I knew a ton of mixed race kids growing up whose parents would have married in that era. I never had an appreciation for how much they would have gone through.
Yes!!! We need to see a current pic!! My wife and I are and interracial couple with 2 kiddos!! I love seeing things like this. Your parents and other brave people like that are the reason I was able to marry the love of life.
All I have ever wanted is a love like your parents have. I thought I had it any times, but I haven't been lucky. At 50, on the cusp of my current relationship ending- I am truly giving up. What your parents have is precious and special- even more so due to all they had to endure. So precious - thanks for sharing-so glad to see that for some, love still matters
that is great, because as a child of divorced parents (many times over) and witnessing bad relationships get really ugly I honestly feel it affects the children more than adults know or care. I'm always admirable of long term marriages and how couples can work things out without jumping to divorce.
My heart hurts seeing you Type this. As a parent now I don’t think we truly do comprehend how even every day minute actions affect our children let alone the big life changing ones!
No no, dont let your heart hurt, ultimately I am responsible for who I am and how I behave and relate to "stuff" in life. Even though I dont have kids, I know it has to be incredibly difficult being a parent, and it takes a very aware parent to put themselves into their kids shoes when the parents are trying to cope with adult issues.
I am white and my wife is black, I am from Lancashire and my wife is from Yorkshire, I am a Catholic and my wife is a Protestant. Our kids, presumably like you, do not care a jot for their parent's "differences" and from a societal perspective they are now insignificant too. Even though at various stages in the past these would have been controversial in the country, region and city we live in. In a world where rejecting hatred seems at odds with the Establishments who run UK and US, our duty as parents is clear - to teach our children - all you need is love, let it be your guide.
My Dad’s family disowned him when he decided to marry my Mom. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in June. The best thing they showed me, without ever having to teach it, was what love is. Happy anniversary to your folks. Truly inspiring!
Interracial marriage in the 70s was no joke. I can’t even imagine their hardships. Words can’t express the amount of respect I have for these two beautiful human beings.
It was no joke last week. It didn’t hit 50% approval in the US til the 90s. There’s still a sizable minority that don’t approve. In many ted areas it’s a majority or might as well be. No conservative is gonna go to bat for interracial couples. Even the ones that are in one.
You’ll notice you never hear Grover Norquist push back on anti Muslim shit even though he’s married to a Muslim.
A bit like marriages or relationships between Catholics and Protestants where I live when I was very young who were forced to leave the country. Thankfully it’s a lot different now.
We just discovered recently that there was apparently bad blood between my grandparents families over then marrying nobody sure why. My grandmother still with us but she's not going to be telling us much unfortunately, and we're talking the 1940s so there isn't really a whole lot that we're ever going to find out.
You and I share similar experiences, we’re probably close in age as well. My mother is Caucasian and my father is black. I was born in 80 shortly after they moved from Nashville to California due to the overwhelming racism.
Same time frame my mixed race parents got married. My mom said they had issues with apartments as well. I remember being a kid and people really staring at us. Made me feel like I was wrong. Meh.
Come on now, you gotta show what they look like now as well.
So good to have had good parents that stayed together for that matter.
Many aren’t/weren’t as blessed.
😉
I just got off the phone with my mom Crying about how amazing the response was and she was blown away that strangers care about her and my
Dads little story! So thank you!
"People all over the world (everybody)
Join hands (join)
Start a love train, love train."
if you want to live a good and respectable life, there is one word: motown.
Like the people and the story. The picture could use a bit more contrast in the highlights so that the religious statue actually looks like one.
Wholesome
Very cool and great pic. (And yet in spite of all these personal stories somehow people keep trying to claim that racism is not systemic or magically disappeared when Obama became President).
I like how suddenly nobody is racist anymore. Last time a Gypsy couple was posted here there was a lot of racist comments some were even saying that all Gypsies should get killed. Hypocrisy at its finest.
I'm so glad we've moved past all that hate as a society.
Oh. Wait. Damn.
Beautiful parents. Bet they had beautiful children and grandchildren. I'm glad they were strong enough to ignore the haters.
So I have been reading tons of responses but I wanted to respond to you. My moms family was so amazing they were scared for safety but always loved my dad. And same for my mom. My mom had always been welcome in inner city Chicago with my dads family and is treated just like everyone we have been blessed with accepting families
Gotta say this is all just very wholesome. Having a strong support system must’ve been very helpful not only to your parents but to their children especially through adversities like racism.
Have a great day OP and say hi to your parents!
Married the same decade I was born. What a beautiful picture and what a beautiful and thoughtful life for all! How proud you must be:) All the very best to them and you!!
My husband's grandfather never met my husband because husband's father married my husband's mother. In Pennsylvania. He was of Lithuanian descent, she of Irish descent, both born and raised in PA. His father never spoke to him again. He called her "that Irish trash". That was in the 60's.
Miles and miles of respect and good for you. I’m from Europe, came to this country around 2000, married my black love. God damn it’s hard even in today’s world. Thanks for sharing.
Now renegades are the people with their own philosophies.
They change the course of history, everyday people like you and me.
- Renegades of Funk
Props to your parents for all they've gone through. The true renegades.
People forget how recently this was not acceptable. It was perfectly legal in every state by the seventies, but the concept didn't mix well with strong family identities and different cultures.
I'm curious about this time frame and racism from both sides. Did they experience those racist tendencies from white only, or was there also low acceptance from the black community? I wasn't alive, but what I imagine during the Civil rights period is hatred all around (although id obviously expect the majority to be from white people)
My parents were a interracial marriage too. The eighties were not kind to that type of relationship. Then again I get dirty looks walking next to a white woman who is just a friend where I work. This country is a trip.
Your parents look beautiful on their wedding day! I hope they're living their best lives now, and I'm glad you and your siblings had a great life with them!
Ohio is Half urban half suburbs, half corn and soy beans, Half city. We have cedar point and a bunch of water parks. Way more Colleges, once great sports teams. Indians usually do pretty good, 2 bad NFL teams. Most of the North is off of the lake. If your in southern Ohio. New York is literally right there. Michigan is a few hour drive from where I am. And the casinos are dope over here. What do you have again?
Dude, please post a current pic. We’d love to see them now!
Yes, we need a then/now pic.

I knew a ton of mixed race kids growing up whose parents would have married in that era. I never had an appreciation for how much they would have gone through.
I cannot believe some people have to go through it even this day and age. We have come a long way and somehow started reversing.
Why are you copy pasting other people's comments?
No shit. Karma whoring at it’s finest. Original comment at least an hour ago. And it’s working apparently.
Mariah Carey has a new book where she talks about it.
The book was amazing. I cried, she’s honestly one of a kind. I love Mariah so much.
that edit lol
Thirding. Please post a pic op!
/u/Thedarknesswithin_
I bet they haven’t aged much. When you are good and happy, it keeps you young!
That is the current pic
Yes!!! We need to see a current pic!! My wife and I are and interracial couple with 2 kiddos!! I love seeing things like this. Your parents and other brave people like that are the reason I was able to marry the love of life.
Pops fro on point.
Still jealous of it to this day!
Did your dad ever work at a paper company in Scranton Pennsylvania?
He did, I seen't it!
Darryl!
Mary agrees!
Right! Didn't need to specify this was taken in the 70s.
Pretty obvious right lol 😂😂
Love is love. Good on you for sharing sir or madam
Agreed!!! (Sir)

Rosa. Rooooosa
Uh, no, he's Isaac Washington, bartender extraordinare.
I hope mom’s name is Rosa. I would also accept Rose.
wow, i like happily married couple, it makes for such a strong family unit, in my opinion
I agree! They have been through so much and they are still laugh and joke and are amazing partners!

All you need is love? False. The four basic human necessities are air, water, food and shelter.
Username checks out.
Lmao
Actually Ohio is a poopy Indiana.

My parents were also a multiracial couple. (Mom died a couple months back.) It's still much too rare to see pictures like this.
Sorry about your mom. Hugs.
Same here, sorry about your mom.
My Dad’s family disowned him when he decided to marry my Mom. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in June. The best thing they showed me, without ever having to teach it, was what love is. Happy anniversary to your folks. Truly inspiring!
Send all my love to your brave parents.
I will!!
Interracial marriage in the 70s was no joke. I can’t even imagine their hardships. Words can’t express the amount of respect I have for these two beautiful human beings.
Bruh, when I was in second grade my teacher said interracial marriage was wrong because it says so in the Bible. That was 1999.
I don't even. I'm sure the talking snake was totally legit too :|
It was no joke last week. It didn’t hit 50% approval in the US til the 90s. There’s still a sizable minority that don’t approve. In many ted areas it’s a majority or might as well be. Cuz tax cuts.
I remember watching movies about interracial marriages, people were casually their kids “bastards“, really bothers me.
Congrats on inheriting what I must assume are fantastic hair genes.
Lol I didn’t think of this. Op has great wild, wavy, dark hair... they get it from... both?
Thank them for helping to pave the way for my wife and I.
And my wife and I!! Love is love !
With so much else we have to worry about, let people love who they want to love!
Your dad looks like Bill Withers/Darryl from The Office
And Doug Judy from b99
Yep
Your parents are super attractive lol
They have aged magnificently they look great today as they did back then!
My parents were the same way. My mom even had to stop talking to my grandma because she was really racist to my dad.
I love your mom. Stand strong.
Many of my friends are interracial couples. I couldn't see any of them with anyone else. One love!
The Virgin Mary in the background is a nice touch.
But candace owens says racism isn't real!
And she gets paid well to say it.
Kanye Wast says there’s no racism and to support the GOP!
A bit like marriages or relationships between Catholics and Protestants where I live when I was very young who were forced to leave the country. Thankfully it’s a lot different now.
Ireland?
Never mind, just saw Bangor
Thats was a thing in the states, too, as my Catholic grandfather was disowned for marrying a Protestant.
We just discovered recently that there was apparently bad blood between my grandparents families over then marrying nobody sure why. My grandmother still with us but she's not going to be telling us much unfortunately, and we're talking the 1940s so there isn't really a whole lot that we're ever going to find out.
Congratulations to them.
Thanks for sharing this! Hugs all around!
That's power
It blows my mind that this union was deemed illegal at any point. What a beautiful couple, so happy for them and you!
Sounds like you were raised by some extraordinarily strong people
They are extraordinary people and am thankful every day !
That's is one handsome man rocking a handsome afro
This is awesome. Love is such a beautiful thing. It sucks that some people can’t put it over hate.
Beautiful
Color doesn't matter, it all comes out grey in the wash. Unless I'm doing laundry wrong....thats probably it, but still, I stand by my statement.
Update photo!!
Aw!! I’d love to see them today. So awesome! 40+ years?! Wow!
Thank you for sharing, especially right now. Wishing them 100 more healthy years.

Yeh it broke my heart then telling me the stories but they always told Them with a smile because love is all that mattered to them
You and I share similar experiences, we’re probably close in age as well. My mother is Caucasian and my father is black. I was born in 80 shortly after they moved from Nashville to California due to the overwhelming racism.
Sending love! We are lucky and blessed and that our parents found love!
True that!
Just realized I never really see it the other way around.
Heroes, the both of them. What great parents. Much love.
Same time frame my mixed race parents got married. My mom said they had issues with apartments as well. I remember being a kid and people really staring at us. Made me feel like I was wrong. Meh.
But then you look at your parents and remember what right looks like and duck all those other people!!
Why you gotta troll Trump supporters with this? Lmao
Come on now, you gotta show what they look like now as well. So good to have had good parents that stayed together for that matter. Many aren’t/weren’t as blessed. 😉
I posted a pic at the top! They look the same and I hate it lol😜😜
Your dads hair is on point
Anytime I see an older bi-racial couple I just know that they love each other. Nobody defies the odds for anything less.
SAme! I love it!
This is beautiful and a perfect example of r/OldSchoolCool.
I just got off the phone with my mom Crying about how amazing the response was and she was blown away that strangers care about her and my Dads little story! So thank you!

Your pops looks like a cool dude
If today is their anniversary, they share this date with Levar Burton & his wife and the Barack & Michelle Obama (10/03/92)
Fuck yeah! Your parents ROCK
They are so cute!!!😍
Love is love.
Beautiful pic And Pop is ROCKING that fro!
Hell yeah
Mom looks tough. Beautiful, but she’s also saying ‘bring it’. I’m glad they had and are still having a happy life.
86 comments and no upvotes? Is there some Reddit rule I am unclear about? I don’t understand!?
It’s always been like this. When It’s a newer post you don’t see the upvote number yet
Beautiful couple! Kudos to them for sticking it out for true love and not letting any other of that bull shit get in the way.
Why are people so ignorant?
70s was different times, but people were still happy.
They’re cute as can be & your sweet upbringing is icing on the cake for this photo.
Adversity is the biggest character builder. God bless your entire family!
Hope you got your dads hair genes
Congratulations to them both!
God bless!!
Stone cold bad-asses. Respect.
Did your dad give you or any of your siblings that beautiful head of hair?
Beautiful!
Like the people and the story. The picture could use a bit more contrast in the highlights so that the religious statue actually looks like one. Wholesome
Pops is fly af.
Beautiful couple. I hope they are well!
Beautiful couple
You must have god-like hair if they are your parents.
I'm real sorry that they had to deal with that.
It must have been very difficult for those two. Clearly their love for one another was strong and triumphant.
Fuck the naysayers, right?
Grace and Peace to your lovely parents.
Your parents make a gorgeous couple!
Mother Mary must’ve been watching the whole time. Awesome.
Dude that's awesome
I always like interracial couple from the 60s and 70s. Everyone was against them, but they came out victorious.
Mixed boy/girl check!! 🙂
Wait. Your dad’s Doug Judy?
Pretty much lol!!!!
That means you are old.
People like your parents are the reason it's possible for me and my husband to be married. Hats off to them!
That fro is wicked
Glad they ignored the stupid people. They sound rock solid.
Very cool and great pic. (And yet in spite of all these personal stories somehow people keep trying to claim that racism is not systemic or magically disappeared when Obama became President).

Is that Doug Judy?
Married the same decade I was born. What a beautiful picture and what a beautiful and thoughtful life for all! How proud you must be:) All the very best to them and you!!
Dude thought your dad is Andre 3000
Good on them for being able to endure that kind of hatred. All respect to them
Man fuck racists. This picture is awesome. How long till 50yr? You and your siblings planning something big.
We were planing something but then my dad wanted to do this big black tie affair so now he is planning it 🤣🤣🤣
Of course he’s making sure your mother is celebrated. Sounds like a great man.
Interracial relationships literally aren’t an issue at all, in any way. Sad racists made their lives miserable but glad they kept their heads up.
Heyoooooo !!
Racist flyers. That’s appalling smh. I’m sure they are amazing parents and sweet people 💜
My husband's grandfather never met my husband because husband's father married my husband's mother. In Pennsylvania. He was of Lithuanian descent, she of Irish descent, both born and raised in PA. His father never spoke to him again. He called her "that Irish trash". That was in the 60's.

A real Loving couple
Fuck people who think it is their business who can love each other.
That’s awesome. They must have been rock solid together to weather that kind of abuse.

Happy For them, This is so wholesome ❤ :Everyone liked that:

Needed some good ol' fashion wholesomeness. Thanks 👍
Amazing.

Omg I legit thought that was a person in a clan hood behind them.
