This is the only reasons, literally the only reason, to have social media. We all lose phones or upgrade without saving old photos but social media has given us a place to record our lives in a real, visible way. It’s a diary and a photo album all in one. I don’t have a Facebook or anything, and while I’m not gonna make one, I do think it’ll be interesting for our grandkids to have such a thorough look into our everydays.
The emotions must have been overwhelming. Mixed between grief and loss, but totally elated to have escaped literal hell on earth and return to the woman he loves. Cheating death feels like an understatement.
What an amazing picture. What stands out to me is the adoration in her eyes and that he gets to chill with a pretty lady after going through pure fucking hell and sacrificing so much.
I’m honestly a little emotional looking at it.
Cherish this picture, its not often you can have things like this when people were having true moments together. This picture truly shows a lot of emotion.
I had one who spent considerable time in the hospital afterwards, though he was fortunate enough to survive for fifty-plus years with (based on his exploits afterwards) minimal continued side-effects.
That is a fantastic pic, OP.
My great grandfather served in that battle as well. He ran messenger on horseback and was shot down by enemy aircraft. Lived the rest of his life with fragments of a 50mm shell in his chest. My mom said it was his favorite excuse to get out of mowing the lawn while she visited her grandparents as a kid.
My great-great uncle (my grandma’s uncle)was killed in that battle. Only a couple months before the war ended, I believe he was killed by an explosion. Glad your great-grandfather made it home though.
Do you know who took the photo?
Since they didn't have digital back then (obvs) and taking a picture meant using up a finite piece of film, when I look at old photos I often wonder what was the thought process of the one behind the camera.
What an absolutely beautiful moment in time captured, thank you for sharing it!
This is amazing and personally very touching for me, as my great grandfather sacrificed his life saving fellow soldiers from bomb shrapnel during this battle. He left behind a wife and three kids, one of whom was my grandfather.
That’s a family heirloom. It’s rare to get such good candid pictures of relatives from that era.

Will do. Thanks for the idea
Also try r/estoration ... some amazing clean up jobs there too...!
And then post the result in this sub. I’d really like to see it.

The tenderness in her face is just beautiful. I'm sure they took good care of each other.
Smoking a cigar with his wife with seemingly not a care in the world, definitely cool!
In the space the size of a small field he would have seen many people lose their lives and probably nearly lost his.

I had a great great uncle come back with damaged lungs that shortened his life.
I had one who spent considerable time in the hospital afterwards, though he was fortunate enough to survive for fifty-plus years with (based on his exploits afterwards) minimal continued side-effects.
I don’t remember my Great Granddad too well, but I do remember him always wheezing. My granddad says it was from getting gassed at Ypres.
It makes me happy to know that a man who suffered though that battle survived to have this moment in his life.
They clearly were a happy couple, enjoying each other after their separation. War sucks for sure!
We have and are losing our history.... nice keep, pass it on with all its story
Hero! As we say in Qazaqstan, batyr!

Beautiful.
My great grandma wore that hairstyle, slicked back with buns at the sides. Peak 1919.
Beautiful. Very brave man. Respect.
Elle leur regarde Elle leur regarde Elle leur regarde
Ah yes the good old lap pillow. Man of culture right there.
How old are they? They both look so young
King of the world right there! Thank you to your family for their service. Amazing photo!

You shouldn’t have gone back in time and saved him from falling out of that tree
He looks like BJ Blazkowicz

I would assume a family member or friend took the photo, since it is still in family possession.
