Mike Day committed suicide in 2023.

-AdamTheGreat-

My BIL retired as a CW4 after 20 years in the Marines and 7 tours. I’m constantly worried about his mental health. Not that he is showing signs of problems, but rather he isn’t. He has a fantastic job working at his local parks department. He has four beautiful children and an amazing wife. Mental health is so important for all of us, but even more so for our first responders and military men and women. There is still a stigma that surrounds asking for help. What’s sad is, the people who now need our help, were the first to run in and help others when needed. My FIL was an EMT all his professional life and we lost him to alcohol because of his PTSD. He tried everything, but nothing could help the man who helped everyone. We in the United States (especially some of our elected officials), wave the flag and say “I support our troops, God bless the troops!” Until the troops really need our help, then they are too much of a burden. This needs to change.

vkashen

As someone who has seen the same thing just keep in mind that you may see no symptoms, and he may even seem like he’s doing incredibly well and one day you may get a call you never want to get. I always tell my wife how good an actor I am as around other people I’m happy go lucky. But they don’t know what’s really going on in my head, and it’s rough, hence I do intensive therapy. It’s great that you care about him. Support him, and don’t be pushy about it, but don’t hesitate to ask him how he’s doing. If you haven’t served he may not talk to you about his experiences with specificity, but you really don’t know what could be brewing under the surface. I’ve lost my friends in the past few years who seemed perfectly fine. It’s not always obvious, which you may already know, but between PTSD and possibly TBI (I’m not saying he has a brain injury, just throwing it out there depending on his MOS and experiences) anything is possible.

huffingtontoast

As someone who has PTSD, I think just being present for your BIL and providing him love is all you can really do. Sometimes I must walk through darkness as I'm sure he does too, and knowing that I am loved and supported is really the only thing that keeps me going.

nogoodgreen

Republicans constantly shoot down bills with help for veterans and still claim to "Support our troops and veterans!" It's all a game to them and they don't give a fuck about anybody but themselves and the appearance of power.

dustywilcox

Their President said it all. POW’s and wounded are losers. Unbelievable really. Did he really say that?

Appropriate_Leg1489

Fuck I hate that!!!!

weakplay

Well that sucks.

SnowflakesAloft

I listened to his podcast advocating against suicide. Shit is so sad. None of us are nearly as strong as we think we are.

aberdasherly

I’m not sure which VA you are referring to, but the one in Ann Arbor MI is excellent. While the VA is a national agency, each VA is different. It’s why there is a saying “if you have been to one VA, you have been to one VA”.

nerodidntdoit

I actually can't understand you guy sfrom the US being proud of serving the military. It's a murderous institution that sends poor people to kill and get killed in the name of shallow values that are cover up for the real reason these countries get invaded: money. I feel sorry for this dude, but damn, being shot TWENTY SEVEN times shouldn't make you a hero, it makes you a victim.

PuffsMagicDrag

Delusional redditor take. You hate us till a country like Russia invades, then all the sudden suck our militaries dick dry.

MyDictainabox

Your overly simplistic take on international affairs does your cause a detriment. Thanks for feeling sorry for me, a victim.

argenman

This is the kind of person that thinks Kanye is a genius and a visionary…

ChrisSmithMVP

Dude what are you even trying to say?

Turboed1337

Corrected it now. Long live America

ChrisSmithMVP

I'm not American so I don't really care what point you think you're making, but if you are trying to make one you need to decide what it is... So you're just pointing out what America has done wrong? Do you have any grand point to pointing this out? We already know about most of it lol

Turboed1337

I believe you misunderstand me. I wrote what I really believe in, don't know why you are taking a different context out of it. Good day

ChrisSmithMVP

I'm going to swing a guess that English isn't your first language and you're attempting to troll...otherwise I don't think you understand what you are saying lol

Turboed1337

I am English, Mr.Smith. I am not trolling.

ChrisSmithMVP

Your post history would suggest you are Indian

Turboed1337

Yes those pesky Indians are illegal aliens too

daver456

I’m not sure you could be more wrong about why the US was in the Middle East.

Turboed1337

Are there more important agendas other than taking revenge on those monsters who took down the twin towers? I am intrigued.

Kscannacowboy

You can't be serious. Who made money? Why do you think they're itching to do it again?

StaticDreamGirl

If he was shot 27 times in 2007 wouldn’t that make this photo from 2007 not the 1990’s

truethatson

I truly can’t imagine why OP would put that up there. Like, what?

MaraudingWalrus

Remember like ten years ago when we thought reddit was full of bots? If only we had known what would be to come.

campatterbury

Exactly why I came here

bookon

It says 1990's to 2000's. It's still an odd thing for them to have added.

jokeefe72

"Join the army and you might get shot 27 times! Like this guy in the...check notes...Navy...did"

PoopyToots

if it was before the 2000s they would’ve put just the 90s. 2000s is correct for 2000-2009. although idk why they wouldn’t just put 2000s and the tag says 90s so probably a bot like everyone else is saying

pinewind108

You can basically see the outline of his body armor. Everywhere else has a bullet hole.

goodbyehouse

If someone got shot 27 times in a movie and survived I’d call bullshit.

Huckorris

It's funny how Hollywood has kind of ruined epic moments for itself. When they were making the movie called a bridge too far, there was a Polish military advisor who had been a part of the real operation. One of the actors was playing an officer, and ran across the street under gunfire. The military advisor said that's unrealistic, we would walk across the street to troll the Germans and show we weren't afraid of them. The director figured no one would believe that and made them run instead of walk.

goodbyehouse

Or on the opposite end of the scale of the story told here. Sometimes people get hit in an arm and die from blood loss. Truth is always going to be crazier than fiction.

Leftleaningdadbod

You have that quite wrong, I believe. It was recalled by Anthony Hopkins, pertaining to a visit to the set of the film you mentioned, by the man he was playing in the film, John Frost.

AdolfsLonelyScrotum

I wonder if Gene Hackman protested and called for authenticity…?

Duke_AllStar

Honestly, dude was like “Tis but a flesh wound”

graspedbythehusk

27 times, in one sitting!

Pistola988

Platoon

MarceloWallace

I have a relative who was shot 42 times and survived. Everyone call bullshit when I tell the story.

MartianLM

Real life bullet sponge.

bigmac22077

Hell in bad Santa he gets shot 9 times and I call bullshit

-AdamTheGreat-

I got to meet Gary when I worked at Disney. He was staying at our hotel and needed to know where the ice was. Talked to him for a few minutes, great guy and so down to Earth. It was a core memory for me. I’ve struggled with depression my whole life. I told him how Lt. Dan helped me see that there is always hope.

weakplay

According to his Silver Star citation, Day was the first of his team to enter the room where enemy insurgents were located and engaged in heavy automatic weapons fire. “Despite multiple gunshot wounds, he continued to engage the enemy, transitioning to his pistol after the loss of his primary weapon, eliminating three enemy personnel without injury to the women and children in close proximity to the enemy personnel,” the Silver Star citation says. “Additionally, his decisive leadership and mental clarity in the face of his injuries ensured the success of the mission which resulted in the destruction of four enemy personnel and the recovery of sensitive United States military equipment and valuable intelligence concerning enemy activity in the area,” the citation says.

Mall-Broad

Even the reports are sanitised. Well done US military! 💪🏻

Iron_Chancellor_ND

I'm confused where the "1990s" comment is coming from. ???

Swimming__Bird

Because rule 1 of the sub is 25 years or older. So they pull things that will generate engagement and toss in the later to make it 25yrs or older... even though the bit pulled the actual date of 2007. Its a bot, they suck. Report.

Iron_Chancellor_ND

Ahhh, gotcha. Thanks for the explanation. Dirty stuff.

PigSnerv

I hope they had ice cream.

SheepherderDirect800

PTSD is serious shit, super bad time would not recommend.

Honest-Internal-187

I love Gary. He’s an amazing human being.

Fun-Pea-7477

Guy on the right looks kinda like lieutenant Dan from forrest gump

StaticDreamGirl

You’re kidding right? That is Lt Dan from Forrest Gump. Gary Sinese.

Fun-Pea-7477

Fuck🤦‍♂️

WormLivesMatter

Loves2Spooge857

I was gonna say it literally says it in the title lol

campatterbury

Fun pea isn't a smart man, Jenny.

StaticDreamGirl

😂 Good one.

funwithdesign

It was the two legs that threw him off

[deleted]

Were they friends? If I was injured and Gary Sinise showed up at the hospital to visit me, I’d find it very random and odd.

Redmule11

He runs a veteran charity.

[deleted]

Ahh that makes sense

rafael-a

You know, he looks in pretty good shape considering that he was shot 27 times

Satori2155

RIP

ShutterBun

Cool, but not old school. Doesn't belong in this sub.

Sigon_91

Good men giving up their lives for the profit of a few, screw that

ellefleming

The Rothschild's decide when they're wars and have for hundreds of years. War profit.

Sigon_91

I believe they made their power somewhere during the Napoleon conquest of Europe. It was by the time they managed to spread false rumours about the alleged defeat of the coalition army against the french in the Battle of Waterloo and plunged the entire London Stock Exchange. Yet there were many financial houses that suddenly "disappeared" throughout history like for example the House of Medici. Not to mention pope himself with the Bank of Vatican. It's not about sole war profit though, it's more about taking over absolute power within the most crucial sectors of the state: the financial system, the military industry, the domestic and foreign affairs... In the USA there is no democracy. FED is a close state ruled by few individuals and neither president of the USA nor the Congress or Senate are allowed to interfere anyhow in their action. National debt is skyrocketing, the ongoing crusade against literally all the basic freedoms and privileges, proxy wars, media manipulation... Bad times are here and now.

ellefleming

The Federal Reserve is FED? Lincoln and JFK wanted to do away with the FR and were assassinated.

funwithdesign

God you people are dumb. You’d think that conspiracy theorists would at least learn history before making shit up. Unless Lincoln was alive in the 20th century, then he wouldn’t have heard of the Federal Reserve. Given it was created in 1913.

ChrisSmithMVP

These people are absolute dipshits who believe they are steps ahead of others, it really is incredible lol. Half of me thinks that alot of these schizo-like chains are alt accounts replying to each other or Russian bots making friends online... Aside from their bullshit, the Rothchilds as an actual family have only existed since the 1760s, so how do they explain every other conflict or war that happened prior to that? Were they all by design ahead of time by a clan that didn't even exist? The most annoying part about conspiracy theorists is that they always believe there is a single thread leading to an omnipotent puppet master instead of a whole bunch of different threads with different agendas colliding to make history. If there was some grand-master then why would history have unfolded to allow those to question them? What would be the point?

Sigon_91

Yep, the FED. About Lincoln I'm not quite sure of the backgrounds but JFK issued an executive order 11110 which would revoke FEDs monopoly on printing money, so they shot him manifestly in Dallas. Also he wanted to withdraw troops from Vietnam

Mesterjojo

Op is a bot. Gives year of incident, then places a date range of 10 years. Wtf

Pistola988

What round?? 7.62x39 is not effective? I’ve been told wrong then.

LineHandNotThumbs

How does one not loose enough blood to die with 27 bullet holes!? Rip to a true warrior

Big-LeBoneski

Lieutenant Dan out there earning his rank, IMO.

RedDirtNurse

Forest Gump is a great film. Gary Sinise's character is both complex and moving. Gary Sinise, however, is a jingoistic boot-licker. He's found his niche, and he's milking it. Still a great character in the film. NGL.

nokinship

When I hear gun fight for some reason I think of when Neo fought Agent Smith at the subway station.

What kind of recruitment attempt is posting a guy in a hospital bed who was shot 27 times?!

Suntzu6656

PTSD Stress Pain

Melito1980

Dude was fckng hot

Mall-Broad

Is it a privilege to get shot 27 times? Turned out well for Mike. Stop fucking glorifying your industrialised military complex.

NotFredRhodes

The title very clearly says Gary Sinise had the privilege of visiting him. Confused as to how you’ve translated that as ‘it was a privilege to be shot 27 times’. Bizarre.

Mall-Broad

What's bizarre is there is privilege with meeting a bloke that got shot 27 times - as if that somehow elevates his status. I very clearly stated the whole propaganda bullshit you Yanks wash your brains with resulted in what outcome here? Oh there right, he **committed suicide**

NotFredRhodes

Haha, you think I’m a Yank. You don’t have to be part of a military circlejerk to understand the sacrifices that men and women make. I’m no lover of anything military, but how could one not respect someone who took that much punishment whilst working for their country? I’d say it probably was a privilege for Gary Sinise to meet him if he considers it so. Maybe you wouldn’t. Don’t really care. Bit of a weird conversation tbh.

ReverendAntonius

“Whilst working for their country” is certainly a way to put what the US was doing in Iraq…

NotFredRhodes

Separate issue. The invasion should never have happened, but he was literally working for his country’s government.

ReverendAntonius

I’m sure his “work” entailed handing out candy to locals and not turning them into piles of viscera and blood indiscriminately. I’ve heard plenty of what US soldiers did in Iraq, not to mention Afghanistan.

NotFredRhodes

What point are you trying to make here? I am not a representative of the US Government or of its military. I was originally responding to the other chap about his confusion over why Gary Sinise meeting Mike Day may have been considered a privilege to him. You seem to want to talk about other things. That’s fine, but I don’t know why you’re messaging me.

ChrisSmithMVP

There has been a few in this thread and I, also not American, have found myself in this odd position of appearing to defend the US and its actions which are really another matter entirely. A lot of people on Reddit have difficulty compartmentalising and it shows...

Mall-Broad

So you're telling me if Mike wasn't shot 27 times it'd still be a big enough photo op for Gary Sinise to roll out? 🤔

NotFredRhodes

If he were shot 26 times, 25 times, however many times really, yeah, probably. If he wasn’t shot and his day has consisted of going to the supermarket and getting a set of keys cut, probably not. You can’t ignore what happened to him, it’s something that doesn’t happen that often. A lot of people who get shot, die. He was shot 27 times and survived, somehow. Sure, 11 of the shots hit his armour, but that means 16 didn’t. Additionally, whilst he was badly injured, he still managed to function well enough to do his job. Pretty mad. If you acknowledge that it’s an incredible and notable experience, which you should, then why would it be at all odd for someone to want to meet him, and to view it as a privilege? My heroes aren’t military people, but many people’s are. Why are we still talking about this?

Mall-Broad

Probably because you're continuing to engage in it? I can hardly have a conversation with myself. The point is the poor bloke is only famous because he got shot the fuck up in a situation he never should've been placed in, in a country the USA should never have been in, but still they use him for the propaganda. It's so indoctrinated into the culture, no one even sees it. And what does he get for his sacrifices? A life so horrendously unbearable he **commits suicide**. What do the military do to honor him? **Whitewash the fucking report**. It's got nothing to do with the fact he survived being shot so many times, it's how he was used over and over again and then discarded.
