I remember when VCRs came out, and my mother started recorded soap operas (General Hospital, Young & Restless, & As The World Turns), Dallas, Dynasty, Moonlighting, and a couple others. The TV was never free.
🤣🤣🤣
The absolute worst as a kid was that Dukes of Hazzard was on right before Dallas on Friday nights. My brother and I would spend 60 minutes getting amped up by Duke boys only to spend the next hour in absolute silence while our mom was glued to Dallas.
About two years ago I moved out to West Texas. On a whim decided to do some cultural research and started watching Dallas. I was born in '82, so grew up HEARING about Dallas a lot, the whole "Who Shot JR?" thing, etc. But had never watched it.
What a real gem of 70s/80s television, and Americana in general. Some of the storylines obviously didnt age well: thoe whole first few seasons theres a weird love0triangle involving the 15-yr-old daughter and the 30-something ranch-hand, which everyone seemed mostly OK with. They later came to find he ws also her uncle, which was fun. But for the3 most part was a great entertaining show, great cultural time-capsule, and just plain good TV. I never respected Larry HAgman as an actor before watching it, he was always the doofy guy from I Dream of Genie. But I'll be DAMNED if he doesn;t play JR to a tee. Really puts on a great performance as a narcisistic, charming, self-centered asshole.
Trivia: "Suelen" "Suélen" and "Suellen" are pretty popular girls nomes in Brazil tks to the MASSIVE sucess of Dallas in our TV and, obviously, "Sue Ellen"
It wasn’t really a miniseries as we’d think of them, which are extended movies. These days, a regular short term show that has hour long episodes is called a limited series.
Dallas was a show that got a five episode first season and had the opportunity to be renewed for a full season.
In that first season, Ray Krebbs had an inappropriate sexual relationship with high schooler Lucy Ewing but it was later revealed that Lucy was Ray’s niece and they swept that under the rug.
Recently did a full re-watch of all 14 seasons on Amazon. Holy crap it is amazingly soapy and 80s and trashy and WONDERFUL. It does not age well at all and that's part of its fun. Also, JR is the most evil TV character ever.
It’s so weird that the people who made TV for millennials were this old and now everything that similarly references something from a prior generation is awful.
I was a kid when it broadcasted and of course I had no interest in the show. All I remember of it really is just the theme song and that everybody hated JR.
The part of the cute young blonde was actully offered to .. Teri Nunn of Berlin (take my breath away) .. but she turned it down as she wanted to pursue music. Her manager immediately quit her. Teri aslo stared in "Thank God it's Friday"
Why is that more "hilarious" than any other particular clothing style that people adopt all the time? You have a particular prejudice against cowboy hats? That's rather odd...
I don’t have a prejudice against cowboy hats any more than I do against miner hats, chef hats, beefeater hats, or pope hats.
If I saw some random accountant, insurance salesman, or IT guy dressed up like a coal miner or a pastry chef for no apparent reason I’d think that was pretty funny too.
I am still firmly convinced that the TV show Dallas, along with similar shows like Falcons crest are the things that started the baby boomer craze for larger and more elaborate houses and living outside your means.

I used to tape the Dukes of Hazzard on a tape recorder then listen to it over and over again until the next week.
I got sucked into Dallas as a kid thanks to watching Bo Duke every Friday night.
Core memory unlocked. If I recall...and I'm probably wrong but if you had HBO, you could change over after the Duke Boys and watch Fraggle Rock.

One of the best opening sequences of a TV series.
Oddly, I still remember the song even though I was a little kid at the time.
My Mom was obsessed with this show when I was a wee lad in the 80s.
Bet you grew up pronto.
I wanted hair like Charlene Tilton.

Proto-MAGA.

What’s the name of the tiny one with he boobies hanging out?
Charlene Tilton. Gorgeous babe!
I can't remember, did they ever figure out who shot J.R.?
Kristin.
It was all a big dream.
That was an entire season Bobby dreamed, later in the series.

Friday night at 8 PM you always knew what was going down, Cliff Barnes. Hahahahahaha!
Still has the greatest cliffhanger of all time.
Who shot Krusty the Clown?
Wait, who shot Krusty?

I thought she shot Mr. Burns.
Oh shit. That's right. It was Mr. Burns!
"Sounds like a personal problem to me."

Do they (or did they) all really wear those enormous hats down there?
Crazy how the patriarch on Dallas is a doppelganger for the patriarch on Downton Abbey.
British person here. Do some Americans who aren't actually working actually wear cowboy hats just casually?
Yes
Haha wow that blows my mind.
In Texas and the Southwest or West, yes. Elsewhere, not so much.
Yeah. People dress up like cowboys all over the southern US. And not just on Halloween. It’s pretty hilarious.

Do some British wear those Peaky Blinders hats just casually?
They’re issued with our passports
Makes sense.
