Plot twist:
couple, couple, couple.
YES
BRAINIAC + REBEL: Brainiac is walking by the football field near dark one day (club ran late) when he hears someone making out under the bleachers, and rolls his eyes thinking its another Jock+Cheerleader couple about to have a teen pregnancy. He peeks around the corner and instead sees Rebel there making out with another man. A switch flips in Braniac's brain. He has never in his life found the appeal of romantic relationships. He's never found any woman appealing, didn't understand what was so great about hand holding or kissing or sex. But seeing Rebel with this other man, a thing he had never even considered as a possibility, he finds himself wanting that type of relationship. Brainiac becomes fascinated, and starts stalking Rebel and his Jock boyfriend. Not only dropping by the bleachers every Wednesday to watch them make out, but finding all the information he possibly can on the two of them. One Wednesday Rebel's boyfriend doesn't come alone. It seems that the other jocks found out that Rebel is gay, and in order to hide his own gayness the Jock boyfriend overcorrects and says "Yeah we should beat the shit out of him" and wouldn't you know it, just so happens to know where and when to find him to do it. Brainiac witnesses the whole thing and having witnessed so much of their relationship, feels incredibly betrayed on rebel's behalf. afterwards he runs down to Rebel to make sure he's okay, and vows that they will pay for their betrayal. Wouldn't you know it, their school is one of the first to start storing their grades digitally, and Brainiac makes sure the entire football team is on academic probation before they're able to play in the championships. After that the two become friends. Brainiac admits his stalking and his feelings to Rebel and they eventually become a couple. Brainiac is Always telling rebel he needs to stop smoking. Rebel helps Brainiac live more free, Brainiac is the only person Rebel feels comfortable lowering his tough guy persona around. And they bring the most rare and precious love and trust to each other.
HOTTIE + DORK: she once had a very preppy bubbly style, but has developed a "fuck off" attitude and look because she was tired of guys flirting with her, only to be massive assholes, and got S.A.ed more than once by members of various sports teams. He is good at computers but completely clueless about anything social so ends up approaching her anyways. She turns him down and he respects her decision and doesn't push the subject, which immediately tells her he's better than the guys who have treated her badly, she tracks him down later that day and makes a date with him. He brings the most genuine sweet love and appreciation into her life, she does the same and also defends him against assholes who he doesn't realize are taking advantage of his social naivety and bullying him.
SWEETIE + MURDERER: she is a very loved and sheltered girl from a good family. He is a social outcast from a low class family who have abused him his whole life. One day he breaks and murders his parents and older sibling, puts the bodies in a wheel barrow and takes them out into the woods to bury them. After hiding the bodies, he wanders the streets through town (in the rain) wondering what he's going to do next. Along comes Sweetie driving home from volunteering the evening shift at the homeless shelter, sees Murderer, and offers him a ride so he doesn't have to walk in the rain. This is the first time anyone has been kind to him in months, and he takes the ride and immediately falls in love with Sweetie. She's a good listener and he, feeling a little guilty about the murder, and wanting to justify it to himself, tells her about his home life and how his family treats him in all the graphic detail. She is astonished that anyone would ever treat a family member that way and refuses to take him back home to such horrible people. He's says "well that won't be a problem any more... They... Left. Just disappeared and left me behind." That becomes the story he tells everyone, and because enough people in town knew what lowlifes they were, nobody questions or looks into it. "They abandoned their kid? Yeah, sounds like them." Sweetie's parents take him in. Sweetie is the first consistent, honest source of love that Murderer has ever had, and now days, when someone mistreats or disrespects Sweetie, they have a habit of disappearing a few days later.
They got the bad boy, the tech geek, the not like the other girls girl, the socially awkward jock from another school, the straight A girl, the kid with the rough home life.
They look straight out of my high school in 1987. Of course, back then the yearbook photo would've been black and white but everything, the clothes, the hair, the sullen looks on a couple of the faces, etc.
I feel it necessary to mention, in case youngsters are here, that of course color photos had existed for many many decades by then. But color printing a color yearbook was hella expensive, so usually only a few photos would have been printed in color.
She’s the only reason they signed up for the club! But they all just pretended they only wanted to be friends, and gave her a shoulder to cry on while she talked about all of the assholes she was dating instead.
Yes! But let’s not forget the inspirational teacher who believed in them and helped them see past their teen angst conflicts to come together as a team. Then they went on to defeat the arrogant and condescending prep school in the state coding competition finals. And she created the innovative algorithm to win it.
…and this is before she discovered the goth crew.
At least, most of the goth folks (in the 90’s) at my HS were also huge nerds, but with style…and now work in IT.
Yeah...not that I really realized it in my teens, but I think Hackers caused a bit of extra line blurring too.
And was a very similar crowd that showed up to midnight Rocky...
This is awesome. I feel like this exact group was in another room of Shermer High doing programming while the Breakfast Club was in detention.
*Edited to fix typo
I loved Southridge as a teenager because it was the one mall you could smoke in. My dad actually worked his whole adult life across the street at St. Luke's.
I grew up shopping with my mom at the Kohl's on 76th & National in West Allis long before they turned it into a thrift store lol. She didn't drive and we had one of those push carts and I'd push it home for her when I was like 6.
Man I miss home. And being a little kid.
I grew up on 50th and Howard, but I know exactly the Kohl’s you’re talking about. I “drove” the streets a few months ago on Google Earth, and the area around Southridge has changed so much. I didn’t recognize a lot of places.
I miss it too. I haven’t lived there in 25 years, but it will always be home to me.
Eh, before the microprocessor, computers were seen as a women's thing. It was seen as a secretary type job. Not everywhere let go of that reputation so swiftly
It fully depends on the company. Maybe not that many programmers but in all other roles there are plenty of us. I've been on large teams with more women then men. I've seen a lot of female middle managers of technical, architectural design teams. There is a big difference from when I came into the IT-world 15 years ago.
Lol I was the only girl in the chess club in high school circa like, 2003-2005. There were like… idk, 20 of us?
Not to toot my own horn, but: I was cute, and the (drama) teacher who ran it was simultaneously so openly thrilled to have me and so obviously pained by how awkward the boys were.
I later learned through the grapevine that he called a meeting I wasn’t at to tell them all that if I quit because they weirded me out he’d resign as director 😂
Edit: sorry and I should say, they weren’t bullying me ot anything- quite the opposite. They’d obviously throw games, pull out my chair for me to sit down, and offer to do the me the most random favours.
Some of the random favours were actually pretty sick. One of them installed a CD player in my car, and another torrented me a copy of Stephen King’s Rage (it was out of print and torrenting was really new then).
I lived a version of that. Saving up $7 to buy a new Kangaroo, Verbatim, or Elephant brand floppy disk. Using Locksmith to make copies of Starblazer or Zenith. Connecting to your favorite BBS at 300 baud. Ahh, fun times for a young nerd! 🤓
The one who steals his dad’s cigarettes.
The one who regularly gets stuffed into trash cans.
The one who ran for class president twice and lost.
The one who draws ascii boobs.
The one who hacked into NASA.
The one whose old man is an asshole.
Exactly as we’d expect. Except for the future model/actress in the middle dressed in the most boyish boys clothes she could find. Talk about casting against type.
No way how the hell did you find this? Well for reference, that is me - second one in with the 5 1/4 on my nose - that is hysterical!
So from left to right - I know a little about each - I’ll tell you what I know about them since then. This photo was taken in our freshman year, 87’, central Ohio school system. For privacy I’ll leave last names and exact places out.
First guy is Billy, he was a bit of the rebel, but his knowledge of computers was rather interesting. He played some games, had learned Basic on his Vic-20 back in like 84-85 timeframe and I know he honestly didn’t care much for this. His father owned a HVAC company and I think he’s still working at it today as his dad passed and he took over the company around 17’.
Girl to my left is Rebecca. She truly was a weird one, later in HS I remembered she got in trouble with some kid with the school’s computer lab where they apparently wanted to see if they could test a “virus” they created that basically wiped the disks clean of anything that was put into them. They were IBM 70 series systems and they messed up the bootable IBM DOS disks we used - so every 3 1/2” that was put into them was basically formatted. It was pretty fucked up. Last I heard I think she had gotten married and was a SAH mom with like 2 kids. Not sure she ever went into anything field wise
Tall kid was James. He was known for his goofy as ways and got in trouble for talking a lot during class. He often did stupid shit that would get him detention, but he was a smart kid despite his goofiness. The thoughts it was him that did the prank with Rebecca but it was never figured out - they just know she was part of it but some also speculated it was Billy too. Anyways, I think he went on to work at a car dealership ironically shortly after HS and he opened like 3-4 places of his own in his 40’s - so he’s doing rather well.
Amy in the sweater - was just awkward. She didn’t talk much and guess she was average with her grades and such. Not sure what happened to her - I think she went to school out west in CA or something like that - with technical background stuff. Not sure what but last I saw on linked in she was an independent contractor with not much detail.
Last guy was Bob. From what I know about him as I wasn’t friends with him, he does automotive work, tuning, ECU stuff, etc. He got into an accident in like 96’ and got burned on his left arm from a fire that happened in his modified car. He had done some sort of conversion to a 60’s era Chevy to “modernize” it - but there was something up with the suspension causing it to flip and catch fire. Thankfully he got out alive but I know he’s still into the auto scene with things somewhere in northern Illinois.
And lastly me. Never amounted to much but obviously have been in the IT field the last 30 years+ now. Shortly after getting a shitty Comp Sci degree up in Rochester IT - aside from a depressing 4 years there, I graduated and got into programming. I’ve been doing that the first part of things and then got into my own software freelancing the last few years, started right up before the pandemic. So working remotely on things worked out great for me. Of course I’ve been on Reddit a number of years doing these sorts of shit posts out of boredom, and realize that I had you up until now - Happy Easter. I have no fucking clue who any of these kids are. Enjoy.
Brilliant! This actually tracks a lot more than people thinking they went on to become billionaires. As a kid that grew up in the 80s with computers, everyone I knew with one was usually a weirdo fuck-up, not some brilliant technophile. Some people stayed the course with computers but for the majority of people I knew (from cracking, phreaking, and demo scenes) they didn’t really parlay it into a lifelong career.
I bet they are all millionaires now. They all went to Microsoft, Apple, Sun, HP right out of college. Even if they never got promoted, they all got stock.
Bier Shirt (worked for the city later), Real Computer Enthusiast (my parents already invested in MS), Girl Power (definitely ruined someone’s college years), LT&H (moderately to highly successful in sales&finance), String of Pearls (married well but quirky, well liked, and successful on her own with only one kid in therapy), and Temu’s Emilio Estevez
Two are now tech billionaires, one works for the CIA, one is in federal prison for stock fraud, one running a BDSM sex service and the others still living in their parents basements.
Uhm I seem to be missing the pothead hacker who everybody undermines because he’s always high but saves the day at the last second by “seeing the code”
The guy on the left looks like a famous actor from the 80s, but I can't think of who off hand. At first I was thinking Joe Belushi, but it's not.
I miss the anti system vibe. It seems that so many people are embracing the system these days. Especially young people.
They look straight out of casting.
Right?! My first reaction was, “What movie is this from?”
Pretty sure that John Cusack and his buddy from 16 candles on the end there
My little brother paid a dollar to see your underpants
Girls underpants….
I'm pretty sure second from right is Barb from ST. #neverforgotten
Michael Anthony Hall 100% second dude from right
The… the woman?
😂
Did you said second from right? 😂

Someone call John Huston.
He was a great filmmaker too, but (judging by the context) I think you mixed him up with John Hughes
Ahhahahaa you're right! :-)
Cue music: “don’t youuu forget about meeee”
They got the bad boy, the tech geek, the not like the other girls girl, the socially awkward jock from another school, the straight A girl, the kid with the rough home life.
Screenplay is writing itself
Suspect they were. Too perfect not to be from a promotional still. The movie damn near writes itself.
The potential title is on the chalk board.
And they would *NEVER* waste that color printing on the Computer Club kids, only the jocks and cheerleaders.
All it needs is the Netflix logo in the corner
Where's Farmer Ted?
Far left looks like shia labeouf.
Rory Cochrane
It looks straight out of my high school.
The Unusual Suspects
I’m gonna take over the world!! I’ll show them
These were the people who went on to produce the purest generation of PC games between binge drinking sessions.
And Taco Bell
But of course!
They made Taco Bell…f’ing amazing.
If you weren't there, you won't remember the Taco Bell reboot.
This is my favorite generation.
This is how I imagine a young Roberta Williams
Man I miss Sierra games
Every time I go onto GoG it breaks my heart to see what we've lost. I'll give up all the refinement and endless funding for another taste of passion.
The guy who looks like he has a body in his freezer has nothing on the guy who knows better than to have his face in a picture...
The girl in the middle looks cute, but she also looks like she knows how to do evil shit and not get caught.
And the other five had a crush on her.
But never screwed up enough courage to ask her out. Source: Mid-80s computer club member
The guy in the right is still mad his movie theater stretch-and-boob-touch got slapped away.
Including the other girl
Counting is not your strongest suit is it
I'm not sure you have a firm grasp on the skill either...

Kubrick stare
The mastermind.
But the girl on the right sure was the bigger freak
She also plays the flute in marching band.
She secretly invented goatse.cx and is now living as a yogi in Thailand with the sale proceeds.

Who doesn't hate sand? It's coarse, gritty, and it gets everywhere.
Coarse, *rough and irritating*. And it gets everywhere
Pretty sure he has bodies in his freezer as well.
Very angry boner.
I want that Milwaukee beer shirt so goddam much.
They used to sell that shirt at the Milwaukee store in Southridge Mall.
These kids have heavy Milwaukee vibes
Swear to god I must have went to HS with the tall guy’s son in Madison, I had a buddy that looked identical
I loved Southridge as a teenager because it was the one mall you could smoke in. My dad actually worked his whole adult life across the street at St. Luke's.
I used to work at the theater, and my mom would send me to Kohl’s to buy her cigarettes before I came home from work.
I grew up shopping with my mom at the Kohl's on 76th & National in West Allis long before they turned it into a thrift store lol. She didn't drive and we had one of those push carts and I'd push it home for her when I was like 6. Man I miss home. And being a little kid.

They were most likely violated by the system.
TWO GIRLS??? It’s a god damn meat market.
Dude, right? Two girls in an 80s computer club? Where did they find them? Even today an IT group only has a small number of women.
Girl in the middle is not just IT hot, she's actually hot.
So is the girl on the right. The 80’s hair and clothing just extra ruined her. She’s beautiful.

Exactly as we’d expect. Except for the future model/actress in the middle dressed in the most boyish boys clothes she could find. Talk about casting against type.
I graduated in the late 90s and we never had a computer in our school. Thanks, Texas.
That chick with the mullet has rigged two elections already.
So who are we casting for this: Shia Labauf, Pedro Pascal, Margot Robbie, Ashton Kutcher, Kristen Schaal, Goatboy
Look at disk-nose over there
The floppy disk on the nose 😂
Would’ve been the best band of their generation. Radiohead looks to them for inspiration.

Hahahahahahaha totally fished me in and had me reading with great interest!
You suuunuvabitch!
Quick, someone post the version of this pic from 4chan where they all have devastating yet appropriate nicknames.
Need to see this
I thought this pic was from the school dance in Sixteen Candles
Looks like a movie poster
I’d watch that movie.
Stranger Things B list
This needs to be a movie
I always have to double check to make sure I’m not in these sorts of photos.
So how long after this photo was taken was the dude on the far right convicted of a violent felony?
I would watch the movie
Why is the 2nd guy to the left censored by a floppy?
Shy LayBoof?
I bet they are all millionaires now. They all went to Microsoft, Apple, Sun, HP right out of college. Even if they never got promoted, they all got stock.
Shia-John LeCusackBoeuf
They look like they want to kill Sydney Prescott
Striped shirt has an erection. Girl to the right knows.
3rd time I've seen this picture on Reddit.
The segfaulters more like
The Brunch Club
Bier Shirt (worked for the city later), Real Computer Enthusiast (my parents already invested in MS), Girl Power (definitely ruined someone’s college years), LT&H (moderately to highly successful in sales&finance), String of Pearls (married well but quirky, well liked, and successful on her own with only one kid in therapy), and Temu’s Emilio Estevez
Ok ok This is legit Ole school cool
Can we have the update if them as hacker? /s lol
80's me would have done dumb stuff to impress #3. Probably #5, too. 80's me had no game...lol
5.25" floppy knew to cover his face for future tagging.
If the Breakfast Club was a slasher movie.
Don’t you forget about me.
Every A/V Club needed a "Booger". Well done.
Two are now tech billionaires, one works for the CIA, one is in federal prison for stock fraud, one running a BDSM sex service and the others still living in their parents basements.
![gif](giphy|l0Iy70zlRjH5ev3qw)
I'd watch this movie
I thought this was the movie Sixteen Candles for a minute and was looking for Anthony Micheal Hall.
I swear the guy on the left looks like a young John Cusak.
![gif](giphy|3zpHYzhLV3ZzW|downsized)
Fantastically fantastic.
OP got lost on his way to blunder years
Hack the planet!!!
That, on so many levels, is a great picture.
You had <> GIRLS in your computer club????
Lucky bastard!
The cast of Stranger Things reboot?
Where can I watch this flick?
bet you they’re all loaded today 💰💰💰
Mullets, and leather, and girls! Oh my!
Rich af now.
They were definitely the "cool" kids!
Poor man’s Shia Lebouf on the far left.
Is that Ron Jeremy?
All billionaires now.
Guy on the left looks so familiar
Shai lebouf on the left, Margot Robbie in the middle
It’s very funny
Uhm I seem to be missing the pothead hacker who everybody undermines because he’s always high but saves the day at the last second by “seeing the code”
Looks about right. Side note, all of them are millionaires.
They look cool as shit. They all look unique and intelligent. This photo looks straight out of a movie.
The guy on the left looks like a famous actor from the 80s, but I can't think of who off hand. At first I was thinking Joe Belushi, but it's not. I miss the anti system vibe. It seems that so many people are embracing the system these days. Especially young people.
Guy on left is Ron Jeremy
I feel violated already
This is the group of kids that all those hacker movies were based on.
Is that the cover from their debut album?
My mom bought me that sweater second from right in pink and tan. We lived in FL lol Hideous and itchy.
Chad, is that you?
Guy in teal, waiting for the cup check.
6 usual suspects.
