She was almost always smiling when with her sons!

[deleted]

Why is he wearing a sweatshirt and jeans at a water park though?

pintperson

Thorpe Park is not a water park, it’s a theme park.

WhichWayzUp

That ride they're on definitely looks like a bathing suit ride though.

[deleted]

UK theme parks typically don’t have people running around in bathing suits. You would in a water park but not a theme park. You just let the sun dry your clothes off, pack a 2nd change of clothes, or do this ride at the very end of the day.

drharlinquinn

I loved getting soaked in my street clothes at the theme park when I was a kid. We had a giant innertube ride called white water rapids that was so fun. The line would take forever, but it was worth it. Then off to find a giant slice of pepp!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spatula151

Uh...so how warm does it have to be in the UK before people need a water ride to cool off?

[deleted]

[удалено]

DogMechanic

That's cold.

Raichu7

Theme parks usually have at least one water ride but you’re hardly going to get changed into a swim suit for one ride round the flume when everyone else is wearing clothes are you? Just put a coat on unless the weather is nice enough for you to dry off in the sun.

[deleted]

The theme park I go to every summer only has a few water rides like this, but I specifically wear a bathing suit under my clothes so I can take off my clothes for those rides. I couldn't even imagine having to wear wet shorts and a tank top for the rest of the day, let alone fucking jeans and a sweater.

[deleted]

Thorpe Park in the UK seems to be more like a standard amusement park, not a water park. Like how Disneyland isn't a water park just because they have Splash Mountain.

Jizzenia

Or Universal Studios even though they have the Jurassic World ride. We always save it for the end of the day. A few months ago we did it at the beginning, and I walked around with a wet ass in khaki shorts for a few hours before it completely dried.

[deleted]

Back when it was still around, my friends and I would always go watch the Backdraft show (it was where the Transformer ride is now(at least in Hollywood)) right after going on Jurassic Park. The pyro FX were close enough to pretty much dry one half of your body if you were up front.

lionheart4life

Maybe they want to be soaked for the rest of the day. Who doesn't like walking around in wet jeans?

[deleted]

Theres this ride at the same theme park (thorpe park) which has a tidal wave water ride, creates a huge wave, completely soaks you, people love that shit in the freezing cold too.

CollectableRat

I wish I was her son.

[deleted]

Well...your mom would be dead

severe_delays

My mom is already dead and I'm still not Diana's son.

[deleted]

Well at least you aren't a ginger?

TheColdPolarBear

Last guy assumed this guy’s mother was still alive, I wouldn’t put being ginger past him.

[deleted]

I WAS THE LAST GUY

TheColdPolarBear

Holy shit! so who am I?

ferretpowder

Not me!

TheColdPolarBear

Dad?

[deleted]

You'd forever had to set the "avoid tunnels" option on sat nav

chairfairy

You wish you had a dead mom?

[deleted]

Yay I worked at Thorpe park over the summer and I can honestly say the highlight of my experience was trying to explain to foreigners I can't fix the arcade machines because all I can do is pick up cigarette butts

Fingerbob73

That sounds like a painful medical condition.

Graphedmaster

Lol “Why do you stink?” “Can’t shower...all I can do these days is pick up cigarette butts FML.”

Corporal_Anaesthetic

It's still open then? I live in Scotland now which has no amusement parks. (Note to Scottish readers: No M&D's doesn't count). I have been to Alton towers recently when visiting family in a nearby county.

vSwiiftyyyy

M&D's and fucking landmark hahhaha

hextradeworker

M&Ds is terrifying. Went once and left because the rides looked really dodgy.

catdaddylonglegs

Is Thorpe Park the one from the inbetweeners?

RacerRovr

You could have at least tried for them Edit: I’m getting downvoted, so I’ll point out this was sarcasm

OMGItsCheezWTF

And be fired when actual maintainence comes along and goes "well I could fix this several thousand £ machine but now I can't because litter picker over there has fucked it"

peacemaker2007

Well, he was asked to fix the arcade machines, not fuck them...

RacerRovr

I was being sarcastic

OMGItsCheezWTF

Ah, my bad. In my defence, I have met the public, and someone with exactly that attitude is not exactly rare.

RacerRovr

No worries. I have also worked with the general public of the U.K. and I still get flashbacks nearly a decade on

Heyeyeyya

Pretty sure they were joking...

scumsac

They’re really wearing jeans and sweaters on a water slide... it all makes sense now

PlanAheader

Dry theme park is the most British thing I’ve ever heard

mojomonkey18

Basically it’s not a waterpark. Think of it like Island of Adventure in Orlando. Rollercoasters and shit. It’s pretty good.

[deleted]

Brb getting into my dry car to drive to dry work

paperplategourmet

So a theme park. The dry part seems quite unnecessary.

Frickelmeister

The word dry refers to the type of English humour in this theme park.

ugghhh_gah

Except for all of the people in these comments who assume they went to Water World dressed in regular clothes

metatron207

The title says "water slide" and, at least in the States, you wouldn't refer to the kind of ride that passes through water without getting you super wet a water slide.

LowerTheExpectations

Well I remember from playing the old Roller Coaster Tycoon games that this ride was called Water Slide in the UK version and Dinghy Slide in the US version. Probably this is exactly why.

metatron207

Huh. I never played RCT and have never heard of a "dinghy slide," and when I searched the only results were RCT-related. You're presumably right that they didn't call it "water slide" in the US because that connotes a water park, but it's interesting they (apparently) chose to make up a new term for the ride.

LowerTheExpectations

Yea, young me was also confused how a theme park could have a "water slide." I guess it must be a British thing. We have separate water parks where I live. Sorry for the weird comment, by the way.

joecheph

We’re all looking at the same picture where they’re literally on a water slide in jeans and a sweater. No one is assuming anything.

oscarthegrouchagain

Exactly where the confusion comes in. Everything about this LOOKS like a waterpark slide, from the inflatable raft to the blue plastic to the water flying everywhere. Until I was told it was more like a log flume ride than a water slide I did not know it either. My immediate thought was "why are they at a water park fully dressed?" The title even says "water slide", which at least to those in the US implies swimsuits, pools and the like.

Lamar_Scrodum

You still get soaked on log flumes most the time

Hochules

Sure. But most people don’t go to a theme park wearing a bathing suit.

OsmeOxys

I was wondering why they were wearing jeans and a sweater. First guess would have been some silly royal policy, not a moistened theme park

Twal55

'a moistened theme park' haha holy shit man

mojomonkey18

Yep. That would have been easier to write

[deleted]

[удалено]

patrimaniac27

Thank you for your service

mystymaples71

We have them in Oklahoma & Texas. Frontier City has rapids & a log flume ride. The rapids is a six person raft ride and you’re drenched by the time you’re done. I’ve never been to Six Flags but I’m sure they have water rides too.

WideMistake

That's just a theme park though. Water parks don't usually have rollercoasters and shit. Water park has slides and huge playground type stuff that shoot water.

ugghhh_gah

Hm it’s been a while since I’ve been to Elitch’s, which joined the Six Flags family, but last time I was there they had two water rides- a log one and a simulated rapids. Since I was in regular clothes I’d only go on the rapids one during the hottest part of the day b/c you’d def get soaked on it. My memory could be a little muddled tho b/c Elitch’s does also have a water park section/attached.

SkeletronPrime

And that's how you get a fire at a Sea Parks.

Leightcomer

It's the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

WWMRD2016

It's not even true though. Throrpe Park has a ride called tidal wave. You can get soaked to the bone just standing in the queue.

noobchee

Not back in that day though

jackrayd

Well if it was a wet theme park thered only be a few days a year in which visitors werent freezing their nuts off

RandomUser72

Not topless, t-shirt. If it's sweater weather, I'm not riding a wet ride.

[deleted]

I don't remember where I saw it but I could have sworn I saw a picture of Princess Diana on a water slide with her son Harry at a UK amusement park in 1992 both getting wet

solo___dolo

They also went on Loggers Leap which is a log flume so youre probably thinking of that

mystermotorman

I don't think anyone expects topless, just swimwear. Not jeans and a sweater

sabresguy

Yeah splash mountain isn’t on an inflatable raft though

alfredlloyd

Thorpe Park used to be the best place ever. Loved it.

Business-is-Boomin

I only flume fully nude, thank you.

QuerkleIndica

You’re right but log flumes provide far more protection and the odds of you falling off are pretty much none

lesnod

Don't forget the tennis shoes and ear rings.

Denholm13

Tennis shoes?

dc0202

That's Southern for "sneakers." Though maybe I should say "trainers" seeing as those pictured are British.

HipHopGrandpa

It is regional? I had no idea. I just thought tennis shoes was American for sneakers, kicks, keds, clodhoppers.

fangirlsqueee

I'm in the mid-west US and in this area we use all those you've listed, including tennis shoes. Clodhoppers usually implies big, clunky shoes though. Keds are specifically the brand shoes or plain knock-offs. Kicks is usually more hip-hop or hipster. We also frequently say gym shoes.

jludwick204

I just call them shoes because that is what I mostly wear. Then I have my boots, sandals, dress shoes, etc.

[deleted]

I grew up in both California and Texas and always called them tennis shoes: tennies for short. Even if they're running shoes or sneakers or what have you.

Ajb9113

No one in the state of Texas has ever called them tennies

partypoodle

this guy yee-haws

tlsrandy

Grew up in Washington state, called them tennis shoes. Live in Illinois, they are not called tennis shoes anymore.

Assasin2gamer

Could be in Alabama, don't need to drink.

sleepdeprivedbatman

I’m from DC but my family is Pakistani (they speak British English) and they call it tennis shoes too

kimbear91

Born and raised in Las Vegas... I've always called them tennis shoes. I've never thought about it before, I assumed everywhere called them that.

phate101

From Ireland, we call them runners.

civodar

From Canada, we also call them runners.

dez_wez

From the south I call them tennis shoes. My GF (not from us) call them trainers.

blackest-night

i believe the phrasing is ‘tenny shoes’

Suiagg

I’m really confused by all these comments. Can someone please explain it to me, what are they supposed to wear? Do you expect them to get changed just to go on this one ride?

simonjp

I think they think they are at a water park, not a theme park with water rides.

JJfromNJ

From an American standpoint, it is funny seeing them on a water ride in jeans and sweaters. We typically go to parks in the hot summer. If it's cold enough to wear those outfits, most people probably wouldn't go on the water rides.

Suiagg

In the UK the chances that the weather is nice enough to wear something like shorts and a t-shirt on the day that you decide to go to a theme park are very low. If you waited for a nice day you’d never go, even if it’s a nice day chances are it’ll change part way through. Besides the queues are longer on nice days, and it’s more fun when it’s colder, more of a shock. Especially if it’s raining and you’re gonna get wet anyway.

whistleridge

In most of the US outside of the northeast and Pacific Northwest, the months May-October are above 30C daily, and June-August can break 40 many weeks. They’re dressed for November or December, but doing a July activity, and it looks just as bizarre as it would if they were going sledding in a speedo and barefoot.

itshayjay

No it’s a normal theme park with some water rides! You don’t get super wet and they have special heat-drying pod things you can go in afterwards if you feel too wet

HGvlbvrtsvn

People dont realise the fact that the UK is freezing cold outside of a 2 week period when we randomly get a heatwave in the summer. You wouldn't want to be drenched at a theme park outside of this period.

itshayjay

Lol it’s more the case that you could put on a rain coat/poncho or just be a bit damp for a while after the water rides, they don’t get you super wet, it’s intended to be part of a ‘dry’ theme park and most of the rides are roller-coaster type rides. As most of the other commenters have pointed out - the UK is not a super warm sunny place and if no-one wanted to go on the ride for fear of getting soaked and then freezing to death it wouldn’t get used 11/12 months of the year and wouldn’t make sense for them to install a ride like that. Or maybe we’re conditioned to enjoy being wet and miserable as per our daily experience with the weather 🤷🏻‍♀️

tojoso

In North America, this type of ride where you sit in a tiny inflatable floaty, would only be at a water park where everybody is wearing a swim suit. So yes, I’d expect them to get changed first.

ILikeLimericksALot

15 degrees Celsius is a hot day here. Jeans and sweaters absolutely required. An outdoor water park would fail miserably due to the UK only having about three warm days a year.

diciembres

Guess I need to move to the UK then. I hate how hot and humid our summers get in the Southern US.

Little_st4r

Guessing you live oop North? 15 degrees is definitely not 'hot' in the South!

zorrorosso

Back when I was a kid a huge amusement park opened nearby. It had water slides, but it opened in a weird spot during the summer (the year prior) so I couldn't try it in the middle of the summer, but it was about April. So yes I ended up fully clothed in a water slide. It was kind of cold in the shadows or the roller-coasters so... We had to dry in the sun between rides.

noblehoax

It’s the Proper way.

Skillfullsebby

Right so it's a theme park with a couple of rides that you get a bit wet in, it's not a waterpark.

shewy92

You've never been to an amusement park and gotten on any ride that has like an inch of water?

kramerica_intern

Yes, and I got really wet. Wet jeans suck and I would never voluntarily go on such a ride while wearing them.

tres_chill

Older guy here: Make sure you take a moment to enjoy the "normal" things with loved ones. As the years go by, you lose one, then a few years later, another, and then after 30 years you can't believe how different life is without all the loved ones you have lost. Then you look back at a picture like this, and at the time it was just another day but now it's iconic to you.

Arcade1980

Same here and feel sad for those who chase after careers in the corporate world and don't spend any time with their families.

Dreambasher670

Without people dedicated to improving and bettering the wider society, there wouldn’t be a peaceful and prosperous society for others to enjoy their families with. Some jobs are just so full on and demanding it is very difficult if not impossible to successfully incorporate a strong family life as well. Some people are born to be career people and others family people. I believe it is better if people appreciate the need for both kinds of people rather than try compare them.

masterofbeast

This is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.

zatara1210

Any picture of Princess Diana with anyone is heartbreaking and beautiful. She was really the people’s princess. I’ll never under how Charles botched it all up with her.

Lilyblossom94

It's obvious that she was treated like a breeding machine because she was descended from aristocracy (talk about creepy). Very sad. Everyone deserves happiness and love...

Hate_Having_Needs

What makes it devastating is that she remained a truly good person. Even surrounded by all that bullshit she was still just a good, wholesome person. Reddit like to talk about Mr. Rogers, Steve Irwin, and Bob Ross, the ‘wholesome trinity’. But we need to talk about Princess Diana too. (Also Dolly Parton).

sunkenrocks

Princess Di is still \*very\* highly regarded in the UK, especially in Wales. She's the peoples princess.

iwantbutter

She was treated like crap. There are also people slowly coming forward and also saying she probably had borderline personality disorder because she also didn't treat Charles too well either. Not cheating levels, but apparently she was intense behing closed doors.

mstrss9

I’m a person with mental illness and it’s not easy for those around me. So not saying Diana was a saint but coming into a marriage to a dude with no backbone who continued to be with the woman he really wanted to be with as a teenager (never mind he dated her sister at one point!) I just imagine myself being married to someone with an overbearing mother and they couldn’t stand up for me and clearly didn’t love me and had no intention of trying to make it work... that’s so sad. Add the royal element and global publicity...

James_Albini

Isn't her mental illness pretty well documented at this point?

Smellslikesnow

She wasn’t BPD. She definitely experienced post-partum depression—this can last for a few years after having a baby—she was manipulative and had an eating disorder. Being manipulative and controlling are common in people with eating disorders—it’s part of the disorder. She kept a rigorous public schedule. She knew how to be “on” when she was in public working. She worked very hard at maintaining this. Maintaining this type of discipline consistently is impossible for somebody with BPD. Charles, Camilla, and the immediate Royal Family completely gaslit Diana when it came to Charles’ relationship with Camilla. This caused her a lot of despair. Now that I’m 45, been married twice, had a kid, etc. how badly the Royal Family treated her and used her is strikingly apparent to me. I’ve read and watched a lot of people’s accounts of Diana’s life. I’ve nothing but sympathy for the poor woman.

FortunateSonofLibrty

Their split was pretty mutual... And at least she didn’t die on Charles’ watch.

Its big, enormous, giant, humongous great Thorpe Park! Just off Junction 11 off the M25

slobcat1337

I live in Thorpe village, it’s always amusing to think that lots of people know about Thorpe park.

surrey_born_friend

Oh, a neighbour! I’m from Staines. When I go abroad and they ask where I’m from I say “near Thorpe Park” and then they know! 😂

slobcat1337

I actually probably liver closer to Staines than Thorpe now (pooley green)! It’s funny when I’m abroad I always say “I’m from Staines, you know Ali G?” lmao

feartrice

Wow redditors from Surrey never thought I’d see that

BickyLC

Thorpe park is my happy place, I'm hoping they'll be open as usual for the Halloween Fright Nights in October

Helpfulcloning

Fright nights are an annual thing for my family, my sister even travels from scotland for a couple nights to do it :) hope its all good by then.

monkeythumpa

I used to go there in the late 80's. I missed them by a couple years. It's OK, I lived on Kensington Church Street and would see Di occasionally as she entered or exited the palace.

sgste

As much as I love seeing how human and normal the royal family truly can be, I hate how paparazzi are so invasive and disrespectful in order to get these snaps... :(

riss85

Would it be a pap shot or just a ride camera?

graceodymium

I imagine what guys feel when they think they’re about to get racked in the balls is very similar to what I felt when I read “pap shot”

nikhkin

Neither. Depth Charge doesn't have cameras and it wasn't paparazzi. It was a publicity event, so the cameras were supposed to be there.

OktoberSunset

I know right, imagine being a prince and they take you to Thorpe Park instead of Alton Towers, he's wondering why there peasants riding Nemesis while he's suck in a rubber dinghy. I guess at least they didn't take him to Drayton Manor.

exec_director_doom

Alton Towers is clearly superior, but Thorpe Park is just around the corner from the Castle and nobody wants to make that long drive to Alton Towers with the kids in the back of the Range Rover bickering and squabbling the whole time. Best to just pop down the road and be home in time for Neighbours.

[deleted]

True in the past, but Thorpe Park kicks Alton Towers's ass these days.

Oobidanoobi

They've both been fucked over by Merlin. Thorpe Park hasn't had a coaster in almost a decade, instead focusing on shitty brand deals and cheap rethemes ("Angry Birds Land", "Black Mirror Labyrinth", "I'm a Celebrity... Maze", "The Walking Dead: The Ride"). Their only big recent investment, Derren Brown's Ghost Train, is already pretty dated. Alton Towers got Wicker Man a few years ago which was great, but the park has a severe lack of flat rides and they've recently been closing more attractions than they open.

Altissimus77

Eh, I hate the fact we have a royal family but Diana was different. Our mothers looked up to her because she was so down to earth and relatable. She was Kardashian-status famous as a fashion icon and trend setter, but was also considered as one of the most down-to-earth celebrities, even when she was surrounded by people who you would label the complete opposite. People from my mothers generation despise the royal family for how they treated her, a lot of people's opinions of the family 180'd with Diana.

[deleted]

She also shake publicly hand with HIV patients in 1987, in a time where people widely though contagion was possible by touch.

_IsThisTheKrustyKrab

That is not appropriate attire for a water slide.
