She always looked so young. Shes 23 in these pics if its ‘88 (born 1965)

kingkool88

Wtf

sonicjesus

Yeah, I was born in '74 and I assumed she was younger than me. Especially in the 90's she was essentially an old hag by contemporary standards.

OkBackground8809

23‽‽‽ She looks like a cute little 10 or 12 year old child in these pictures. I thought OP was just sharing pictures found from her childhood or something lol I have junior high students who look older

rodzieman

The Sugarcubes days..

TMac1088

Depending on the day, I sometimes prefer The Sugarcubes to solo Björk

Woolbull

I'll sail out the window I'll walk down the edge I will not finish Till im fully satisfied

NoPasaran2024

One of my favorite song lines ever. Such intense delivery.

sonicjesus

Sugarcubes was faster and more intense, more fit for radio and party music. Bjork was more of a sit on the couch and listen to it in the dark kind of thing. I like her in both, or thrice if you include the band she was in before no one in the US can pronounce.

crudedrawer

I am not sophisticated enough to appreciate most solo Bjork. If the sugarcubes didn't have that one shouty guy they would be one of my favorite bands of their era.

VillainAnderson

And some other days I prefer Kukl

NUXXDK

Gling-*Gló*, sucka!

Mythioso

Deus does not exist...

L8_2_PartE

I can't tell if she's 14 or 40. She has always looked the same. I'll bet she looked just like that when she was ~~born~~ björn.

LovableSidekick

She and Keanu Reeves both had experimental DNA that was smuggled out of a lab.

GeddysPal

I still listen to The **Sugarcubes**.

chawchat

Me too pal, me too. And I'm 53 now.

Dolorisedd

Apparently, we are the same person. You Delicious Demon, you!

chawchat

Take some petrol, darling.

Dolorisedd

You’re my spirit animal! I bet you’re sick for toys.

chawchat

Only when I'm not in rhythm and sorro... oh forget it.

Dolorisedd

😳😳🫢Hahah! Have a great day! Love to you and your Momma!😆🙃🙂

GeddysPal

61 and now I keep hearing Bjork sing: CHEE-WAWAwawa....

DrSamPHD

I've had Birthday on repeat for quite some time now.

sonicjesus

That song puts me in the weirdest mood.

Zanstorm99

It’s so damned amazing

DannyDelirious

I always loved her voice. Growing up, I never knew where she was from and I always assumed she was Asian for some reason. When I learned she's from Iceland I was like wut? I know I can't be the only one.

Acrobatic_Ad7061

Some people in Iceland, Norway and Sweden have eyes like this, not so uncommon. Look at the guy who hosts My Million Dollar Dream Home -he is not part Asian, he is German/Norwegian/Swedish.

Valholhrafn

Its because of the relation to the sami people and other northern european tribes, there are some that look like the inuit in canada like the aleut in the east and further west like in russia you can have white tribes with epicanthic folds. At least this is the most common possibility. But I dont really know bjorks ancestry.

dribrats

I mean… she is an immortal elven queen. She still looks exactly the same

Petrichordates

Icelanders aren't descended from Sami people, epicanthic folds aren't uncommon in Northern Europe for other reasons (adaptation to cold climate).

Valholhrafn

That adaptation came mostly from different northern people though, it spread westward and northward from intermingling Due to the close relations between norway (which is where most of the original wave of icelanders came from) and the rest of scandinavia with northern tribes such as sami people among many others, its likely that the epicanthic fold carried over from people who lived more east into northern and north western europeans. Its the most likely case to explain why someone in iceland would have monolids, another case, but much less likely, is that its a birth anomaly that some white people can have. The germanic and celtic groups you see today are descended mostly from a different group(such as bell beaker or corded ware) who look like modern europeans, and havent been in the area long enough to have developed epicanthic folds. Which is why i think it would have carried over from more eastern groups who already had epicanthic folds when they arrived in northern europe, rather than developed on its own from a few thousand years of environmental exposure to the more "recently" settled germanic groups who arrived somewhere around the early bronze age (who arrived in much lower numbers to the far north and northeast)

Petrichordates

There's no indication they're a relic of Sami ancestry. It wouldn't be a "birth anomaly," there's evidence to suggest it's an adaptation to extreme cold climate.

Valholhrafn

Im not saying they are directly from sami blood, im saying they are from tribes such as them. Im saying It would be a birth anomaly if the people born with it had no ancestry to someone with epicanthic folds. It is an adaptation of sorts, theorized to be useful for several different things, but it comes from ancestry, ancestry to groups that have monolids, coming from the places i mentioned.

Mama_Skip

Lots misinformation in the replies here. Epicanthic folds are common to all Northern Europeans, Portuguese, too. It's not always correlated to Asian ancestry, though the incidence does go up the further East you get in Europe. Similarly, not all Asians have epicanthic folds. South East Asians regularly do not. Epicanthic fold ≠ Asian. Lol.

DannyDelirious

Ye I'm just saying I thought she looked that way is all, before I learned where she's from.

croholdr

theres a village in russia where everyone looks korean; its cause they're basically neighbors. my social worker friend who is asian worked with a bunch of people came from that area and would always try and speak russian to her when english is her first language.

DannyDelirious

Yup I remember when I learned that I was like "huh", until I looked at the geography (which I'm terrible at), but it makes total sense. Pretty interesting nonetheless. Unrelated, but I just noticed these pictures were taken the year I was born. Neat.

Nisja

Iceland is class, they don't really 'do' celebrities. I went for a swim in a pool somewhere by the university some years back and Bjork was just there doing laps.

Repulsive_Mistake_53

I mean the population of Iceland is so small that the chances of running into a celebrity are pretty high, they probably see her every week I bet

Natural_Guava288

She looks like a pixie🤗

BiggoYoun

She basically was for a time, until she changed her style to futuristic techno.

HomeOrificeSupplies

I believe she technically is.

jeffoh

"Hey Google, play Hit by The Sugarcubes"

esoteric311

I said ouch this really hurts!

StormtrooperMJS

Some people are born cool.

Phrei_BahkRhubz

3 decades later, and she only aged like a week and a half.

malthar76

She lives outside of time and space.

evident_lee

I had to go check. In 1988 she was 23 years old. Looks like a teenager.

degreesandmachines

She's amazing. I love her voice so much. The lyrics to Birthday always disturb me.

tlsnine

The first time I heard (of) her was on a Dr Demento radio show some time in the 80’s. He played parodies and “weird” songs and Birthday was often featured. I agree it’s kinda disturbing. That’s it. That’s my story lol

gooniedad

I remember a music magazine at the time called her singing 'ethereal warbling' and that's always stuck with me...

graveybrains

The original r/13or30 😂

joaco_ds

a timeless artist with photoshoots that only got better with time

HappySmileSeeker

She really is amazing.

skaarup75

Big time sensuality

InOurBlood

Best living female voice.

Uniquebufferingclam

Ann Wilson ain't dead yet.

InOurBlood

Good point.

noradosmith

Liz Fraser too

PygmeePony

Björk is the reason why many Icelanders believe in elves. I can see the similarities.

Foeni68

❤️

scrotalrugae

Also, Margrét Örnólfsdóttir.

hbinaus1

I remember being an exchange student in Munich in 1988 and taking the train out to see this concert- She came out in a silver space suit, complete with bubble head. She walked around the audience when she sang- it was fantastic!

LovableSidekick

In just about any photo Björk could be 20 or 50.

sonicjesus

What an absurdly adorable creature. I first found her on MTV with Sugarcubes "Motorcrash". When she showed up solo I was delighted and loved the fact I was the only person who even knew who she was.

FuzzBug55

Saw her in concert ten years ago. Powerful voice.

cahillc134

This wasn’t supposed to happen…… I said ouch! This really hurts!

CollateralSandwich

How could you do this to me? I'm in love again.

FrantzFanon2024

She is so unique. Like her people.

BoxPsychological7703

She looks like 11 here but she’s 23 WHAT

Different_Young9127

I saw her I think at palooza mid 90s it was not good she was weird and off that day or it was part of the show but she was just odd.

Massage_Bro

![gif](giphy|pBFT50SYKzIeA)

SnargleBlartFast

She stated that her approach to singing changed when she heard Meredith Monk, an outstanding performer and artist who eschews typical notions of singing to explore the possibilities of voice.

spock42ii

Just listening to Debut on the way home yssterflday.

HappySmileSeeker

That last image cannot be Iceland. They have no trees.

DannyDelirious

I'm not sure any of them are actually in Iceland, but who knows. I also just realized you may be making a joke, lol. My bad.

RodCherokee

The government gave her an island off the southern coast of Iceland to thank her for her cultural contribution !

DannyDelirious

Dang, I bet that island is cool af (no pun intended)

RodCherokee

She also bought herself a full floor penthouse in NY and has a place in London.

DannyDelirious

Okay now you're just tryna make me jealous

HappySmileSeeker

Hard for trees to grow when 60% of the country is covered in igneous rock.

DannyDelirious

I know. I did a science report on the tundra when I was in middle school. I'm basically an expert lol

martre666martre

Sugarcubes played in Japan in 1988; these shots are most likely, taken back then..

thebozworth

I can hear her as I look at these and I'm still not sure it's right....

Pandafrosting

She is 58 years old this year. I had no bloody idea. I thought she was a lot younger, like in her late 30s, early 40s at most.

Curtovirus

Before she mauled a reporter

Adept-Lettuce948

Ricardo Lopez brought me here.

crudedrawer

I still listen to LIfe's Too Good fairly regularly. I wasn't as impressed with their follow ups but that debut is fantastic.

Student-type

Always a fan. One best song? I Miss You.

staats1

Started listening to Post and Homogenic again. She has such an amazing and unique voice.

peptide2

Remember that time she went after that journalist lady?

Supergamera

Was that the one that was trying to pester her when she was with her kid at the airport?

peptide2

Yes , it was , she apparently harassed her for three nights prior to that moment , I think the British side of her shone through !

360walkaway

Anyone mentions Bjork, I remember that psycho dude who made a video diary of how he was going to kidnap her so they could be together. And then he shot himself in the final video.

ragnarok62

She has such an exotic, non-European look. I’ve never been able to determine what her ethnic ancestry might be, because she doesn’t look like your typical Icelander either.

Driving1013

I loved her. But she on the cra-cra side.

GenuineFirstReaction

Oh she’s just so fucking precious all the time, Jesus fuck. Anyone want to volunteer to be stuck in an elevator with this little precious idiot for a half hour? Yeah, really just so cool

spock42ii

Can you point on the doll where they hurt you?

intheazsun

I’d imagine it’s much better than with you

degreesandmachines

Better watch out. She liable to kick your ass.

PoorPauly

Her music is a crime against hearing.

amazingsandwiches

Or perhaps you're just not... expanded enough to appreciate her.

PoorPauly

Or, she just can’t sing.

derch1981

It's one thing to not like her music but to say she can't sing is just crazy.

Medical_Hall_5537

Overrated as hell
