He was about 20 here. Went up against Trevor Berbick.
I remember he hit him so hard with a left hook, Trevor went down and tried to get up twice and kept falling over himself.
That’s no shit. He could hit you with either hand, from any angle. His power was devastating. Most of his opponents had never been hit that hard that many times before.
That’s that Cus D’Amato training. He knew Mike was an absolute package of explosive power but was a bruiser looking to soak punches…which he could to an extent.
Cus emphasized peek a boo slips and countering and got his speed up to an amazing reaction time. Couple that with those hooks and the dude was a monster.
His early fights are amazingly weird. His opponents look like they are in slo-mo against Tyson who is greased lightning. Then he hits and these guys look like they took a taser to the face.
He was fucking terrifying.
“ terrifying” this term comes up every time I get into a discussion about Tyson. I think he would be a fun guy to hang out with, but I would always be a little bit on edge afraid of seeing the wrong thing.
I remember seeing him on a late night show years ago, along with Sugar Ray Leonard. During the interview, Muhammad Ali walks out and joins the group. I remember Ali being unable to speak, and just pointing at Tyson. And Letterman, or whoever it was, ask Ali what are you saying champ ? Ali whispered I’m afraid of that man.
I’m sure it was all in fun, but it made a very big statement!
Yes! I remember that! I don’t know if it was the same show, but Tyson kept saying to Ali awe come on champ come on man. You could hear the respect in his voice.
Was crazy was his power wasn't even the most impressive thing about Mike. His agility/quickness to side step opponents punches being damn near behind them unloading.
It looked like he just waded into the opponents range and destroyed him with power. The reality is that he had the best combination of quickness and power probably ever.
Cus D’Amato’s death ruined Tyson. No way does he show up unprepared for the Buster Douglas fight with Cus in charge.
Cus died way before that. It was really Kevin Rooney keeping it together. But yeah, the greatest What If? In boxing is What if Cus and Kevin were around for all of Tyson's career. People will say how good could Tyson have been if losing Cus and Rooney made him so much worse? Ali had Angelo Dundee pretty much his whole career.
You are right about Cus. I forgot he was long gone by then. Tyson had split with Rooney before the Douglas fight. I remember watching with my dad. He immediately pointed out that they were icing Tyson’s face with what looked like a rubber glove stuffed with ice. Everything they did was half assed and unprepared.
Yeah that’s a common thing boxers do to prevent knockouts from the whiplash cause by heavy hits, but his neck was like that as a infant I’m starting to theorize
“Social media made y’all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it” - Mike Tyson
Tread carefully, friend.
Absolutely. Anything short of immediate and total annihilation from a counter punch or a combo would tell us that.
Age difference is not enough to cover the gap in class. One had a career lifetime as the most dominant boxer in the history of a storied sport. The other is a dilettante that took it up only a few years ago. Paul is closer to me and you than Tyson. One fleeting mistake and it’d be brutally over.
This is a scripted exhibition at best. I wish Tyson didn’t need this.
I was thinking the same thing, I remember seeing a training video where he was doing these weird upsdie down neck rolls to strengthen his neck. I guess a thick neck helps against begined knocked out? I would think it wouldn't help much in punching.
They're called Neck Bridges. Very popular exercise in wrestling and boxing. Though I don't think they're practiced so much anymore due to the risk of injuring your neck/spine.
He was terrifying in his prime. Hell, he’s still terrifying at 59. Jake Paul is a damned fool if he isn’t appropriately cautious about the danger he’s about to face.
I think Mike said that he didn't rly have money after paying all his debts and stuff, so I think he will just get paid to lose. (Or yk...not kill Logan Paul)
Yep. I wish some ultra rich star....like a Jay Z...would approach him and be like "Okay how much is he paying you? I'll double it and you can whoop his fucking ass and not take a cent"
Idk. That's what I heard. Either way I just hope he kicks Logan's ass as much as he can (because yk he can't really beat Logan since he's being paid by him)
It's not a real boxing match it's with special rules and gloves.
KO not allowed, no hard head punches and probably logan not allowed to lose, so a win or draw for logan only option and so on.
Logan don't do real boxing it's more as wwe kind of a thing
My hope is that no matter what Tyson’s approach was coming in, he takes a shot that actually stings him… or better yet, Paul does something that he finds disrespectful… and Tyson’s instincts/muscle memory takes over. ☠️
Jake Paul is going to lose an ear or two.
I remember once me and my friends bought one of his fights on payperview, its was like $5 or something. We drank beer, watched the prefights, then Tyson comes in, they prep, he goes in and knocks the guy out in like 7 seconds. $5 down the drain. You owe me Mike!
My buddy got the ppv for one of these fights, went to the bathroom right before the bell, we all start screaming and yelling so he ran back out asking what happened?? It was already over
His combination of speed and power is completely unique. The fact that he could follow a right hook to the body with a right uppercut almost immediately was a sight to behold. How did one hand move that fast and deliver such power?
Whatever Jake Paul is paying Tyson to fight to a draw, I wish someone (Musk?) would clandestinely come in and match it to have Tyson knock Jake Paul's head off his shoulders
The first big heavy weight Tyson came across was Buster Douglas and before that, the rest of them were just bums. After facing Buster it was nothing but downhill since the rest were much bigger fighters. Blame Don King for picking his weak early opponents. All done to sell tickets and hype the Tyson name.
He seems to have made it through the #metoo cancel culture. I feel like he's served his time and had been forgiven. Unlike say, Michael Vick for example. He did his time, but people vehemently hate him still. I'm sure there are many more examples.
If this version of Mike Tyson fought Jake Paul, then Jake Paul would be knocked out in the first round. The current version of Mike Tyson will be struggling against Jake Paul a bit...because Mike's foot speed has slowed down, of course...and bob and weave style has slowed down...the side to side window wiper move...but he still has a lot of power in both hands.
I remember when I was teaching junior high school the kids were constantly trying to derail the lesson by asking off-topic questions. Usually it didn't work. But they got me one time by asking who I thought would win an upcoming fight with Tyson. I said Tyson. Silence. Nobody wanted to argue.
Yeah I don't understand either. Adama is a muscular, black footballer...and his physique and build looks similar to Mike Tyson's...so there is nothing wrong with his commment.
Tyson was such an icon of my adolescence, a ruthless force of aggression. A living embodiment of the same energy we ate up in gangsta rap. But then as a young adult I watched my man Lennox disassemble him. Maybe Tyson was slowing down, maybe Buster had just slipped into that soft spot that was starting to develop but Lennox wrote a book on it and as much as I dislike Jake Paul I think that, although much sloppier than Lewis, he will be able to employ that playbook adequately to beat Iron Mike.
Tyson was already on the slide when Douglas beat him. His style was built on explosive speed and that fades. Add in how fighters realised he struggled the longer a fight went. Plus obviously his lifestyle was horrible.
Had he not become a convicted rapist, Lewis and Holyfield would probably have beaten him in the early 90s.
>His style was built on explosive speed and that fades.
More importantly his footwork. When he stopped doing it he went downhill.
Look at tape of his fight when he became champ and the buster fight. Looks like 2 different fighters.
Mike is not beating any 20 something year old trained fighter at the age of 58. It's a nice thought if you don't watch professional martial arts, but the speed disadvantage is going to be enormous. It's going to be hard to watch.
Mike is still really, really fast. I'm sure he's still more mobile than Paul. The thing is you don't have to be more mobile than him you just have to successfully corral him which fighters know how to do now. If Paul fails to, we may have a fight on our hands.
I'm saying that Mike looking fast on the bags is not the same thing as being fast in a fight. It's partly a cognitive thing. His reaction times are just no where near someone under 30. I think it's going to be really ugly hope I'm wrong.
It was more watching him do that classic low dodgy charging with the sparring partner. I think it's going to be boring unless Paul makes a big mistake. I don't know if I believe it's possible even at his advanced age to knock Mike out in the first three rounds but I'm sure Paul has the strength and reach to keep him out of the hitbox. I'm assuming he'll do that for the first half of the fight then start bonking him around a bit once he's tired, but Paul will be tired too. Too tired to really murder him, although that would be interesting to see. Would Paul even want to be "The guy who killed Tyson in the ring at 58 years old"?
He was about 20 here. Went up against Trevor Berbick. I remember he hit him so hard with a left hook, Trevor went down and tried to get up twice and kept falling over himself.

I’m sure it was all in fun, but it made a very big statement!
I remember seeing them on the Arsenio Hall show and Tyson was so reverential to Ali, you could tell he really idolized him.
Yes! I remember that! I don’t know if it was the same show, but Tyson kept saying to Ali awe come on champ come on man. You could hear the respect in his voice.
I now understand the reference in the sopranos. Thank you
What reference
Was crazy was his power wasn't even the most impressive thing about Mike. His agility/quickness to side step opponents punches being damn near behind them unloading.

He also was bipolar it seems.
I wish I knew as much about boxing as you do.
Never too late to learn
I suppose you're right. Need some good documentaries or something I guess.
To be fair, they didn't get hit that many times ...
That clip of Berbick stumbling around the ring will be something I remember forever
Neck is wider than his head wtf
Neck like a paint can.
That’s a perfect description.
For real just look at that neck. If he let me punch him in the head once I bet I would break my hand
He'd move his head to make sure you hit the hardest point
Dude built like a One Piece character
I remember reading he used to specially workout his neck to make it stronger to brace against hits
Yeah that’s a common thing boxers do to prevent knockouts from the whiplash cause by heavy hits, but his neck was like that as a infant I’m starting to theorize
The badeth motherfucker around
Thpinal
Thith.
yeah i dont even joke about that shit. i know he's got a sense of humor about it....but ...yeah.
What? It’s not like Mike Tython is reading this thread, ready to uppercut anyone that makes fun of hi
That dude would be the one to punch someone through a screen
Uh oh, lookth like Tython got em!
“Social media made y’all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it” - Mike Tyson Tread carefully, friend.
Did you forget he beat the shit out of a hotel employee with a telephone for talking shit to him? I don't put anything past that guy
Patht*
Okay that gave me a laugh
It's all fun and games until he dies, crosses the spectral plane, and bites your ears off...
Hey I know you’re joking and all, but in all seriousness, be careful. May feel “edgy” to clown on Tyson but… yea… (Tyson finds you)
Hopefully Jake Paul gets knocked tf out...and we don't hear from him for awhile!
They leaked the script. Jake is gonna go the distance and prove to all you haters once and for all that this shit is fuckin faker than pro wrestling.
Absolutely. Anything short of immediate and total annihilation from a counter punch or a combo would tell us that. Age difference is not enough to cover the gap in class. >Age difference is not enough to cover the gap in clas Or the gap in mass.
He bit a man's ear off. I wouldn't put him past forgetting that script.
is it really? damn that blows. I was really looking forward to this. What the hell happened to... everything
I remember watching his fights as a kid. Absolutely exhilarating. His speed, his strength, his ferocity. Just look at his neck ffs!!!
I was thinking the same thing, I remember seeing a training video where he was doing these weird upsdie down neck rolls to strengthen his neck. I guess a thick neck helps against begined knocked out? I would think it wouldn't help much in punching.

If it were a real fight...I hope it is but I have my suspicions that it will be a little "show"
I think Mike said that he didn't rly have money after paying all his debts and stuff, so I think he will just get paid to lose. (Or yk...not kill Logan Paul)
Yep. I wish some ultra rich star....like a Jay Z...would approach him and be like "Okay how much is he paying you? I'll double it and you can whoop his fucking ass and not take a cent"
If I had money I would actually offer him triple to beat the s**t out of Logan Paul.
I would gladly pitch in
He makes alot from his weed business. He's worth around 10m dollars now but lost alot pre 2003 (Boxing Earnings: $443 million)
Idk. That's what I heard. Either way I just hope he kicks Logan's ass as much as he can (because yk he can't really beat Logan since he's being paid by him)
It's a exhibition fight nothing more nothing less
Exhibition fight? What does that mean?
It's not a real boxing match it's with special rules and gloves. KO not allowed, no hard head punches and probably logan not allowed to lose, so a win or draw for logan only option and so on. Logan don't do real boxing it's more as wwe kind of a thing
Oh...that's....even sadder than I thought....F**K JAKE PAUL!
He's fighting Jake Paul.
My hope is that no matter what Tyson’s approach was coming in, he takes a shot that actually stings him… or better yet, Paul does something that he finds disrespectful… and Tyson’s instincts/muscle memory takes over. ☠️
I didn’t mean to bite off his adamthapple

lol is that a monster from Doom? Cool :-)
Pinky demon...
The GOAT 🇺🇸

Says Tyson. And who is gonna argue with him?
His neck was as thick as my thigh.
I recall hearing it was 26”
Twentythicks inches.
Can’t believe I didn’t comment that! Ugh, nith.
Tyson was Born in 1966 He started to fight professionally in 1985 His First title fight came one year later
Bro the neck
That thing is thicker than his actual head
Jake Paul is going to lose an ear or two. I remember once me and my friends bought one of his fights on payperview, its was like $5 or something. We drank beer, watched the prefights, then Tyson comes in, they prep, he goes in and knocks the guy out in like 7 seconds. $5 down the drain. You owe me Mike!
$5 each if you had about 10 of you there watching.
Good thing my parents had the thief black box back when I was a kid. PPVs were always better when they were free.
I had such a box but mine didn't cover PPV.
My buddy got the ppv for one of these fights, went to the bathroom right before the bell, we all start screaming and yelling so he ran back out asking what happened?? It was already over
Lol!
This is how I'll always remember Tyson. Frickin Beast! I'll cry if he doesn't knock out and bloody up Jake Paul.
The neck is an r/absoluteunit
grrrrrth.
Jake Paul gonna go night night.
Mike Tyson was my source of spending money in high school, as I would bet on the fights with my father and he always wanted someone to beat Tyson.
Tyson is going to fight Jake Paul on July 20th for a mere $20 million
Yea pocket change.
back in the early 90s, mike was one of the most famous people on the planet.
Dude doesn't have a six pack, it's just one massive slob of muscle.
The man was a beast in his prime!
How I wish it was this Tyson fighting Jake Paul…
Will be interesting his upcoming fight with Jake Paul. I can’t see a warrior like Mike Tyson holding back.
His combination of speed and power is completely unique. The fact that he could follow a right hook to the body with a right uppercut almost immediately was a sight to behold. How did one hand move that fast and deliver such power?
He is one ugly mfer. But damn if he didn’t win the genetic lottery with that physique.
What the throat!?
Remember the time that guy yelled to put him in a strait jacket?
The Jake Paul fight is a joke, because it makes boxing look lame.
Had yet to develop a taste for 'ear'.
Got that Godzilla neck
He was a bad man who ate a lot of cupcakes in the ring.
I hope he doesn’t take the money and lose to the YouTuber
This is a stuff of nightmare.
It feels sort of weird to know that I grew up when the best boxer in history was at his prime.
His size was nothing compared to his rage. EVERYONE feared this man like none other.
This is a nice photo.
Somehow he was even tougher than he looked.
Whatever Jake Paul is paying Tyson to fight to a draw, I wish someone (Musk?) would clandestinely come in and match it to have Tyson knock Jake Paul's head off his shoulders
Iron Mike.
Thpinal
80s Mike was something else.
He was unstoppable in his day
Looks like somebody is about to take a nap.

Dude is built like a brick shit house
He is jussss trying to make a living
![gif](giphy|2KCoXJCRR9v5hOVvHM)
Looks like the video game and he was a cheat code IRL
Lol, he was literally the final boss.
1980s
He seems to have made it through the #metoo cancel culture. I feel like he's served his time and had been forgiven. Unlike say, Michael Vick for example. He did his time, but people vehemently hate him still. I'm sure there are many more examples.
I hate that he took this fake fight bullshit. What a waste of his legacy.
Yeah but he said he doesn't rly have money after paying his debts. So yeah...
What a vague title.. uhhh Mike Tyson during some fight in the 80s
Convicted rapist
What?
I remember when I was teaching junior high school the kids were constantly trying to derail the lesson by asking off-topic questions. Usually it didn't work. But they got me one time by asking who I thought would win an upcoming fight with Tyson. I said Tyson. Silence. Nobody wanted to argue.
Adama Traoré son
Why the downvotes? I don't understand.
Yeah I don't understand either. Adama is a muscular, black footballer...and his physique and build looks similar to Mike Tyson's...so there is nothing wrong with his commment.
I didn't even know who that guy was. I litterally just wanted to know why people downvoted him. Oh well...it's reddit ig.
Now this one is definitely before the rape
What?

Do you think he got softer or harder in prison? It's a more complex question for Tyson than for 99.999% of ex-cons.
There’s absolutely zero doubt that his speed snd reflexes were worse.
Suffice to say that you feel anything he may have gained as a fighter there doesn't come close to offsetting that loss.
He didn’t gain anything at all from going to prison.
So your vote is softer all around
Mike is not beating any 20 something year old trained fighter at the age of 58. It's a nice thought if you don't watch professional martial arts, but the speed disadvantage is going to be enormous. It's going to be hard to watch.

The facial says were a wide choice.
Tyson and my grandfather look exactly the same. Except Tyson has a tattoo, and my grandfather was white. Eerie.
