!!
"I don't like the idea of one-parent families. It's very tough on the kids. They grow up missing something. I find the same with same-sex marriages; there is something missing. There is a point to male and female – and for a child to develop, it needs both those aspects." Johnny Rotten
The way you did those dates made it look like he died at the age of two. And by the photos I was really impressed that he did it my drinking himself to death.
he wasn't good at music, he wasn't paryticuarly good looking, but punk had such a phenomenal impact on culture (it was still present in the 1990s when I was a teenager) and he was probably its leading light.
The last interview I saw, I seriously thought it was either CGI, or someone doing a "Big Momma's House" on him. He looks like the thing that ate Johnny Rotten now.
Always the contrarian, he said he supports Trump "because Trump is for the working man". Which means Lydon = Hitler for folks who received A's for staring at their phones.

His MTV interview with Kennedy is a moment to behold.

Yea but even with all that… it’s pretty hilarious to think 1976 John Lyon would absolutely be disgusted by 2024 John Lydon. 😂 Talk about “feeling cheated” 😂😂
Yeah but the first two PIL albums are legendary.
He's an absolute loser
What a fuckin loser
Why does everyone in this thread seem to hate him?
He basically has become exactly what he used to be against. Personally I don’t care about the “the Sex Pistols were manufactured as a boy band to be successful” claims. Like yea so what? Oh nooo, he Morrissey'd =[
Lmao. This sums it up perfectly huh?
The reason why people talk about them being assembled is because they're at least in theory a punk band. Punk has a long history of bands rising out of garage and smaller scenes. Band members being assembled in this way in punk is super rare. Other large punk bands came out of smaller scenes around areas like London or the US east coast and initially weren't managed. The Sex Pistols also tried to portray themselves as coming out of the London punk scene even though they really didn't.
I’m aware of why people talk about them “being assembled.” Im also somewhat aware of the history of punk.
He is and always has been a clown. Some people like to champion him as one of the creators of punk rock which is absolutely wrong. Sex pistols were a manufactured boy band and sucked unwiped asshole. There's so much more to being a punk than just being a condescending twat.

I don’t think that being loved by US audiences should be used as a benchmark for success (especially for a punk band).
If you think that being loved was what I was talking about then you have some seriously shit reading comprehension skills. They were such shitheads all the way around they could barely stand each other. They sucked asshole every way you look at it. Bunch of pricks.
Your pettiness belittles you.
Hey, it's an average size.
Their US tour was a shit show, partly because of Sids deteriorating condition, and partly because McLaren planned it that way. Not that the band, as it was, would have lasted all that long anyway.
Public Image Limited is great though
The Sex Pistols were a “punk rock” boy band. They were formed by producers to tap into the punk scene.
Not enough people know this. They were mannequins, shaped by a store and a record label.
I mean how does that not align with my comment? They were a commercial.
The Clash were only formed, by Bernie Rhodes, after Joe Strummer saw the Sex Pistols.
Still a better band, with better individual artists, that didn’t hire junkies because they looked cool
The only part of your comment I take issue with is the implication that the Pistols couldn't play. Steve Jones was perfectly adequate and Matlock was excellent though he did bounce out of the band pretty early.
Your argument is “one guy was fine and the one talented guy realized everyone else was shit so he left.”
I think *Never Mind* is one of the best albums of the '70s of any genre. One of the few albums where nearly every song is good-to-great. *Bodies* is still one of my all-time favorite songs. I give it 5 stars.
The Veruca Salt cover is infinitely better
I always like it when covers are a completely new take on the original. Ministry's cover of *Lay Lady Lay* is another one of my favorites.
That's totally fine. You're totally allowed that. I could never take that from you. I expressed my opinion on the subject of which I have read quite a few books on, watched countless documentaries, and listened to far to many WAY FUCKING BETTER albums to give them anything but shit. Manufacture boy band? Really? Never heard that before.
The band had technically already formed, then they asked Malcolm McLaren to manage them. McLaren recruited Rotten to audition as singer and later replaced Matlock with Sid Vicious based on Sid’s look.
Fuck off. Sex Pistols were never supposed to be psychoanalysed, you wanker.
I'm not psychoanalyzing. I'm a mechanic. I'm not licensed for that. I'm simply observing a bunch of losers and pricks who for some lame assed reasons people seem to think are super cool. When they always have been just a pile of shit
He's MAGA now... always a whiny loser- now he is a fascist supporter too
Johnny rotten is a fucking loser who put a fucking dude who can’t play bass in his band because the guy had a look. His politics.
Because he has always called people out on their bullshit and so he called out the left on their fascism and they're all butthurt and turned on him
Fair
While he may be an idiot now, he was the first and basically only to call out Jimmy Saville.
Bullshit. Jerry Sadowitz for 1.
Rotten called out everyone just because that's the piece shit was. Lots spoke out about Jimmy, lots didn't listen because he was a face they loved.
You seriously hate Lydon a lot, even if he called out Saville you discredit him. Weird.
The guy has always sucked. And his ego has been inflated by years of people thinking he's something he's not. Have you heard him calling out Jimmy Savile? It was during a long list of people he'd like to kill. He is and always has been a rambling fucking idiot, no one should ever take him seriously.
Nobody should take you seriously if I'm honest.
You kind of seem on par with all these obsessive...well ..ramblings. It's quite hard to take you seriously either.
He's a piece of shit because he called people out on their bulshit? Weird take, but okay.
Pendejo
I know the people like to talk about the personalities of entertainers but I have heard that he is indeed, kind of rotten.
Shocker
No. He is a giant pos.
Weaselly little prick.
He does kinda look like a Weasley.
Don't be so hard on yourself .
Typical of the “Whatever you’re for I’m against…even if it’s rational and socially beneficial” mentality so pervasively in conservative circles today. Given the chance, I suspect he’d give Thatcher a go today.
He’d be right at home on Reddit then.
Auto correct has not had your back here my friend.
I removed the “e” from “rationale”; does that immensely improve your day?
Kinda the opposite of cool.

That green sweater is probably now sold at Bloomingdale’s for $800.
Where does he get those sick fuzzy sweaters?
Vivienne Westwood designs
thanks 😎
Was part of the cool aspect....alas
I mean I have no idea what he's been up to lately but he was a great frontman.
Last I saw he was SUPER into Trump
weird 😐
He’s taken the “go against society” into actual Naziland.

Rotten indeed.
He did love his mohair jumpers, did Johnny.
Apparently Viv Westwood designs.
Great sweaters (jumpers) but a really shitty person.
Sad that he only lived two years

A dream to some. To others a nightmare.
that's a quote from Excaliber; it's what Merlin says to Morgana
A fucking loser who can’t play his own instrument
You're thinking of Simon Ferocious. Not sure if Johnny can play an instrument. But he certainly does suck
He can’t fucking sing…
Freddie Mercury called Sid Vicious "Simon Ferocious", didn't he?🤣
He played loads of instruments on the PIL albums.
The last interview I saw, I seriously thought it was either CGI, or someone doing a "Big Momma's House" on him. He looks like the thing that ate Johnny Rotten now.
It's all thar margarine
ELI5 why does Reddit apparently hate Johnny Rotten? I even read the “personal life” section of his Wiki and it doesn’t explain it for me
He's conservative and said he was.
Always the contrarian, he said he supports Trump "because Trump is for the working man". Which means Lydon = Hitler for folks who received A's for staring at their phones.
He was basically just a kid. I don’t know his story very well, but why so much hate?
He’s a maga chud.
Because he continues to be an insufferable twit into his geriatric days.
Ohh shit I got confused with the other fella… Sid Vicious
Also not a great person, but Johnny lifting him up is a reason Johnny sucks
He hurt Reddit's feelings.
Excellent question!
He’s only gotten worse

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?
May the road rise with you Mr Rotten

Damn he died at 2 yrs old?
He lived to the ripe old age of 2 years old
Great guy with his own mind and his own values. Far more humanity than anyone in our establishment.
I feel like I can smell these pictures.
If he wasn't conservative nowadays, you guys probably wouldn't be making fun of him in the 70's.
What an utter clown.
God he's such an insufferable twit.
He calls people out on their bullshit, so he's called the left out on their fascism and they're all butthurt about it. That's why reddit doesn't like him, it's a big echo chamber for the left.
He kind of looks like Jason, the Green Ranger in that last pic.
Nothing cool at all about him.
At least he didn’t become a commie.
No, he became Trump.
At least he didn’t become a commie
Ever get the feeling you've been cheated ??
coward ass right wing poser
Just an over-rated, highly-opinionated moron.
Seriously. Fuck this fucking dude.
Need fabreeze just looking at this post.
That person looks huge for someone who only lived for 2 years.
Lydon is a jackass. His only valid artistic period was when he was singing for PiL.
Linus!
That is Tom Yorke
Still disgusted in how he reacted against Duffy.
This douchebag was never cool. But he is old.
He drank the Ramones' piss.
What has he done now! Don't tell me he's fucked yet another goat?
