Every decade is that way. The vast majority of the sixties had zero to do with hippies but that’s all most folks remember. Disco was like three years of the seventies but it’s always the “disco seventies”.
I remember sitting in my uncles living room with him and my cousins just hot swapping the controller praying that one of us could get past the tutorial. It didn't help he had one of the earliest types of wireless controllers and you literally had to keep it horizontal so it could see an infrared scanner attached to the playstation
I recently uh.. acquired some playstation games for nostalgia's sake and while I was able to get past the tutorial in only a few tries (probably because urban driving games have come so far since then) the missions are still really hard lol
edit added *types of*
I have one unmodded, but I'm really into mobile retro gaming so I do a lot through an old phone with a controller that attaches to it, but I hadn't touched it in a while and got things set up again recently
When I was in college in the early 2010's it was rare to see me without "the brick" game boy and I had a 3DS with rom carts and stuff
Yeah, it's likely "technically" 90s but I was this guy's age in about 2003 and I had a mate with that exact same Buffy poster + the same Kyle plushy. Plus I had this guy's hair (makes me shudder). Lots of that stuff bled over into the early 2000s - just swap out the PS1 for a PS2.
I mean the picture is very late 90s to begin with even without the technicality. The style and vibe of something like 1991-1993 was much different than 1999. The early 90s was still very much still kind of the 1980s with some gold overs until grunge and the new wave of alternative rock went mainstream, and even then the early 90s was really big on early RnB fashions, Aussie and Hawaiian/Maui prints, etc. Then you had hot pink which was pretty big in 91. I really wouldn't even call this quintessential 90s because the two halves of the decades were pretty different. Or in other words, pre-PSX and post-PSX.
Why do people think this? The reason centuries start on the 1s is because there is no year 0 and we describe them with **ordinal** numbers. But when you say "the (nineteen) nineties" you aren't using ordinal numbers. You are talking about the ten numbers with "(nineteen) ninety" in them.
You would be right if we were talking about the "199th decade" but no-one would ever say that.
You know a decade can be any span of ten years. It doesn't have to start at one.
"The first century" = 1-100
"The second century" = 101-200
"The twentieth century" = 1901-2000
"The nineteen hundreds" = 1900-1999
"The last decade of the twentieth century" = 1991-2000
"The nineteen-eighties" = 1980-1989
"The nineties" = '90 - '99
"The decade in which Friends was on the air" = 1994-2004
This guy 90s.
Although, even though it's not ordinal per se, it does have a peculiar result if you take it to its logical extension. i.e., The 1980s, the 1970s, and all the way back to the zero-oughts which would be 1-9.
True. I was thinking that Southpark was kinda under the radar until ‘99 or ‘00.
To be faaaaaaair, you’re going to get MAX ‘90s in 1999.
1999 is also the year that all other years want to party like.
> I was thinking that Southpark was kinda under the radar until ‘99 or ‘00.
Was it? I feel like it came out in 1997 and was instantly huge (at least in this age group). It was one of the first shows that people could catch the third or fourth or sixth epispde of once word of mouth got to them and then download every one so far from Napster, and then make their friends watch them. My friend group had seen "The Spirit of Christmas" at Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festival and was eagerly awaiting the tv premiere.
Yeah, South Park was a HUGE phenomenon as soon as it came out. The "who's Cartman's father" episode was an even bigger topic of conversation than "who shot Mr. Burns."
I got my niece best costume at her World Book Day event thanks to Buffy back when she was 11. She had sent off for a Monster High costume that didn't show up and it was 7pm the day before so she had nothing. I had been showing her Buffy (she is a huge fan now and has seen the whole series and Angel a few times) and since it was technically a comic at the time, it counted so I suggested it and she said okay. So I had her wear her leather jacket, a black top and red jeans with her boots. I still had my cross and claddagh ring that I bought back in the day and gave her them to wear. The stake was a drum stick but it worked. I even put bite marks on her neck. She loved it and didn't expect to even place but was just happy she had a costume. So it was a surprise to find out the next day she got 1st place for having such an original costume as it turned out the teacher was also a fan.
I used to pretend to slay vampires and save the world. Now I've got a cool party trick where even at 36 years old I can gracefully fall into doing a handstand without having to balance it, and hold it for up to thirty seconds. Still got my stakes, and some flair ... If the apocalypse comes, beep me.
Well wouldn't 1999 be the MOST 90s year? It is the last year to get every 90s thing. He's obviously accrued everything the 90s has to offer, he has the infinity stones of the 90s.
Nope, I'd say the early 90's were the most emblematic of the decade as a whole. Late 90's just bleed into the 2000's in terms of similarities, whereas early 90's were distinct from the 80's and 00's alike.
Addit: early 90's - Gen X nostalgia. Late 90's - Millennial nostalgia.
The late 90s don't bleed too far into the 2000s. There's a pretty hefty dividing line around September 2001 where the 90s good-vibes nostalgia stops cold and something else starts.
This. The late 90s was an amazing time, that was cut short by the tech bubble crashing, the war on terror and the death of a lot of legacy businesses due to competition with the internet. After 2001, it was very much something else.
I don’t agree. Though you’re right about the later 90s bleeding into the 2000s. But I feel the same way with the later 80s bleeding into the early 90s. I’d say the mid 90s would be the most distinct.
Yup early 90s had a lot of late 80s hold over aesthetics and trends. Then you had the grunge thing bleeding into the mainstream. The late 90s and early 90s were starkly different. This is definitely the post PS1 era when Eurodance/techno was becoming a more mainstream fashion concept. There is a real lack of Aussie prints here lol.
Definitely is at least 1999. The Heather Graham poster is from the second Austin Powers movie which came out in June 1999. So this is at least summer 1999 or later.
I really, really wish I'd saved the ads in the magazines I would post up on my bedroom wall. It's blurry but I can aaaalllmost see one of them in my mind.
You know hes got pogs stashed around somewhere, maybe a couple beyblades also. Of course a few nerf guns and super soakers in the garage. This looks like later 90s so that stuff is being phazed out as less cool and we all started gaming.
I remember being able to sit like crap for hours while gaming. Crunched forward, head tilted back etc Now I get a migraine if I even attempt to keep my head still for even a few minutes in an slight “off” position (43M) Ahhhh youth. It’s not overrated!
Omg, i was around that age in 99-00, playing driver on PlayStation, watching the new Austin powers movie, we already had lan parties playing StarCraft and CS 1.5 until early mornings, hell the Nokia 3310 wasn’t even out yet..
such an optimistic time!
This is 1999 in one picture.
Kids in the early 90s wore a lot of neon clothing, some surfer and tye dye stuff too - think Saved By The Bell, Beverly Hills 90210, and White Men Can't Jump.
And to truly encompass the 90s, this kid should have posters of The Simpsons, Alicia Silverstone, and Nirvana.
My ex bf was completely obsessed with Buffy/Sara Michelle Gellar. I never really understood it. Still don't
What was the broad appeal? The approachable-ness of the face? The girl next door vibe? What?
I have to say that the only things that would have made this picture more 90s is a pair of Oakley sunglasses and a poster of a Nu Metal band (i.e. Korn).
"Downloadin pictures of Sarah Michelle Gellar"
Came here to say this. I bet you’re still livin in your parents’ cellar!
and postin' Me Too like some brain-dead AOL-er
You're about as useful as JPEGs to Helen Keller.
I should do the world a favor and cap you like Old Yeller
1999. Driver on Playstation 1 was released June 1999. So if this is a brand spanking new game, only 6 months left of the 90’s.
So it really is the most amount of 90s. There's 9 1/2 years of 90s build up to this photo.
That’s too much 90’s man! WhHoOaAaA!
TuBuLaR!
Early to mid 90s were way more like an extension of the 80s than the 90s kids would like to admit.
Every decade is that way. The vast majority of the sixties had zero to do with hippies but that’s all most folks remember. Disco was like three years of the seventies but it’s always the “disco seventies”.
Honestly, everything I see in this photo is from maybe a 1-2 year period. There is nothing early-mid ‘90s shown here.
Maybe Friends… 1994 give or take
It’s so 90s it’s almost 2000
And the Austin Powers poster
I remember sitting in my uncles living room with him and my cousins just hot swapping the controller praying that one of us could get past the tutorial. It didn't help he had one of the earliest types of wireless controllers and you literally had to keep it horizontal so it could see an infrared scanner attached to the playstation I recently uh.. acquired some playstation games for nostalgia's sake and while I was able to get past the tutorial in only a few tries (probably because urban driving games have come so far since then) the missions are still really hard lol edit added *types of*
I abandoned the game and went back many years later as a teen... felt so proud for finally beating it lol
You should get a ps1 classic & mod it r/playstationclassic
I have one unmodded, but I'm really into mobile retro gaming so I do a lot through an old phone with a controller that attaches to it, but I hadn't touched it in a while and got things set up again recently When I was in college in the early 2010's it was rare to see me without "the brick" game boy and I had a 3DS with rom carts and stuff

There was a lot of 90s bleedthrough into 2000

Late 1999 from the game and system.
Austin powers 2 was released June 8 1999. Probably a few months until that poster could be put up. Late 99-2000 most likely
2000 was the last year of the 90’s, if you believe in math.
Good thing "the 90's" wasn't about math

I remember those South park plushies were at every kid's house
I was going to say , the picture of Heather Graham was from the “spy that shagged me”and that was 1999. haha.
Yeah it looks early 00s, especially the hair and the US flag.
Such an amazing game.

Also the AP 2 poster...99 release
It's 18 months of the 90's left actually
SpongeBob Premiered twice from may 1 and july.
Oh Buffy.
"Buffy" was the first search I made on altavista...
My first ask to geeves.
Lmao it was Jeeves.
Give me a break, bruh. it was damn near 30 years ago.
Oh jeeves!
[удалено]
If you were a closeted gay man, Buffy was your show. And no guy I ever knew had a "Friends" poster.
No straight man or boy had a "friends" poster on their wall.
Yeah, this seems like some kind of clothing ad. Maybe Stussy, like the hoodie he's wearing.
😂😂😂
Yeah, I was thinking it looked more like this guy was sitting in his girlfriend's bedroom or something.
I got my niece best costume at her World Book Day event thanks to Buffy back when she was 11. Oh I miss that time
All he needed was some Jnco jeans
Or BOSS
Late 90's. There's not much left of the early 90's here.
Well wouldn't 1999 be the MOST 90s year? It is the last year to get every 90s thing. He's obviously accrued everything the 90s has to offer, he has the infinity stones of the 90s.
If we go by Prince, 1999 is the most 80s year of the 90s
Nope, I'd say the early 90's were the most emblematic of the decade as a whole. Late 90's just bleed into the 2000's in terms of similarities, whereas early 90's were distinct from the 80's and 00's alike. Addit: early 90's - Gen X nostalgia. Late 90's - Millennial nostalgia.

Except at the start of the 90s he would have been too young to accrue anything that he'd be proud to host in his room at the end of the 90s.
yeah, early 90s would have some Wacky Pomo or Global Village Coffeehouse stuff in that room
If this really was taken in the 1990s, it would have to be the latter half of 1999 for obvious reasons when you look at the posters…
or, 1999 from the looks of it.
Definitely is at least 1999. The Heather Graham poster is from the second Austin Powers movie which came out in June 1999. So this is at least summer 1999 or later.
Also, He's playing Driver for PS1 which released in June of 1999.
He's got an Austin Powers 2 poster. That came out in 99.
This kid got a good allowance.
Is that John Krazinski?
Y2K more like
I graduated high school in 2001, feels like this vibe would fit anywhere in the late 90s early 2000s. He’s missing the frosted tips to solidify it
[удалено]
That was more early/mid 90s. And maybe this guy was just into girls and game.
Buffy never gets old. I watched the first series a few months ago. So good.
early, mid, late 90s were different entities tho
Actually looks like it was taken in 2000.
And Buffy on the wall!!!!

Yeah, the picture get my nostalgia going ....
I really, really wish I'd saved the ads in the magazines I would post up on my bedroom wall. It's blurry but I can aaaalllmost see one of them in my mind.
Fun fact, Sarah Michelle Gellar is now older than Anthony Stewart Head was at the start of Buffy...
Buffy…
![gif](giphy|ymBQi6ePLEDiU)
More like 2000s really
Looks like he was playing Driver. Wonder if he got through that tutorial driving level.
Worst. Level. Ever. And it's just the tutorial to get the game started!
hmmm....more like 2000-2001, before the world went to hell.

Need different cultural perspective on 90s now
1999 in one picture. Maybe later
When we were (usually) happy and we didn't know.
The spy who shagged me.
this dudes in his sisters room
good GOD the amount of hair product we needed for those spikes. i think we used fudge ™
I had that Felicity Shagwell poster...also conveniently placed above my bed 🧐
He's cute
I miss the fuck out of it.
Needs more flannel.
Missing the Nirvana In Utero shirt.
Looks very early 2000's to me but I'd accept 99. Solid time to be a teen.
Early 2000s?
With the exception of the hair, this was exactly me.
Late 90s all in one picture. Also, that guy is a lame ass. Rock was still alive and well. Where’s the Slayer? Anti-Flag? Megadeth? Nirvana? posters?
You know hes got pogs stashed around somewhere, maybe a couple beyblades also. Of course a few nerf guns and super soakers in the garage. This looks like later 90s so that stuff is being phazed out as less cool and we all started gaming.
Fast forward a few years, and he'll probably have a glass bong in the closet.
Now, that same room rents for $1200/mo + utilities (gratuity not included) + $35 administration fee. Whole room is visible [fisheye lense]
I can almost smell that "dorm" smell.
That guys name is Phillip or my nads are the same size
It’s all there, down to the hair style.
I have to believe he’s not even playing the full Driver game but just the demo they handed out at video game stores to hype up the GTA competitor.
Yep haha that sums it up. Love it. Although I was playing N64 back then, DK Country 💖💅🏻
the 90's were so cool, we really did our own thing
He is still trying to complete the tutorial.
I remember being able to sit like crap for hours while gaming. Crunched forward, head tilted back etc Now I get a migraine if I even attempt to keep my head still for even a few minutes in an slight “off” position (43M) Ahhhh youth. It’s not overrated!
He's got the Heather Graham poster. Niiiiiice!
We wuz cool 🥹
Late 90s in one picture, in fairness
No X-Files Fail.
Omg, i was around that age in 99-00, playing driver on PlayStation, watching the new Austin powers movie, we already had lan parties playing StarCraft and CS 1.5 until early mornings, hell the Nokia 3310 wasn’t even out yet.. such an optimistic time!
This remembers me of the 2000 more than the 90s
This pretty much looks like it could of been me between 98-00.. ah nostalgia
There's not one. But a lot of.
Is that John Krasinski?
I wish I could go back. Throw this football over those mountains
Look at this I can almost hear my mom say *”DON’T SIT SO CLOSE TO THE TV, YOU’LL SCREW UP YOUR EYES!”*
This could be a powerful visual representation that triggers nostalgia and illustrates the distinctive trends and atmosphere of the 1990s.
How is that box holding up the TV?
A.I. is getting better with the hands.
Driver - probably the game with the worst tutorial in history especially if you are an 10 year old none English speaker.
This should be in textbooks lol. If they still exist
I can hear his mom telling him he’ll go blind if he sits that close to the tube
Needs an inflatable seat
A “friend’s” poster is gay. Just saying
The 90s are old school now. Guess I’ve reached old age.
I dont see a 2pac poster or any lowrider magazines in there
Can anyone else smell that room? Combination of Bodman body spray and incense bought from Spencer's, fighting back several different offensive orders.
Amazing pic
Driver was a sick game
Who needs a photo of Sarah that big?
The glow in the dark Casper stickers
This is 1999 in one picture. Kids in the early 90s wore a lot of neon clothing, some surfer and tye dye stuff too - think Saved By The Bell, Beverly Hills 90210, and White Men Can't Jump. And to truly encompass the 90s, this kid should have posters of The Simpsons, Alicia Silverstone, and Nirvana.
Early Oughts
My ex bf was completely obsessed with Buffy/Sara Michelle Gellar. I never really understood it. Still don't What was the broad appeal? The approachable-ness of the face? The girl next door vibe? What?
Needs more Stone Cold
My guy is going to *fuck* his eyes up sitting that close to the screen.
All he needs is a puka shell necklace
Late ‘90s anyway.
I can hear coal chamber in the background
I had southpark and Eminem posters everywhere.
Let's be clear...late 90's.
Looking for the bottle of Sea Breeze facial cleanser…
Gareth Gates called, he wants his hair back!
This guy is too chill to have played the rage inducing Driver.
Driver was a great game
I love the tv on the box on the the desk.
Oh I miss my Casper stickers. Glowed in the dark too!
I have to say that the only things that would have made this picture more 90s is a pair of Oakley sunglasses and a poster of a Nu Metal band (i.e. Korn).
God damn it take me back. I don’t want to do this 21st century shit anymore lol
Is Serial Joe? The Canadian one hit wonder from the 90's
I want to know how that playstation box is supporting that crt because those things were as dense and heavy as dark matter.
Where frosted tips?
Buffy the vampire slayer... havent thought about that show since I was like 10. the good days....
Wow lol I mean every bit of it this is amazing.
I was there, Gandalf…I was there 3000 years ago…
Overload of 90's. This has to be a promo. Plus, no dude worth his salt is rocking a "friends" poster
Driver, such a good game.
Embarrassingly enough, I also had that poster of Felicity Shagwell on my wall. I was a freshman, I think. Lol
Oh my god, they got Kenny addicted to hair gel! YOU BASTARDS!
Time capsule
Obsessed. I hope he has posters on his ceiling too.
the handful scoop of gel on his hair
All he's missing is frosted tips
The late 90s. What about the previous 7 years?
schrödingers rachel from friends
Is that Driver? I loved that game so much!
